t’s that special creepy time of year when thoughts of witches, vampires and ghosts fill the imagination and ghouls come out to play. And if you live in the Coachella Valley, it’s also when the most anticipated party of the year takes place; FEARTASTIC presents BB Ingle’s Annual Halloween Bash! BB’s parties are legendary, and have been entertaining desert party goers for decades. His Halloween parties in particular are enormously popular, giving attendees the chance to shed their everyday persona and dress up as whatever they want to for a night of decadent freaky fun. His parties are epic, and bring people from not only the desert area, but all over southern California to attend. Last year’s event, held at the Palm Springs Convention Center was enormous, bringing out well over 5,000 people to play. The costumes ranged from the demur, to the over top, with even a full-fledged Genie cruising around on his very own magic carpet willing to take pictures with anyone that would ask. You can probably find just about any costume at BB’s party; it is a coveted event that people look forward to, an event that stimulates all the senses. BB must have been born to bring people together, starting his career as a leader in social gatherings back in the 80’s when he and a few others founded BB Obrien’s Sports Bar. The night

spot was a constant in desert nightlife, and after its closure, Ingle began throwing special holiday/ event parties earning him the Master of Events and the Godfather of Parties title that he has today. This year BB’s 29th Annual Halloween Bash, Monster Rock takes place on Halloween night, Thursday October 31st, and is in partnership with Kim Waltrip of TROUPE Productions to kick off their FEARTASTIC Horror Film Fest. The 3 day event will showcase 5 frightening films at the Camelot Theatre with a kick off MONSTER ROCK HALLOWEEN PARTY at the newest hotel addition to Palm Springs, the Hard Rock Hotel in downtown. The Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs boasts all of the flash and glamour affiliated with the famous chain. Amenities at the new venue include swanky lounges (lobby & poolside), incredible dining, spa services and hip luxury accommodations all dripping with the cool vibe that is part of the Hard Rock brand. BB was approached by Waltrip to partner up for the Halloween extravaganza, making the party the kick-off for the FEARTASTIC Horror Film Fest. It seems like a natural alliance, as BB oozes Halloween fun and the film fest is all about having a scary good time. Coupled with the fact that the Hard Rock Hotel, which started back in 1971, sets its goals on bringing people together to partying up a storm, it’s a shared goal that BB has been an advocate of all along, “I’m excited to have my big bash at the Hard Rock,” he shared. The Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs and BB’s Monster Rock Bash is a perfect match! The mega party will be spread out around the hotel, incorporating the elaborate underground ballroom, and poolside area. Entertainment includes heart pumping music from DJ’s, Ray

Phillips, James Gonzalez, Aaron C, Ceasare, JF// Discord, Jeff Ferguson, Nate Campbell, Tommy O’Connor plus others. There will be a live Monster rock music show performed in the ballroom, with food stations and of course, plenty of bars to accommodate thirsty hell raisers. The Monster Rock Bash will also have a costume contest, sponsored by Fox 11, giving away a total of $1,000 in cash to winners dressed up as their favorite Fox 11 character. The party goes from 8pm to 2am and guests must be 21 or older to enter. Tickets are priced at $40 per person for general admission, $50 at the door. There are VIP tickets available for $100 and include VIP SEATING, 2 drink tickets and munchies. Halloween has long been a holiday for kids to dress up, knock on stranger’s doors and extort candy (give me a treat or else). But the holiday has evolved into a much needed adult break from reality as well. It’s a night of fantasy, scares, dares, tricks and treats. And for us living in the desert, we have been lucky to have the “Pied Piper” of parties in our midst to throw exciting; edgy Halloween Bash’s every year. With BB’s Monster Rock at the Hard Rock Hotel in Palm Springs this year, it is certain that there will be plenty of treats for us all….and maybe a scary trick or two. Happy Halloween! the horror genre? Hooray for FEARTASTIC Horror Film Festival, it is certainly a breath of fresh air for all of us who enjoy a jolt of cinema fright now and then. FEARTASTIC is a collaboration between Kim Waltrip, Trini Garza and Jim Casey of entertainment company Troupe Productions and film programmer/film maker Bradley Sullivan. The festival was brought about when they noticed a vacancy for a different kind of film festival and from their affinity for horror films. Waltrip and Casey through their production company Kim and Jim Productions have successfully produced several films of their own including “Hit & Run” with Bradley Cooper and Kristen Bell and “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” starring Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy that will be released next summer. Bradley Sullivan is also a filmmaker with his 2012 film “I Didn’t Come Here to Die” just recently released in different international markets. The FEARTASTIC Horror Film Festival

kicks off on Halloween night Thursday, October 31st, at the newly opened and stunning Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs. The festival will be ushered in by BB’s Monster Rock Halloween Bash, in association with FEARTASTIC. The party goes from 8pm to 2am and will be held in the hotel ballroom and also poolside. The party will offer up four venues of entertainment, a variety of DJ’s, plus a multitude of bar and food stations. The party will also have a costume contest sponsored by Fox 11, which will be giving away $1000 in cash prizes for the best dressed person depicting a Fox 11 character.
The films will start on Friday, November 1st at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs. There will also be two panel discussions where hopeful filmmakers can meet and chat with agents, buyers, actors and directors about the art and reality of creating an independent film. The first Panel: Getting a Film Made, will take place on Friday night followed by a kick-off cocktail party sponsored by Level 33 Entertainment, and then the first of five films will be shown at the festival, the LGBTQ film “Contracted”. Saturday begins with the second discussion Panel: Indie Filmmakers Chat, and four more films, “The Second Death”, “Dead Weight”, “Delivery” and “Here Comes the Devil”. All festival films are acclaimed and handpicked for their diversity and creative ability to scare. FEARTASTIC Horror Film Festival comes to a close Saturday, November 2nd at 10pm with a cocktail party hosted by Troupe Productions. Festival fans can purchase FEARTASTIC event tickets individually, or in a collective pass. They offer a Full Festival Pass for $99 that includes one ticket to BB’s Monster

MIRACLE SPRINGS RESORT HOSTS PERFORMANCE OF PLAY “LUSH!”
T
he Miracle Springs Resort in Desert Hot Springs will host a performance of “LUSH!” on Sunday, November 10, 2013, at 2:00 PM. The two-act play is presented as a “Staged Reading”. It brings to life the story of a forgotten American heroine: the first woman to join Alcoholics Anonymous. Playwright and Director Valerie-Jean (VJ) Hume says, “Everyone knows about the first two men who started AA. In 1935, the thinking was that only men were “inebriates”. AA was exclusively a Guy Thing for the first four years!” But Marty Mann, a former socialite born into wealth and privilege in Chicago, wound up living on a park bench, homeless, alone, and drunk. How did she become “the First Lady of AA”? Her story paved the way for all other women in sobriety—including a nation’s First Lady, Betty Ford. Hume’s play about Marty Mann, told with much laughter and a few tears, also educates the audience about the paradoxes of alcoholism--such as: Why don’t they stop drinking when they see what it is doing to them? Why do they relapse after finally getting sober? Is the disease inherited? What is the difference between a “heavy drinker” and an “alcoholic”? The two-hour play answers these and other questions. “Everybody knows someone who is an alcoholic,” declares Hume. “It might be a friend, a co-worker, or someone dangling off a branch of your own family tree! So everyone can identify with the messages of this show, even nonalcoholics—because if you have ever been mixed up with one, you never forget what it can put you through.“ A few years ago “LUSH!” swept its category in the Desert Theatre League’s “Desert Stars” Awards, with six wins. It has been performed at the Indio Performing Arts Center, Michael’s House, The Tolerance
Education Center, The ABC Club, and the world-famous Betty Ford Center. It always experiences full houses and standing ovations at every performance. Meet the cast: Dean Apple plays “Bill W.” and Ron Young plays “Dr. Bob Smith”, AA’s co-founders. Hume plays “Marty Mann”, and all three appear in various other character roles. Beautiful live music, woven throughout the play, not only sets the mood, but also identifies the exact year of the upcoming scene. Music is provided by talented local clarinetist Ted Pethes. All of them worked together in this play’s prequel, “Bill W. and Dr. Bob” about the birth of AA. The Miracle Springs Resort, with its world-famous healing mineral waters, is located at 10625 Palm Drive in Desert Hot Springs, six miles north from Highway 10 (south of 10, it’s Gene Autry Drive). Manager Reggie Bickford invites playgoers to come early for lunch at the awardwinning CAPRI Restaurant or the Juice Bar… or stay for dinner after the show. “We are so enthusiastic about this play, which has already helped so many people. It’s the first play at our hotel that I’ve been part of, and already we’ve heard such excitement about it,” he smiles. The hotel will also offer a special rate to playgoers for Sunday night. “The breath-taking beauty of our hotel grounds and the pools should not be missed, because travelers come from all over the planet to soak them up,” Bickford reminds us. Tickets to the play are just $10.00, and reservations may be made with “Stanley” at the front desk, (760) 251-6000.

