Gram Rabbit

I

f you have yet to hear the creatively rich, innovative, unique, genre coalition of musical integrity that is Gram Rabbit, then drop what you’re doing and make amends immediately. This band, fronted by the beautiful Jesika Von Rabbit, and co-founded with the genius of Todd Rutherford, is what happens when two creative forces come crashing together and explode into something bigger and brighter than the very thing that groomed them individually. It happens rarely, and sometimes it is not recognized by the masses as it should be, but it is pure magic. Jesika grew up loving music, influenced by her musical mother and classical piano lessons. She was always drawn to the sounds that elevated above the norm, and as a child of the 80’s, there were plenty to choose from. Meanwhile, Gram Rabbit’s Facebook profile touts influences by “miracles and metaphors, Jesus, the devil, the Brotherhood of the Source, the

desert, the Easter bunny, cowboys, aliens, the moon, whiskey, road kill, Christian crank, white magic, the ghosts in my old bedroom, the ghost in my new bedroom...” (the list goes on). It’s clear that Gram Rabbit, as a collective whole, draws on pretty much anything and everything that sits outside the tiny box of the mainstream. With a theatrical-indie-grunge sound that should have landed them the gig as Quentin Tarantino’s “house band” long ago, they have had huge success in the commercial industry with over 30 different song placements on television and film. The most recent of these successes being “Desperate Heart” featured on a Fruit of the Loom commercial that began airing during the Olympics, and “Lost in Place” in the movie Crazy, Stupid, Love. Jesika and Todd met in Joshua Tree after seeking a less metropolitan way of life, while still being able to make music; Jesika from LA and Todd from San Francisco. And as is

common in the sacred, creative macrocosm that is Joshua Tree, these two unique artists found each other and have been a force of musical nature for over a decade. Their style and name began its early formation while Jesika and Todd prepared for their first gig - an open mic dedicated to the memory of Gram Parsons. “I was surprised to find I had a country voice, as I sang Emmy Lou Harris and Gram Parsons songs. I never thought of myself singing country, but there I was and I really liked it,” stated Jesika. They had to come up with a name for themselves at the gig. Todd came up with “Gram” in honor of the artist they were covering and “Rabbit”

New Business Offers Farm-Fresh Produce Delivered to Your Door

W

ondering how you’ll get your fix of farm-fresh fruits and veggies this summer? Thanks to a new local business, you can get a box filled with farmers’ market goodies every week without ever leaving the comfort of your home. Ripe N’ This World, a produce delivery service, is the brainchild of Kaitlyn Ryan and Julie Velazquez, farmers’ market veterans who wanted to make the market’s offerings more accessible to people in the desert. “We wanted to start a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture),” said Kaitlyn Ryan. “Typically with a CSA, people come and pick up a box of produce at the market.” The women decided to launch their CSA in the summer as a delivery service, however, because the outdoor farmers’ markets move to an indoor, once-a-week Palm Springs location during the summer. “We have a really great crowd that comes to our Sunday and Wednesday markets who will not drive to Palm Springs (for the summer market),” Ryan said. “Summer is the hardest time for our farmer’s markets.” So, what comes in a box? “It’s an eclectic mix of what’s seasonal and what’s available at our markets,” Ryan said. “It’s what looks good, what looks ripe and what tastes the best.” The Deuce, the smallest box, is enough produce for 1-2 people for one week

4

and costs $45. Larger boxes and a juice box are available, and customers receive a 20% discount when ordering by the month. Boxes are personalized for each customer, taking into account allergies and dislikes. “We put allergies and dislikes into high consideration because we don’t want to promote any type of waste,” Ryan said. “If you don’t like tomatoes, tell me.” In addition to seasonal produce, customers can add other farmers’ market items to their delivery, including organic eggs, L’Artisan Bakery breads, local raw honey and almond milk. Boxes also include recipes that incorporate the week’s produce, as well as tips on how to store the items for maximum freshness. “We’re trying to show you that you can eat this, you can cook it and you can afford it,” Ryan said. For more information on Ripe N’ This World or to set up your delivery, call (760) 799-2315 or email jkripenthisworld@gmail. com.

Summer Certified Farmers’ Market

As the desert heats up, the Certified Farmers’ Market will move indoors to provide farm-fresh produce and local products all summer long. Beginning June 1, the Certified Farmers’ Market will move to the Pavilion in Palm Springs, an indoor and air-conditioned venue where more than 20 farmers and vendors will offer fresh fruits, vegetables, juices and locally produced products like olive oils and soaps every Saturday morning through September. The summer markets will also feature live entertainment, dance performances and chef demonstrations. The Palm Desert market finished for season on May 22; the last day for the regular Palm Springs and La Quinta markets are May 25 and 26, respectively. If you go: Summer Certified Farmers’ Market Palm Springs Pavilion 401 S. Pavilion Way, Palm Springs Saturdays, June 1st – September 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Comedy Film Nerds Raising the Entertainment Barometer at the AMFM Festival June 13-16

W

hat do you get when you combine two stand-up comedians who are also film makers who also “know people” in the industry and want to make oodles of money, or as they say, “Disney” money? NO! Not an online traffic school!!! You get Comedy Film Nerds - industry knowledge plugged into high voltage comedy giving you hilariously heady pod casts and blogs dissecting film as only Chris Mancini and Graham Elwood can deliver. For example, episode 159, Chris and Graham welcome comic and film actor, Rick Overton, into the Nerd HQ. They talk about the 100+ films that he has done. Graham and Chris tell why Gatsby had many problems despite the good acting. Then Rick goes into detail about which films he was allowed to improvise on and how Sean Connery would fight anyone. Intrigued? How about episode 156 Chris and Graham are all alone in the “gargoyle garage”! They have a long talk about Oblivion and what makes a good sci-fi film. Then they announce that the show is moving to the All Things Comedy network and how that is going to be good for all you fans. They go over some good DVD titles and discuss whether Graham will break his vow to never see a Michael Bay film because Pain & Gain has a funny trailer. The site also offers an array of short films that promise to be “worth your time”. They take on a more serious and professional tone as they explain, “Here, there are no user uploads (at least, not yet). These are films made by actual filmmakers, mostly even shot on film, not by someone in their basement with a DV camera. Not that there is

anything wrong with that, but there are other places for it. What we feel we offer has value and we feel artists should be compensated slightly for their work. That’s the philosophy here. So we’re offering the best short films for download. We offer a select few, ones we think are truly special. These are films you’ll want to keep and watch again. What makes you want to watch some movies but own others? Basically, you like the movies you own more. So that’s what we’re offering. Movies you’ll like more. Some are available elsewhere, and some are exclusive to this site. Either way, you’ll enjoy the best short films around without having to slog through a thousand videos of people being hit in the head with a shovel. We only have a few of those.” The website also delivers all sorts of things related to comedy and film such as articles, reviews, stand-up material and actual films. The team goes behind the scenes and in front of the camera to bring insights that no one else can give, because, as they like to remind us, they “know people”. CDs, DVDs, T-Shirts, and a plethora of downloads are available to

satiate any movie nerd appetite. You’ll get to know the people involved in the site, and there is a calendar to let you know when and where your favorite comedy film nerd will be performing near you. You can check out where they’ll be performing individually, when they’ll be doing MONTHLY COMEDY FILM NERDS LIVE! at the Hollywood Improv, as well as all the other special shows they’ll be doing all across the country. These brave souls have even provided message boards so you can let them and everyone else know what you think. A word of caution: I had a friend who thought he could heckle a stand-up comic once…yes, once. Fortunately for us here in the desert we will have the distinct opportunity to see these creative, entrepreneurial geniuses live as they will be toppling the entertainment barometer at the AMFM Festival with a reception and comedy show at Mary Pickford Theater.

Introducing.. Our new “Gamer Girl” Jennifer Tan (aka Mrs. Fett)

I

due to regular references to Jesika as the animated, Warner Brothers character as well as her love for the song “White Rabbit”. Despite the folksy origins, “A lot of our stuff isn’t really country,” Jesika explains. “I know I had a couple of acoustic driven songs on the first album; I don’t even know where they came from: “Dirty Horse” and “Devil’s Playground” ended up being a lot of people’s favorite songs. But we are also doing electronic stuff, some psychedelic pop and rock. Last summer we released Welcome to the Country, a psychedelic and cosmic American collection, because I had a group of songs that was dedicated to that sound. Some people were wondering ‘Are they going country?’ We just don’t like to put limitations on what we do. We have all kinds of different songs. We feel like there are no rules to our music, and we will get it out there when we feel like it’s necessary to do so.” And that, my friends, is how you create music with integrity; you learn the rules so you can break them eloquently. I asked Jesika, what has been her favorite part of her career thus far. She answered quickly, “Every time I write a song, I feel like, ‘Oh, I love this!’ Months later it can turn into, ‘Well, maybe it’s not so great’, but initially, there’s this really cool high.” She

6

also shared that the magic truly happens for Gram Rabbit any time they play in front of a live crowd that feeds on their music and they can feed on the crowd’s energy, causing them to perform at their best. “Hearing yourself on television is pretty cool too,” Jesika admits. “Living out here in the middle of nowhere, somewhat isolated, when I suddenly hear my voice on a Fruit of the Loom commercial or on a TV show, I’m like ‘Oh my God!’ I run around the house like a little kid and call my mom. It’s surreal because you’re on national television! Then the commercial or the show ends and you just kind of look around the house and say, ‘Well, I guess I better do the dishes now,’” she laughs. “The toughest part of the business,” I ask? She takes on a deeper more serious tone: “Continuing to believe in your product, feeling like you have the right team around you, and making the most of the opportunities. It’s really exciting making records, but if you don’t feel like anyone’s hearing them it can be very discouraging. These last couple of records, we didn’t have anyone helping us build press and momentum. You put all your heart and soul into something, and then end up feeling like it’s not getting the exposure it needs.

