BB’S Halloween Bash

obody throws a party like BB Ingle. After 28 years he has become legendary here in the desert for being the Master of Events and the Godfather of Parties. It all started back in the 80’s when he and a few others founded the famous BB O’Briens Sports Bar. After the establishment was sold, BB continued on with the tradition of throwing holiday parties and special events in the Coachella Valley. “I try to throw a party once a month,” stated Ingle in a recent interview, speaking in his smooth, laid-back Alabama twang, which is where he originally hails from. “Every party has been great, but I would have to say that my favorite party is the Halloween Bash because of all the costumes and it’s always the biggest.” He also says that one of his favorite party moments is when he gets to go on stage and sing ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ with the band. And then of course there’s the time he sky-dived into the party at the El Dorado Polo Grounds. “I’ve had a passion for gathering people together in celebration since I was a young boy.” And even though he also owns The Water Store in Palm Desert on Highway 111, he says that throwing parties is still his main career. He also has a passion for animals and a portion of the proceeds from all of his parties goes to the Pet Rescue Center. BB would like to invite everyone to his 28th Annual Halloween Bash at the spectacular Palm Springs Convention Center. It promises to be the most entertaining event of the year and be even bigger and more outrageous than last year’s party, which had over 5,000 in attendance. “Last year was such a success that we’re happy to be returning to this world class venue again this year,” boasts BB, “where we will have more rooms, definitely MORE BARS, more DJ’s and for those that work in the service industry and get there late, more time. The party will continue until 4:00am

or until Dracula sleeps.” There will be 6 large rooms of entertainment including 20 confirmed DJ’s, and one surprise celebrity guest DJ playing a variety of music including top 40, rock, hip-hop, EDM, progressive house, Dub, classic rock and R&B. The AllStar Party Band which is comprised of; Mark Gregg, Clark Souter, Lara Karuna, Dan Potruch, Ryan Landry and Misti Padron, will also be performing. “After 28 years of parties we have all ages from 21 to 75, many of our original party goers’ children now attend. We make sure to play all types of music in different rooms to keep everyone happy and having a good time.” And this year’s event guarantees to deliver. BB has several surprises up his sleeve but shared a couple of them. “This year we are taking the party to a whole new level with bigger and better sound and lighting than ever before provided by DJ Ray Phillips with RSP Productions. Returning this year we will have the huge projector screen with ‘Fire Text’ where some guy can see a hot girl in a vampire costume from across the room and text her up on the screen to come and meet him at the bar.” But BB says his new pet project, The Dancetronauts,

which he will be introducing to the desert for the first time, will be the most exciting. “With a 100,000 watt custom designed sound and light experience featuring a mobile spaceship and hot go-go dancers, this is a must see.” For those who might think you can’t afford it. That family tradition of integrity and personal care was beautifully recreated through his children, Phil and Char Carter when they opened Kitchen Kitchen here in the desert 33 years ago. s there truly any better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than to sample decadent cupcakes, international coffee, wine and Champagne, in search of the valley’s best cupcake all the while raising money for an organization that feeds our valley’s hungry? I think not! Neither does Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio who will be presenting the Fantasy Cupcake Challenge on November 18 from 1-4 pm. All proceeds from the event will be benefitting Well in the Desert, our local organization that has provided daily nutritious meals, emergency food assistance, weekly supplemental food distribution, and access to community services to those affected by poverty, including the working poor, the homeless, seniors and the handicapped for more than 15 years. The competition will include 12 professional chefs and bakers from top local restaurants as well as a group of folks who just like to bake for fun. Their mission is to fuel programs for poverty prevention, direct services for poverty intervention, and organize efforts to advocate for the poor. Game Show Mania is Fun for All Ages! I

f you’re planning a party or special event, one of the most important items on the check list will be to make sure your guests have fun. PROTECT YOURSELF FROM FRAUD

f you buy gas, go to a restaurant or make online purchases, you unwittingly give criminals the chance to steal your hard earned money. Frank Abagnale, the fraudster whose life story was told in the movie, “Catch Me If You Can” is now a security expert. He tells the story of a 2007 security breach that caused $150 million in fraud on the debit and credit cards of T.J. Maxx customers. Those using credit cards had their money back in a few days. Debit card holders had to wait on average two to three months to get their refunds. For many people, this can be the difference between being able to pay the monthly rent or putting food on the table. This also shows the importance of using credit cards for your purchases whenever possible. Using myself as the example, a fraud was attempted against me at a gas station in downtown Los Angeles. I slid my credit card into the swiper unit built into the fuel dispenser. It didn’t work. I went inside and

put through the transaction but now had to use a debit card as their credit system “wasn’t working.” At the end of the month, I spotted two transactions for identical amounts from the station on both cards. In talking it through with the bank that held both cards, I learned that the station was on a list of high fraud locations. This was either due to the operator, a bad employee or another practice called skimming. This type of fraud is very easy to miss when reviewing transactions. Skimming is where the criminal sits across the street from the station with an antenna and a laptop. Sometimes they

use a pinpoint camera as well. Whichever way they choose, they grab the information from your card and complete transactions faster than you can drive home. To be safe, you are best to move the transaction inside, use a credit card or something known as cash. While its demise is often discussed, cash still works although you seem to need more for most transactions despite the lack of inflation in the economy. While gas stations are high fraud locations, online purchases remain the top place for fraud. Drawing from experience once again, my wife’s computer had malware from a bogus program that she installed. All of her accounts were being compromised. Excluding malware that steals your keystrokes and information, do you have any idea who is receiving your information on the other side of an online store? As we’ve seen from multiple data breaches of large financial institutions and companies, there is no such thing as a 100% secure online transaction as international

criminal groups constantly look for ways to steal. Your best protection is to use one credit card specifically for online transactions. Another spot for frequent fraud is a restaurant. Think about it - a server takes your card out of sight and returns with the receipt to sign. What happens in between? A nefarious employee could steal the information for personal use or sale to a gang or criminal group that pay for such information. Even if you are careful, criminals will always find a way to get what they want. That is why you should use credit cards in the situations described above. Also remember that many fraudsters do not steal large amounts quickly anymore as it is too easy to get caught. As such, they steal smaller amounts on a monthly basis. Many people miss these smaller charges and after 90 days, it is difficult if not impossible to get your money back from your financial institution.