Brooke Beare is almost ready to come back to the small screen
I
8
t’s been a couple of months since the Coachella Valley has seen one of its most well-respected broadcast journalists. With good reason: CBS Local2 anchor Brooke Beare has been off the air for most of the summer and fall as she awaited, gave birth and has been getting to know, her daughter Danica. The little girl arrived in early August, and Beare has spent her maternity leave nurturing her newborn and helping her two-year-old son, Gavin, adjust to be being a big brother. “Luckily, he’s my little helper boy,” Beare said proudly from her home earlier this week. The hard part will be leaving them to return to the newsroom on Nov. 4, the day before election. “My husband and I have tried to do as much as we can without outside help,” she said. Which was easier when it was only one child, she admits. “We both work a late shift and sometimes we’re both not able to be home to take care of the kids.” Luckily both have parents who live close enough to come out to Coachella Valley and lend a hand “when we really need them,” she said. For Beare, that means asking her mom to come up from San Diego, where she grew up. As a teenager Beare would split some of her time between theater classes and being the editor of the Torrey Pines High School newspaper in Del Mar, Calif. Becoming a broadcast journalist wasn’t on her mind at the time in the mid-1990s. “I loved musical theater and I wanted to become an actress,” she said. “It was my mother who said we should look at some more practical options that would blend my interests in stage and journalism and she was the one who came up broadcast journalism as a career option.” That turned out to be a good thing for the news viewers here in the Coachella Valley where Beare co-anchors the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. broadcasts on the CBS affiliate and the 10 p.m. newscast on KDFX Fox affiliate, all with Kris Long. “My mom thought it would be a good way for me to earn a living,” she said. Luckily, Beare learned the truth about making a living in broadcast journalism while attending USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, where she graduated with degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Cinema. “They were pretty upfront in telling us what it would be like once we got out of school,” she added. Once out of school, Beare began her work life at stations in north Texas towns like Sherman and Dennison. During her time in Texas, Beare honed her skills working on stories that included interviewing former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy in East Texas in February 2003. While the professional experience was great, Beare wanted to move closer to home. “I was thinking about ways (toward) working back in San Diego,” she said. She got a taste of the Coachella Valley working on a cameo in “The Santa Trap,” a TV
movie that starred Shelley Long, Stacey Keach and Corbin Bernsen, as a – what else! -- TV news reporter and started scouting the possibility of working in the Southwest. “It was a lot closer to home than Texas,” she said. She landed a position as a general assignment reporter for KPSP and moved to the valley in 2003. Her time in the field has produced several high-profile pieces including convicted murderer Joseph Duncan being named as the suspect in the kidnapping and murder of nine-year old Anthony Martinez of Beaumont; interviewing 2008 Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona, and former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina. She even met her husband, a Palm Springs Police Department officer, while covering the Palm Springs International Film Festival in 2004. Beare did leave the valley for work, commuting to and from San Diego, after she married. “But it didn’t work out,” she said. “After about a year, he asked me to see if I could find a job back here.” It’s a move she’s happy she made. Since her return Beare has moved up to being a night anchor and still works on special projects. “(The Coachella Valley) is a lot more sophisticated than other markets of our size,” she acknowledged. “And there is also so much more diversity in the market which makes it an interesting place to work.” Now with the CBS Local2 and KESP TV3 owned by the same company, she also sees an advantage for the viewers. “We have more resources to cover the big stories,” she said. “At the same time, I can be aggressive when I have a story I think is worthwhile and there’s the possibility now of it being seen on our other channels in addition to the CBS station. That’s a service to our viewers.” “After being here for so long, I know the issues and I understand the history behind them,” she added. “It’s not something that maybe I fully appreciated when I was younger, but I understand that it makes me a better reporter.”

T
he Pride Celebration, scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 3, includes block parties, same-sex weddings at the ``Forever Marilyn’’ statue, golf tournament, a two-day festival with parade, wrapped up by the Pride Honors Awards. This theme for 2013 is appropriately named, “It’s Time.’’ The 27th annual Greater Palm Springs Pride Weekend can be considered the “Coachella” for the GLBT community in the Desert. This year, television personality, funny man and best-selling author, Ross Mathews will be the Celebrity Grand Marshal for Pride Parade. Look for the colorful parade floating down Palm Canyon Dr. Sunday Nov. 3 at 10 am. The same-sex wedding ceremonies will take place near the “Forever Marilyn” statue on the corner of Tahquitz Canyon Way and Palm Canyon Dr. between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm on Saturday Nov. 2. “Couples are being married approximately every 20 minutes in a gaylydecorated wedding canopy,” Cadieux stated. After the nuptials, couples are invited to attend a giant “I DO” celebration at the same location at 4:30 p.m. where comedienne Shan Carr is scheduled to MC. The ceremonies and post “I DO’ celebration was made possible through many generous donations from local wedding vendors. MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
by Julie Buehler
Don’t Let Facts Get In The Way Of Your Opinion
T
hat old slogan, “Knowledge Is Power” has seemingly given way to “Opinion Is Power” and that was on full display this past week as the sports world readied for the Return Of Peyton Manning on Sunday Night Football (which was heard on Team 1010 KXPS). In the week leading up to a highly anticipated showdown between a future Hall of Fame quarterback and the young stud standing tall in the shadow of his legend, many in sports media focused on Colts’ owner Jim Irsay and an interview he granted USA Today. Irsay essentially told the newspaper, that while Peyton was his quarterback, the Colts enjoyed great regular-season success, but the team was not well-balanced and therefore, failed to deliver more than 1 Super Bowl ring. The facts back that up, but we’ll get to the “inconvenience” of facts in a bit. He pointed to 3 franchises (Patriots, Steelers and Ravens) that won multiple rings and approached the building of a team differently as a sort-of model for the new era of Colts football. The Broncos’ head coach, John Fox, took quotes out of context, contorted them badly to mean that Peyton was to blame for not winning more than one ring, claimed Irsay should be happy with his championship and went on the offensive towards Irsay, calling his comments a “cheap shot.” And you guessed it, cue the media circus. As though this game didn’t provide enough compelling drama and interest, the media had to stir a pot that would have simmered immediately had one or two influential voices stepped in and offered some FACTS. But as the great Jim Murray said, “I find most people hate to be informed. People need to be amused, shocked… or angered.” So take a moment, be one of the few who are informed on this matter, and amuse others with knowledge, shock them with understanding and anger them that you have FACTS to back up your assertions. Fact: While Manning set NFL passing records, from his first playoff appearance in 1999 to his final in 2010, the Colts made the playoffs 11 times. They were ousted in their first game 7 times. Fact: The year the Colts won the Super Bowl, was 2006. A gritty safety named Bob Sanders returned from injury to join the team as the playoffs began. They went from the 21st ranked total defense in the regular season to the #1 ranked total defense in the post season. And while Irsay pointed out the Patriots were a more balanced team when they were winning Super Bowls, the fact is, in 2003 the Colts went to the AFC title game, where they lost to eventual Super Bowl
10
champion, the New England Patriots. In that game, Tom Brady threw for 237 yards and a touchdown. While the Patriots defense sacked Manning 4 times and intercepted him 4 times. Equal parts defensive prowess and offensive efficiency. The Patriots won one more ring the following year as Corey Dillion set a Patriots’ single-season rushing record, then they revamped their team and added Wes Welker and Randy Moss a few years later. Tom Brady became a fantasy football juggernaut and started averaging 13 more touchdowns the years he played from 20072012 than he did 2001-2006. He’s since lost 2 Super Bowls. So Irsay’s assessment that balance creates a team’s best opportunity to make deep playoff runs seems to prove accurate when looking at history and facts. But once Fox twisted his words and media outlets saw the tantalizing trail of drama, many failed to consider any facts and spouted their opinions as if they were fact. We all have opinions and are entitled to them, nothing wrong with having an honest conversation. However, with so much media now-a-days more intent on entertaining than informing, and creating more perceived power in opinion than knowledge, it’s becoming more important than ever to be aware of the difference. As for me, I want the spectacular spectacle of football to entertain rather than some contrived soap opera. Andrew Luck was far more Bold against the Broncos pass rush and the Colts’ defensive effort more Beautiful in stopping a potent Denver offense than any day-time television could be. ou just can’t turn a franchise around overnight. Unless you’re the Red Sox, that is. After scraping their behinds along the lowest pits of the deepest, darkest valley beginning with that September 2011 plummet and lasting through the bitter end of last season, the Red Sox have made a dizzying, breathless ascent. Now they’ve reached the highest mountaintop, the World Series. The casualty rate was high — two managers, Terry Francona and Bobby Valentine; one general manager, Theo Epstein; and a loss of trust and respect from a usually adoring fan base — yet what stands out about where they are is the speed it took them to reverse course 180 degrees. It was extreme, really, and as principal owner John Henry noted Saturday night, “We had to take extreme measures.” Those measures worked, so as the players splashed around on the beer-soaked sod of the Fenway Park infield Saturday night, Henry and team president and CEO Larry Lucchino had good reason to marvel at the best kind of whiplash an ownership group can go through. “We felt going into the season it was going to be a five-team race and we thought we would be in it, but you just have to be extremely gratified how these guys play the game,” Henry said. “In the middle of August and September, when teams are getting tired, these guys just seemed to kick it up a notch, as if through force of will.” Changing the clubhouse culture by cloning the grit and drive of Dustin Pedroia was indeed part of the reasoning behind the chemistry-heavy signings of Jonny Gomes, Shane Victorino, David Ross and Ryan Dempster. “It’s a cliche to talk about character, but sometimes it’s just true — these guys cared,” Lucchino said. “They played for each other. They played for a city and region they cared about. They deserve an enormous amount of credit for the chemistry they created and for the performances they brought out in each other.” Lucchino cited August 2012’s blockbuster trade with the Dodgers as the pivot point
for when the club’s momentum began to shift. “But it still required us to find the right players, and deploy the money successfully,” Lucchino said. “General Manager Ben Cherington did a fantastic job with that, in the seven major acquisitions we made this offseason. We found a manager who was just perfect for this team and this time in John Farrell, and this time we were able to get him loose from our friends in Toronto. We thought it would be a good step in the right direction.” But to think that the steps would gather momentum so swiftly, and with an unerring instinct for success, was way beyond Lucchino’s predictive powers. “I certainly hoped for it and prayed for it, but I never planned specifically for it,” Lucchino said. “We just wanted to take a big step in the right direction. We didn’t think we could step this far, this fast.” Even after an 18-8 April, Lucchino could not have come close to thinking he would be headed to the Fall Classic. “By the end of April, we had a pretty good feeling this was going to be a good team, but I don’t know that anybody, none of us were smart enough to say we were going to win 97 games and the American League pennant,” Lucchino said. “I wish I could say that our business plan called for it.”The Red Sox are back in business, but it took one big deal, followed by several smart ones and then a season’s worth of well-coached and wellexecuted victories for them to reach this point. That they got here does not surprise them. That they got here so fast does.

