Denzil’s

Easter garden

Something’s wrong.

Denzil looked through his kitchen window with a worried frown. ‘No doubt about it, something’s VERY wrong.’ Last spring, Philippa had helped Denzil to plant his garden. They’d dug the earth and sown some seeds. They’d made a deep hole and planted a small tree. Then day by day the weather got warmer and the sky became brighter. The flowers bloomed. The vegetables grew. The tree sprouted pink blossom and pale green leaves. Denzil’s new garden looked magnificent all summer long. ‘And if you take care of it,’ Philippa had told him, ‘it’ll stay beautiful.’

But now summer was over and autumn had arrived. The weather was getting colder again. The days were growing darker. And when Denzil peered through his kitchen window, his garden just didn’t look the same. There were no more flowers or vegetables. The leaves on the tree had turned brown and crinkly. Some had even fallen off. They lay still on the damp grass. ‘Oh, no!’ Denzil groaned. ‘Oh, dear!’ he worried. ‘The garden Philippa helped me to plant is dying. She’ll think I haven’t been taking care of it. She’ll be SO upset.’