You have to tell yourself not to give up and say, ‘Well, let’s make another record.’ Believing and not throwing in the towel can be hard.” It’s in those times that Jesika leans on the words Brant Bjork of Kyuss told her. “He looked me straight in the eye and said, ‘Jesika, we’re lifers!’ It’s true! I keep reminding myself what he told me all the time. I love making music. This is my life. If I wasn’t doing music, I’d be miserable. For me, there’s no other choice. I will be doing this until I can’t get up on stage anymore. Sometimes it’ll strike out and other times it’ll be great. I just have to keep digging in and keep doing it.” Gram Rabbit will be showcased as the closing act at the AMFM Festival, Friday, June 14th in Cathedral City. They will be performing the newest songs from their album, Braised and Confused and are hoping to have the “Grundalinas”, the two blonde dancers featured in their fantastically produced video, “Final Clap Fever”. Do yourself a favor and see these legitimately original troubadours described by LA City Beat as, “Dry and tough as mule jerky, sexy as a swayed hip; the music weaves elements of electro-dance, Byrd’s-era country rock, inner-space jazz, and gnomic meditations in the manner of Spiritualized and Pink

Floyd into a sound that’s unaffectedly homey, profoundly ambitious, and frankly, revolutionary.” Following their June 30th booking at San Francisco’s huge Gay Pride event, the group will be returning to their musical domicile in Joshua Tree to construct a seventh album that promises to be as unpredictable, and creatively honest as the last six. One thing you can count on – it will be a collection built for the auditory delight of those of us who recognize creative integrity and talent when we hear it. guess you could say I grew up in the “technology era”, every year a new console or game came out. When I was 5, I would steal my older sisters Gameboy, and play Mario Bros. under my bed until my sister caught me. After enough games of hide and hope the batteries aren’t dead (which I learned was the only reason she would leave it out) my parents FINALLY bought me my own, red Gameboy, with Pokémon Red, and my own case, and an 8 pack of batteries! It was all gaming, all the time after that. I got the awesome Duck Hunt, and a Sega Genesis, with Sonic (Duh) and Beast Wars, Fighting games galore, and every console after that. My house became the weekend rumble pit, where all of my friends would

come over and duke it out on my mega 20” tv, complete with grilled cheeses and apple juice! When I was 16, my older sister introduced me to a group called “The Frag Dolls”. “Dude, this is SOOOO you! You little nerd,” said my sister, as she turned the screen of our HUGE computer monitor towards me. My first reaction was “WWWHHHAAATTTT!!!” My dream came true before my very eyes. I wasn’t alone, I wasn’t a freak, I was a girl gamer! It became my mission to excel at gaming, marketing, and everything I could do to stand out, and prove that female gamers exist, and are something to fear. I am not sure if it was the gaming, the social weekends, or the fact that I was a total ugly duckling when I was in my teens, but I became the social butterfly of the gaming world. Midnight launches, conventions, events, and competitions became holidays to me, and I still look forward to San Diego Comic-Con more than my own birthday! There is always something magical, about being consumed into a world otherwise just a computer screen. Cosplayers bring characters to life, game developers spend countless hours, and money, to create the environments you have fallen in love with in their game, and did I mention the LOOT! Everywhere you turn, someone has something AWESOME and exclusive, for your over- sized, and just as epic swag bag. My favorite part HAS to be the shopping, and camaraderie of fellow attendees. Everyone has a story, a passion, or an experience to share, and learn from. Strategies, and gamer tags are traded like Pokémon cards,

which are also literally being traded. No one is shunned, or judged. There are no fights, no cliques, no segregation. It’s just where I belonged. Today, I use my passion for gaming and socializing for more than just bragging rights. I host community game nights for amazing fundraisers like Autism Speaks, Cancer, Shelter from the storm, and local organizations that help at-risk teens. I also help organize midnight launches for local Game Stops, including live music, epic prizes from affiliates, sponsors, and local donors, like food and free gear for raffle prizes! I also attend and volunteer at as many major conventions and events across the country that I can and vlog with as many developers, gamers, cosplayers, and anyone else interesting, to get the latest in pop culture, gaming, technology, and entertainment! I have recently decided to step into the Esport league. I am a General

in the clan Enforcer-Gaming, and play in locally organized, and nationally ranked matches including, MLG. When I am not diving into the world of gaming, I split my time between my cupcake business, Viciously Delicious Cupcakes, my Etsy store, where I sell all of my awesome geeky creations and recipes, to help fund my crazy shenanigans, And my husband. Being married to another gamer has its awesome Co-Op advantages, but the stakes could never be higher. We are a team, on and off the screen. My life is an ever changing adventure, and I want to include the world in it! Every chapter of my upcoming gaming adventures will be shared in this CV Weekly column.

Microsoft Releases details of new console Xbox One M

icrosoft released details on their newest console Xbox One this week, in response to the wide range of competition in the gaming arena. With smart phones and tablets now competing for the same money that would be spent on a console, Microsoft merged the two seamlessly. Featuring an AMD 8 core CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, blu-ray player, wifi and 1080p HDMI pass through, the console has been deemed the “All-purpose cloud-based entertainment system for gaming, music, movies, and television.” The design of the new console itself is boxy and has been hailed the “nextgen VCR.” Key features of the new console include “Snapping” a feature that allows users to seamless flip between multiple apps open at once, using simple voice commands. HDMI pass through allows convenient switching between live television and gaming. The new Kinect 2.0 will be fitted with a 1080p HD RGB camera that works with Skype, 30

FPS in color, and will increase its field of view by 60%. Better body recognition, including fingers and a heartbeat sensor, will make fitness regimens using the Kinect much more interactive and enjoyable. The Kinect will also be a standard accessory packaged with every Xbox One Console Sold. The new Xbox One controllers will feature 40 design innovations, including new impulse triggers, a newly designed D-pad that is more cross-shaped, an integrated battery, and a Wi-Fi Direct Radio Stack. The new console will not be backwards compatible with xbox 360, or arcade titles! Xbox Live Vice President Marc Whitten commented, saying, “The system is based on a different core architecture, so backcompat doesn’t really work from that perspective.” Whitten also noted Microsoft will be continuing the sale of the 360 console along the new Xbox One. As a consolation, you will be able to carry your gamer score and gamertag to the new unit.

Microsoft plans on releasing 15 new titles within the first 12 months, 8 of which are new, including Forza 5, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin’s Creed 5 Black Flag, and an Xbox exclusive live action series based on Halo, with director Steven Spielberg. There are still many questions up in the

air, regarding an “always online” standard, a used game fee, and 360 controller compatibility that many are hoping will be answered at E3 in June. Needless to say, it will be my first stop!

Local Music Spotlight

Tiptoe Stallone C

hris Thomas is committed to his community and helping younger generations learn about team work, ethics and basketball skills through his Indio Warriors Youth Basketball program. In a way, Thomas is the mild-mannered philanthropist Bruce Wayne. While the Batman character is personified by Thomas’ alter-ego, hip-hop/rap artist Tiptoe Stallone. Thomas talks about his humble beginnings, “I was born and raised in Indio, CA in a single parent home by my mother in Mecca Vineyards where I resided for the first 16 years of my life. I started rapping when I was in 4th grade. At least I thought I was flowin’ then. I was really good at poetry and rhyming words together. Then one day I heard my older cousin Clarence Lynch Jr. rap and that began the birth of my favorite pastime.” Although much of hip hop music does not contain rapping, Thomas has been able to maintain the hip hop culture throughout the development of his songs. “I have different ways I come up with a song because in my head I’m really rapping all day long randomly thinking of concepts but

8

each day is different. Some days I let the beat determine the song and some days I write with no beat at all.” Thomas has an impressive list of locales and venues he has appeared at. “I’ve performed at the Riverside County Fairgrounds, numerous car shows, Plan B Entertainment and Cocktails, The Red Barn and several shows hosted by a local hip hop radio station. I have also performed at most of the nightclubs in the desert that allow rap music. I’ve done shows all over California as well as the U.S.” “In the future, I’m getting ready to drop this project called “EverybodyHatesChris Vol. 1” this June to kick off the summer. I’ll be throwing a local talent showcase called “Don’t You Know I’m Local” where artists have a platform to showcase their music during a performance.” Thomas’ soon to be released album Da Reality Show - Starring Tiptoe Stallone will anchor his record label, Indio Spot Entertainment, where he hopes to sign other musical artists and facilitate collaborations. Thomas also has a succession of shows in the coming months. Thomas credits his mother for providing

By noe gutierrez for him and instilling the confidence necessary to help others. “The Boys and Girls Club in Indio was my father. My mother raised me to love all people from every ethnic group. She was a waitress so she dealt with people from all walks of life and I learned that as well.” Thomas is just as passionate about helping others as he is about his music. He has taught basketball and life skills to children since 2007. “I’ve coached kids 6-17 years old in a non-profit basketball program called Indio Warriors Youth Basketball where we have travel teams compete against other elite youth basketball players around Southern California. I also volunteer in the city of La Quinta where I teach kids in the Coachella Valley in my Warriors free fundamental program for ages 6-17. The rewarding part of helping these young players is just giving them somewhere they can learn the game and teach teamwork. Showing up to their high school games and seeing them blossom from the hard work they put in is rewarding.” Thomas has several videos that he has shot around the Coachella Valley. He shares about this medium, “The visual aspect is becoming the biggest promo outlet as of late. It’s important to any artist that’s serious about his or her craft to have videos. It’s the best way to help the listener get a better understanding of the message you’re sending. If I could I would do a video for every song.” Thomas has a diverse background in music and explores these themes in his own music. “My musical heroes are people like Marvin Gaye, Tupac, Ice Cube, KRS One, EPMD, Scarface, Redman and mostly anyone that puts on a great show. I grew up on all types of music. As a musician I define myself as versatile. I can write rhythm and blues and I can sing just enough sometimes. I can tell a story or freestyle off the top of my head and I can make party music. I also write political music and just different topics but reality rap is my forte.”