The Pedestrians’ Freak Flag Flies High
E
arlier this year, The Pedestrians, one of the most high-energy bands in the Coachella Valley was elected by popular vote of their equally enthusiastic fans to perform at Goldenvoice’s Tachevah Palm Springs Block party between weeks 1 and 2 of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. In front of a crowd of a few thousand, the band stormed the stage looking more like a theater troop than a rock-ska-punk-hip-hop-funk-soul band and carried the audience on a half hour rocket flight of rhythm and sound. After a summer hiatus, The Pedestrians are back at The Hood, this Saturday, October 26th. If you were to meet any of the individual members of the band offstage, you would likely never guess the existence of wild alter personalities. They are working guys and family men. Yet, when they come together as The Pedestrians, the freak flag flies high. A symbiotic relationship exists between the band and their fans, whose energy feeds off one another at every performance, elevating the experience to dance party meets performance art. Co-formed originally in 1993 by Michael Lewis, Rob Peterson and the late Darol Mata, the band has had various forms and members over the past two decades, but one constant has remained throughout – the passion for performance. “We perform because we love our music and our people,” shared Lewis. “It’s my heart and soul coming out for the people we play for. It’s our release that keeps us sane in a crazy world.” For the past several years the band’s membership has consisted of Michael Lewis and Rob Peterson on vocals, with Peterson also on percussion; Armando Flores on bass; Brandon Henderson on guitar; Tim Mc Mullen on drums; Cesar Hernandez on trumpet and vocals; and Morgan Fitch on trombone. Together, they fuse a lot of funk,
rich harmonies and horns over Afro Cuban rhythms for a sound that can be likened to Fishbone (a bit) old school Red Hot Chili Peppers (a little) Living Color (for texture) and Sublime (for seasoning). “There are six writers in the band. Everybody writes. Two people have Masters’ degrees in music. Everyone plays multiple instruments. That’s why we have such a wide range of styles,” explains Lewis. “And, Rob loves Samba. So we do that, too.” If their original sound is the motor, then The Pedestrian’s showmanship and costumes are the chassis. From head to toe, each member of the band carries off a thematic or unique look for the performance. Although it may first feel Vaudevillian, each style is worn with such genuine conviction, that it adds to the thrill ride for their fans. The fans fuel the band. One of their most popular songs is even named in tribute to their audience, CV People. “Every time we play the song, the fans connect and we connect right back with them,” shares Lewis. “I honestly don’t know how we keep it going sometimes, but the performances are almost like a spiritual healing – for the people dancing – and for us as players – it physically makes you stronger and feel better at the end of the gig than when you started. It’s the weirdest thing.” The whole package – of seven highlyenergized, costumed performers fully engaged in delivering the performance of a lifetime whether to a club audience of 50 or street fair of 5,000 – feeding off the energy of their enthusiastic fans – is what makes the freakish magic that is a performance of The Pedestrians. Check them out at The Hood, this Saturday, October 26th. Show starts at 9pm.

Metal in the Valley of Cries
Tattooed Nanny
by Eric the red (eric robertson)
O
ur desert’s music scene is an ever-changing landscape, with bands sprouting up like desert sage, and dying just as quickly. As with any area, some bands are capable of sticking out the turbulence, to carve a name for themselves in the sandy mountain walls. One such band is Remnants of Man. With their melodic riffing, powerful vocals and unending perseverance, Remnants of Man breathes a new life into our dry, parched metal scene. Consisting of vocalist Joe Lynn, Ruben Torres and Rudy Mendez blazing the fretboards of their 6-strings, Alex Milward destroying drums, and Daniel Wheat holding down the low end on the bass, Remnants of Man began playing local dive bars and venues in 2008, with the release of their first demo in 2009. Since their inception, they have worked relentlessly, and built a following throughout the valley, as well as most of southern California. When asked what the biggest challenge their band has had to overcome, Torres stated, “We’ve dealt with just about everything a professional band has dealt with. We’ve overcome traveling out of town, band members replacements, trying to release a CD with zero dollars in our pockets, but all of that disappears when we listen to the final product. In all honesty, it’s the music that keeps the drive in our bands career. At the end of all the blood, sweat and tears holding a finished product in your hands makes it all worth it.” As with many other bands, Remnants of Man are relatively active on the social media front. With tools such as free event
promotion, tagging of specific users and fans, and sharing of images from gigs and shows, websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have become an integral part to the bands arsenal of promotional weapons. The band states, “It’s amazing. When handled right, social media is the greatest tool for anyone, whether it’s a band or a business, for getting the word out there.” Members are consistently posting updates, sharing their hilarious antics, a multitude of music videos (such as the recently released “Will You Rise) and helping build the valley’s metal scene. With all the work these guys put into their music, promotion and shows, some might think the fun of playing in a band would shift to a more career oriented mentality. This is not the case for these gents. “(Practice) is always a laid back, ‘guys hanging out’ kinda jam even when we go into rehearsal with the notion to be serious. We can’t help it - we’re all good friends and have been for a very long time. So when we have practice, it’s like going outside to play with your friends when you were a little kid. Then after we settle down its time to run through several set lists and work out kinks in the music. Lately we have been incorporating more backup vocals, even some clean stuff to add to our live experience,” shared Mendez. With the mentality that playing music should be about good friends having a good time, this band will stand against the waves of our constantly fluctuating musical landscape for as long as they choose to continue. So if you’re ready to have your face melted with some “Awesome Space Metal,” as Ruben prefers to describe it, come check out Remnants of Man. They will be playing their Second Annual Halloween Bash, this Thursday, 10/24 at Plan B Live Entertainment, located at 32025 Monterey Avenue, Thousand Palms, CA 92276. This show is 21+, and includes Remnants of Man, Ekavohs and Death The Kid.

attooed Nanny’s inaugural gig played at the Red Barn last Saturday night showcased the band’s wide range of cover songs and ability to interpret them in their own style. Each song had the Tattooed Nanny style but never lost touch with the original’s sound and message. They have a sound that is just plain hard rock with a touch of grunge and that combination made the show a success. From Cheap Trick to Pink Floyd, The Cars, Free and Journey and of course Led Zeppelin, guitarists Jim Ryan and Kevin Mogan covered the leads and the rhythm giving homage to the original bands that wrote and made those songs famous while maintaining the distinctive sound that they have developed during the past four months. Front man Albert Montana demonstrated how a good cover band needs to hit all the notes in all the right places without strain. Almost every cover was pitch perfect and Montana showed what months of practice sounds like. The band has been in rehearsal since June working two times a week to
bring their style public. Matt Whyte on bass and Mike Aspell on drums kept the band grounded as they pounded out the hits. Matt, Mike, Jim and Kevin all provided backup and lead vocals throughout the show letting the music scene know just how much talent this cover band brings to the local music scene. The band’s two guitarists have known each other for many years and have played in and out of jam sessions and work with other bands. Jim Ryan said, “…we have gotten together to jam with various people and bands, but nothing ever stuck until this.” The band already has its own style and sound – as with most bands, this changes and develops as they continue to play for live audiences. The band has plans to start writing original songs once a planned studio is completed at the drummer’s house. While making it huge in the music business is a challenge, there is the great possibility of a huge local following with regional gigs as the band continues to develop. Missed them last week? Their next show is at The Red Barn, Friday, October 25th, 2013 at 9:00 P.M. No Cover. http://www.facebook.com/TattooedNannyBand Booking Contact: Jim Ryan – (760) 660-0960 Tattooednannyband.com

hen Arctic Monkeys burst on the scene in 2006, it was a blast of raw Punk power. At the beginning of the 21st century, bands like the Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Clinic and Razorlight attempted to re-invigorate the comatose carcass of Punk Rock. But it was the Arctic Monkeys who succeeded in harnessing the combustible energy and snarling attitude first exhibited by the inaugural class of ’77. In 2001, Alex Turner and Jamie Cook each received guitars for Christmas. Within two years they hooked up with drummer Matt Helders and bass player Andy Nicholson, and began gigging throughout Sheffield. The band followed the Punk paradigm perfected by the Clash, the Jam and Gang Of Four: muscular melodies, crackling, cogent lyrics and angular guitar riffs. Their demo recordings appeared on Myspace , (remember Myspace?) Along with other internet sights, prompting a fierce bidding war. Rather than signing with a behemoth corporation, Arctic Monkeys pledged their allegiance to Domino. They were swayed by the indie label’s D.I.Y. spirit. Their first record, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, debuted at #1 on the British charts, the fastest selling debut since Oasis released Definitely Maybe, in 1994. Citing tour fatigue, bassist Andy Nicholson left the band and was replaced by Nick O’Malley. The band sidestepped the dreaded sophomore slump with Favorite
Worst Nightmarein 2007. Basically a louder, faster version of Whatever… For their 3rd effort, the Monkeys completely shifted gears, abandoning cosmopolitan London for the desolate beauty of JoshuaTree. The band, along with …Nightmare producer James Ford, hooked up with Stoner Rock guru Josh Homme and retreated to Rancho de La Luna to record Humbug. Co-produced by Homme and Ford, and engineered by multi-instrumentalist (and Rock & Roll Zelig) Alain Johannes, the album was a conscious effort to swap their concise and compact Punk stylings for the sprawling ambiguities of Stoner Rock. It was a risk that paid off, raising the band’s profile in America. With their fourth album, provocatively entitled Suck It And See, the band returned to their roots. In 2013, Arctic Monkeys relocated to Los Angeles. Their fifth release, A.M., was recorded at Rancho de La Luna, with James Ford handling production chores. A.M. opens with “Do You Want To Know.” This stompy minuet shares musical DNA with Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” Roiling guitar riffs collide with lyrics that detail obsessive love… “Simmer down and pucker up, I’m sorry to interrupt/ It’s just that I’m constantly on the cusp of trying to kiss you.” Arctic Monkeys add a few more colors to their musical palette on “One ForThe Road” and “Knee Socks.” Each track locks into a seductive R&B groove, aided by Josh Homme’s creamy falsetto backing vocals.
On “One..” skittery guitar figures and an escalating kick-drum beat underscore Turner’s tale of sybaritc excess. “Knee Socks” weds a four-on-the-floor disco rhythm to squiggly guitar fills. The lyrics sketch out an afternoon assignation that turns serious… “Well you cured my January blues, yeah you made it alright/I got a feeling I might have lit the very fuse that you were trying not to light.” The action slows down for a couple of tracks, “No. #1 Party Anthem,” and “Mad Sounds,” allowing a glimpse at the softer side of the Arctic Monkeys. The former is a stately ballad. Here Turner positively croons! The instrumentation is softly brushed drums and shimmery guitar. The perceptive lyrics strip away the glamor associated with strip clubs and sex workers. The latter is anchored by sweetly languid guitar arpeggios, lithe organ fills and a tambourine shake. The lyrics pay homage to the restorative power of music. The best tracks on A.M. are “Arabella,” “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High,” “I Want It All” and “Snap Out Of It.” Opening with prickly guitar chords and a thumping backbeat, “Arabella” is a trippy tribute to a space-age seductress… “Arabella’s got some interstellergator skin boots and a helter skelter round her little finger and I ride it endlessly/She’s got a Barbarella silver swimsuit and when she needs shelter from reality she takes a dip in my daydreams.” Halfway through the track, the time signatures downshift to throbbing power chords and bludgeoning percussion.
Turner unleashes a day-glo solo that’s suitably psychedelic. A slinky tippy-toe rhythm and spidery guitar riffs power “Why’d You Always Call Me..” the lyrics chronicle Turner’s futile attempts to get laid. “I Want It All” is a Glam-tastic tour de force. Impossibly catchy, the track oscillates with a swivel-hipped grace. Chunky bass lines slither beneath a fuzzy, sugar-sweet guitar solo, recalling the early ‘70s Glam Rock of T-Rex and the Sweet. Finally, with “Snap Out Of It,” a hiccup-y rhythm and buzz-saw guitar riffs match Turner’s desperation as he attempts to talk an ex-lover out of a lifetime commitment with someone else.. “If that watch don’t continue to swing, or the fat lady fancies having a sing/ I’ll be here waiting ever so patiently for you to snap out of it.” Other interesting tracks include “R U Mine,” a perfect storm of sludgey electrostatic guitar riffs and a pounding backbeat. Turner and Cook execute a series of guitar solos that detonate like smart bombs. “Fireside” is built on bubbling percussion and Flamenco-tinged guitar chords. The album closes with “I Wanna Be Yours.” The lyrics, including couplets like “I want to be your vacuum cleaner, breathing in your dust,” come from ‘70s Punk-Poet John Cooper-Clarke. The melody fashioned by the Arctic Monkeys is by turns seductive and hypnotic. A.M. debuted at #6 on the Billboard charts, #1 on the British charts, and has been nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize. The band continues to defy expectations. Following their muse and exploring the uncharted is a gamble that has paid off.