DWIGHT YOAKAM “3 Pears”

espite the fact that he’s been a Country recording artist for more than 25 years, Dwight Yoakam has never been part of the Nashville establishment. Yoakam grew up in Kentucky and Ohio, but he began his music career in the early 80s in Los Angeles. Yoakam honed his chops in Punk clubs playing alongside Roots-Rock bands like X, Los Lobos, The Blasters and Rank & File. Yoakam’s take on Country music stripped away the glitz and artifice, hewing more closely to the Hillbilly and Honky Tonk paradigm that was big in the 50s. Although he rocked a traditional cowboy hat, Yoakam’s tight jeans and swivelhipped moves were more of an homage to Elvis Presley, than 80s Country king Kenny Rogers. His 1986 debut, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc, Etc was completely embraced by the Rock cognoscenti. In fact, Yoakam was the first (and probably the last) Country artist to be played on MTV. 17 albums later Yoakam has released 3 Pears. This is his first album of original material in seven years and his most ambitious effort to date. 3 Pears opens with the trademark twang of “Take Hold Of My Hand.” Thumping funk/punk bass lines propel this rollicking tale of romantic faith: “I’ve lusted for love but lust is so blind, and trust for a heart is a hard thing to find/But what’s left of yours might help to heal mine.” The Beatles loom large on a couple of the songs here. Anchored by an echo-y big beat and Countrypolitan twang, the title track is a twisty tribute to both John Lennon and George Harrison.

On “Trying,” the bare bones of the melody recalls the Fab Four’s “From Me To You.” Stuttery drums and a walking bass line flesh out this account of love gone wrong. Yoakam creates a new hybrid on “It’s Never Alright.” The arrangement blends plaintive vocals and lush piano fills with full string and horn sections. The result is Baroque Honkytonk (Kind of George Jones meets 70s Elton John!) Yoakam hands over the production reins to Beck on “Heart Like Mine” and “Missing Heart” and they are the best tracks on the album. The former weds circuitous acoustic guitar riffs to a ramshackle handclap rhythm, (similar to the Monkees’ “Last Train To Clarksville”). It’s an anguished story of heartbreak cloaked in a jangly 60s style pop confection. The latter is an intoxicating mixture of spiraling acoustic and electric fills with high lonesome steel guitar. Yoakam’s vocals match the yearning intensity of the desolate lyrics: “I am an open wound, I searched so long/ And all I found is now gone, because anywhere I looked was always wrong.” Other standout tracks include “Dim Lights, Thick Smoke,” a yowling roadhouse rocker that expands on the themes first explored on Hank Thompson’s “Wild Side Of Life” and Kitty Wells’ answer tune, “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels.” “Waterfall” lassos whimsical, almost Seuss-ian lyrics to an irresistible melody. “Nothing But Love” is positively yodel-riffic! Finally on “Rock It All Away,” Yoakam drops the cynical façade long enough to actually fall in love. The album closes with the tender evocation of “Long Way To Go.” Spare and mournful, it’s a showcase for just vocals and piano. The mood mirrors the melancholy mien of Jackson Browne’s “The Load Out.” These days most Country superstars draw their inspiration from ancient sources like the Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Luckily Yoakam still carries the torch for innovators like Hank Williams, the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers. 3 Pears is beautifully nuanced and textured. It serves as an encomium to those trailblazers yet firmly rooted in the 21st century. Yoakam is just as much an outsider as he was at the beginning of his career. That seems to suit him just fine.

Hollywood Star, Margaret O’Brien launches The 2012 Legends at Lyons Series.

n association with Chi-Chi Productions, Lyons English Grille located at 233 East Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, will launch “The Legends at Lyons” series on Sunday, October 21, with the delightful Hollywood Oscar winning actress, Margaret O’Brien. For anyone, like myself, who attended the appearance of Baby Rose Marie at Lyons, you will enjoy this series immensely! On that evening, I met the sophisticated Margaret O’Brien, who was there to support her dear friend of many years, sitting quietly with admiration, as Rose Marie signed autographs.

Miss O’Brien appeared at Lyons in January and wanted her fans to know this appearance will be different than the last one. “We are a small intimate venue and were unable to accommodate all of the calls for reservations,” said producer David Christopher. “Miss O’Brien agreed to make another appearance at the beginning of the new season with more stories and memories of her illustrious Hollywood career.” Born on January 15, 1937, Angela Maxine O’Brien, was destine to follow in the footsteps of her show business parents. Her father Lawrence O’Brien was a circus perform, who died before she was born. Her mother, Gladys Flores, a wellknown Flamenco dancer of that time, who performed with her sister, Marissa. Recognizing her daughter’s talent, she

had the little one working as a model at three years old. O’Brien made her first appearance in “Babes on Broadway” in 1941 at the age of four. When she was the ripe age of five, she changed her name to Margaret after acting in “Journey For Margaret” where she was praised for her acting abilities. She was considered a big star at the age of six, with a cameo appearance in the all-military show finale of “Thousands Cheer” topping it all off with her most memorable role as Tootie in “Meet Me In St. Louis” starring Judy Garland. It was in this movie, O’Brien added singing and dancing to her achievements and was rewarded with an Academy Juvenile Award the following year as the “Outstanding Child Actress of 1944.” If you research Margaret O’Brien on the internet, you’ll find so much fascinating information about her, as well as, a complete Filmography. One of the most interesting was the story about her stolen Oscar. Mourning the death of her mother when she was only 17, material things weren’t important. Several months later and realizing her Oscar was stolen, only added to her loss. Although O’Brien was offered a copy of the award by the Academy, she refused with hopes of finding the original one. She searched for it by attending memorabilia shows and antique shops; never giving up the hope of one day recovering it. She continued with her career and

