Come and celebrate your inner animal with these groovy geezers UNGLE Fever is the theme of Geezer Rage 2016, hosted by Geezer Events and Plett’s Baia Formosa Lions Club, and it promises to be a shindig of note while raising funds for the essential work done by the full range of Bitou’s neighbourhood watch groups, as well as that of the Plett NSRI volunteer crew. The party starts at 6pm on Saturday July 30 at LM in Plett, and tickets priced at R180 per head include dinner at LM as well as entrance into Zanzibar up the road. Says Shelley Ochse of the Lions organising committee: “Sam Hartman will be playing at LM in Plett while everyone gets warmed up with delicious curries and soups, complemented by a Bonnievale Cellars wine tasting. “And be sure not to miss our special surprise from Big Circle Entertainment before we head up to Zanzibar en masse!” To start the night off at this popular Plett CBD venue, DJ Malcolm will open the dance floor at 8pm, followed by the

Plett Food Film Festival 2016 dazzles! HE third Plett Food Film Festival that ran over three days from Monday July 11 to Wednesday the 13th served up a dazzling array of fine food and fare, celebrity appearances, music, poetry, dancing and cinematography, at The White House in Plett CBD and at Emily Moon River Lodge off Rietvlei Road. The opening evening saw Karen Dudley - a guest of the festival on previous occasions - give one of her inimitable demonstrations on putting together a meal guaranteed to stimulate the taste buds of the most jaded palate. This was followed by the screening of a motion picture entitled Les Emotifs Anonymes (Emotions Anonymous), the story line of which portrayed the paths of two persons of highly emotional disposition, both engaged in the manufacture of chocolate, slowly but surely falling in love, in a most

T

awkward and diffident manner. Afterwards, a sumptuous spread of chocolate-based foods delighted the lively crowd in attendance. The second evening featured the hugely popular South African YouTube sensation, Suzelle DIY, who gave a hilarious sendup of what needs to be done to prepare for a successful dinner party. After quizzing her audience on the appropriate preparatory work, to which the replies of good wine and food were refuted with an abrupt “Nah décor” (pronounced “day-kaw” in Suzelle-speak), she proceeded to show how ordinary bottles could be made into elegant vases and pastry turned into fork-shaped canapés (pronounced “can-naps”), and sharing her recipe for homemade champagne (pronounced “shum-pain”). The night’s featured movie was A Good Year - a beautifully

filmed tale woven around the fruit of the vine, nostalgia, and the magic of love. Scene after scene juxtaposed the frenetic hurly-burly of London’s financial Square Mile trading floors with the serenity of a French château and vineyard. Throughout the evening a number of Bitou estates offered wine tastings paired with delicious snacks and treats from several local eateries and purveyors of fine food. The final evening of the festival was an all Mexican affair held at Emily Moon, overlooking the meanders of the beautiful Bitou River. After a welcoming margarita - a cocktail based on Tequila - those attending settled down to watch Like Water for Chocolate. Set in Mexico in the early years of the 20th century, the film has a sub-text of culinary excellence, sensuality, raw emotion and unrequited love that veered between the anodyne

famous radio personality cum tunes spinner supreme Mad Brad, who’s sure to get Ragers revelling in his particular selection of shake, rock n roll from 10pm till late. Loads of amazing prizes, lucky draws, and raffles will complete the wide range of Geezer Rage offerings, but take note: you’re expected to come dressed as your inner animal, and obliged to party like there’s no tomorrow. It’s for a good cause, capisce? “Monies raised will be allocated to much needed equipment for all our various neighbourhood watches,” says Shelley. “These folks volunteer their services and drive around at all hours of the night in a bid to keep us safe at home, and your contribution will aid them in doing these night patrols more effectively and with the right equipment.” Tickets can be purchased from any Baia Formosa Lions representative, or online from Quicket, and you can call Shirley on 081 052 4877 or Michelle on 082 739 0557 for additional information.

and the sublime. Two hours of cinematic engagement was rewarded with a magnificent feast of an array of Mexican dishes such that attendees were spoilt for choice. The evening concluded with the music of Latino trio Los Gitanos and the pounding steps of a flamenco dancer. Many people from other parts of the country travelled to Plett to partake of the Plett Food Film Festival and an aggregate total of 440 people attended over the three nights. Plett Tourism head Peter Wallington, Cindy WilsonTrollip, and their staff are to be thanked and commended for the hard work and diligence required to organise a festival of such diversity and quality. Know your neighbours, know your street to ensure a safer town Plettenberg Bay crime fighters were out in full force on Friday in an attempt to deter criminals by creating a larger presence in the different communities - YOLANDÉ STANDER reports OCAL neighbourhood watch group Plett Watch invited residents and the press to join them on a patrol on Friday night from about 10pm. Spokesman for the group Wesley Andrew said Plett Watch did a joint patrol with various other crime fighting bodies including police, Bitou Law Enforcement and Traffic, and several local security companies. About 30 residents showed up and patrolled the streets of Plett for a few hours. “Even before the official start of the operations we were called out to a home where the occupants heard something on their roof, which showed patrollers how things worked.” The Plett Watch response team gives freely of their time to respond to any suspicious activity in and around Plett.

