Early days Skiing has always been a part of Crested Butte. In the early mining days, the 1880’s, everyone had to ski. It was a mode of transportation. According to local historian Duane Vandenbusche in his book The Gunnison Country, during the winter of 1880-81, skiing for sport became popular in the mining camps. “Several of the camps hosted races on weekends, attended by hundreds of spectators. The courses were usually a third to a half-mile straight down a mountainside. In those early days, the miners knew nothing of jumping or cross-country contests, writes Vandenbusche. By 1886, the area was famous across the state and the country for its skiing. And by all accounts it was extreme.

Legend and logic behind Crested Butte Mountain’s trail names By Mike Horn

loresta. Twister. Paradise Bowl. How did Crested Butte 0RXQWDLQ FRPH XS ZLWK DOO WKH official (and unofficial) trail names that guide skiers and riders from line to line? )URP WKH VRXQGV RI LW PDQ\ of the early trails on the mountain were born from cocktail-party conversations, plucked from the area’s mining history, and used as a means of honoring mountain employees. Ski patrollers predominantly named the extreme limits runs, as do locals who to this day create various names for this tree shot and that pillow line. Roark Kiklevich, Crested %XWWH 0RXQWDLQ 5HVRUW¡V 0RXQWDLQ Planner, came to Crested Butte in 1971 and started ski patrolling in 1973/74. He said many of the trail names were influenced by the area’s mining culture and history. A slew of trail names, including %XFNOH\ &U\VWDO )ORUHVWD -RNHUYLOOH .H\VWRQH )RUHVW 4XHHQ DQG Ruby Chief carried over from local PLQHV /LNHZLVH WKH 6LOYHU 4XHHQ *ROG /LQN DQG 3DLQWHU %R\ OLIWV reflect mining’s influence.
And sometimes, a name is just a name. “It got to where we had 100-plus trails, and we had to name them something other than Trails 1, 2, and 3, Kiklevich said, laughing. But there are some compelling stories behind many other slopes. When it comes down to it, sometimes the names have creative, interesting stories behind them—and sometimes they don’t. )RU WKH PRVW SDUW WKHVH VWRULHV aren’t written down anywhere, but get passed on by word of mouth. How to Rob a Bank, the latest release from esteemed guitarist/singer-songwriter Willy Porter, showcases his continued growth as a songwriter and recording artist. Porter offers a rich blend of salt and sugar with tracks that move easily from rough-hewn electric edges into soulful irony with equal aplomb. Having toured with artists as diverse as Jeff Beck Willy Porter and Tori Amos, Porter capitalizes on his experiences as a seasoned live performer and each song is a fresh cross-pollination of styles, genres and musical forms.