married her first husband, Harold Allen, Jr. in 1959. The marriage ended in divorce almost 10 years later. She married her second husband, Roy Thorsen in 1974 and they have one daughter, Mara Tolene Thorsen, who was born in 1977. While attending a flea market, memorabilia collectors, Steve Neimand and Mark Nash saw a small Oscar with Margaret O’Brien’s name on it. They bought it and later had it photographed for an upcoming auction catalogue. By the Grace of God, the executive director of the Academy at that time, Bruce Davis, happened to see the statuette in the catalogue and through a mutual friend, contacted O‘Brien with the surprising news. On February 7, 1995, the Academy held a special ceremony in Beverly Hills to return the stolen award. Upon being reunited with her award, the always gracious and beautiful Margaret O’Brien told the attending journalists, “For all those who have lost or misplaced something that was dear to them, as I have, never give up the dream of searching. Never let go of the hope that you’ll find it, because after all these many years, at last, my Oscar has been returned to me.” Now that is a great ending to only one of the hundreds of stories she has to tell. So make your reservations because seating is limited. You won’t want to miss meeting this movie legend.

Potty Training is Possible!

y dog, Scarlett O’Hara, was rescued from an animal hoarder in Hemet who kept 135 dogs and 35 cats in a small house. Unable to imagine the neglect these animals experienced, I named her after a famous fictional survivor. However, the process of potty training Scarlett proved to be a serious challenge as these animals relieved themselves almost exclusively inside the house, shocking as it sounds. For awhile, Scarlett and I were homebound with only limited visits to friends and family. Scarlett seemed to pick the most exclusive spots to go, including the doorway of Between the Sheets, an expensive El Paseo shop. One day I happily realized, “It’s been a month with no accidents!” Luckily, most dogs

are easier than Scarlett to house train. If you adopt an adult dog from a shelter or rescue, often they are already house trained. However, if they have been confined to a concrete kennel for any length of time, they may require a “refresher” potty training session. Young puppies under 6 months of age need to relieve themselves more frequently...they are physically unable to “hold it” for long periods. A good supply of puppy pads may be helpful at this stage. “Paper training” on newspaper is a more inexpensive solution. Puppies normally need to eliminate just after eating and just after waking up from a nap, so this is the time to get them outside pronto. DOGGY DOORS - The ideal situation is a doggy door that provides easy access to a fenced in back yard. Call your puppy enthusiastically and use treats to tempt him through the opening while holding up the doggy door flap. If you have a dog already, he is the best teacher to show the new arrival the proper procedure to go in and out of the door. Dogs are pack animals and will follow the example set by the others. A small plot of artificial grass can do the trick if you have a cement patio or balcony. SCHEDULED WALKS - The challenge comes when you live in an apartment or condo without a fenced in yard. The challenge is greater for Coachella Valley residents on hot summer days when the dog walks feel like the death march of Bataan. Initially at least, try to keep to a

set schedule. I walk my dogs 4 times a day, including first thing in the morning and the last thing before bedtime. A young puppy may need to be walked every couple hours. Make it fun by exploring different areas and include community dog parks for increased exercise. Encourage your pet to eliminate in the same area outside. “Go potty” and “go poop” will become part of your training vocabulary, and your dog will learn to associate these words with appropriate action. When the dog pees or poops outside, make a big fuss of him with praise and petting. ACCIDENTS - When you catch your pup in the act of going to the bathroom in the wrong place, use a firm voice “No, don’t pee there”. Immediately take him to the newspaper or outside where he is supposed to eliminate. If you become angry or punish him, he will only learn to sneak off and go where you can’t see him. If you find the mess after he’s already gone, pick up the poop with a tissue, put the dog on a leash and head outside, putting it in the spot where he should go. Praise not punishment is the key to success. NATURE’S MIRACLE - This handy product in a white spray bottle with red lettering saves the day and the carpet. It contains enzymes that eliminate pet stains and odors, and this is important to discourage the pet from going in the same area again. For massive cleanups, use a mixture of white vinegar and water with 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar.

CRATE TRAINING - My research showed there is still some controversy over the use of crating dogs for potty training and other purposes. A future article will examine crate training in more detail. In any case, an animal should not be crated for longer than 4 or 5 hours. MORE TIPS - Get an expandable “baby gate” available at Home Depot or PetSmart, and block the dog off in the tiled kitchen or bathroom area. This works well for those occasions when you leave the house for an extended time. The animal can see out and does not feel so confined. Usually the dog won’t relieve himself in a small room, thinking of the area as his “den”. Dogs are naturally denning animals. If he should have an accident, it will be on the tile and easily mopped up. Another idea is to put an untrained dog on a long leash and hook the leash handle under a heavy coffee table or dining room table. The dog will feel like he’s still part of the family, but won’t go potty within the confined area. For challenging cases, the umbilical method where you keep the dog on a harness and lead attached to your waist may work. What if you’re going to visit fastidious Aunt Mary who has white carpet and no patience if Benji has an accident? For those occasions, you can get a “male wrap”, a cloth garment with Velcro and place a pad inside for extra absorbency. Male wraps and diapers for female dogs are available in various sizes at PetCo and PetSmart. Be patient and diligent and success will come. ow how many of us back in the day, when we went into a mom & pop family Italian restaurant, saw all of those Chianti bottles strapped in straw strewn about and atop red-checked tablecloths? They looked great and had that authentic and romantic Italian old-world look. Then we ordered a bottle only to find the juice as sour as can be! Was it a “bad” bottle or what!—who drinks this stuff? We panicked, we didn’t let it breathe or wait for the meal to come—as we should have because it was the definitive “food” wine where its acidity could cut through any red pasta sauce and heavy meat dishes. Of course that would have been true had we the real Chianti, but most likely, we didn’t. The straw wrapped bottle was called a