Mickey Avalon In my limited knowledge of the genre, hip hop and rap are still a fairly new classification of music. Only about 30 years in and the innovation appears stagnate. I asked Thomas about hip hop and rap’s longevity. “The sky is still the limit for hip hop and rap because it is a huge market in the music industry. I just think the more accepted it becomes the more watered down it will get. I miss the days where talent got you in but I respect any artist doing their thing and trying to make it. There are so many artists nowadays so everyone has to put the work in. The West Coast is reemerging!” Thomas, along with his cousin and business partner, has developed S.L.A.M. (Support Local Artist Movement) an avenue where artists can submit videos, clothing lines, modeling and exclusive music to www.globalwestdivision.com. You can find out more information about Tiptoe Stallone and Home Invazion on soundcloud.com, facebook.com, youtube. com, reverbnation.com and bandcamp. com.

oogle Mickey Avalon and you’ll get the run down on the guy. His early life reads like a hard core drama where any minute you expect the lead character to finally succumb once and for all to the knock out punches life dealt him that would take and have taken many out early in their first chapter. But as the story reveals, Mickey Avalon is not one to stay down. As I thought about how to write about my interview with Avalon, famous for

Bringing His BIG... Show to The Hood Bar

his “hugely” popular, rap hit about his phenomenal penis as it compares to anyone else’s, there is one thing I want to make perfectly clear: If living through a shit storm without having a monster pity party and instead, kicking life’s ass into successful gear has anything to do with it, his dick is bigger and better and he has equally impressive balls. And here’s why. I don’t really want to over emphasize the hard luck part of this artists’ story, because after spending an hour on the phone with him, that’s not the essence I walked away with. Mickey Avalon is an understated bad ass on one level, who sees no option in anything but surviving and overcoming, doesn’t claim to have all the answers, doesn’t need to make life dramatic for the sake of being more creative, and is, at the end of the day, just doing his best to live a happy life and make a happy life for his family and daughter. On another level, the stage level, he’s a monster egotist, a sexual, hedonistic beast shaking the shadows out of every piece of dirt from his past, exploiting them and rendering them powerless to the thrill of those in attendance who enjoy the hell out of it. Born Yeshe Perl in 1975 to a family that, while not practicing their Jewish born heritage, did stumble upon a bit of a legacy that they would hand down to young Yeshe. Mom worked as a marijuana dealer and Dad was a heroin addict. Avalon followed suit until, in his late teens, after drug dealing and prostituting himself to support his heroin habit, he briefly sought out Orthodox Judaism, married and became a father in his early 20’s. He battled his addiction alongside his sister in Oregon who ultimately relapsed and died from a heroin overdose. It was his return to LA that got him started on his musical endeavors. MTV VJ Simon Rex encouraged Avalon to rap

and collaborated with him developing a following. After a number of collaborations with rap artists in the industry, Avalon released his self-titled debut solo album in 2006. Released through Interscope/ Shoot to Kill Records in association with MySpace Records, the album spawned the singles “Jane Fonda” and “Mr. Right”. In January 2007, Avalon contributed lyrics and vocals on Unwritten Law’s “Shoulda Known Better”. That same year, he was featured in a Boost Mobile rap commercial with fellow rappers Jermaine Dupri and Young Jeezy. Avalon was released from his recording contract with Interscope in 2011 and is currently signed to Suburban Noize Records. On March 12, 2012 he digitally released a 4-track EP entitled On the Ave. His second solo album, Loaded was released on April 24, 2012. I asked him how he was able to turn things around. “First and foremost, not surviving is not an option. You do what it takes to survive and move forward. It’s instinctual. Animals do it. As far as turning something bad into something good...I’m not going to be all dark and Debbie-downer about it. I take it all a little bit tongue and cheek. You can find humor in the darkness, I guess, because you’ve actually lived through it. I’ve been to AA meetings before. I don’t go anymore, but I thought it was impressive how people could tell these horrific stories and laugh about things because they lived through it.” As far as Avalon’s music goes he makes it clear that he would choose a happy life as opposed to the kind of drama that some artists require in order to make “good art”. “I would choose to have a happy life and not have good art over fucking up my life just to make good art. I have a kid of my own and I can’t be selfish. I try to make life good for her too.” In regard to being way outside the box for a white, Jewish born street kid, he shares, “Being out of the box is a good thing, when it works. But you don’t have anything to fall back on either. It’s a risk, and I have to make the rules up as I go along. There’s no right or wrong really. It’s just that everything has a consequence. So I have to decide which consequence I can live with. Kind of like reaching into the fire; you make that decision based on the worth of that thing you’re reaching for and if the consequences are worth it.” He added, “I’ guess I’ve been lucky. Not lucky in the sense that this isn’t something I haven’t worked for, but I’ve been fortunate in that I found something that worked.” I asked Avalon how he views the changes in the record industry. “The record industry changes on a daily basis. I got into the industry on the tail end of an era where if you had a demo, that meant that you saved up, planned and bought the time in the studio to make it happen. I wouldn’t have

even been able to launch a career back then. I wouldn’t have had the time, the money or the dream to make this happen. Now, we can just be messing around having fun and stumble onto a really cool thing. With a little bit of equipment and about three hours you can have a product that’s playable in the clubs, and get it out on the internet. Still, anybody can put it out there. Just because there’s more garbage doesn’t mean anybody’s going to listen to it. Just like you can buy friends on Facebook, but it doesn’t make you legit.” On a more personal level I asked him if and how he was staying clean and healthy. As is key to any recovery program I’ve ever been aware of, he answered with straight up honesty. “I don’t know if I’m clean or healthy. Addiction is hard to get out of when you’re in the middle of it. I’m not clean and sober, but there are certain things that I know I won’t do now. I know I probably drink more than I’d like to. Sometimes you have to put some distance between yourself and certain things. When I was in my addiction it was harder to get out of it. Now that I’m out of it, it’s easier to stay away. Now, there’s nothing that would make go back to that (heroin).” There are some costs to Avalon’s success. “I’m able to support my family. I’m not a bum on the street. But it is work and there’s a tradeoff. I can put my daughter in a good school, but I can’t go to her school function. But I wouldn’t trade it, I’m really thankful for it.” MICKEY AVALON will be making his debut in Palm Desert this Friday at The Hood Bar. He’ll have local dancers filling the very tall, stilettoes of his regular girls as seen in his videos. He’s bringing the party and a lot of energy, so be ready to cut loose of any inhibitions because that’s not what this gig is going to be about. Opening for him are our own local bad asses, Chill Clinton and Thr3 Strykes. Doors open at 8pm to ages 21 and over. There’s a $15 admission with no pre-sales, so get there early or you’ll be listening out at the curb and then everybody will know who’s ISN’T bigger. Gregg Allman: The Highs and Lows of Country Blues

T

here is one genre that costs its player almost everything in order to be able to deliver it with the integrity and simple, stripped down honesty that it was created for; this one brand of music demands that you live through it to legitimately deliver it. BB King lived through it and therefore it lives though him. BB’s own brutal beginnings are evidence of it as even he has said, “Playing the blues is like having to be black twice. Stevie Ray Vaughan missed on both counts, but I never noticed.” Gregory LeNoir Allman, born December 8, 1947, in Nashville, Tennessee, is one such American Rock and blues singer, one that many call the ‘best white blues singer of all time’. Inducted with the Allman Brothers Band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, Gregg also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2006. His distinctive voice placed him in 70th place in the Rolling Stone list of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time”. Gregg Allman will always be known as a singer, songwriter, keyboardist, guitarist, and founding member, but most importantly and proudly, he will be known as a brother of The Allman Brothers Band. The two Allman brothers suffered loss and hardship early on when their father was murdered by a guy he gave a ride home to from the local bar. The relationship between Gregg and his younger brother

10

Duane was explosive in the early years. “I thought he was going to kill me,” shared Gregg. “He tried to hang me once, and it almost worked.” But when Gregg was given a guitar and Duane took interest in it, the dynamic suddenly changed. “We had those silver stings in common that made everything change. After we started playing music together, things began to meld. We were closer than brothers and closer than friends; we were a strong unity. We knew that if the two of us were together, we were never gonna starve, and we were always going to have protection. It was a very secure feeling. There’s more detail about that in my book (My Cross to Bear).” I was extremely honored to hear Gregg tell me his first hand, personal experiences, as he walked me through music history. In his laid back, down to earth, southern drawl, he said, “I was just clowning around in Los Angeles, at the ripe old age of 19, trying to find work on my own, and I wasn’t doing really well at it at all,” Gregg recalls. “Then on March 26, 1969, the phone rang and it was him (his brother, Duane). He said, ‘Gregg, I’m tired of working out of this studio in Mussel Shoals. I’ve got five guys together, including me and I want to get out on the road.’ Then he paid me the greatest compliment of my life. ‘I need you to come here, round it up and send it someplace.’ I said, ‘Let me hang up quick and I’ll get there.” This was the start of Rock and Roll history. A number of characteristic songs that brought the Allman Brothers Band success were written by Gregg. Unusual for the time, the band was based in the Southeastern United States. Their music incorporating an innovative fusion of rock, blues, and country, and their music became known as “Southern Rock”. Following the death of his brother Duane Allman in 1971, and death of bass guitarist, Berry Oakley, one year later, both in motorcycle accidents, the band struggled on and continued to perform and record. Allman developed a solo career and a band under his own name. Allman’s solo music has perhaps a greater resonance of soul music than his work with ABB, possibly because of the influence of artists such as Bobby Bland and Little Milton, singers who he has long admired. Once again, Gregg was living the genre that his voice has, so famously, represented. I asked Gregg how he dealt with the loss of his brother. “I don’t know if you’ve had somebody close to you die or not,” he began in a voice that reflected the loss as if it had only recently happened. “It’s hard. It’s real hard. But in this case, I know in my heart and soul, like I knew then, if it had been the other way around, I would have wanted them to go on to greatness, and I’m pretty sure that my brother would have wanted the same.” Addressing Gregg’s very public battle

