Entries are now open for the 2023 NetWaste Waste2Art competition, which challenges artists of all ages and abilities to repurpose ‘waste’ items into fantastic works of art.
This year’s theme, Textiles and Fast Fashion, is aimed at getting people thinking about the effects of the disposable fashion trend and the impacts it has on our environment.

Coordinating our local Waste2Art competition is Orange Library’s Monica Engel who’s excited to get people involved.


“If you’re interested, start thinking about what you’re going to make. And have a look in your cupboards, it’s surprising what you can find that you can use to make something beautiful,” Monica said.
Monica believes the competition can alter the way people perceive waste, and particularly our relationship to fashion, given the theme this year.
“It’s about understanding not only the problems, but also the solutions to waste,” she said.
The Waste2Art competition is open to anyone and categories include: 2-Dimensional (poster/painting/collage/drawing), 3-Dimensional (sculpture/ installation), and functional (furniture/craftworks and wearable objects).
“Established artists are welcome to enter, but we do get a lot of amateur artists entering, and in the past some of those artists have gone on to make a name for themselves,” Monica said.
“What we’re looking for is something conceptual – the ideas coming through of the waste problem, or the solution.”
Entry is free and must be submitted to the library by Wednesday, May 31.
The exhibition will run from June 19 - June 30 at the Orange library, with judging taking place in the first week and winners announced at the official exhibition opening on Friday, June 23.

All of the winning artworks from each local competition will be transported to a Regional Exhibition.

Orange City Library is also hosting a number of Sewing Maker Space Workshops, to give you inspiration and new skills to tackle a Waste2Art project of your own. They will be held at the library on May 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 4-6pm. Bookings are essential and can be made at eventbrite.com or Orange City Library 6393 8132.