Cassie: From Fear to Love T
he vast majority of dogs adopted and rescued from shelters are happy, well adjusted, tail wagging canines, instinctively looking forward with optimism. These rescue dogs adjust quickly to their new homes, bond with their family members, and are grateful for this second chance. They live in the moment trusting that things will go well. Then there are those who are fearful, with broken spirits and unloved souls. You can see the sadness in their frozen stares and stiff bodies which are unresponsive to touch. These are the dogs who have suffered massive neglect and abuse. I can tell within minutes if a dog has been abused, and I usually know within ten minutes the type of abuse he suffered. The small cream colored terrier was frozen as if imbedded in the concrete of the kennel floor at the county shelter. Her eyes rolled back to look at us, but she did not stop shaking and hyperventilating laboriously. A small black puppy scurried around her,

and they seemed to be a pair of some sort. They were cellmates in the quarantine area, “death row” for dogs, in the back of the shelter, labeled “rescue only”. Things didn’t go much better with the terrier when Lindi Biggi and I met with her in one of the more pleasant visiting rooms. The terrier continued to shake and pant. I’ve seen dogs tremble before, but the hyperventilating was something I never before witnessed. Loving All Animals took custody of both dogs, saving them from euthanasia which was scheduled that day. The little black dog, later named Toto, is still in foster care. We named the cream colored terrier Cassie, and she was bathed, microchipped, and readied for her foster home. However, she continued to tremble and pant as we drove to Palm Springs. It was heartbreaking, and I didn’t know how she would do. Foster parent Brigit Hartop reports, “Cassie entered my home as a shaking, hyperventilating little mound of curly fur, a little soul who first refused to leave her cage, and once the cage was removed, planted herself beneath a shoe organizer.
She wouldn’t move or stop panting, and her big brown eyes were constantly glazed over...Soon she began to wag her tail ever so slightly, or wink with her eyes, each time I waved to her or blew a kiss. Later on the second day, she stopped panting and ate some softened food I placed in front of her.” On the third day, Cassie quietly joined Brigit, tiptoeing carefully, and her eyes began to show emotion and even sparkle. Brigit coaxed her up on the bed, and she came alive, running and exploring, finally experiencing the joy of being a dog. Soon a potential adopter appeared. Ed Marrujo saw her photo, heard her story, and saw the potential in Cassie to become a wonderful canine companion. Ed is pictured here with Cassie, the dog he renamed Emma. He reports, “She’s come a long way since she first arrived when she spent a lot of time huddled under the table. At first she wouldn’t cross the threshold to enter the house, or go from room to room. She would not go up the stairs. Now she follows me everywhere. She’s really come out of it. It’s all a matter of getting a dog to the point of trust so they realize they are loved. They absolutely know whether someone loves them or not.” Ed advises someone adopting a new dog to arrange their schedule to spend time with them when they first arrive. Take the dog along when you go out. Cassie (Emma)

won’t need to make any more transitions. She’s home at last. Ed says, “She’s the perfect little girl! Tomorrow we’re planning a trip to the dog beach at Huntington.” Brigit concludes, “She conquered her fears enough to settle comfortably in wherever she would be next. Seeing the photo of her adopter hugging her, and hearing about their upcoming trip to the doggie beach, is a great reward for taking in the little ragamuffin who hid under the shoe rack.” What can you do if you encounter or adopt a dog that seems frightened? Move slowly, be patient, and let the dog move at his pace. 1. DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE DOG, DON’T REACH OUT YOUR HAND, BUT RATHER LET HIM COME TO YOU. OFFER A NICE TREAT. One friend won over a scared dog by throwing hotdogs up in the air for him to catch. 2. GET DOWN TO THE DOG’S LEVEL. The dog will be more comfortable if you are closer to his height. Sit on the ground and relax with your side facing the dog. 3. LET HIM SNIFF YOU. This is how dogs get acquainted. Be careful not to make any sudden movements. 4. PROCEED WITH OBEDIENCE TRAINING ONCE THE DOG STARTS TO RESPOND. The pup will learn that you’re in charge and he can trust you while his confidence grows. Training will increase your bond. Meanwhile, the small terrier with the big brown eyes has become a social butterfly, happily greeting guests and enjoying walks with her new dad. If you would like to be part of a happy ending for a shelter dog, contact Loving All Animals in Palm Desert at (760) 834-7000. We need loving foster homes, and of course potential adopters. Every dog we have rescued has a happy ending, proving love and lots of patience can overcome the darkest past.

Ramey Wine Dinner at Escena Grill
J
ust when you thought you’ve experienced all of the best a restaurant can provide for a wine pairing dinner, an entirely new happening unfolds right before your eyes and appetite. And so it was at the Escena Lounge & Grill last week when the final leg of their 2013 Around The World Summer Wine Dinner Series came to a journey’s end. Their themes of “Going to California” and “A Dinner Among Friends” featured the exceptional wines from Ramey Wine Cellars which paired with a four-course meal prepared by three distinguished Coachella Valley chefs. And why so many chefs in on the meal? Well—no one sitting around the bountiful table was questioning who was in charge and in the kitchen with Dinah. And, as I’ve mentioned in my past reviews, Escena has always limited their wine dinners to only 14 patrons—which becomes the most intimate dinner party in town. The very fortunate gathering truly enjoyed the food, wine, and conversation. Any enthusiast who enjoys Napa/Sonoma wines is quite familiar with those from Ramey Wine Cellars. Winemaker David Ramey is held in the highest esteem as a true innovator, a talented wine artisan and an industry revolutionary. More than 30 years ago David helped lead the way from technically proficient, squeaky clean wines to more natural winemaking methods that embrace the importance of “terroir”— creating distinctive wines of unique character. And Ramey’s background brings a smile to all of us who have experienced great California wine. He spent his early career creating benchmark wines for such wineries as Chalk Hill, Dominus, Matanzas Creek, and
Rudd. Ramey Wine Cellars was founded in 1996. Jeremiah Heffernan, Escena’s food & beverage manager, has done a wonderful job in presenting a great array of world class wine during the Summer Wine Dinner Series. A very personable guy, ask for him during any dinner for a great recommendation from their very reasonable wine list. As mentioned, we were pampered by a trio of chefs that included Executive Chef Anthony Mejia, Chef Justin Napfel—who arrived recently from The Parker, and the Guest Chef and Sommelier Kathleen Kirk. The threesome put together a triumphant meal that matched the featured wines seamlessly: The aperitif wine was JCB a French sparkling wine, a Crémant de Bourgogne, where the bubbles began to light up the evening. These sparklers carry a bit more fruity heft than their sister wines up in Champagne. But you’ll still get the Briochelike flavors that we like in a gold sparkling wine. The Sonoma Summer Salad consisted of sliced watermelon and Heirloom tomatoes with Italian burrata cheese, grilled bread, and a Balsamic Olive Oil. Ramey’s 2010 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay served as a tasty foil to the summer salad. It was bursting of green apple and laced with lemon, pastry, stone, and mint. Very fresh and full of energy. The Seared Scallops were perfectly seared; they were sweet, plump, and delicious. The English Pea Risotto was a bit toothsome but the carrot broth and Lavendar Beurre Blanc made it a very tasty dish. To match with a very tasty wine, the 2010 Ritchie Vineyard Russian River Valley Chardonnay came to play big-time with its complex aromas of Meyer lemon, nectarine, and honeysuckle. The palate was of citrus and orchard fruit flavors. Elegant and perfectly balanced, it was a tough call as to which Chardonnay the table liked the best. The red wines for the evening were the 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2010 Rodgers Creek Vineyard Sonoma Coast Syrah. I did mention that we were enjoying exceptional wines—yes? The Napa Cab was surprisingly mediumbodied and robed in beautiful opaque ruby. It was enjoyed with a medium-rare Hanger Steak—a classic combo. A rich yet lively wine with penetrating blackcurrant and cherry flavors that gain sweetness as it lasts in the glass. An herb-butter sauce accompanied the meat dish and some of us detected the secret ingredient of anchovy in the mix. The single-vineyard Syrah was bold and delicious and inky purple. Complex aromas
of candied black and blue fruits with flavors of melted licorice, espresso, mocha, and boysenberry did well to match the dessert course of California cheeses, Chocolate Truffles, Candied nuts and dried fruits. Well—I’m hungry all over again. And I’d like to thank JD Cole and the Escena staff for the wonderful time had at all three dinners. And a shout-out to all the good friends and
acquaintances that joined us at the table. In Vino Veritas et Caritas! Escena Lounge & Grill, 1100 Clubhouse View Dr. Palm Springs, Ca. 760.992.0002 Rick is the desert’s sommelier-abouttown conducting and entertaining at wine tastings and events. Contact winespectrum@ aol.com