with drugs and alcohol, I asked him where his health and sobriety stood. He reminded me that it was all in his book that I had admittedly not read. After giving me just a little bit of grief about that, he then went on to share, “I’m 19 years clean and sober and have a brand new 29 year old liver! I feel like a million bucks most of the time. I did have a bit of a scare this past month. I went to London recently and got a hold of a parasite or something. I was feeling really down. It scared me to death. I thought there was something wrong with my liver.” I prodded Gregg about how he won the battle of his addictions. He reminded me that it was all in the book. “Oh boy it took a big one. I didn’t know how to stop. Nobody does. I didn’t know the first thing to do. All’s I know, is when I’d stop, hours later, my body would be just crying for it. It would overtake me, and I’d go to the bar. I did most of my drinking at home. I didn’t like to be seen and all that shit. It finally came to me in 1996. I got a letter saying ‘You’ve been voted to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.’ So I said, ‘Oh my God, I cannot go up there and look like I’ve so much as thought about having a drink!’ Well that was impossible. So that day, I measured the exact amount- I sat down and figured it out - just how much I could drink per hour, so I wouldn’t have the shakes but wouldn’t be all gaga.” He started laughing and apologized. “I realize I can’t say that ‘cause there’s a ‘Lady Gaga’, so to be politically perfect, I’ll say I didn’t want to get screwed up! I was staying at the Waldorf Astoria, of course. I went down stairs to get some Marlboros and of course, I saw everybody there. Band members I hadn’t seen in years! All sitting at the bar, sayin’, ‘Common Gregg, let us buy ya one.’ That was a mistake. Long story short, I get to the ceremony, and I could barely stand up. I was kind of rockin’ back and forth. Willie Nelson who was presenting it to us asked me, ‘Gregory, are you all right boy?’ I said, ‘No sir, I am NOT alright.’ He said, ‘Well, you want to sit down?’ And I said, ‘Will, there ain’t no chairs up here.’ We went on through with it. I meant to say something about everybody who had a hand in getting me there, and I walked up there and said ‘This is for my brother’, and walked off,” he said reflecting the deep disappointment he bore at the memory. With ice in his voice he continued, “Some kind soul shoved that video in my face the next morning while I was all hung over! That did it. That DID IT! I said to myself, ‘This has gone too far! I’m not going to live like this!’ “ “I went home to California, ordered a private male nurse to my house. It was the only time out of 14 rehabs that I didn’t have that tiny voice way in the back of my head saying, ‘Yeah, man, we’re gonna do this dance for ‘em, and go through all this crap like everybody wants us to. We’ll clear on down the road. We’ll be alright then; we’ll

have a couple of cold beers and watch the game.’ It doesn’t work like that! This time the voice wasn’t there. And that’s about the only thing comforting about the whole thing. That voice was not there. The next two weeks, I quit cocaine, alcohol, cigarettes and all of it. Today I can barely remember it. I remember I hurt like hell all the time, and that there was an earth quake. It was so bad, I guess my mind just wiped it out.” “I don’t go to meetings,” he added. “Meetings work for most people. They bothered me. I went to my buddy, Waylon Jennings, and I said, ‘Man, what do you do when you go to the damn meeting and they ask you for an autograph!’ ‘ Anonymous, my ass!’ Waylan said, ‘Man, I don’t go to meetings. Me and Mr. Johnny Cash sit down at the kitchen table over a coffee pot and we yap about things once a week. That’s our meeting.’” It was here, Gregg politely told me he had to cut the interview short but invited me to come back stage to see him, but with an assignment. I am to read his book because he promises to quiz me on it. Perhaps then he’ll be able to tell me more about the new album he’s heavy into where he is writing every song himself. Or maybe he’ll have more information about the movie that they’re making from his book, My Cross to Bear, the one I am reading. Maybe he’ll know who they’re casting as the young Gregg Allman and the “not as young” Gregg Allman. I did get to sneak in the awful question, “What’s your favorite song?” He laughed politely and said, “That’s like asking, which one is your favorite child!” He took a second to ponder it. He came back with, “The next one.”

TOM JONES TOM JONES “Spirit In The Room” (Rounder Records) Mention the name Tom Jones, and people usually equate him with louche lounge singers like Wayne Newton and Englebert Humperdinck. While those singers seem content to trade on past glories and hit singles from 40 or 50 years ago, Jones is more of a musical explorer,

eager to conquer new territories. Tom Jones was born Thomas John Woodward in Pontypridd, South Wales, England in 1940. At age 12 he battled Tuberculosis. As a teen, he idolized soul belters like Little Richard, Jackie Wilson and Solomon Burke. By the time he was 17, Jones was married and a father. By the early 60s he began pursuing a career in music gigging in clubs as “Tommy Scott” with his band, The Senators. He recorded a string of singles with innovative producer, Joe Meek, but they went nowhere. His luck changed when talent agent Gordon Mills caught his act. Hoping to capitalize on the popularity of the 1963 film, Tom Woodward was re-christened Tom Jones.

“Spirit In The Room” (Rounder Records)

Everything clicked when Jones recorded the insistent “It’s Not Unusual” in 1965. A brassy pop confection, it immediately catapulted Jones to the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Suddenly, Jones was the most popular vocalist of the British Invasion. A string of hit singles followed, “ThunderBall,” “Delilah,” “What’s New Pussycat,” “She’s A Lady” and “The Green, Green Grass Of Home.” Each one of these songs powered by Jones’ dynamic vocals. As a singer,

Jones was able to shift effortlessly from a swivel-hipped Don Juan to a warm, introspective crooner. By the end of the 60s Jones had relocated to Los Angeles to star in his own variety show, “This Is Tom Jones.” The TV program provided a weekly showcase for Jones’ considerable charms. Many a matron sharpened her pitching arm, flinging assorted ladies underthings in Tom Jones’ direction. Thus a legend was born! When the television show ended in 1971, Jones accepted a lucrative deal playing extended engagements in Las Vegas. Jones was able to pal around with his idol, Elvis Presley, but he neglected his recording career for the remainder of the 70s. As the new decade dawned, Jones began recording again, but he kind of got trapped in the Country Western genre. Gordon Mills had passed away, and Jones allowed his son, Mark Woodward to manage his career. As the 80s came to a close, Woodward had steered Jones away from the narrow confines of Country music and paired him with eclectic Electric Dance collective, Art Of Noise. Their masterful rearrangement of Prince’s song “Kiss” propelled Jones to the Top 10 in the U.S. and the U.K. The innovative video that accompanied the song went into heavy rotation on MTV introducing Jones’ eternal Sex God energy to a whole new generation. Jones wasted no time capitalizing on

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

Consider This

his new found popularity. He recorded a wonderful album, Carrying The Torch. Produced by Van Morrison, it included several songs Van-the-Man wrote specifically for Jones. (Sadly, the album was never released in the U.S.) In 1994, Jones scored another MTV hit with the Dance Rock track, “If I Only Knew.” The following year he offered a rollicking version of Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” At the beginning of the new millennium, everyone from Barenaked Ladies, Portishead, Simply Red and the Pretenders were lining up to work with Jones. The album, Re-Load featured Jones re-interpreting songs made famous by Talking Heads, Ella Fitzgerald, The Kinks and Iggy Pop. In 2010 Jones teamed with producer, Ethan Johns. Son of venerable producer Glyn Johns, (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and The Who) Ethan has carved out his own niche, producing artists as disparate as Ryan Adams, Kings Of Leon, Victoria Williams and Rufus Wainwright. Their collaboration resulted in the GospelSoul album, Praise & Blame. Now the duo have joined forces again to record what looks to be Jones’ most rewarding effort to date, Spirit In The Room. The album opens with “Tower Of Song.” Written by Leonard Cohen, the tune is a custom fit for Jones, a regal lion in his twilight years… “I was born like this, I had no choice/I was born with the gift of a golden voice/And twenty seven angels from the great beyond, they tied me to the stage right here in the tower of song.” Thankfully Jones has resisted the Septuagenarian impulse to gussy up Great American Songbook standards. (This means you, Rod Stewart. Stop it!) Instead, Jones and Johns decided to re-interpret songs from Rock’s songwriting aristocracy: Tom Waits, Richard Thompson and Paul McCartney, to name a few. On “Bad As Me,” written by Tom Waits, Jones adopts Waits’ Carnival Barker growl. The instrumentation feels like wheezy, broken circus music. Sparse accompaniment is provided by a toy drum kit, Tack Piano, Ukulele and a snakecharmer Chamberlain. Thompson’s “Dimming Of The Day” is an elegant declaration of love… “You pull me like the moon pulls the tide, you know just where I keep my better side.” Paul McCartney’s “(I Want To ) Come Home” is a surprisingly wistful tune from “the Cute Beatle.” The lyrics are graceful and tender and Jones delivers them with the sagacity of age… “It’s been fun hanging onto the moon, heading into the sun/ But it’s been too long and I want to come home.” Jones and Johns flex their songwriting

muscles on a couple of tracks, “Traveling Shoes” and “Lone Pilgrim.” The results are pretty spectacular. The former is a heady brew of Gospel and Rockabilly. The bare bones melody is augmented by slapping String Bass, tambourine and slide guitar. The lyrics offer a cantankerous showdown with the Grim Reaper. That latter is a Countrified hymn that also grapples with death… “But calm is my feeling, at rest is my soul.” Jones and Johns retro-fit three tracks to highlight Tom Jones’ strengths. “Love And Blessings” is a jaunty yet erudite cut from Paul Simon’s triumphant 2011 album, So Beautiful, So What. Jones and Johns recalibrate the rhythm locking into a tight Jazz/Funk groove. The assured instrumentation, including cowbell, organ and stinging guitar fills, bookend the philosophical lyrics… “Love and blessings, simple kindness/ Ours to hold onto, not to keep.” As recorded by the Low Anthem, “Charlie Darwin” is a low key alt. country jem. Much like the Rolling Stones did with “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” Jones and Johns add a an ethereal choir, Stile Antico. The track is transformed from a spare acoustic song into a heavenly beatification. Finally, Jones sandblasts the hallucinatory crust from “Just Dropped In,” (Kenny Rogers’ 60s hit with the First Edition). The result is a Psychedelic ChaCha replete with stuttery, skittering guitar riffs and Jones’ gritty vocals. Other stand out tracks include the joyful, jangly swagger of Odetta’s “Hit Or Miss,” the sepulchral Delta Blues of Blind Willie Johnson’s “Soul Of A Man,” and “All Blues Hail Mary,” originally recorded by Singer/Songwriter Joe Henry. Anchored by jagged, jazzy piano chords, the lyrics trace the link between the sacred and profane. The album closes with a sober read of Bob Dylan’s “When The Deal Goes Down.” Modest and heartfelt, restless and spiritual. Much like Johnny Cash’s American series, Spirit In The Room solidifies Tom Jones’ place in Rock & Roll’s hierarchy. The perennial sex symbol is now a reflective Lion in Winter.

