SUMMER 2016
Learning without Limits
Welcome
I can’t believe how fast the year has gone! This has been an incredibly busy time with many events & activities in addition to the ‘everyday’ teaching, learning & support provided by the staff. The Summer exams have gone well with year 11 students working hard over the last few months in preparation. They have been exemplary in the run up to exams & have shown the rest of the student body the core values needed to succeed – effort, commitment & focus. We are expecting a fantastic set of results in August. We said good bye to year 11 with a whole school assembly. There was a fantastic atmosphere with heartfelt words from the Heads of House & Mr Morrison. There was also a parting gift from Mr Morrison for year 11 – an ice cream van waiting for their orders! There have been a huge range of additional opportunities provided for the students involving all year groups. The following is a flavour of what has been happening since the Spring term: Poetry slam, UEA outreach Geography & PE, Sutton Scholars focusing on Science & higher education, CWA taster day, Alton Towers visit with Maths focus, Harry Potter trip & London experience, Skillsets career show in Peterborough, Venice trip, National Theatre Connections workshop, Norwich Playhouse, Restaurant experience, Norwich for KS4 catering, UEA mentoring & celebration for KS4, ‘Breakin’ Convention’ workshop with hip hop focus, GCSE Geography field trips, as well as numerous sport fixtures…. This really does show what is organised for students. Without the fantastic staff at KLA, these events would not happen & it is just one example of the dedication shown by all staff. At this time of year unfortunately members of staff do move on to new roles in different schools. This year we bid farewell to Mrs Gledhill, Miss Green, Ms Loco, Miss McNeil, Mr McCowen, Dr Okurut, Mrs Senaratne & Mrs Starling. On a personal note I have enjoyed working with them all & am certain they will be successful in their new roles. I would like to thank them on behalf of everyone at KLA & wish them all the best for the future. Finally, I would like to thank all students, staff, parents & governors for their support this year. I have really enjoyed my first year & look forward to a fantastic 2016-2017! Enjoy the Summer break.
Best wishes,
Barney Rimmer Head of School
Enterprise ] E T A D P [U I am delighted to report at the end of a great term, which has ended on a positive note celebrating the success of many students here at the academy. In developing enterprise skills as part of our rewards programme, students are given opportunities to show they have the right attitude and commitment to succeed. Well done to all students who received blazer badges this term, and there were some stunning nominations! Blazer Badges are evidence of skills and attitude to learning and I would encourage students to keep their blazer badge certificates and praise postcards. They excellent evidence to future employers of their skills and attitude to learning so would be great to take to job/college interviews. Below are a small selection of the blazer badge nominations awarded this term: Henry Pooley, Problem Solving Henry consistently completes challenging material in lessons, and always engages with extension materials. Henry shows a very good understanding in lessons, and is always capable of working on something independently, and working through solutions with little guidance from the teacher. The new GCSE specification is incorporating some material from A-Level, which Henry has so far taken in his stride. Millie Lines, Problem Solving Millie always wants to challenge and stretch herself in her Maths lessons, and is an excellent role model for all students. Millie always shows excellent subject knowledge, and enjoys working
on material which requires perseverance and problem solving skills. The new GCSE specification is incorporating some material from A-Level, which Millie has taken in her stride. Robyn Boughen, Determination Robyn has made an outstanding effort in Catering this term. She has shown determination and commitment and deserves success in the subject. iPad Mini Winner I am pleased to announce the iPad mini winner on the final day of half term was Shannon Cook, Year 7, Cresswell House! Well Done Shannon! Shannon has over 400 achievement points, and zero behaviour (negative) points! She has been in every Top 100 since starting at KLA in September! A truly epic achievement! Shannon is pictured with Head of School Mr Rimmer. Well done to all students for every sticker, praise postcard and blazer badge they have received! Keep up the good work everyone!

NATIONAL CAREERS WEEK This term, King’s Lynn Academy have celebrated National Careers Week by hosting assemblies and welcoming speakers to talk to students about Apprenticeships and Careers in Aerospace Engineering. The aim of National Careers Week is to provide a focus on careers guidance and activities to support young people in their future career choices. In bringing together students, local employers and advisers via Career Focused Assemblies and Day in the Life talks, Kings Lynn Academy students have learnt more about apprenticeships and engineering careers.