“fiasco” in Italian. Yes—that’s where we get the term when “things get in a mess”. If you made a mistake weaving those wicker baskets, all the straw blew apart and you had a mess on your hand. These “flasks” sold like wildfire here in the 1970’s as cheap decorations but unfortunately the wine was cheap as well. So all this poorly made, cheap tasting Chianti wine, thin, astringent and painful to drink had a bad taste in everybody’s mind for a long time. Of course, these bad wines were sold as being true Chianti and very nearly destroyed Chianti’s reputation! When I attended the L.A. Viva Vino Italian Wine Festival this last June, even the Italian wine marketers said “Chianti in America is Dead”! Geez! Why so solemn? Hey! I’m a Christian and I believe in the Resurrection, and, I’m a wine lover too and I believe in the resurrection of Chianti. Granted—it took dedication, strict quality controls, and decades for Chianti to regain its international respect. But baby—it’s back! Big time! The wine center of Italy is Toscana—Tuscany. And the predominant grape in the area, and in true Chianti red wine, is Sangiovese. The name derives from the Latin meaning “the blood of Jove (Jupiter)”, thus, this wine can be strong and bold with typical flavors of cherry, plum, strawberry, spice, almonds, tobacco, tea-leaf, vanilla, and coffee. Sangiovese is known for its high acidity and that keeps the wine refreshing. Chianti goes great with well-seasoned foods, but, is still often called a “fruity” wine, meaning it appeals to new wine drinkers. So how many of you “new” wine drinkers have tried it? A bunch of us wine enthusiasts for sure have enjoyed the Sangiovese Grosso grape which makes the world class wine of Brunello di Montacino, which certainly is the high-end Sangiovese—at high-end prices! But all us can agree that a good regular Chianti at ten bucks or less is a buy! Truth be told, for as many wine lovers who enjoy Chianti for its distinct aromas and flavor profile, there are many other wine lovers that are not that crazy about

the wine. Chianti definitely gives you an old world “terroir” or “earth” in the mix. It tastes like a European wine, not a Californian. I’ve mentioned my son Paolo, who’s in his early thirties, loves wine and has an extensive wine collection that ranges around the world. But Chianti is not a wine that he’ll think about for tonight’s dinner. Chianti is made all over the dry craggy hills outside of Florence in a timeless, ruggedly beautiful land where the cypresses stand tall against the cobalt sky as they must have 3,000 years ago when wine was first made in this part of the world. This wine with its rustic charms is unique. It’s a lipsmacking medium-bodied wine whose bright acidity and austere tannins is ideal to wash down a tasty Italian meal. The fuller Chianti Classico, and their Riservas, and Brunello can more be seen as the wines of winter and we’ll have fun with them as we bundle down. But for now, CV Weekly’s Wine of the Week is the 2011 Gabbiano Chianti that is selling for less than $8 a bottle at Pavillions/ Vons, Rancho Mirage & Palm Springs, and at Ralphs Market in Palm Desert. The winemaker’ notes: “The bouquet is reminiscent of ripe plums spiced with pepper and wood nuances. The first sip reveals invigorating flavors of sour cherry,

blackberry, and spice followed by a dry vivid finish. This Chianti is bold enough to complement rich and spicy pasta dishes, and is also perfect with tangy chicken or gourmet pizza.” The “secret” to really enjoy this 2011 Gabbiano is to decant the wine for around two hours before the meal. This is a very young red wine that will absolutely blossom a greater scent and much fuller flavors as it aerates in the decanter. This is one of the best exposures to a tasty Chianti for the price! the glass or by the bottle, giving us many great wines to choose from. Our server, Leigh, maintained a steady pace as she provided miniature tastings that tickled our palates between courses. Our next taste was a small “arancini”. Traditionally made with risotto, this bitesized tasting was made with cauliflower and Reggiano parmesan cheese custard, breaded and served with a smoked paprika yogurt sauce. After one bite, you will be begging for more! We had finally placed our order as another tasting would arrive; miso-glazed pork belly on a bed of cous cous with pickled apple and carrot, topped with caramel foam. Our first course would arrive shortly after. A corn and leek bisque with a crab fritter was presented before me and the soup was poured from a carafe, tableside. My guest enjoyed crab cakes full of flavor. The ingredients are clearly fresh and the presentations are artistic and unique. After our starters, we received more tastings, including a mini lemon-basil parfait push pop to refresh, or cleanse our palates. Incredible! We were so excited for our main course and had no idea what to expect. While I ordered the Wild Boar Chop with a butternut squash puree and a cherry, red wine reduction, my friend ordered the large Scallops, seared and served with a white wine and shallot reduction with grapefruit and crispy leeks, served on a bed