The performance in their hometown will feature their newly released single entitled “Sunny Days” with photo opportunities and a “meet and greet“ for all their fans. Band members include Evan Boydstun, Michael Ramirez, Ryan Cenicola and Matt Sutton, all from the Coachella Valley. Inspired by their new single “Sunny Days”, the first 111 fans to attend will enjoy mini Peach Perfection Smoothies provided

by Jamba Juice. Other vendors at the mall will also participate in the promotion, including Bath and Body Works Gift Sets, $111 in gift cards and more! On Sunday, June 2, at 2 p.m., they will make an appearance at the “Rock for Tony“ Benefit Show being held at the Shenandoah Springs Club, 32-610 Desert Moon Drive in Thousand Palms. (760) 343-3669. The band started a while back when they were in middle and high school. With support from all of their parents, who were basically their managers, roadies and drivers, when they started out, this local band is realizing their dream and gaining attention from major labels. Thanks to multi-platinum producer and recording artist, Ronnie King, this group has a very bright future. King happened to see the group on CBS-2 Eye on the Desert, and sent an e-mail to Raul Ramirez, who in turn contacted King. They soon went to King’s recording studio located in his ranch in Thermal. “We discussed the sound that the boys wanted to get across,” said King. “They wanted it to be as close to their live performance as possible. I offered to add

sounds to the tracks to create a bigger production, but they wanted to be true to their sound.” For being so young, they had a clear picture on how they wanted to present themselves. “We are not a manufactured group,” said Cenicola. “We want to be judged on our ability to play as real musicians.” ONE 11 has performed in over 200 Southern California shows; won the “Next Big Thing Tour” in Hollywood; voted “Best Rock Band in Orange County; two-time McCallum Theatre Open Call Finalists; voted “Best Band in the Valley” by Desert Magazine; were selected as the “Rising Stars

of the Desert” by Marker Broadcasting; perform at Downtown Disney’s House of Blues; the Key Club in Hollywood; the Coach House and Chain Reaction in Orange County and will make this appearance after performing a great show at the San Diego House of Blues this past Sunday. That is impressive for anyone at any age and these young men are aiming for the stars. “We would like to have everyone come to the mall to check us out,” said Boydstun. “We will perform a little something for everyone, young and old, crossing genre’s from rock to ska, reggae, to pop, punk, classic rock along with songs from our new album, entitled “It’s About Time.” To listen to their new EP promotion go to: http://bit.ly/15OrdLo and also ONE111band.com. Broadly speaking, where the new world wine seems to be uniformly rich, ripe, jammy, and juicy, the unique French version tends to be more meaty, rustic, and tannic. The wine world wins here where we can enjoy both expressions of this hearty grape. When opening this fine example of Cahors Malbec, we were greeted by an

Definitely a red meat wine (maybe that’s why it has become so popular & famous in Argentina) but realize you can also pair this up quite nicely with spicy Mexican, Cajun, Indian, Thai or Italian fare. We did mention Restaurant Week—yes? Also be on the lookout for a glass of Malbec when at restaurants whose specialties are game, lamb, chili, stews, and sausages. The Malbec flavor profile starts with a predominance of black cherries, plums, and spices. Then things start to open up: dark chocolate seems to permeate around other flavors of blackberries, dried fruits, earth, game, leather, licorice, tobacco, and vanilla. No wonder it can match all of the mentioned cuisines. Red wine fans are particularly keen about Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Malbec is a red that can pal around with those two. Indeed, for such a long time, all three were blended together—along with Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot—to produce those famous Bordeaux wines. Due to growing difficulties (i.e., costs), Malbec got edged out of the modern Bordeaux band but, like the Phoenix, has risen enormously in its new found homeland of Argentina. Since Argentina has taken charge in the production of Malbec , almost all Malbec that you find at our markets are from South America . The range from $8 to $20 will get you a decent to very good quality wine. I look forward to doing an entire article on this New World wine. However, as to appreciation, quality, and just general good-to-know stuff, why not first go back to France to try the original. I know—we’d all love to go to France, but to save us the packing, air flights, and jet lag, (j’suis desolée Paris) at least we can be comforted with the fact that a very nice bottle awaits us locally. hile gearing up for the coming 2013 Palm Springs Restaurant Week celebration, I thought it would be a great idea to prime up our vino sense and sensibility so we’ll be in shape for all the gourmet food and fine wine ahead us. And this is a great time to get out and try some of those different grape varietals and wines that, for some strange reason, we’ve been putting off. What’s up with that? We’ve just finished a three-part series on Rosés and I know the weather here behooves us to talk about some refreshing whites, but let me slip in a quick juicy red that’s playing the seductive siren to those vino lovers old and new. I know a bunch of you have already moved into the murky depths of Malbec. I write “murky” as in the sense of “dark” or “shadowy” for this original French grape produces some of the darkest wine around town. In fact, in France way back in the day, it was affectionately known as “le vin noir”— the black wine! What a great bottle to be enjoying while watching a scary movie at midnight. Of course you foodies are well aware of the health benefits associated by means of very dark fruits with all of those antioxidants hanging about. Same with this wine: all current health studies find that Malbec is one of the healthiest. A glass can provide comparable health benefits similiar to those reaped by drinking green tea. It helps in the prevention of heart attacks and stroke, while actively increasing your good

and was treated for kennel cough and an abscess on his neck. As his weight increased from 53 to 85 pounds, Mahko turned into a real character, a big goofy puppy with a comical streak. A German shepherd breeder happened to see Mahko at an event, and informed us he was of exceptional breed standard. We’ll never know how or why this magnificent animal ending up starving on the streets of San Bernardino and languishing in a shelter. Today Mahko is living like a prince in a wonderful Coachella Valley home. Curtis and Vanessa enjoy getting the dogs healthy and gorgeous for their future homes. They love watching their dogs’ coats go from a dull and brittle texture into a glossy and beautiful sheen. They also enjoy the occasional challenges presented by helping a dog adapt to a new life. Ina is quite a character, keeping Curtis and Vanessa laughing with her antics. She’s dexterous and can open doors and windows unless they are completely latched. Ina knows “shake” and “high five”. She is the perfect combination of affection and independence. Ina loves to snuggle on the bed, but willingly returns to her bed on the floor. Both dogs are great with children and other dogs. Scooby and Ina are inseparable, and a home that will take both of them is needed. How did they select a German shepherd foster home? They’re not talking, but these are very smart dogs with fabulous personalities. German shepherds are known to be one of the most intelligent and loyal breeds. This is the breed that protects our military in the most dangerous parts of the globe. This is the breed that now bravely searches through the rubble in Oklahoma for tornado survivors. They are my favorite breed. I grew up with a German shepherd, and he was my protector and best friend. That dog, named “Boy”, saved my life when I was 6 months old. These active, bold, determined dogs make an ideal household companion and family pet. Vanessa describes why she and Curtis find fostering so rewarding, “Everyone has their piece of the puzzle that fits together to rescue these animals. Some donate money, others volunteer at a shelter walking dogs, others like us, foster. Fostering is perfect for us because we work at home and have the time to spend with the dogs. Plus, our ‘permanent’ dogs are tolerant and always welcome the newcomers. We simply want to do our part to help homeless animals.” If you are interested in adopting Scooby and Ina, or would enjoy fostering a dog or cat, call Loving All Animals at (760) 834-7000.

Fostering the Shepherds urtis Sweesy and Vanessa Ruggles are foster parents for Loving All Animals, specializing in caring for German shepherd dogs. Their dining room wall is a shrine, a “wall of love” containing the photos of the shepherds they’ve loved, trained, and helped place in forever homes. Curtis goes with Loving All Animals to the public shelters to help select their next foster dog. He has an amazing ability to connect with and train these beautiful animals. They all receive Native American names, reflecting Curtis’ Lakota Sioux heritage. One of Curtis and Vanessa’s most rewarding foster dogs was named Mahko, which means “cute”, who was on death row in the San Bernardino City shelter. The dog was a skeleton.....it was horrifying to see his condition when he bounded out of the kennel. Yet the dog showed sheer joy and gratitude as we traveled home to the Coachella Valley. The wonderful feeling you get rescuing a dog from a shelter and seeing him respond to that second chance is so rewarding. Mahko arrived thin and frail at his foster home,

Experience It, Taste It, Live It!