Over 200 Year 8 and 9 pupils heard from College of West Anglia (CWA) about the wide range of Apprenticeship opportunities, which provided students with a valuable insight into the world of apprenticeships, and the range of career paths they can lead to. Later that week, 30 Year 9 and 10 pupils heard from two representatives from BAE Systems, who spoke about engineering apprenticeships, and provided pupils with a valuable insight into the Aerospace Engineering industry. Day in the Life Speakers from BAE Systems were Charlotte Wilson, who is 24 years old and an Aircraft Engineer, along with Trevor Diack, Configuration Control Manager, both based at RAF Marham. Trevor and Charlotte explained that Maths and Science qualifications can open many doors in terms of
future careers. Charlotte, who works on the Tornado aircraft at RAF Marham, gave a firsthand account of the education path she took from school to the Apprenticeship, as well as articulating her views on any issues she has encountered being a woman in a maledominated engineering industry. Thank you to all the speakers who contributed to our National Career Week events. It was useful, informative and inspiring for students to hear from them. Speakers also enjoyed the events and were impressed with the way the students conducted themselves.
‘’I thoroughly enjoyed coming to Kings Lynn Academy. Students were enthusiastic, engaged and eager to listen which makes my job much easier. As an education ambassador for BAE Systems I try and make students aware of the options that they have to explore when it comes to finishing school and how many different pathways there are to obtain a career with BAE Systems. I whole heartedly support these type of events and I feel they were lacking when I was at school and the knowledge that pupils have access to now opens up so many options for them in the future. I commend King’s Lynn Academy for taking the time to organising these workshops and hope that it continues’’ Charlotte Wilson, Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, BAE Systems
‘’The workshop was very interesting, and I have learnt new things. They presented the workshop effectively and covered most of the questions I had. I feel more confident and knowledgeable after attending.’’ Ellen Mills, Year 10 ‘’I learnt about BAE Systems and a feel more confident after attending the workshop’’ Nathan Clarke, Year 9 ‘’I learnt a lot about future life opportunities and apprenticeships’’ Lewis Dixon, Year 9
‘’The students were fully engaged in discussing their subject choices and career opportunities, and having initially discussed with them the variety of careers they were interested in - which ranged from the RAF, Law and Engineering, we were asked some important questions by the students.’’ Trevor Diack, Configuration and Control Manager from BAE Systems
“With the huge variety of jobs and training opportunities currently available, it is more important than ever that students get as much advice and guidance possible, so they can make an educated and informed decision about their career direction. Apprenticeships are a great option for students who want to gain high level vocational qualifications which are recognised by industry and universities alike, while earning a wage.” Luke Byron, CWA

Attendance is currently at 91.5% for Nelson house and 94.6% for Vancouver house. This is an impressive rise for both houses although still not quite meeting the 95% expected, we will continue to monitor in the new school year. It has been a very busy term with visiting the primary schools for Y6 transitions and the Year 11 exams. This was my first year doing the Y6 visits and it has been a good experience, a lovely opportunity to meet our future students. All staff at KLA could not be more proud of the Year 11’s, they have showed a great attitude towards their exams. We wish you luck with your results and your future ventures. Many students have had the opportunity to go on various trips including a weekend in London whilst visiting Harry Potter World, Alton Towers and some more local destinations. All students had fun and I am sure will be looking forward to the next trip The Academy have had lots of fun with the Euro’s 2016, we have used the theme in many subjects and forms have been involved in a sweeps stake. Students had the chance to watch England’s matches if they were on during school times, the atmosphere was very lively and great fun to be a part of. Mrs Germaney - Head of Vancouver and Nelson House

We are at the end of another busy and successful year at the Academy. Our Year 11 students have completed their GCSE’S, enjoyed an assembly where they celebrated their achievements and finally dazzled us all at their Prom. They have been a credit to the Academy, their families and themselves. They have chosen many and varied paths to follow for the future from the Army, Further Education and Apprenticeships to name a few. I wish them all every success and happiness for the future. As they leave we eagerly await the arrival of our new Year 7 students in September which I have had the pleasure of meeting. A gentle reminder to make sure you continue to support our annual Macmillan Coffee Morning on September 30th. Thanks to Mrs Thomas this will be our fourth year of holding this. Numerous students have gained success both in and out of school. With their dedication and commitment to their chosen area of expertise I am sure they are the stars of the future. A special mention must go to Jake Langford who was awarded “Student of the Year” at the College of West Anglia after completing his engineering course. Well done to all students who have represented the Academy, won prizes, badges, awards, enjoyed pizza or have been nominated or selected as “Student of the Week”. Too many to name but I am very proud of you all. Team work is essential if we are going to achieve the best possible outcomes for our young people. I would like to wholeheartedly thank every member of the staff team, both support and teaching staff for their interest, their dedication and their hard work in striving to help our students fulfil their potential. I would also like to thank you as parents and carers for your continued support. I hope you have an enjoyable and sunny summer and look forward to working with you next year.