of cous cous and garnished with asparagus and an avocado mousse. The entrees are beautifully plated, only to be outdone by their intense flavors! Other favorites on the menu include Coq au Vin (like you’ve never seen before) and a most tender Beef Tenderloin. The complimentary tastings did not stop at the entrée. We enjoyed dessert tastings like “liquid caramel popcorn” and “carrot macaroons”. I had to order a couple desserts to see more of this chef’s talent and we were not disappointed. A Root Beer Semifreddo with Cake “fries” and pomegranate and mixed berry coulis for the “ketchup” was a great interpretation of a trip to the soda fountain for a root beer float and fries! Chef Joane Garcia-Colson has taken classic flavors and completely deconstructed them, only to reinterpret them into a work of art, not only for your eyes but for your taste buds as well! ribe-O, a musically articulate and talented band of seven, delivers a pronounced reggae sound masterfully blended with roots, dancehall, jazz and pop flavors, that offers more than music to move to, but a message to live by. Tribe-O consists of Siah “S1” Nix, lead vocalist and percussion; Ann “Lady Law” Nix, lead and background vocals; Andre “Young Rooster” Brown, drums, percussion and saxophone; Mike Gardner “Mike G!” on bass; Ivan C. “Dread I” on lead keyboards, background vocals and melodica; Rick Rodriguez “Ricksterfari” on lead guitar; and Danny Cedona on keyboards. The sweet vocals of Ann “Lady Law” Nix and Ivan C. “Dread I” bring an almost contemporary pop influence that combined with the deep rustic, song-speak style of lead singer Siah “S1” Nix, creates a unique and intriguing mix that is instantly likeable and truly fresh whether you are a reggae

regular or visitor. The fusion of these individual players from varied backgrounds and influences provides a constant flux of genre influences over the undeniable upbeat, reggae foundation and consistently treats the listener to music that dances on the ears and senses, making it easy to listen to over and over. It is virtually impossible to not be infused with the positive vibe that is their mission to deliver. Tribe-O hopes to cross international borders much as the music of the late, great and hugely influential Bob Marley who reached beyond the borders of Jamaica with more than a musical genre, but with an affirmative, spiritual “One Love” ideal of living. “Unity through music” is TribeO’s mission. “We believe the positive outweighs the negative! The way to the heart is love and the way to the soul is peace.” Tribe-O songs speak to joy and pain, human struggles, racism, equal rights, and

many other social issues of today. Tribe-O hopes their music will enlighten the youth of today and “take the wool from their eyes” with songs like Snakes in the Grass wherein they warn, “Beware of da snakes, dem lie in wait! Da path you take is the life you make.” What may appear as lofty ideals to some is a way of life to the members of this band. “What you see on stage is what you get,” states Siah, who currently works as the director of the Boys and Girls Club here in the Coachella Valley. As you listen to their music, it becomes obvious that this is not a band that plays reggae music. This is a band that IS reggae music. Tribe-O has had the great honor to play alongside reggae legend, Gregory Isaacs several times including Isaacs last appearance here in the desert three months prior to his death. Siah describes the reggae icon as a “humble, great man who was down to earth and touchable, who loved to laugh and talk with people.” Siah

Ming Bob Productions Presents Rock and Roll in Epic Proportions with Duff McKagan’s Loaded Date Shed, Wednesday, October 17 @ 9 pm

uff McKagan, known predominantly to the world of Rock and Roll fans as the bass player for Guns and Roses has long become his own man in this ever changing music industry, and it shows with his band Loaded and their new release Taken. Taken is an album best described in Loaded’s own words as a dark album with “earthy ground and pound” and an “undeniable streak of platinum level hookery and crookery” that took Duff to the very top of the Rock and Roll industry. With over two decades in an atmosphere known for severed friendships, band break ups and feuds, Duff has managed to maintain an incredible rapport with past and current collaborators with whom he’s consistently working with on various projects. He was on a Seattle radio show with Nikki Sixx (former bassist for Motley Crue) just last week complaining in unison about audiences missing the shared moment of a concert when they stare through an iPhone

or iPad recording the moment instead of being in it. And just recently, he was in the studio recording with Mike McCreedy and Barret Martin of Seattle’s rock super group, Mad Season. One of his most unique and tight ongoing relationships is with guitar phenom, Slash, whom he befriended just prior to the evolution of events that brought Guns and Roses into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame status. “There’s something about it,” Duff says regarding his relationship with Slash. “We can NOT play together for years, then come back and play together, and it’s just like an old pair of gloves. He challenges me. He’s taught me a lot musically. He was always that gifted musician, not that he sat and taught me how to play chords or anything, but I learned a lot just by watching him play and watching his work ethic. There are some of them that are more attached than the rest of us musically. It’s just easier and it just comes to them. You learn a lot just being around that. We have a real push and

each other. Ours is mostly funny and the album is dark, but you need dark and light in your life. I live with 3 women and it gets so I can’t have pink and fluffy all the time. pull relationship that seems to work great together. I played with his band in Seattle a couple months ago and suddenly, it was just a different thing when he and I were on stage. I can’t really explain it but, it’s cool.” That is very much how Duff explains how he and Slash first found themselves in a room with the other members of Guns and Roses. “I’ve tried to write that into my book and make it more poetic or even give myself more insight, but all I can really say about it is wrapped up in three words: everything just clicked. It felt right and you could just tell.” 25 years removed from those early beginnings, Duff, now a seasoned musician, performer and song writer has learned to “click” and to play to other people’s strengths making him a huge asset to any collaboration. Having come face to face with a decision at 30 to find sobriety or die, Duff, chose sobriety. With that he had to get very honest with himself and everyone else, mending all the fences he could. That honesty and humility has brought him full circle to enjoy a rich life of music and love. Now, married and the father to two daughters, Duff has traveled excessively with his band Loaded, mostly overseas. “Loaded is a band that hasn’t played the states a lot. We’ve never played Indio.” says Duff. “I don’t think I’ve ever played Palm Springs or Indio. Cool little music scenes start up out in places like that.” In regard to his band, Loaded, Duff says, “The band sounding unique and different (on the album Taken) is a product of the different players and surroundings coming together in the little society that we’ve built around

In the wake of these releases, a lot of renewed attention has been focused on Aldrich (1918 – 1983), who was born into wealth but never the less raged against the system with cynical, anarchic and disturbing films that eviscerated pomposity, hypocrisy, politic and even Hollywood. The visceral power of his movies has not much dimmed, and, in some cases, is more relevant and immediate than when they were first released.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?