Trio Restaurant: Where Palm Springs Eats I

came to the realization while dining at Trio restaurant in Palm Springs that not only do I love to eat, but I also love the whole dining experience. Trio has one of the most unique menus in the Coachella Valley, from Crawfish Pot Pie to Lamb Shank; and it has all been created masterfully by Chef Mark Van Laanen. Mark has been in the restaurant business for over twenty-five years, and has captured his love of New Orleans in many of his dishes. Chef Van Laanen, partnered with Tony Marchese an entrepreneurial executive, made the success of Trio inevitable. Trio is located in the uptown design district where art is abundant, including inside Trio itself. The art work displayed inside the restaurant is for sale, and 10% to 20% of the profits go to charity. So basically it is as if you are dining in an art gallery. My wife and I were immediately whisked off to our table and greeted by Terrence, who became one of our favorite servers of all time. Terrence had an amazing way about him that made us feel as if we were the only patrons in the restaurant. He came

up with brilliant suggestions all evening, including our first appetizer which was Country Pate. The Pate was house made with pork, veal, and green peppercorns, bacon wrapped and served with mixed greens in balsamic vinaigrette, garnished with olives and cornichons, my wife’s favorite. I also ordered white bean hummus which was very mild, topped with paprika and served with crostini. Terrence also recommended we share a salad; we chose roasted carrot. The salad was amazing with roasted carrots, arugula, fresh ricotta, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds tossed in a citrus vinaigrette. After having the salad we realized the genius of Chef Van Laanen; it is how he makes amazing combination choices in his creations. The roasted smoky flavor of the seeds mixed with the citrus in the vinaigrette made the salad a treat not soon forgotten. I was torn between entrees, so Terrence suggested I have both. Now that was genius. I’m a gentleman, so I shared one of my entrees with my wife. The shared entree was the St. Louis Style Spare Ribs,

chipotle rub with house made barbeque sauce, on a bed of slaw. The recipe must be secret so I cannot write much more about the ribs except they fell off the bone and were amazing. My other choice was the Shrimp Nola, also known as Shrimp Creole. The sauteed shrimp in Louisiana Red Butter Garlic Sauce was served over brown rice. The Red Butter Garlic Sauce was made with paprika in a beer and Worcestershire sauce reduction. My wife had Pan Roasted Alaskan Halibut, with an orange ginger glaze. I had a couple of bites that were delicious, and I know my wife really enjoyed it, as she didn’t eat all of my shrimp after she tasted the Halibut. The shrimp was simply delicious. We also had a delightful side of sour cream mashed potatoes. My wife had a glass of Babich Sauvignon Blanc, and by recommendation from Terrence, a quarter glass of 2011 Tolosa Edna Valley No Oak Chardonnay; Chablis like style, crisp acidity balanced, but is mineral light, with citrus and a taste of honey. She later was brought a refreshing

Spa-tini which was Pearl Cucumber infused Vodka and Agave, with a splash of Lime Juice. I had a nice brisk glass of iced tea that kept magically refilling itself all evening. We both had a cappuccino to accompany our desserts. Terrence just told us he would bring us dessert, which we liked, as he had been right on about everything all night. We were not disappointed with the butterscotch pudding, which was thick and creamy. We also had a piece of their Three Nut Torte, an indescribably delicious treat that finished off an incredible dining experience.

ilms that were allegedly made but never distributed for public consumption are part of Hollywood’s enduring lore. With the upcoming Palm Springs International Short Film Festival and the promised AM/FM screenings, my dreams have been filled with ultra vivid short movies that I’ve heard or and want to see. They may or may not actually exist. The best moves are the ones we anticipate, imagine or dream. After all, the most vivid screen is in your head. I’m sharing them here because, for my own sanity, I need to purge them from my mind -- set them free. Who knows, maybe they will materialize. If you stumble across them somewher, please contact me. A three-minute short, probably shot on 16mm. It looks like Malibu in the mid 1950s. This sweet and rather poignant, professionally shot “home movie” was allegedly found among Einstein’s personal effects. They were in a shoebox, with a batch of uncashed checks, at his Princeton office after his death. There’s no sound, but there’s no mistaking these two iconic figures were quite taken with each other and were loving and gentle friends. There’s a moment where Albert writes his famous equation for energy equaling mass times

the speed of light squared in the sand and Marilyn draws a heart around it. She nods and smiles as he says something when the waves wash it away. It looks like Marilyn wipes away tears as she turns her head away from him. It is unknown who shot this very intimate moment of two minds meeting in time and space. HITCHCOCKED!

While Alfred Hitchcock was shooting PSYCHO, a second unit was making a secret grind-house thriller, tentatively titled VOYEUR. It was ostensibly about Janet Leigh’s stand-in who is stalked by a maniacal peeping tom. Sadly, Grace Mandy, the actress playing the ambitious stand-in is accidentally killed on camera when a prop knife malfunctions. Hitch destroyed the negative and reportedly went into a deep depression. However, one crudely edited work print remained in an editor’s work bay. This film has the raw, stylistic power of “Citizen Kane” and says more about the seductive allure of Hollywood during the late 50s and the movie business in general than anything I’ve seen since “Sunset Boulevard.” I’m assuming this film was meant as a kind of sequel to follow “Psycho.” It would have been a wallop of a one-two punch for Hitch. Today, it’s difficult to know just how much in this film is authentic, but there’s no

denying the poignant, irony in the shadowy images of a pretty young stand-in who’s dying to be as famous as the big glamorous star who pretends to die in a seedy motel’s shower. I understand the original title was “The Stand In” and then “Voyeur.” But someone has inserted “HITCHCOCKED!” over the opening credits. There is a visceral, gut-wrenching blow at the final fade-out when the last images of a dying actress dissolve to black and the off-screen applause of the crew -- who still assume she’s merely acting -- continues. The name of the actress has been erased from the records. A few days ago, after an extensive internet search, I was relieved to meet the star of the film, now a youthful 78. Mandalya Garcia is the Grace Mandy of the film. She lives alone near the Patton Museum and operates an abused animal shelter behind her isolated desert home near the museum. YOUNG HITLER’S SECRET LIFE

When Dustin Hoffman was about 20 and studying at the Pasadena Playhouse, he and an unknown friend made a short, 8mm home movie. In it, Dustin plays young Adolf Hitler during the brief interval between the time Adolf was kicked out of art school in Vienna and when he went off to fight for Germany in WW I. The no budget film was shot on stolen locations in Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank and Catalina. The scenes are of Adolf joining an occult book reading club and creating a rucus, his chance lunch and food fight with Sigmund Freud in Vienna, a botched understudy role as Judas for the Oberammergau Passion play and his trip to England to visit and mooch off his brother Alois who managed a failing Blackpool beach hotel. The entire soundtrack is Hoffman doing a voice-over narrative in a lisping German accent that ranges from weepy to crazy rants. But it is all gibberish and totally incoherent. A few title cards, like in silent movies, tell us all we need to know.

Hilarious and extremely disturbing. We see the glimmers of a man becoming a monster. (And a brilliant young man becoming an actor!) Even worse, we love and pity the Fuhrer-to-be. Hoffman makes him one of us. For a long time in his early professional career, Hoffman said to anyone who would listen, he wanted to portray Hitler on screen. None of these films exist. That’s because the best moves are the ones that you anticipate, imagine or dream. The most vivid screen is the one that’s in your head. NOW SHOWING: STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS

Director J.J. Abrams follows up his origin Trek movie with an action thriller that continues the story and tone of his 2009 hit. Big action, some humor and lots of talk when the Enterprise crew is called home, only to find an unstoppable terror that leaves out world in a state of chaos and panic. There are personal scores to resolve as Kirk wages a deadly mind game in which love, friendship and sacrifice are part of the mix. Benedict Cumberbatch is a terrific antagonist who makes it real. NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: MAMA

Guillermo del Toro presents a supernatural thriller that has a great look but tells a story that is derivative and unnecessarily complicated. Jessica Chastain is fine as a rocker who inherits the two nieces of her incapacitated boyfriend. But are the little girls, who have been living on their own in the wild for five years, really all that alone? Some nice ghostly jolts in a first half that soon loses its power. Also available: Arnold Schwarzenegger attempts a big-screen come back in THE LAST MAN STANDING. Director Kim JeeWoon delivers some nice action set pieces but the overall tone with its tongue-incheek asides makes it a sad enterprise for all but the most undemanding viewers. Comments? rite about what you know” has long been a fundamental directive for authors. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels This Side of Paradise (1920), The Beautiful and Damned (1922), “ The Great Gatsby (1925) and Tender is the Night (1934) successfully incorporated his own interests, lifestyle and culture. His stories also included his wife Zelda, not just as a character reference, but her words, work and world. Out now are several newly published books about the complicated life of Zelda Fitzgerald. Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald

(St. Martin’s Press, 384 pages) by Therese Anne Fowler, Beautiful Fools: The Last Affair of Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald (Overlook Hardcover, 368 pages) by R. Clifton Spargo, and Call Me Zelda (Penguin Group, 352 pages) by Erika Robuck. All are fictional interpretations based on Zelda’s actual life. Why the sudden burst of productivity around Mrs. Fitzgerald? One reason is the newly released Gatsby film starring Leo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, which is now in theatres. The timeliness of the movie certainly helps promote these literary works. There have also been a slew of popular novels about woman and their famous partners. But

mainly, Zelda’s influence in shaping her husband’s work is substantially more significant than just being the woman behind the man or his muse. In fact, Zelda accused Scott of plagiarizing her writing. Zelda Fitzgerald has been a topic of interest to writers, literary scholars and feminists for decades. Born in 1900 to a prominent, well-to-do Southern family, she met Scott at a country club ball while he was stationed at a near by military base. She was a creative spirit and the out-going, outspoken, spoiled socialite was unimpressed with him. Although he attended an Ivy League school and his family was well connected, he did not have the wealth, the prominence or charisma to woo her. But Scott persisted, unwilling to give up -- sound familiar? After he was published and paid for his first book, Zelda joined him in New York and they were married. They lived an extravagant life in the United States and abroad enjoying parties and fame. They were friends with Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and many of the famous expatriate community of the era. But all was not copasetic for this Jazz Age couple. Zelda was witty, poetic and loved to converse. She was good writer. To help finance their lavish lifestyle, and likely to get equal attention as a creative force, Zelda wrote magazine articles and short stories. She helped Scott write a play. However, they were not equals, they were rivals. She resented that Scott used her words and took

her ideas. He didn’t like that she wrote and fictionalized their lives, not because it was personal, but because it was his territory and he had first dibs. Zelda kept diaries and Scott used them in his work often quoting verbatim. Both Scott and Zelda partied hard and instead of finding a way to enhance their creativity together, they became selfdestructive. The two remained married but went their own ways. Scott went to Hollywood to write screenplays and Zelda went to a sanitarium. Maybe depressed, maybe bi-polar or simply oppressed and frustrated with life, it was in this setting that Zelda wrote her only novel, Save Me the Waltz (1932). Scott followed with Tender is the Night (1934). Both novels are on the same subject and a close reflection of their actual lives. Still competing. Author Fowler’s Z, covers Zelda’s entire life and struggles in a first person narrative. In Beautiful Fools, Spargo crafts a portrait of the couple at their best and worst on a trip to Cuba. Robuck’s Call Me Zelda, a nurse befriends Zelda during her stay in the sanitarium and comes to believe Zelda may be the real creative force in the Fitzgerald household. All three novels color an interesting and plausible portrait of Zelda and her love for and life with Scott. These fictional accounts allow the reader a fresh look at the Fritzgeralds and their valued contributions to American literature and culture.

