INSIGHT Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12

Isaiah 49:1–6

Isaiah’s link to Jesus The book of Isaiah has been so influential in shaping the New Testament’s witness to Jesus that from the early days of the Church it has been dubbed the ‘fifth gospel’. The ministry of Jesus is best seen as the long-awaited end of exile, with the announcement of forgiveness and the day of grace. This is confirmed by the way in which Isaiah is plundered by the Evangelists to define the ‘gospel’.

‘But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.’ (53:5)

‘I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.’ (v.6)

Paths of Peace Beryl Adamsbaum Isaiah 50:4–11 Isaiah 42:1–4 ‘Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations.’ (v.1)

‘Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.’ (v.7)