It doesn’t really matter if you look at it as pure camp or psychological horror, everyone agrees that mature stars Bette Davis and Joan Crawford electrify in every scene they share. The legendary divas offscreen dislike for each other makes their acid chemistry on screen palpable and catalytic. Fifty years has not jaded the pleasure of the iconic performances in this perfect genre film one iota. Baby Jane Hudson was a child star of vaudeville. But as an adult, she was overshadowed by her more talented sister Blanche, who became a movie star. In the 1930s, a crippling accident ends Blanche’s promising career. A drunken, jealous Jane is blamed. Jump ahead

about 30 years and the two sisters share a decaying Los Angeles mansion. Jane, in chalky make-up plans her showbiz comeback and tortures Blanche, her invalid sister. Blanches knows her days and tries to escape, but the deranged Jane has cut off all exits. Lukas Heller’s atmospheric screenplay is based on Henry Farrell’s novel. Bette Davis was nominated for an Oscar©, but it was only Joan Crawford who appeared on stage at the ceremonies. She had previously arranged to accept for the eventual winner, Ann Bancroft. 1962. HUSH...HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE

1948 British film NO ORCHIDS FOR MISS BLANDISH that was in turn adapted from the once banned-as-pornographic novel of the same name. It’s the 1920s. Kim Darby plays young heiress Barbara Blandish who is kidnaped by the brutal Grissom gang. Their plan is simple and savage: keep the ransom and kill the hostage. Unfortunately for the gang, dimwit Slim Grissom (Scott Wilson) falls in love with Barbara. And the even more unfortunate Barbara is forced into a relationship -- as the poster says -- of “violence and desire.” Finally, when the police close in and the gang comes apart, the question becomes: Who will survive the final frenzy of love and bullets? Tony Musante, Ralph Waite, Robert Lansing and Connie Stevens co-star in this still shocking and vicious gangster thriller. The unsettling screenplay is by Leon Griffiths and the very 70’s score is by Gerald Fried. Those who knew director Aldrich say his film was intended as a black comedy and is a reflection of his bizarre, almost sadistic, sense of humor. Commenting on the film, Aldrich once said: “If you laugh or cringe -- or both – it’s much more about who you are than what’s on screen.” Many people assume THE GRISSOM GANG was somehow inspired by Patty Hearst’s infamous kidnapping by the SLA, but it was in fact made three years earlier. 1971. A great follow-up to the success of Aldrich’s WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?, this gothic horror again stars a demented Bette Davis as Charlotte, a longfaded Southern debutante who witnessed the murder and dismemberment of her fiancé and then the suicide of the killer – her own father! Years pass, a clearly unwell Charlotte is a recluse in her moldy mansion, cared for by slovenly housekeeper (Agnes Moorehead). But when her decayed mansion is set for demolition, Charlotte fears her fiancé’s body parts will be uncovered, thus confirming her father as a murderer. Desperate, she summons her apparently mild-mannered cousin Miriam (Olivia De Havilland) to help her save the house. Miriam brings a doctor (Joseph Cotten) to calm Charlotte’s nerves. Soon Charlotte is haunted by horrific visions of the old homicide and suicide. Has she gone totally bonkers? It’s not long before we learn what’s really going on. Director Aldrich originally set Joan Crawford for the role of Miriam, hoping to reunite the two battling stars with their visceral on-screen chemistry, but Crawford’s unexpected illness forced a recasting. Davis suggested De Havilland, her best friend. 1964. Warner. Blu-ray.

This socio-political thriller is way ahead of its time. I can’t imagine Aldrich’s taught military conspiracy cautionary tale being made today. Burt Lancaster is Lawrence Dell, an embittered, unhinged, but decorated Air Force Colonel who escapes a military prison and with help of three other convicts takes over a nuclear base and holds America hostage. Among the ransom demands is a full revelation of a document that reveals why we invaded Viet Nam! Just imagine a film that does the same with President Bush and questions about our invasion of Iraq and who profited! This fully restored director’s cut was re-mastered by the Bavaria Film Studios and will be available next month from Olive films. The fine cast includes Richard Widmark, Joseph Cotten, Melvyn Douglas and Charles Durning as the President. Loosely based on Walter Wager’s novel “Viper Three.” 1977. Olive Films. Blu-ray.

This lurid, sometimes heavy-handed, lesbian melodrama received an X rating upon its initial release. Based on the play

of the same name by Frank Marcus, it’s about an alcoholic soap opera star (Beryl Reid) that dotes on her younger lover, Alice (Susannah York). But when TV exec Mercy Croft (Coral Browne) falls for Alice and plans the killing of June’s character from the soap, a frightened June, in a crazed alcoholic fog struggles to hold on to her lover, life, livelihood and sanity. I’ve witnessed a similar scenario played out in “Hollywood” on more than one occasion. I think Aldrich relished skewering what he saw as a rancid behavior in the TV and movie biz (not the lesbianism) where vultures feed on the vulnerable. If there are any lingering doubts about Aldrich’s feelings about “the industry,” check out his decidedly odd and acerbic THE LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE. 1968. Anchor Bay. DVD.

THE EMPEROR OF THE NORTH

This testosterone-fueled, hyper-violent, gritty, depression-era suspense film stars Lee Marvin as “A No. 1,” the King of the Hoboes. He’s famous for catching a ride on any train he wishes no matter the risk. Keith Carradine is Cigarette, a sort of self-made understudy of A No.1 who brags that one day he will surpass the fame of his mentor. The one huge obstacle that looms is the sadistic Shack (Ernest Borgnine), a guard who is known to beat to death any who dare take a free ride on his train. Naturally, A No. 1 and Cigarette hop aboard Shack’s train for an extended showdown that does not disappoint. An instant cult favorite for many who’ve seen it, this film really delivers for Aldrich, Borgnine and Marvin fans. Beautiful locations, a fine supporting cast (including Charles Tyner, Simon Oakland, Elisha Cook Jr., and Sid Haig), great moving train footage (cinematography by Joseph F. Biroc) adds immensely to the verisimilitude of the doings. 1973. 20th Century Fox. Preparing ahead and planning for Safety during this night is very important and should be your top priority. There are so many safety factors to consider says DiGiovanna from costume, home, driving, candy safety and more. Make sure you contact your local fire or police department for additional safety information!