To start, do you know who is in charge of your business? It is not the manager or owner - it is the customer. Serving your customer has to be your primary focus. It has to be your passion to provide value to your customers. Businesses that focus on the bottom line over the customers often underperform. A happy customer wants to give you their money with a strong bottom line being the result of satisfied customers. A happy customer helps your business by word of mouth. An unhappy customer tells more people about the bad experience more than a happy one. For success, always

focus on delivering a consistent, quality experience. The manager or owner needs to be your lead rain maker. A rain maker is the person driving sales. Ideally, they should have good people skills so that employees and customers alike want to be around them. Life is too short to deal with disagreeable people for long periods of time. Many business people fail to check their ego at the door and surround themselves with the most talented people that they can find. Weak leaders surround themselves with ‘yes men’ who are not as valuable as those who can help a business to become all it can be. When investing money in the business, figure out how a dollar invested creates more in cash flow. You have to spend money to make money but dollars wasted create no value to you or your customers. Many people focus on unnecessary systems and gadgets rather than spending their time and money on things that actually benefit the business. Use failures as springboards to success. So long as you learn from your failures, each failure is a step toward your ultimate success.

If you don’t know how to do a component of your business, get help. Can’t afford it? Guess what, you can’t afford not to. Successful businesses have competencies at all levels and strive to minimize weaknesses. Many business owners do everything themselves and trust no one else. In truth, very few businesses succeed with this approach. The most successful businesses build a sense of collaboration and trust. If your business is struggling or failing, you may need to pivot. Pivoting is changing your business plan or products to better fit customer wants and needs. Many people think about making changes but are fearful to take actions. You can’t succeed if you don’t try. Along those lines, what differentiates your business from the competition? Find

a way to set your business apart from the others. As others will copy your best ideas, never rest on your laurels. How do you market your business? Any business needs a measurable and defined marketing plan to reach potential customers. Marketing plan results are seldom immediate and take time and commitment. Many business people have great grandiose plans but fail in to take care of the customer in front of them. Success means thinking big but acting small. No matter your role in a business, success is a mix of hard work, passion and a positive attitude. Without a passion for what you do, you and your business can never reach its maximum potential. Organizations like the CVWBC, ShareKitchen, SCORE and CVEP are low cost options dedicated to helping you.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND MEANS DUI’s and ACCIDENTS I

am often asked if areas of law are cyclical. After thinking about it I realized that potential clients do not file for Divorce around the Holidays for the sake of their kids. The need for Trust and Business work can occur all year long but most of this work comes during our “Season”. Our main holidays mean an influx of visitors and parties and thus more traffic and drinking. Thus more clients will be calling, in the next week or two and July 4th, about Auto Accidents and Drunk Driving. I realize that no matter what I write here most of you will not follow or remember my directions and many of you will get stopped at a DUI checkpoint over the Memorial Day Weekend. Sometimes your lack of memory is from Black and White fever for which you do not have to have been drinking. On my legal radio show I started off each episode saying People Don’t Plan to Fail, They Fail to Plan. If you understand and remember what I am writing this week you will be Planning Ahead. If you are stopped for a possible DUI remember that the Field Sobriety Tests (FST’s) at the scene are OPTIONAL as is the BREATH TEST

at the scene. Politely tell the officer that you understand the FST and Breath test are optional and you opt “not to take them”. Then be courteous and request a Blood Test. They will have to take you to the hospital or police station to get a professional to draw your blood. There is a case a few weeks old that requires a licensed person if there is a refusal and a Forced Blood Draw. I predict it will extend to regular blood draws soon. The following is a step by step of what will happen with a DUI: A DUI is a criminal offense that has two separate legal proceedings: Court and DMV Booking and Custody: The officer will snatch your license and give you a pink form which is a temporary license for 30 and take you to the station. You may be asked to submit to another chemical test to determine your Blood Alcohol Content and you will be fingerprinted and a booking photograph will be taken. You will be in custody and released on your own recognizance after 4 hours. Schedule a DMV Hearing Within 10 days. Retain an Attorney.

Rent versus Buy

e are all faced with the decision of whether to rent a home or purchase one at sometime in our lives. Do we pursue the American dream and the pride of homeownership or do we maintain the freedom and flexibility afforded by renting our home? The Internet is full of articles containing advice, mathematical formulas, and opinions on the subject, but the author’s bias is often evident and they seem somewhat impersonal to me. If we simply “crunch the numbers”, today’s historically low interest rates combined with relatively low home prices when compared to current rental rates for similar properties makes it a no brainer; purchasing a home is by far the more cost effective choice. But in my experience making the decision to rent or to buy a home is based on much more than just economics. The decision to rent or buy is a personal decision and unique to each individual’s situation which boils down to timing, timing, timing! Homeownership represents stability, responsibility, and in most cases a long-term commitment. As young adults when we

24

first leave the family nest (either voluntarily or on the end of a boot) we are concerned with our initial goals of getting an education, a good job or career, and finding a spouse. Buying a home is one of the last things on our minds. The timing is just not right to be a homeowner yet. And we all know some people who seem to spend their entire life avoiding responsibility and longterm commitments. For these folks the

DMV Hearing: Your lawyer presents evidence and can subpoena witnesses, including the arresting officer. Your attorney can advocate for your license and driving privileges on your behalf, and the DMV will then rule on whether or not the officer had reasonable cause to take your license. The DMV hearing is stacked against the driver as the hearing officer is both the prosecutor and judge. However it gives you a glimpse of the case and the evidence against the driver. Arraignment: You, or your attorney on your behalf, will appear and enter a plea not guilty. Plea Bargains and Pretrial Motions: After the arraignment your attorney can discuss the case with the DA and possibly negotiate a plea bargain or set the case for Motions to Dismiss and or for a Pre Trial or Trial Trial: The DA and your lawyer will present evidence, argue, and cross-examine any witnesses. The jury will then decide whether or not you are guilty of driving under the influence and driving with a blood alcohol of over a .08.

Sentencing: The court sentences you after a plea bargain or conviction. The penalties will differ based on the circumstances of your case, but could include fines, jail time or home arrest with an ankle bracelet, community service, and alcohol education. home. But in the final analysis the timing has to be right and that is a decision that each of us must make for ourselves. This week’s real estate tip: If the timing in your life is not right for you to buy a home and you are looking to rent a house (or condo), contact a local real estate broker or agent. Not all real estate professionals assist renters but many do. This is a free service to renters provided by local brokers and agents and they can provide you access to many properties that would not otherwise be available to you plus you will get the benefit of their real estate expertise, advice, and assistance at every step of the rental process. Safety Tips

Start the Summer off Right - Memorial Day Safety Tips! N

ext weekend is Memorial Day Weekend. “Let’s all take part by being responsible for our self and others says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.” Here are a few safety tips: Travel Safety • Buckle up, slow down, don’t drive impaired. • Be well rested, alert and patient; give your full attention to the road. Do not text and drive! • Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive.

Water Safety Paddle Board? Jet Ski? It’s all harmless fun, right? Fun, certainly. But think before you play. Whatever the activity, observe these three cardinal rules: • Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. • Know local weather conditions. Make sure the water and weather conditions are safe. Let others know when you hit the water and when you plan to return! • Learn to swim. Do not swim alone or leave children unattended! Let someone know where and what time your leaving and intend on returning! Grill Safety This fun seasonal ritual has a flip side, though—namely, an onset of injuries and home fires due to careless cooking practices. Here are some tips you can follow to stay safe while enjoying those tasty treats at your cookout. • Never grill indoors or unattended – not in your house, camper, tent or any enclosed area. • Keep the grill out in the open, away from

Real estate timing must be both philosophically and psychologically right and for various reasons the timing for these folks to buy a home may never be right! But for the rest of us, once we have accomplished our initial goals the timing to buy a home must also be financially right. We must have a steady job or career with a decent and reliable income that does not require moving every other year, plus enough cash in savings to cover the down payment and closing costs associated with the purchase of a home. There are many people who either never achieve this level of financial stability in their lives or choose to live a more wanderlust lifestyle that keeps them from buying a home. But once again, for the rest of us, once we reach this level of financial stability the timing of the real estate market itself has to be right. Home prices have to be affordable; financing has to be available and there has to an adequate supply of homes for sale on the market. Timing, timing, timing! According to a Gallup poll 62% of Americans currently own their own home and according to J.P. Morgan Chase 87% of Americans say that homeownership is still one of their main goals in life. It is easy to see why since owning your own home can add stability, represents financial security, and gives you greater degree of control over your life when compared to renting your