E
ach week, I make an effort to visit a different restaurant here in our valley and mostly, I seek unique, privately owned fine dining restaurants that boast originality. This week, I strayed from my normal routine and dined at a chain restaurant that prides itself on fresh seafood with tropical flavors. Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion has many locations throughout the country and I decided to enjoy dinner with a very dear friend of mine in Rancho Mirage. As we walked toward the entrance, we could feel the warmth from the decorative tiki torches that lined the building. A pleasant hostess greeted us and we were seated in the dining room. The staff was welcoming, not only to us but all around us as well. It was a Monday night and by 7pm, the entire restaurant was full. For our first course, we would share the lobster potstickers and the pork belly dim sum. Both were delicious with our favorite being the crunchy potstickers with a subtly spicy miso butter sauce. After our appetizers, we shared a salad, a “Maui Wowie Shrimp Salad” with avocado and tomato tossed with fresh chopped butter lettuce. Our starters were perfect portions and each
course was appropriately portioned, but what was most impressive was how each plate was presented to us with detail. While we started with a glass of sparkling wine, we enjoyed a glass of pinot noir from a large wine list with great selections. The menu was not too large; however, it was difficult to decide on our entrée selections. Fortunately, there were a few combination plates that allowed us to enjoy several flavors paired together. My guest raved about her trio of seafood which included Hibachi Salmon, Macadamia Nut Mahi Mahi and Misoyaki Butterfish. Each paired with its own accompaniment and perfectly cooked, this dish has to be the most popular dish. I’ll also add that the bok choy was incredible. I would also have a combination with my Beef Short Ribs and Butterfish. Butterfish is essentially the same as Cod, so it was mild and soft, easily flaking apart. The short ribs were the best I have had and were reminiscent of grandmother’s pot roast. It was so tender that it easily pulled apart and melted in my mouth. How could we top this amazing meal? We preordered a mini chocolate soufflé with vanilla ice cream and paired that with
a chocolate martini made with Godiva chocolate liqueur and Chambord raspberry liqueur. I’m not sure which was better, oh wait, yes I am… the martini! What a great finish to an amazing meal. Everything was so full of flavor, intense even. My next visit will be to enjoy their “Aloha Hour” where drinks and appetizers are offered in the bar area for $6. Roy’s is open 7 nights per week from 5pm to 9pm with Friday and Saturday open an hour later, to 10pm. Aloha Hour is from 4:30 to 6:30 every night. Located near the River in Rancho Mirage, at 71959 Highway 111. Call for reservations or visit online at www.roysrestaurant.com

ESCAPE PLAN

If you miss old-school, 80’s style action dramas with iconic leads, look no further than ESCAPE PLAN. There’s no deep meaning here. The big (?) draw is watching Sly and Arnold share the same screen, and they do in numerous scenes. This complicated prisonbreak thriller from director Mikael Håfström was mostly shot on a great set built in a NASA compound in New Orleans. There’s a futuristic feel to the oppressive, high-tech setting, “The Tomb,” in which Ray Breslin (Stallone) finds himself as a hired “volunteer” prisoner to determine the security in this brutal prison under the control of a sadistic warden (Jim Caviezel). Quickly Stallone realizes he’s been tricked and wrongly imprisoned for life. Now he must team with fellow inmate Emil Rottmeyer (Schwarzenegger) to devise an escape from this incredibly fortified fortress. Yes, it’s all kind of ridiculous, but it looks great and there are some big twists and surprises. Costars Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Vinnie Jones, Vincent D’Onofrio and Amy Ryan are all on the same page. This is a manly movie. It’s a testosterone fueled, brawny action thriller, but the audience I saw it with was skewed mature with a majority of women. And there was applause over the end credits. Go figure. Producer Mark Canton was present before the film started but we were told he had a “medical emergency” and would not return for the Q&A. Rumor had it that Canton made a date with two comely women he met in the lobby, invited them to dinner and discovered there was no escape. Now playing.

Robert Redford is at least 77 (I’m assuming he doesn’t lie about his age). This involving movie is a one-man show about a mature man adrift in the open sea with no clear hope of rescue. The superior GRAVITY is about a lone woman adrift in space. But it had a deeper resonance of something much more than what appeared with such spectacular resonance in 3D on the big screen. I kept thinking while watching Redford face his fate that this modest budgeted film was meant more as a showpiece or calling card for Redford and writer-director J.C. Chandor than to tell a meaningful story. I admire Redford’s willingness to do many of his own stunts. And I feared for his nameless character. But I didn’t really care that much. And there were times I was tapping my foot waiting to find out how it all ends. But make no mistake; there are some tense moments in this drama about a lone man lost at sea. And nothing more. It’s not like the superb KON-TIKI where there was something to prove great risk and poignant loss. I hope Redford is nominated for something. He has not lost his ability to hold our attention while he’s on screen. There’s just something about that grizzled, mature face even if the story is not always that absorbing. Now playing. CARRIE I had high hopes and great expectations for the reboot of the movie made from Stephen King’s now classic horror novel that was originally directed by Brian De Palma in 1976. Chloë Grace Moretz is terrific as Carrie. She has a long and bright career ahead of her. She inhabits the repressed, depressed and emotionally abused teen. And Julianne

Moore is exceedingly unsettling as Carrie’s religious fanatic mom. Director Kimberly Peirce has nothing special to say that adds anything unique or contemporary to King’s horror classic. In fact this iteration struck me as an almost word for word re-do of the original screenplay. And that with a lesser ending than the original! Blame lazy (?) screenwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for the few that haven’t seen the original, I will not recount the big beats of the story -- and it’s a good story -- so you can at least be surprised if you choose to see this nice looking but totally unnecessary remake. Now playing. NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: THE DAY KENNEDY DIED
On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he rode in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas, Texas. That is a fact beyond dispute. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of JFK’s untimely death, a remarkable collection of exclusive footage reconstructs the story as it happened, moment-by-moment. Kevin Spacey narrates the story of that tragic day through the memories of some of the people who played a part in those extraordinary events – from the journalist who was with the Kennedy family all day to the nurse who checked his vital signs at Parkland Memorial Hospital to the cop who was with Oswald when he was murdered by Jack Ruby. New interviews and striking, rarely seen footage and photos make vivid the emotions and drama of that day. In all fairness, it must be noted that this Smithsonian sanctioned production comes with the imprimatur of the federally funded institute and as expected, there is no deviation from the official government approved scenario of Oswald as the lone shooter. Even a superficial examination of the now massive evidence raises doubts to the notion that Oswald acted alone – if indeed he acted at all. That said,
This true-life World War II story of rival soldiers who are faced with the challenge of working together in untamed wilderness in order to stay alive offers no big surprises but is nonetheless compelling and memorable. When both German and English fighter planes are shot down, the surviving men encounter each other in the frozen mountainous region of Norway. Taught by their superiors to fight the enemy to the death, the men realize that they must work together if they are to survive. Starring Stig Hoff (THE THING), David Kross (WAR HORSE) and Rupert Grint (HARRY POTTER) as the enemies who discover unexpected friendship amidst a shared struggle. The film has an authentic feel of time and place. Petter Naess directs. Magnolia. Blu-ray. BARRYMORE
The screen version of the William Luce play by the same name had its world premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. It was adapted by writer-director Érik Canuel from the 1996 Broadway production from which Christopher Plummer won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in 1997. Plummer, 82, has long had a fascination with legendary actor John Barrymore and it shows. The Village Voice said: “Christopher Plummer re-creates his Tony-winning performance as the charming louse in his booze-addled final days. Blessed with a script that is witty, insightful to the workings of the narcissistic Hollywood psyche, and often wonderfully bitchy, the film is also a wistful look at faded dreams and opportunities lost due to both vagaries of the business and self-sabotage.” RLJ/Entertainment. Ghosts D
one well, a draped white sheet covering your head and limbs can be a simple, mysterious and spooky Halloween costume. However, ghosts, apparitions and spirits are not only unique to this season, but are a year round phenomenon. Some ghosts can be benign and some can be intrusive. In Stephen King’s The Shining (Knopf Doubleday, 688 pages), ghosts not only inhabit a physical place, but also haunt the minds of the inhabitants. Writer Jack Torrance is struggling with sobriety. He has lost his teaching position, has problems with anger, a divorce is a looming possibility and he hasn’t written a thing in years. The only option for him and his family’s survival, is to take a job as a winter caretaker at the Overlook, an established hotel high in the Colorado Rockies. Snowed in for six months, he hopes the isolation and time will help him get back into writing and improve his family’s situation. Jack’s five-year-old son Danny has a gift. He is clairvoyant and is especially skilled at reading minds. Winifred -- Wendy, Danny’s mother -- believes his gift came from birth. He was born with a caul, the amniotic
supernatural guests. In a horrific showdown, Danny and his mom must battle the man they most love – Jack. But Jack is long gone, possessed by the hotel and its ghosts. Danny psychically calls for Hollorann, who receives the message in Florida and comes in the nick of time to join the fight and finish the Overlook. Stephen King delves into the haunting
the shining
of the hotel by its dead guests, but he also spends time showing the reader the ghosts of Jack and Wendy’s past. Both are haunted by memories of their own bad parents.