Clear your front porch of unnecessary clutter. That garden hose, albeit a great snake, could cause a fall and best belongs in the back yard. Bicycles and scooters, as well, are best kept in the garage for this night. Lawn decorations are fine as long as they are well lit and away from the walkway where small children could bump and fall. (Fear makes us run and if you are going after the fear factor, wonderful, but please, does not risk an injury claim.)

Are all your exterior light bulbs working? Check and replace any that need replacing. Sweep steps and sidewalks to make sure they are free of debris. A rock under a pile of wet leaves could scrape a little knee. Have over anxious pets, ready to protect you from all the witches, cats, mice, and other night creatures this Halloween? While that is an exceptional quality in a guard dog, it would be best if your animal were restrained this night to prevent jumps, scares, scratches and bites.

If a trick or treater is under the age of twelve, determine which adult or older youth will be accompanying the child (ren) on their candy jaunt. Pumpkins are more than a decorative ornament as they are a good source of low calorie nutrition and chocked full of the vitamins A, C, E, K, beta-carotene and potassium. Vitamin K helps our blood to clot and to keep our bones strong. Beta-carotene helps in the prevention of some cancers while another carotenoid called beta-cryptoxanthin is believed to help smokers avoid lung cancer. Potassium helps fight high blood pressure. In addition to a pumpkin’s nutritional value, a pumpkin has no fat or cholesterol and the seeds provide some relief to arthritis sufferers. The Greeks originally named what we called the pumpkin today, a pepon which translates to large melon. Over the years, the name morphed to what we know today. In America, some of the first sustainable gardening occurred with the

“Three Sisters” of squash, corn and beans. As described at www.allaboutpumpkins. com, the corn served as the trellis to the beans while the squash or pumpkin served to stabilize corn roots while providing shade to the ground as a way to retain soil moisture. The pumpkin helped at preventing weeds while the bean roots provided nitrogen to the soil. There are two basic types of pumpkins, sweet and dry. Sweet pumpkins are best in pies and breads while dry are better in soups. When buying a pumpkin to eat, typically look toward smaller pumpkins as the pulp is less stringy. Scoop out the insides and separate the seeds from the pulp. You can then spread the seeds out to dry overnight before lightly roasting them on a cookie sheet in the oven for about fifteen minutes. A Trust is a fiduciary relationship with respect to property in which one person is the holder of the legal title to property, subject to an equitable title in another. “I own Black Acre. I give it to you or even myself, as Trustee, to do with as I direct; and when I die, I give it to my son in Encino, and if he does not survive me, then to his children in equal shares.” You may be your own Trustee, but you should name a Successor Trustee to act upon your death or if you are incapacitated; and that Successor will manage and distribute the assets in your Trust. You may give the Trustee specific instructions about how you want to manage the Trust or allow the Trustee to have broad discretion; and you may put any of your assets into the Trust, or you may put some of them into the Trust and not others. You can also retain almost complete control over your assets. You may make the Trust revocable, so that you can change it, or cancel it, at any time during your lifetime. You can always change that Trustee during your lifetime, but remember that the Trust is only a piece of paper. It is only as good as that which you put into it. If you transfer nothing into the Trust, it is simply a shell and has no force and effect. It is then important that you arrange for the transfer of assets into a Trust and that is not an easy simple matter.

Pros and Cons of a Trust:

When you sign a Trust Agreement, you are turning over legal title, or ownership, of the funds, stocks or other property to this other person or institution. You, as the person who sets up the Trust, are “the Trustor” or “the Settlor”. The person or institution that holds title to your Trust is “the Trustee”. You may be your own “Trustee”, but you must make arrangements for a Successor when you can no longer be the Trustee. You, as Trustor, instruct the Trustee what he or she may or may not do with those funds or property. For instance, the Trustee cannot use the property for his own benefit. You should also know the negatives of creating a Trust. It is a bit cumbersome. You should hire an attorney to do it properly. The transfer of the assets to the Trust must carefully be attended to; and the Trust is its own tax-paying entity, so there are some minor accounting procedures that have to take place. A major advantage; however, is the Probate avoidance scheme and that may be worth considering a Trust in itself. Should you have a Trust, and if so, what kind of Trust?

The answer to that depends on what you want Estate Planning to do for you. There are many kinds of Trusts, but they are either “Living Trusts” or “Testamentary” Trusts. A “Living Trust”, also known as an “Intervivos Trust” operates during your lifetime. One of the reasons for this may be because you want to travel and you want a professional to manage your investments if you don’t have the time or expertise to do so. It could be because you are senile or disabled and you need some help in that direction. A “Living Trust” also lets you make your own decisions about the kind of “old age care” that you want. If you don’t make such arrangements, then a court may have to decide what kind of care you will have and who will manage your assets. Needless to say, once you have transferred your assets to a Trust and instructed the Trustee how to disburse them after your death, there is no longer a need for a Probate. A good professional; however, will suggest that you have what we call a “Pour Over Will”. That is utilized because people often forget to transfer assets into the Trust. A “Living Trust” can also be part of your overall Estate Plan and, of course, it is confidential. Only you, your Trustees, your lawyer and the Beneficiaries know the amount your Trust is worth and how the income is used and the names of the Beneficiaries. The important thing is that it allows you to avoid a Probate, which is a public proceeding.