DIPLOMA AWARDS CEREMONY Staff, students and guests of the CWA Academy Trust gathered on Tuesday 12 July, to celebrate the dedication and achievements of year 7 and 8 students, at the first awards evening of its kind. Over 200 students from the CWA Academy Trust’s secondary phase academies - King’s Lynn Academy, King Edward VII Academy and Downham Market Academy - were invited to receive certificates for their hard work over the last academic year.
Certificates were awarded to those who completed the Diploma Champion scheme, designed to bring out the best in young people striving to reach their full potential whilst in education. Those in receipt of certificates were joined at the Alive Corn Exchange in King’s Lynn by the Mayor of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, Cllr David Whitby and his wife Linda, as well as members of the governing body and central trust for their attendance tonight.
Dr. Duncan Ramsey, Director of Education for the CWA Academy Trust, addressed the audience on the importance of celebrating the students’ achievements at evenings such as this. He said: “We believe that every young person has the right to be the best they can be, we do not set limits on how far our students can go in their learning and we want to celebrate that achievement. We hope that tonight is the first of an annual event to celebrate our pupils’ attainment. I would like to extend my gratitude to the teams at the academies for their hard work in preparation for this evening and for supporting the students throughout the year.”
Head Boy and Girl On 13th May 2016 the whole Academy voted for their Head Boy and Girl. The atmosphere in the Academy that day was fantastic, there was a real buzz about the place. There were four candidates; Edward Dew, Nathan Howard, Kaitlyn Senter and Livija Badeva. All four of them were absolute assets to the Academy, representing themselves really positively.
On the day all four students spent the morning visiting classes, appealing to them for votes. They also made sure that they spoke to all staff, who could vote too. They made short speeches about what they believe a Head Boy or Girl should do and why they would have been a good candidate. In the afternoon we had a whole school assembly at which the result was announced. There were huge
cheers for all of the candidates and the results were really close.
The 2016 winning candidates were Edward Dew and Kaitlyn Senter! Congratulations to them and we look forward to seeing their work over the next year.

SO LONG AND THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve even given one poor soul nightmares; but now, sadly, the time has come to say ‘that’s a wrap’. For the past five years, KLAFilmClub has been a labour of love for all involved, not least myself. I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of working with our talented young film makers
and will be deeply saddened when it’s time for the last one to leave to turn off the light. I’m not hugely fond of ‘Buzz Words’, but were I forced to use just a few, I could think of none finer than ‘enthusiastic’, ‘dedicated’, ‘creative’ and ‘inspirational’ to describe the students who have passed through our doors and trodden their own path along our red carpet.
This is not simply a case of boredom, of waning enthusiasm and dwindling numbers, nor are we like the band that have ‘made it’; unable to agree with each other now we’re ‘famous’, KLAFilmClub is unfortunately closing due to that trickiest of subjects, life. I have been offered a job elsewhere and as hard as it is to say goodbye to our club, it was simply ‘an offer I couldn’t refuse’. I would like to dedicate this final newsletter entry to everyone who has been involved in our club, it really has been both a mammoth undertaking and a roaring success and you have
been a part of that, no matter the size of your contribution. Particular thanks to IntoFilm for the amazing and tireless work that they do for the young people of the United Kingdom and Ireland; especially Rico, the greatest coordinator, if not the greatest singer, in the world but huge thanks and respect for agreeing to do it anyway! Finally, a thank you to King’s Lynn Academy itself for allowing me creative control over all aspects of FilmClub, I hope what we’ve achieved meets with approval.