They cannot help but question their ability membrane covering his face. Danny is acutely aware of his parent’s problems and considers himself responsible. When the desperate family arrives at the Overlook, they meet the cook, Dick Hollorann, who immediately connects with Danny – psychically. He tells the boy he too has the “shine” -- the ability to read people and see the future. Only Danny is far more powerful than any other person with the “shining” he has ever met in his 60 plus years. Hollorann warns Danny to not enter the hotel’s room 217 and to stay away from the playground. If he “sees” something in or around the hotel, Hollorann advises Danny to just look away and it will disappear. Although Hollorann will be in Florida for the winter, he instructs Danny to “call” him mentally if he needs his help. As the winter sets in and the snow piles up, so do the horrors of the hotel. Jack is especially vulnerable to the hotel’s supernatural “guests.” He is insecure about his future, his sobriety is getting the worse of him, his writing is not working out and his anger is growing. He cannot see the hotel as the “problem”; rather, there is only his son and wife to blame. The Overlook is riddled with ghosts from every decade since the hotel opened in the early 1900s. The apparitions become manifest and even party together, drawing Jack into their fold. Wendy knows the “things” are around, and of course so does Danny. Unfortunately for Danny, looking away from the ghosts does not always work. The entities physically engage him. The “hotel” wants Danny! And Jack is recruited to kill him and his wife to make them forever a part of the Overlook. Perhaps Danny’s abilities will enhance the supernatural power of the hotel and its
to parent Danny. He is a special child with special needs. What’s really scary is their uncertainty if they are equipped to deal with his condition, his burden, his gift. King pushes the pathology of Jack, Wendy and Danny to their psychological limits and then tosses them into a sentient hotel where the only guests are deadly apparitions wanting to devour them. Wendy is heroic as she puts herself in harms way to protect her son. She must overcome her fear of Jack and the unknown. She must choose to believe Danny’s visions and trust his abilities. Although The Shining leaves questions unanswered about how the hotel became such an evil place and does not address the manifestation of the topiary animals, neither affects the overall story. There are many things we don’t understand about ghosts and hauntings. And how do you fight or destroy things that are already dead? This is why ghosts are frightening. Maybe some places and some people are more susceptible to their presence. Ghostly entities exist in a realm beyond our control and outside our reality, and occasionally we bump into them. King’s novel, The Shining is not Kubrick’s film. The two are very different. Danny’s story continues in Stephen King’s new novel Doctor Sleep.

Red Ribbon Week in the Coachella Valley
O
ur local schools will be filled with the color red this week and next in support of national Red Ribbon Week. The motto for Red Ribbon Week is “Drug Free.” Schools help students to remember and celebrate being drug free through many daily activities, inspirational speeches, and creative art projects that display the student’s active roll and support in remaining drug free. Shadow Hills High School is holding a blood drive closed to the students and staff
of the high school. With every able bodied student that donates blood, the student will receive a five dollar gift card to In ‘N’ Out Burger. The program is through Desert Blood Services. Students must be a Shadow Hills student and need parent permission if under the age of sixteen. I commend Shadow Hills for holding such an event for their students. An event such as a blood drive gives the chance for students to learn not only the importance of staying drug free, but the opportunity to unselfishly help someone they may never meet. Parents need to be actively involved in Red Ribbon Week. I am not suggesting that you take time off of work, but with all the talk of drugs and substance abuse, your children may have questions and curiosities. Your kids will not always come to you for help, which means you actively need to seek them out and talk to them. Also, try participating with your kids in the school events. If your child is one of the students giving blood, try also giving blood at a local blood donation facility. The simple act will show your child that you support their efforts, approve of their actions, and may bring them closer to you.
The goal for the week is to make a direct point to our children, and the children of others, that drugs are not a good life choice. Whatever the drug, if abused, children have a smaller chance of a healthy and successful life. I know we all want what is best for all of our children. I understand that your child could not possibly be using drugs, or even thinking about using drugs, but why ignore the slim chance they are?

Wells can offer. It was recently announced that the Indian Wells Golf Resort is undergoing some very exciting changes to enhance the visitor experience. According to Director of Sales & Marketing Michael Tebbetts, “Although the clubhouse is quite large we found that we were lacking in space for private parties and events to the point we had to turn away business for larger groups.” IWGR found a one-of-a-kind solution for their space inequity. IWGR recently held a groundbreaking to begin construction of a stunning 5,700 square feet climate-controlled pavilion with indoor and outdoor space for up to 400 guests. Located just across the bridge between the first tees of the Celebrity and Players Courses the panoramic vistas are like none other in the desert. The completion

don’t know about you but the whole government shutdown, debt limit manufactured crisis was like white noise to me. I didn’t want to hear about it as it aggravated me and proved that our two party system is completely broken with a gaggle of ‘leaders’ who do not care about us. Meanwhile, newscasters treated the shutdown like a sporting event confusing news with entertainment. The whole thing proved a generally held belief that government has become an impediment to our nation’s economic recovery. The government shutdown meant that the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), a little known division of the Treasury Department did not operate.
Haddon Libby:It’s all local
While the workers were paid for staying home, applications for new flavors and seasonal beers built up. An approval process that typically took three months before the shutdown is now expected to take longer. This hurt small breweries during one of their busier times of the year and served to have a dampening effect on job creation in this fast growing segment of our economy. Tony Magee, owner of Lagunitas Brewing Co. expressed the rage of many microbreweries in this Twitter post: “(Expletive) Feds are gonna shut down the already incompetent Gov while hundreds of small breweries, including us, have labels pending. Nice. Wanna regulate? Perform or get out of the way.” When local brewery, CV Brewery, was working on opening their plant earlier this year, they regularly faced a slow and arcane approval process that delayed their opening by well over six months. Despite government delays, CV Brewery is a great example of what has been happening nationally since In-Bev and MillerCoors went on acquisition sprees creating a near duopoly in the beer industry - an explosion of new beer breweries. So many new breweries have been added over the last few years that the United States has more beer brewers in operation (over 2,000)
than at any point since the 1880s! As In-Bev and MillerCoors grew to collectively control a 75% market share, these craft brewers grew from less than a 2% market share to 6% at present with expectations for 10% of all beer sales within the next three years. To understand the economic impact that these microbreweries can have on our economy, we need look no further than San Diego. Of San Diego’s 50+ breweries in operation, most have come into existence over the last three years. According to the Institute for Policy Research, there are more than 3,000 jobs in San Diego County that have been created through the growth of this business segment representing approximately $700 million in sales and over $300 million of direct, local economic impact. These breweries have also spurred tourism year-round with particular value to the local economy during off-peak tourism months. The value of the tourism breweries drive to San Diego was not measured by the Institute for Policy Research but is
considered significant and in excess of the annual Comic-Con Convention - considered to be one of the top events in the county in terms of economic impact. While beer has the potential to be an important economic driver to our local economy, another business type currently banned and illegal in our county can create as much if not more in local economic impact - food trucks. Legislation is currently in front of the Board of Supervisors in Riverside with a vote planned for November 5th. More on that next week. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer.”

his is another counter intuitive lesson and favorite of “It’s Your Nickel.” In addition to ourselves, and the nickel we hold in our hands, others have nickels too. They have Yen and Euros and all kinds of other nickels. The currency exchange rate of the $US Dollar affects our economy and the ability of foreigners to buy our goods all the time. Right now, the US dollar is at an 8.5 month LOW against the Euro and other currencies because of our inability to prove our creditworthiness to the world. In other words, our $US Dollar is much lower than the period prior to that. How could that possibly be good news? Don’t we want a stronger dollar? Not really.
persons who may have postponed winter vacations just a few weeks ago because of the government shut down. This should help us recover a bit through the holiday season here locally. Weaker $US Dollar, stronger purchasing power for foreigners…. And a big win for tourist towns like ours. So far in this article, I have concentrated on a personal pocketbook. Now imagine if you are a foreign company looking to purchase $US based assets in real estate or companies (stocks or equity). If you spend a $US billion dollars on a property right now you might save as much as $US 100 million
if you are moving from a currency that has shown a ten percent fluctuation over this period. On a smaller scale, a $US million dollar home would be a 900K home, and so on, and so forth. One can easily see why the smart money does indeed look at currency fluctuations. It makes a big difference. Remember, “It’s Your Nickel.”
When the $US dollar is weaker, foreigners can afford to buy American goods and services with LESS of their money. America becomes a bargain to travel to for example. Hotel rooms are cheaper for them, as well as airplane tickets or anything denominated in dollars. They can order goods online that translate into fewer units of their home currency, and save on purchases of almost anything, as long as that item is being sold to them based in $US. When we see periods of a weaker dollar, we tend to see stronger upticks in economies that depend on tourism. That is the case here. We will see an increase in hotel reservations and longer stays by

questions from readers:
Thank you all for your emails with legal questions. Here are a few of my favorites: Q: I was in an accident while walking across the street when I was hit by an at fault driver who did not have any insurance. I have talked to two attorneys who said there is nothing I can do since they were uninsured.………….. Help! A: If you had auto insurance with UM coverage you can present an uninsured motorist claim even though you were on foot. Your insurance company would take the place of the auto insurance the other party should have had and you can collect from them. However please understand your insurance co is now an adversary and you do not want to give any statements to your insurance company without the permission of your attorney.
Q: I was in an auto accident and did not seek medical help from my chiropractor for my soft tissue injuries for two weeks even though my car was totaled. Several lawyers have rejected the case………. why? A: Many lawyers will not accept an accident case unless the plaintiff (you) had medical assistance at an ER by ambulance or by car the same day. Ideally medical treatment should be with a medical doctor and not a chiropractor for the first visit. Insurance companies are stingier than ever and argue if you were really hurt you would have sought medical treatment right away at a hospital or ER. They argue how do we know you were not injured when you
slipped and fell in your shower or running around your pool……… or playing golf or tennis within the last two weeks? In addition, as a rule, the last medical provider you should see is your regular doctor. This is because your doctor has a history of all your medical problems and some of them could prove harmful or embarrassing if the matter were to go to trial. For instance I had a case where we were offered $40,000 two days before trial and my client said to accept it. I told her if we show up at court and act as if we were going to trial they would probably increase their offer to $50,000 the next day and if we started to select a jury the offer to settle would probably go up to $60,000. My client explained she was Catholic and had 5 kids and she had gotten pregnant 10