Mind, body & Spirit

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Week of May 23

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman admitted that physicists can’t really define “energy,” let alone understand it. “We have no knowledge of what energy is,” he said. “We do not have a picture that energy comes in little blobs of a definite amount.” While it’s unlikely that in the coming weeks you Tauruses will advance the scientific understanding of energy, you will almost certainly boost your natural grasp of what energy feels like both inside and outside of your body. You will develop a more intuitive knack for how it ebbs and flows. You will discover useful tips about how to make it work for you rather than against you. You’re already a pretty smart animal, but soon you’ll get even smarter. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Giant Sequoias are the biggest trees on the planet. Many are more than 300 feet tall and 30 feet wide. Their longevity is legendary, too. They can live for 2,000 years. And yet their seeds are tiny. If you had a bag of 91,000 seeds, it would weigh one pound. I suspect there’s currently a resemblance between you and the Giant Sequoia, Gemini. You’re close to acquiring a small kernel that has the potential to grow into a strong and enduring creation. Do you know what I’m talking about? Identify it. Start nurturing it. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Don’t take yourself too seriously. The more willing you are to make fun of your problems, the greater the likelihood is that you will actually solve them. If you’re blithe and breezy and buoyant, you will be less of a magnet for suffering. To this end, say the following affirmations out loud. 1. “I’m willing to make the mistakes if someone else is willing to learn from them.” 2. “I’m sorry, but I’m not apologizing any more.” 3. “Suffering makes you deep. Travel makes you broad. I’d rather travel.” 4. “My commitment is to truth, not consistency.” 5. “The hell with enlightenment, I want to have a tantrum.” 6. “I stopped fighting my inner demons. We’re on the same side now.” LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Would you buy a stuffed bunny or a baby blanket that was handcrafted by a prisoner on death row? Would you go to a cafe and eat a sandwich that was made by an employee who was screaming angrily at another employee while he made your food? Would you wear a shirt that was sewn by a ten-year-old Bangladeshi girl who works 12 hours every day with a machine that could cut off her fingers if she makes one wrong move? Questions like these will be good for you to ask yourself, Leo. It’s important for you to evaluate the origins of all the things you welcome into your life -- and to make sure they are in alignment with your highest values and supportive of your well-being. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Having good posture tends to make you look alert and vigorous. More than that, it lowers stress levels in your tissues and facilitates the circulation of your bodily fluids. You can breathe better, too. In the coming weeks, I urge you to give yourself this blessing: the gift of good posture. I encourage you to bestow a host of other favors, too. Specialize in treating yourself with extra sweetness and compassion. Explore different ways to get excited, awaken your sense of wonder, and be in love with your life. If anyone calls you a self-involved narcissist, tell them you’re just doing what your astrologer prescribed. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The German word Fernweh can be translated as “wanderlust.” Its literal meaning is “farsickness,” or “an ache for the distance.” Another German word, Wandertrieb, may be rendered as “migratory instinct” or “passion to travel.” I suspect urges like these may be welling up in you right now. You could use a break from your familiar pleasures and the comforts you’ve been taking for granted. Moreover, you would attract an unexpected healing into your life by rambling off into the unknown. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): We call it “longing,” says poet Robert Haas, “because desire is full of endless distances.” In other words, you and the

object of your yearning may be worlds apart even though you are right next to each other. For that matter, there may be a vast expanse between you and a person you consider an intimate ally; your secret life and his or her secret life might be mysteries to each other. That’s the bad news, Scorpio. The good news is that you’re in a phase when you have extraordinary power to shrink the distances. Get closer! Call on your ingenuity and courage to do so. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Are you ready to go deeper, Sagittarius? In fact, would you be willing to go deeper and deeper and deeper? I foresee the possibility that you might benefit from diving in over your head. I suspect that the fear you feel as you dare to descend will be an acceptable trade-off for the educational thrills you will experience once you’re way down below. The darkness you encounter will be fertile, not evil. It will energize you, not deplete you. And if you’re worried that such a foray might feel claustrophobic, hear my prediction: In the long run it will enhance your freedom. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In the course of his 91 years on the planet, artist Pablo Picasso lived in many different houses, some of them rentals. When inspired by the sudden eruption of creative urges, he had no inhibitions about drawing and doodling on the white walls of those temporary dwellings. On one occasion, his landlord got upset. He ordered Picasso to pay him a penalty fee so that he could have the sketches painted over. Given the fact that Picasso ultimately became the best-selling artist of all time, that landlord may have wished he’d left the squiggles intact. In every way you can imagine, Capricorn, don’t be like that landlord in the coming week. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “I was often in love with something or someone,” wrote Polish poet Czesław Miłosz. “I would fall in love with a monkey made of rags. With a plywood squirrel. With a botanical atlas. With an oriole. With a ferret. With the forest one sees to the right when riding in a cart. With human beings whose names still move me.” Your task, Aquarius, is to experiment with his approach to love. Make it a fun game: See how often you can feel adoration for unexpected characters and creatures. Be infatuated with curious objects . . . with snarky Internet memes . . . with fleeting phenomena like storms and swirling flocks of birds and candy spilled on the floor. Your mission is to supercharge your lust for life. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Scientists in Brazil discovered a huge new body of water 13,000 feet beneath the Amazon River. It’s completely underground. Named the Hamza River, it moves quite slowly, and is technically more of an aquifer than a river. It’s almost as long as the Amazon, and much wider. In accordance with the astrological omens, Pisces, I’m making the Hamza River your symbol of the week. Use it to inspire you as you uncover hidden resources. Meditate on the possibility that you have within you a secret reservoir of vitality that lies beneath your well-known sources. See if you can tap into deep feelings that are so deep you’ve been barely conscious of them. ARIES (March 21-April 19): “I’m still learning,” said Michelangelo when he was 87 years old. For now, he’s your patron saint. With his unflagging curiosity as your inspiration, maybe your hunger for new teachings will bloom. You will register the fact that you don’t already know everything there is to know . . . you have not yet acquired all the skills you were born to master . . . you’re still in the early stages of exploring whole swaths of experience that will be important to you as you become the person you want to be. Even if you’re not enrolled in a formal school, it’s time to take your education to the next level. Homework: Write your ultimate personal ad. Address it to your current partner if you’re already paired. Share it at Freewillastrology.com. Rob Brezsny Free Will Astrology freewillastrology@freewillastrology.com

Receive The Celebrity Secret Of Permanent Cosmetic Make-Up

by Sunny Simon

New Age Glamour Life Lesson from a Swan W T Safely and Consistently Making the Desert Feel Beautiful One Face at a Time

Permanent makeup, also known as micro-pigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, can eliminate the daily hassle of applying makeup. Permanent cosmetics never run or smear, and are great for people with allergies to traditional cosmetics, as well as for those who have a difficult time applying makeup. I would have found this particularly valuable during the recent music festivals. Having to have my picture taken constantly, I could see the progression of my face melting as the warm days went on. This form of tattooing, in which pigment is implanted into the upper layer of the skin, can be applied using a variety of tattoo methods. According to Sheryle, it is important to know that your permanent makeup artist understands that this technique differs greatly from that of a typical tattoo artist. “Where a tattoo artist needs to go with deep, solid colors that stand out, permanent makeup must be done in layers, causing a blended natural look, enhancing the natural beauty of your features.” Considering that she has been doing this successfully, growing her satisfied

clientele since 1976, I would have to say, she knows what she’s talking about. Experienced technicians, like Sheryle, can create an extremely natural look with the proper application of permanent makeup. There are, however, risks associated with permanent makeup. Bleeding may occur during the tattooing procedure. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness of the treated area are common. Poorly sterilized tattooing equipment and/ or poorly performed procedures can lead to permanent problems – problems like infections including Hepatitis C. Aside from major health concerns, dissatisfaction is probably the largest risk factor associated with permanent makeup. Although there is some flexibility in changing the colors and shapes of permanent lip, eye, and eyebrow makeup, those considering permanent cosmetics must remember that the results are meant to last a lifetime. Sheryle Taffolla is recognized as one of the leading experts in permanent cosmetic makeup artistry as well as an instructor in the United States. She began her career as an electrologist. In 1988, she was certified to perform permanent makeup procedures and is now known as one of the pioneers in the permanent makeup industry. Since then, her business has served as the National headquarters for research for the American Institute of Permanent Color Technology. Sheryle has served as the President for the American Association of Permanent Color Technicians from 1990 – 1991 and lectured for the Society of Permanent Color Technicians, The American Institute, Dermouflage Institute and the Perma-Derm Academy. She is listed in the State of the Art Micropigmentation Book as a founder and expert in the field and featured in the Who’ Who of permanent makeup. The accolades, certifications and achievements go on and can be researched on the New Age Glamour website, along with testimonials from her very happy clients at newageglamour.com. It just makes sense, that if you are considering a permanent procedure, to consult a business and a business woman who, based on her high standards and outstanding reputation, has become a permanent fixture in the industry and in our desert. If there are any doubts, just make sure you take note of the larger than life, autographed photo of a well-known celebrity, displaying Sheryle’s artwork, who was recently shown in People Magazine. his morning I was sitting in my office gazing out the window. As my computer did its initial daily day boot-up, I watched one of the black swans who live on our lake glide out of view. Aesthetically these birds reign; however, they have other characteristics I admire. Swans mate for life. The adult male takes his role as father seriously. Protecting his mate and offspring is a priority. He will take over the nesting if something happens to the female. Swans do not overeat. They are efficient birds consuming only what they require. Efficiency is definitely a characteristic worth emulating. Technically, efficiency is a measureable concept…output to input. Efficiency is a time management skill many of us find challenging. It begins with knowing how to plan and prioritize. Many clients come to me in a panic about their lack of organizational skills. Complaints range from, “I have no time to myself.” to “I feel like I am on a perpetual treadmill.” A straightforward strategy for improving your output is planning your day. Sounds simple and yet, that is exactly where many individuals stumble. Make it a ritual! Experts at the Mayo Clinic list planning your day as the number one time management strategy

for combating stress. At a minimum, I recommend finding some quiet time at the end of each day to create a schedule for the following day. It is worth repeating…never begin your day with some vague idea of what you need to accomplish. Commit to getting things done with minutes and hours. I am talking about planning everything. Not just your workday, plan your play day, your physical fitness time, your trip to the dentist and outings with your family. Once you have mastered planning, learn to protect it. Certainly, there are times when you must accept an emergency assignment or appointment. Do the required calendar juggling, and then get back on track quickly. Sometimes an appeal is not an emergency, or it comes from someone who has no right to demand your time. Think it through, if the task does not align with your goals or fit into your day, politely decline. Get ruthless with time robbers like phone calls and unnecessary emails. Block out specific time on your schedule when you send your calls to voicemail. Sprinkle in time throughout the day to communicate with others. Like our role model, the swan, you can increase your efficiency and your output. No excuses. Start planning.

hen I entered the New Age Glamour office, I was struck by the clinical atmosphere immediately. I had assumed it would be set up more like a typical beauty salon. Owner Sheryle Taffolla greeted me in scrubs, further instilling the impression that our topic of conversation was going to be handled with a much higher level of expertise and professionalism than I had initially anticipated. This was not a stylist recommending color and cut, or even a makeup consultation. This was about a permanent procedure; a procedure that those who entrust themselves to Sheryle’s knowledgeable care, will live with, on their face, permanently. Sheryle Taffolla’s New Age Glamour is very likely this deserts most established permanent makeup studio. Based on her impressive background, long list of credentials, confidential but extremely famous client list and longevity in this industry, I felt I had come to the right place to investigate this quickly growing form of beauty enhancement.