So this is it, the last paragraph of what some people might consider the almost endless torrent of words that I have spoken and written whilst championing our FilmClub these past five years. I can’t quite bring myself to say goodbye so I’ll settle for au revoir. I know that this won’t be the end of the adventure for our members, or for me. You know why?

MATHS MASTERMIND
On Thursday 12th May 2016, King’s Lynn Academy hosted our annual Junior Maths Mastermind Challenge. This is a competition for year 4 and 5 pupils to show off their maths knowledge. The event saw competition between Reffley Community School, Howard Junior, Middleton VC Primary, West Winch Primary, and St German’s Primary. Each of the primary schools came along with their own supporters to make up the audience. With a combined total of 32 points, the overall Junior Maths Mastermind winners for the third year running were West Winch Primary School. MATHS MASTERMIND - CHARLIE LAKE TESTIMONIAL The testimonial was arranged to celebrate the fact that Charlie has won every “Inter-House” Maths Mastermind for his House within KLA, and every “Inter-School” Maths Mastermind representing KLA for all the 5 years he has been a student here at KLA. That in itself is no mean feat. A very fitting tribute to a pupil whose maths knowledge is outstanding and remarkable. The challenge saw Charlie compete ‘Head-to-Head’ against Mr Rimmer - KLA Head of School and Mr Essex KLA Head of Maths. After three exciting rounds against the clock, Charlie was crowned the undisputed ‘Maths Mastermind’ of KLA.
After three long weeks of heats, quarter-finals and semi-finals, 3rd May saw the long awaited final round of the Ultimate Form Challenge. The atmosphere was very tense and as the competition heated up, it was neck and neck for the first few rounds, and it was anybody’s game to win. V1 took the lead and then went on to take the crown. PROM
On Friday 1rd July we held our annual Year 11 Prom. This is the final event for our Year 11’s before they return in August for their GCSE results. An array of sports cars, limousines, luxury vehicles and even an ice cream van delivered our students to the academy in style. Stunning dresses and sharp suits were the order of the day. As ever, the crowds of well-wishers swelled with lots of former students coming back to see siblings and friends in their finery. The lovely Mrs Broughton also returned to see students arriving. After walking the red carpet, guests were welcomed into a transformed academy. Catering Manager Lorna Hutchison and her amazing team produced a delicious dinner of the highest standards, served by staff members to the 115 assembled guests. This year the academy canteen had an exceptional atmosphere, created by a ceiling made of lit up balloons – a real sight! After dinner Mr Morrison kicked off with the speeches. The awards - voted for by staff and students, were presented by the Prom Committee. With the formalities out of the way, the KLA Casino opened, with the opportunity of spending the Morrison Moola and Barney Bucks guests had been given on arrival. The disco was enjoyed by staff and students alike and dancing continued until the end of the evening. A very successful Prom was enjoyed by all and a fitting farewell to Class of 2016! The seminar time theme this term has been all about the Euro’s! Based on a literacy project surrounding Euro 2016 and the Battle of the Somme Centenary, students have been reading Tom Palmer’s live story; “Over the Line 2016”, and creating projects about a country represented in the football tournament. Running alongside this project are the KLA Olympics and a ‘Spot the Ball’ competition.
To enter the ‘Sport the Ball’ competition, students in years 7, 8, and 9 have to achieve 60% or higher in their accelerated reader quiz. Those who achieve 100% will be entered into a prize draw also. Students in year 10 can enter via a super numeracy challenge from Mrs Gledhill.
There are several prizes up for grabs, including a football shirt! If you wish to learn more about the Euro 2016 and the Battle of the Somme work, please visit: literacytrust.org.uk
YEAR 7 AND 10 CYCLING INTIATIVE For the past 6 weeks the Year 7 on a Monday morning have had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a cycling racing scheme. At school we are very keen to help pupils learn to live healthy lifestyles. Cycling is one of the easiest, cheapest and most enjoyable ways of keeping fit. That is why we have been incorporating the theme of cycling into our lessons this term to enable pupils to learn about the health and environmental benefits of cycling and the basics of cycling technique, road sense and bicycle maintenance. The programme was a nationwide scheme which aims to increase the number of young people cycling to school and on other journeys. Schools are selected for their enthusiasm for cycling and the potential to increase cycling. The programme ended with a Cycling Race against KES where many of our students gained individual and team successes.