1031 Tax Deferred Exchanges
S
ection 1031 of the Internal Revenue (Federal Tax) Code allows for the taxes to be deferred on an exchange of like-kind properties. It is the real estate investor’s best friend when it comes to trading up, diversifying, leveraging or relocating their investments without having to pay capital gains tax on the transfer. By exchanging your real estate investments for other real estate investments, rather than just selling them, an investor can avoid paying capital gains tax on their holdings until such time as they do just sell them. As long as the property you get in the exchange is of equal or greater value than the property you give in the exchange, you pay no capital gains taxes! I did my first exchange (as a Realtor helping a client) in 1983. Even though the ability to defer the gain on a sale had been around since 1921 it was a time when the IRS had still not clearly defined the rules for 1031 tax deferred exchanges and was regularly challenging those who chose to take advantage of the opportunity to do so. The most famous of which was the Starker family who won their challenge from the IRS and established better defined regulations
28
for modern 1031 tax deferred exchanges. Today the rules and regulations for 1031 tax deferred exchanges are well defined and as such 1031 exchanges have become common place in today’s real estate investment strategy. “Like-kind property” has been loosely defined to be an exchange of real estate held for investment for real estate held for investment. A vacant lot exchanged for a rental house, or rental house exchanged for apartments, etc. Now before I go too far here, I must remind you all that I am a real estate broker and not an accountant or tax attorney so this is not tax or legal advice I am dishing out, just real estate information. But you get the idea about like-kind property. A true exchange of property would require that someone has a property that you want and you just happen to have a property that they want… possible, but unlikely. Going back to my first exchange in 1983 we had 4 different properties and 4 different investors and their brokers involved in order to get everyone a property that they wanted! It was called a “stew pot” where everyone put their deed into the pot (escrow) and then everyone got the deed to the property that they wanted out of the pot. The key to the success of this type of exchange was that each participant was exchanging a deed for a deed. The Starker family simplified all of this by creating a delayed (or now called a “Starker”) exchange using an accommodator or “qualified intermediary”. This is how the
majority of 1031 exchanges are done today. The investor (exchanger) lists and sells their property but before closing escrow inserts the accommodator in as the seller. The accommodator receives the proceeds of the sale (NOT THE INVESTOR) and holds them in a trust account. The investor then finds a new property and negotiates the purchase substituting the accommodator as the buyer. The accommodator uses the investor’s proceeds held in trust to purchase the new property and then deeds the new property to the investor at the close of escrow, thus allowing the investor to exchange a deed for a deed. The IRS now has specific rules for the timing of this type of exchange. The investor must identify the property to be acquired within 45 days from closing escrow on the original property and then the investor must close escrow on the new property within 180 days from closing escrow on the original property. To make exchanges even easier
years earlier and had an abortion, however her husband did not know about it. Her husband had told her he was going to take off of work to support her at the trial. She was afraid the abortion would come out and that her marriage was worth more than the extra $10-20,000. I have had other cases where my client’s medical records referenced an alcohol or drug problem or a sexually transmitted disease and or other sexual issues and they did not want those things to come out in trial. It could be a reference to psychological problems or sexual orientation problems too. there are many professional companies that specialize in 1031 accommodator services. These are just some of the basics about 1031 tax deferred exchanges. For more information you can go on line and search “1031 tax deferred exchange” or as always contact your trusted real estate agent. This week’s real estate tip: The 1031 tax deferred exchange can be used for investment properties and second homes that can ultimately be converted into a primary residence. This can have some very significant retirement/exit strategy benefits. There are very specific rules regarding this type of strategy and so investors considering this should consult not only with their trusted real estate agent, but also with their tax accountant and tax attorney. Bite - Embrace the Dark
H
alloween is fast approaching. Would you like to do something unique, fun and memorable? Something that captures the spirit of Halloween but exudes sophistication and exclusivity? Wandering supper club PS Underground has just the thing. “Bite - Embrace the Dark” is their offering for this, the most ghoulish of holidays. Held on October 29th, 30th and 31st, “Bite” will be at a location disclosed to you by email 24 hours before your experience. This multi-course dinner of gothic proportions with free-flowing blood, I mean, wine will combine the creative culinary skills and theatrics for which PS Underground have become all the rave in culinary circles. One of their recent dinners converted a restaurant into the Titanic for a night. Bathed in blue light, diners were invited to a re-creation of the dining hall on the Titanic. Dinner, music and surroundings simulated the last supper on the Titanic before its tragic sinking.
Another dinner was held in a photography studio. The typically white walls were transformed into a visual experience. For one course, you were underwater with fish swimming about. During another course, you were surrounded by fire with fire bubbling from the center of the table. Interspersed throughout the dinner, servers engaged in performance art. Headquartered at ShareKitchen, PS Underground creators Michael Fietsam and David Horgen have become stars of the local culinary scene via their one-of-akind dining experiences. Initially avoiding the spotlight and preferring to keep their evening’s word of mouth affairs, their success has made their low key approach hard to keep underground...and for good reason...there is nothing else like their monthly dinners in the Coachella Valley. For more information on “Bite”, go to www.PSUndergroud.com. Tickets are $97 plus tax and tip. Bring your ghoul friend and an appetite for a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

Community DESERT SANDS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES Proceeds Will Support “HIKE 4 EDUCATION” Fundraiser Technology in the Classroom
T
he nonprofit Desert Sands Educational Foundation (DSEF) was established in 2011 to close the ever-widening gap between what an education costs and what the state funds for Desert Sands Unified School District (DSUSD). This year, the Foundation is focusing on expanding the availability of technology in the classroom by hosting a hiking event on Sunday, November 3, at Lake Cahuilla in La Quinta. Proceeds will fund Chromebook laptops which will better prepare students for the critical thinking required by California’s new Common Core Standards as well as for being effective in the workplace. The Hike 4 Education will have 3 different routes – Easy (3 miles), Moderate (5 miles) and Strenuous (10 miles). Entry fees, regardless of route, are $30 for Adults 18 and up, $15 for Youth 17 and under and $15 for Seniors 65 and older. Parking inside Lake Cahuilla Recreation Area is included in the registration fee, and all participants will receive a “goodie bag” and a complimentary event T-shirt. There will also be raffle prizes, and raffle tickets will be sold at the event. Participants must sign up and pay online at

Hike4Education.com. DSUSD has 29,000 students in its Kindergarten through 12th grade schools and has already purchased 4,000 Chromebooks. A Chromebook is a personal computer running Chrome OS as its operating system. It’s designed to be used while connected to the Internet and support applications that reside on the Web, rather than traditional applications that reside on the computer itself. The goal of Hike 4 Education is to generate funding for at least 7,000 additional Chromebooks. Support of the community and corporate sponsors is critical to this event’s success, and there are 3 levels of sponsorship available: Event Sponsor ($250), Program Sponsor ($500) and Title Sponsor ($1,000 minimum donation). ARIES (March 21-April 19): “I’m greedy,” says painter David Hockney, “but I’m not greedy for money -- I think that can be a burden -- I’m greedy for an exciting life.” According to my analysis, Aries, the cosmos is now giving you the go-ahead to cultivate Hockney’s style of greed. As you head out in quest of adventure, here’s an important piece of advice to keep in mind. Make sure you formulate an intention to seek out thrills that educate and inspire you rather than those that scare you and damage you. It’s up to you which kind you attract. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): French philosopher Simone Weil described the following scene: “Two prisoners in adjoining cells communicate with each other by knocking on the wall. The wall is the thing which separates them but is also their means of communication.” This muted type of conversation is a useful metaphor for the current state of one of your important alliances, Taurus. That which separates you also connects you. But I’m wondering if it’s time to create a more direct link. Is it possible to bore a hole through the barrier between you so you can create a more intimate exchange? GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “I had tended to view waiting as mere passivity,” says author Sue Monk Kidd in her memoir. “When I looked it up in my dictionary, however, I found that the words ‘passive’ and ‘passion’ come from the same Latin root, pati, which means ‘to endure.’ Waiting is thus both passive and passionate. It’s a vibrant, contemplative work . . . It involves listening to disinherited voices within, facing the wounded holes in the soul, the denied and undiscovered, the places one lives falsely.” This is excellent counsel for you, Gemini. Are you devoted enough to refrain from leaping into action for now? Are you strong enough to bide your time? CANCER (June 21-July 22): “Venice is to the man-made world what the Grand Canyon is to the natural one,” said travel writer Thomas Swick in an article praising the awe-inciting beauty of the Italian city. “When I went to Venice,” testified French novelist Marcel Proust, “my dream became my address.” American author Truman Capote chimed in that “Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs at one go.” I bring this up, Cancerian, because even if you don’t make a pilgrimage to Venice, I expect that you will soon have the chance, metaphorically speaking, to consume an entire box of chocolate liqueurs at one go. Take your sweet time. Nibble slowly. Assume that each bite will offer a distinct new epiphany. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Do you have any interest in reworking -- even revolutionizing -- your relationship with the past? If so, the coming weeks will be an excellent time to do so. Cosmic forces will be on your side if you attempt any of the following actions: 1. Forgive yourself for your former failures and missteps. 2. Make atonement to anyone whom you hurt out of ignorance. 3. Reinterpret your life story to account for the ways that more recent events have changed the meaning of what happened long ago. 4. Resolve old business as thoroughly as you can. 5. Feel grateful for everyone who helped make you who you are today. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “As a bee seeks nectar from all kinds of flowers, seek teachings everywhere,” advises the Tibetan Buddhist holy text known as the Dzogchen Tantra. That’s your assignment, Virgo. Be a student 24 hours a day, seven days a week -- yes, even while you’re sleeping. (Maybe you could go to school in your dreams.) Regard every experience as an opportunity to learn something new and unexpected. Be ready to rejoice in all the revelations, both subtle and dramatic, that will nudge you to adjust your theories and change your mind. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don’t you wish your friends and loved ones would just somehow figure out what you want without you having to actually say it? Wouldn’t it be great if they were telepathic or could read your body language so well that they would surmise your secret thoughts? Here’s a news bulletin: IT AIN’T GOING TO HAPPEN! EVER! That’s