By Creating a Trust:

A. You save the cost of Probate fees to the attorney and the Executor. B. You maintain privacy. Keep in mind that Probate files are public record that your neighbors can look up. C. You save the delay in probating an Estate, which takes a minimum of six months and often times a year or more if there are any unanticipated problems and, sometimes it takes even longer. In conclusion, should you have a Small Estate and wish everything to go to your surviving spouse, avoiding Probate by use of a commonly-used revocable living trust may be a wise choice. In light of changes to the Federal Estate Tax laws in the next several years, if your Estate is valued at $2,000,000.00 or over, you would be advised to combine a standard revocable living trust with other estate tax saving devices such as an irrevocable life insurance trust, a charitable trust or a family limited partnership to reduce estate taxes.

LIVING TRUST vs. WILLS

Both a Will and a Living Trust allow you to set the terms for the distribution of property after death. The differences between the two, however, can be quite significant and you should consider the following advantages and disadvantages: Living Trust Advantages: * A living trust is a cost-saving device: it allows one to avoid the expense and delay of probate proceedings, which can take up to three years to complete and can consume up to 10% of the value of your clients’ estate. * If you own property in another state, a living trust eliminates the need to probate that property in that state. * A living trust can immediately transfer management of your property if you become incapacitated, either physically or mentally. There is no need for you to go to court in order to appoint a guardian or conservator. * A living trust protects your privacy; it remains confidential and does not become a matter of public record. * You can name a trusted person to manage trust property for young beneficiaries. * When the time comes to distribute your assets, there will often be no need for the family to hire a legal professional to distribute the assets held in the trust. Disadvantages: * Setting up a trust requires quite a bit of initial paperwork and can be expensive. * Setting up a trust also requires you to transfer ownership of all the property intended to be placed in the trust. In the case of real estate, this will require quitclaim deeds.

* You may run into some difficulty in the event you wish to refinance property held by the living trust. * You cannot designate a guardian for any minor children in a living trust (but this may be done easily in a will that supplements the trust). Will Advantages: * Setting up a will is more simple and less expensive than setting up a living trust. * Creditors face a final cut-off date for bringing claims against your estate. * You may name a guardian for minor children in a will. * You need not transfer your property to another entity in order to create a valid will. Disadvantages: * Upon probate, a will becomes a matter of public record. * While you may appoint whomever you wish to act as executor of your will, it is usually the probate lawyers who control the actual distribution of property. This can be expensive. * Probate, which is necessary for the implementation of your will can be both costly and time-consuming. * A will does not provide for the transfer of management of your assets or property if you should become physically or mentally incapacitated. Most living trusts include a Pour-Over Will which is a document designed to distribute any property that is not included in the trust. Go Ahead, Beauty is Pamper Yourself defined by the Miriam B

eauty is defined by the MiriamWebster as the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. When we think in terms of this definition, we must break down and examine each word within the definition of beauty. When we think in terms of each of our senses experiencing pleasure, we must consider not only the things that are visually pleasing, but also those things which are pleasing to the touch, taste, smell and hearing. And furthermore, these sensations we experience must exalt us, or lift up our spirit, and make us feel good. What makes us feel good varies considerably from one individual from another. Generally when one listens to soothing or uplifting music he or she will experience pleasure, which is a thing of beauty. To touch a luxurious fabric or pet a soft animal, or even feel hot stones against the skin is another way to experience beauty. The pleasure in the sensation as well as the personal connection formed when touching and experiencing joy is certainly a thing of beauty. And taking pleasure in tasting something delectable is, most foodies will agree, a most beautiful thing. What is most fascinating about the definition of beauty is that experiencing it should make one feel exalted. Beauty should bring a feeling of peace, joy, love,

contentment or pleasure. And since we all want to experience pleasurable things, we can easily search out simple ways to experience at least one beautiful thing each day. Imagine if you were able to visit an art gallery every day to look at your favorite masterpiece, walk through a flower garden, or listen to a symphony. While we might not be able to have profound experiences every day, if we look at the everyday events in a new light we may find the magic and beauty in the simplest of things such as holding a child’s hand, hearing the birds sing at sunrise, or watching the desert flowers bloom. Beauty feeds the soul. It serves as inspiration. And beauty is everywhere and in everything. Clearly we aren’t discussing traditional concepts of aesthetic beauty, the kind that requires symmetry and standards of comparison. We are talking about beauty that is personal and changes with each unique perspective; the good ole beauty is in the eye of the beholder type of beauty. Since what individuals find beautiful can vary greatly, one could even go so far to say there is no limit to the amount of beauty in the world. So don’t go another day without experiencing and appreciating something beautiful. You can find beauty in the most simple things, from a fallen leaf to a random act of kindness. Don’t strive to just have a good day, have a beautiful day. After all, it’s whatever you say it is. You are the one who makes it beautiful.

Partaking in an activity for yourself can be as simple as sipping a cup of coffee alone or taking a trip. Naturally we must be conservative in our judgment and not overindulge. Moderation is key. A trip into the wilderness can help you relax and commune with nature. (5) Take in a movie at home or the theater. Sometimes we just need a break from reality. Suggestion: Watch a movie or program that makes you smile. Keep clear from anything negative. (6) Take up a new or previous hobby. Commit to enjoying your hobby at least 3-5 hours a month. (7) Journaling can set your mind at ease and bring clarity. When we see our thoughts on paper our dreams/goals can become a reality. (8) Enjoy the outdoors. Pack your lunch and enjoy under a tree. (9) Play chef. Cook up a long awaited dish you have been craving. (10) Purchase a bouquet of flowers for yourself. The beauty and aroma while working at your desk can be sensuous. Keep in mind you are not being selfish by pampering yourself every so often. Better yet you are keeping life into perspective.