KLA RIDE TO VICTORY IN CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The KLA u12 Cycling Team took part in the second annual Cycling Championships held at KLA on Monday. The event, organised by Alison and Lee from British Cycling, was a head to head competition between KLA and KES. The students, at both academies, have been learning cycling racing skills throughout this half term as cycling was once again added to the key stage three curriculum. The event comprised of a sprint circuit and a more demanding mountain bike course, both set up within the grounds of KLA. A massive thank you is offered to Alison and Lee, not only for their efforts with our students throughout this half term, but also for organising a great event. KLA entered a boys and a girls team and all students raced well. Points were available for every riders finishing position and added together to determine individual and team winners. Both the KLA teams were successful with the boys and girls winning both overall team events. KLA students also celebrated individual victories with Haydn Taylor claiming 3rd, Oliver Archer 2nd and Lewis Case 1st in the boys competition and Abigail Mason taking 3rd spot, Chloe Robinson 2nd and Leah-Molly Summers 1st in the girls competition.
U12 FOOTBALL TEAM WIN THE WEST-NORFOLK LEAGUE
It was officially announced this week that KLA’s u12 football team have been crowned West-Norfolk League Champions. The team, with a 100% win record in the league, added this achievement to their early season success when they won the West-Norfolk Indoor 5-a-side Championships. The team, comprising of Thomas Beeby, Louie Younge, George Pooley, Harry Appleton, Ryan Smith, Joe McNulty, Lewis Case, Charlie Cullen, Josh Andrews, Maksims Prohorovs, Alfie Harvey, Joshua Stone and Ryan Batten scored a total of 25 goals during the season and conceded only 1. The team beat Downham Market 9-0, Litcham 7-0, Hammonds 4-0 and secured the league with a 5-1 win against KES. The team will now begin next season with a one off cup final vs Springwood, winners of their league, in the Peter Plowright Cup. The team have not only played some exciting football and showed large amounts of quality all over the pitch, but also conducted themselves impeccably throughout the season. The PE department are very proud of the boys and are excited to see what next season will bring.
ROUNDERS
It has been a busy summer term for the girls Rounders teams. KLA entered the West Norfolk Rounders U12, U13, U14 and U15 leagues. The season has been a positive experience for the girls with some great results from the Year 8 and 9 teams. We have three games left in the season and hoping for some more wins.
ATHLETICS
On Thursday 26th May, KLA selected girls and boys from years 7, 8, 9 and 10 to take part in the West Norfolk Athletics Competition at LynnSport. The event took place from 1:00 – 6:00pm. The event was a great success and an enjoyable experience for all students to be able to compete in their chosen event. We had some fantastic individual achievements, where these students will be selected to represent the West on Tuesday 22nd June at the Norfolk Athletics Competition at UEA Sports Park. Well done to all the students that took part in both days and represented their school or West.
CLUBS KLA PE run a wide variety of extracurricular clubs offering several different sports for students to participate in. For details on the available activities, please check the ExtraCurricular page on our website.
As another academic year draws to a close, we wish the Year 11’s well as they move onto new challenges and look forward to welcoming the Year 7’s in September, hopefully meeting many of them at the summer school. This last year we have delivered all the Norfolk Constabulary key messages, as well as having assembly inputs when local policing issues needed addressing, (e.g. Cycling matters, areas of Anti-social behaviour, issues around waterways). Talking of waterways, if we get (fingers crossed) a hot sunny summer please remind your child that although jumping into bodies of water, be it lakes or rivers, may seem fun it can be incredibly dangerous if you don’t know what is immediately below the surface. We want to continue to help you in keeping your child safe, not only in the real world but the online one too.
Safer Schools
Update
The holidays will provide lots of time for your child to be out and about with friends as well as being home on devices that access the internet. In both of these situations just ask yourselves the following WWW’s. WHAT are they doing, WHO are they with, WHERE are they going. Three valid questions for the online world and the real one. Have a great summer. Pc John Bolderstone & Pcso Jon Cockerill