why I recommend that you refrain from resenting people for not being mind-readers, and instead simply tell them point-blank what you’re dreaming about and yearning for. They may or may not be able to help you reach fulfillment, but at least they will be in possession of the precise information they need to make an informed decision. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpios are obsessive, brooding, suspicious, demanding, and secretive, right? That’s what traditional astrologers say, isn’t it? Well, no, actually. I think that’s a misleading assessment. It’s true that some Scorpios are dominated by the qualities I named. But my research shows that those types of Scorpios are generally not attracted to reading my horoscopes. My Scorpios tend instead to be passionately focused, deeply thoughtful, smartly discerning, intensely committed to excellence, and devoted to understanding the complex truth. These are all assets that are especially important to draw on right now. The world has an extraordinarily urgent need for the talents of you evolved Scorpios. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “If you’re in pitch blackness, all you can do is sit tight until your eyes get used to the dark.” That helpful advice appears in Norwegian Wood, a novel by Haruki Murakami. Now I’m passing it on to you, just in time for your cruise through the deepest, darkest phase of your cycle. When you first arrive, you may feel blind and dumb. Your surroundings might seem impenetrable and your next move unfathomable. But don’t worry. Refrain from drawing any conclusions whatsoever. Cultivate an empty mind and an innocent heart. Sooner or later, you will be able gather the clues you need to take wise action. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Have you thought about launching a crowdfunding campaign for your pet project? The coming weeks might be a good time. Have you fantasized about getting involved in an organization that will help save the world even as it feeds your dreams to become the person you want to be? Do it! Would you consider hatching a benevolent conspiracy that will serve as an antidote to an evil conspiracy? Now is the time. You’re in a phase of your astrological cycle when you have more power than usual to build alliances. Your specialties between now and December 1 will be to mobilize group energy and round up supporters and translate high ideals into practical actions. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In 2008, writer Andrew Kessler hung out with scientists at NASA’s mission control as they looked for water on the planet Mars. Three years later, he published a book about his experiences, Martian Summer: Robot Arms, Cowboy Spacemen, and My 90 Days with the Phoenix Mars Mission. To promote sales, he opened a new bookstore that was filled with copies of just one book: his own. I suggest that you come up with a comparable plan to promote your own product, service, brand, or personality. The time is right to summon extra chutzpah as you expand your scope. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Right now you have a genius for escaping, for dodging, for eluding. That could be expressed relatively negatively or relatively positively. So for instance, I don’t recommend that you abscond from boring but crucial responsibilities. You shouldn’t ignore or stonewall people whose alliances with you are important to keep healthy. On the other hand, I encourage you to fly, fly away from onerous obligations that give you little in return. I will applaud your decision to blow off limitations that are enforced by neurotic habits, and I will celebrate your departure from energy-draining situations that manipulate your emotions. Homework: Imagine you get three wishes on one condition: They can’t benefit you directly, but have to be wished on someone else’s behalf. Freewillastrology.com. What the Kale?
F
requently I write about certain foods that will make your body smile. Happy belly, happy mind, happy you. Growing up you may have heard, eat your greens. Engaging in a diet rich in color reaps a plethora of benefits internally and externally. If we are what we eat why would you consider anything other than a healthy diet? Immerse yourself in a diet rich with hues of greens, reds, purples, and yellows. Or, you could partake in a diet that is heavily processed, canned, and saturated with hormones and GMO’s. You have a choice to allow your body to sing with joy or scream in agony. Consider adding kale to your colorful diet. The amazing leafy vegetable is beneficial for your body. Depending on the strain of kale, its consistency can be a bit tough, prompting you to chew and chew. How you prepare this delicious green is entirely your choice. You can blend it in a smoothie, sauté it in a pan, bake it in the oven etc…. You may be asking why should I consume kale? It is inundated with nutrients and known to have cancer-fighting properties. Kale is rich in iron and has been referred to as the “new beef” according to AARP.org. AARP also gives a word of caution to those who are consuming anti-coagulant medications, such as warfarin (a.k.a Coumadin) you must avoid large amounts of kale. Kale is rich in vitamin K and offers more than a thousand percent of the recommended daily amount. This could be dangerous and interfere with medication. Keep in mind you can have too much of a good thing. As for me, I prefer baby kale for salads and a healthy leaf for chips. Yes, kale chips are easy to prepare, healthier than a potato chip, and delicious. Here is a recipe worth considering and contemplate a smooth glass of red wine along with a cheese board. Kale Chips ~About six servings Remove the tough stems from the kale and wash and spin dry the kale thoroughly.
This recipe can easily be doubled. Just be sure to rotate the baking sheets in the oven for even cooking. As mentioned, some people cook them at a higher temperature, California-style, which makes a crunchier, drier kale chip than those cooked at lower temperatures. I like them both ways. If you wish to roast them in a 425ºF (218ºC) oven, they’ll take about 12 minutes to cook. 6 to 8 cups (140 to 200 g) kale leaves; if large, tear them into bite-sized pieces 1 tablespoon olive oil flaky sea salt or fleur de sel minced garlic (optional) 1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF (180ºC.) 2. Put the kale on a baking sheet and drizzle with the olive oil, then massage it into the leaves. 3. Spread the kale leaves in an even layer on the baking sheet and put in the oven. After about 5 minutes, use a spatula to separate any leaves of kale that are clumping together. 4. Continue cooking the kale for about 20 minutes, until the leaves are crisp. Remove from the oven and sprinkle fairly generously with salt. Eating healthy is rewarding. You will feel and look vibrant. Your health is your greatest asset. Bronwyn Ison, Owner of Evolve Yoga. www.e-volveyoga.com (760)564-YOGA

A Plan to Trump Fear T
Often the job required Barbara to make a presentation to the client’s employees. Barb’s plan worked. Knowing assertiveness was a condition of the position, forced her to accomplish something very scary or face termination. Without the conditional pressure to conquer her fear of shyness, Barb may have remained in her shell. By flexing that ‘assertive muscle’ everyday, she gained increased confidence. Someone once said, “Fears are like annoying relatives. Ignoring them will not make them go away.” Facing your fear headon as Barbara did is a viable way to deal with those demons that make your heart race and your palms sweaty. Successful individuals know taking on a challenge is the pathway to eliminating barriers. So, muster up a little courage like Barbara and make a plan to conquer a fear that is holding you back. Borrow a little moxie from your four-year old inner child and know all things truly are possible. You just need to take a deep breath, and initiate the first step. Once you realize the power in confronting those debilitating doubts, your confidence will soar and eventually your dreams become reality. is antifungal, thus it can also be used to treat other fungal skin infections on other parts of the body. Not all over the counter creams or ointments are the same. Any antibiotic ointment will not cure Ringworm or Athlete’s Foot. Anti-itch cream, such as cortisone or hydrocortisone, will make fungal skin infections worse.
Dr. Peter, my daughter was sent home from school because she has “pink eye”. I was told she had to see a doctor, but by the time I could get an appointment for her, the redness in her eye was gone. Should she still see the doctor? -Betty, Rancho Mirage Betty, “pink eye” (conjunctivitis) is the common name given to redness or inflammation to the conjunctiva or whites of the eyes. The condition can be caused by viruses, bacteria or allergies. It is most commonly caused by a virus, and like a cold, will usually resolve on its own in a few days to a week. Usually viral conjunctivitis is associated with increased watery discharge, whereas bacterial conjunctivitis may have thick green or yellow discharge. Bacterial conjunctivitis requires antibiotic eye drops or ointment for treatment. Pink eye is
contagious and is commonly transmitted when an infected person rubs his/her eye and then touches someone and that person then rubs his/her eye. That is why it is much more common in young children who don’t usually wash their hands. If your daughter’s eyes are no longer red and without any discharge, than she likely had a viral or allergy “pink eye” that got better on its own but if she is complaining of eye pain, than she should still see the doctor.
Dr. Kadile, I just came back from my doctor’s office where I had my annual physical. Why do I have to turn my head and cough when he performs the dreaded genital exam? -Timothy, Palm Desert Timothy, you are apparently referring to the exam when the doctor is checking for hernias. Hernias are protrusions or ruptures through a membrane or wall, most commonly in the lower abdominal wall. When you cough during the exam, this causes increased pressure which can cause
PSYCHIC READER
a protrusion through the abdominal wall “push out” and become easier to detect by the doctor’s finger. Surgery may be needed depending on the size of the hernia and if it is causing pain. You turn your head during the exam so you don’t cough on the examining physician’s head.

he other day at a family outing I observed Alina, my fearless four year old niece who thinks all things are possible. This youngster takes any challenge seriously. At the gathering arranged to help a friend move, Alina first assessed the situation to understand the process. After contemplating for a few moments, she strode up to the burly guys moving large boxes off the truck and in a voice bigger than her small stature commanded, “Give me one of the boxes. I can handle it.” Not all of us have the self-confidence of a four year old. I asked my friend Barbara, a successful entrepreneur, if her courage to confront daunting goals came naturally. With a wise smile she shared her story. As an extremely shy child, Barb found it difficult be assertive as a young adult. Instinctively she knew that in order to overcome shyness, she needed to challenge herself by creating a scenario that forced her to engage with strangers. Barb’s solution was to apply for a position in sales with a consumer credit reporting company that required her to call on prospective clients including banks, and credit unions. Her job was to visit a potential client, introduce herself, connect with the management and determine if the company she represented could provide their services.