L

There were, however, no major incidents during the operations, other than drunk or disorderly individuals being removed from certain areas. “This shows that our efforts are working. Just being out there is a major deterrent for criminals. They don’t want to be caught, so we are making it difficult for them by being alert and being present in the various neighbourhoods in Plett,” Andrew said. While he encouraged residents to join Plett Watch and participate in patrols, he added that not everyone had to give up several hours every week to do so. “Just by knowing your own street, knowing your neighbours and so on already make a difference. “When you are making your way home from work and notice something

amiss, or notice someone who shouldn’t be in the area - report it. This is how we ensure our town is safe.” He added that they hoped to do similar operations at least once a month and encouraged residents to join them next time. “It exposes residents to what we are doing out there while everyone is sleeping.” Running a successful Plett Watch is costly, however, especially having the necessary equipment to get the job done. That is why Geezer Events, organisers of the Geezer Rage on July 30, decided to donate proceeds of this year’s event to Plett Watch. The money will go towards purchasing good safety gear and torches for the volunteers and perhaps even putting up cameras in certain hotspot areas. (See the story on page 2.)

A visitor’s praise for Plettenberg Bay’s security force joint efforts DR TRUDIE BASSON from Port Elizabeth wrote the letter below to Plett Security after a recent smash and grab incident EREBY we want to thank your staff members for their wonderful support, help and intervention today. We were three ladies (my 80-year-old mother, my daughter and myself) from Port Elizabeth visiting the historical Timber Shed site in Meeding Street this afternoon. It was a very big shock to discover with our return to the vehicle that someone had smashed the passenger’s window and that the camera bag with valuables hidden under the car seat had been stolen along with a purse with all the medical, bank and personal cards.

H

We were informed by three passers-by that they saw the criminal and gave a description of what he was wearing. From that moment, we experienced wonderful teamwork from staff members of Plett Security, Plett Watch, Bitou Law Enforcement and the SAPS (Bitou Public Safety Commander Andile Sakati, MLE Officer Siya Vandala, Constable Ntikitiki, Constable Stokvels, and the Plett Security Team of Otto & Waldo Olivier and Lucas Mans, Jarod Harding and Curtis Higgs). They did not waste time and followed the leads. While we were waiting at

the site of the break-in, the above mentioned team was in full action to trace and catch the criminal. We were informed that it was your men who outran the criminal and brought him to the police station. They even got all the stolen items back, except for the cash. We have a lot of praise for what your firm did. We thank God for all of you and for the important work you do to protect us. • Email otto@plettsecurity.co.za or call 076 061 1379, or the Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention all-hours number 082 251 8134 to report criminal activities in Bitou.

DA leader dances with the people of Knysna NYSNA Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate, Eleanore BouwSpies welcomed DA leader, Mmusi Maimane to Knysna on Wednesday July 13, the visit forming part of his Garden Route campaign. Bouw-Spies extended a warm welcome to, as she put it, “the leader of our new project for democracy, Mmusi Maimane”. She also welcomed roleplayers within the Greater

K

Knysna community and business leaders. During the breakfast held at Hornlee Community Hall, Bouw-Spies discussed the upcoming municipal election. “This will be a very closely contested election, probably the closest in our young democracy. With great upheaval as we have witnessed within the ANC, comes great opportunity for the DA. “I want to stress that this

also brings immense responsibility to deliver on the vision of 1994. We had great architects who gave us a constitution as a blueprint that the current ruling party has failed to follow. In fact, that plan is being torn to shreds with every court order they ignore.” Maimane concurred with Bouw-Spies and added that the August 3 elections are probably the most important faced by this country.

“I am very hopeful for South Africa and believe that the DA is the only party that is truly carrying forward Nelson Mandela’s dream of ‘One South Africa for all’. He beseeched all present to work hard, as “we have a country to contest for”. He further said that the time to make political choices based on race is long past. His audience was delighted when he referred to his family as truly South African. “On the outside we are different from each other; even our children are different from us. But remove race from the equation, and we’re not very different.” With reference to the diversity of DA members, Maimane smiled and said the DA is the only party that can sing the entire national anthem. From Knysna Maimane travelled to Plett before departing to address supporters in Port Elizabeth.

String of child sex suspects due in dock EVERAL high-profile Garden Route court cases involving sex crimes against children are set to be heard over the next week. First to take his place in the dock on Thursday is the 83-year-old grandfather from The Crags, who allegedly raped a nine-year-old girl last year. The matter is set to be transferred from Plett Magistrate’s Court to Knysna Regional Court. The man, who cannot be named until he has pleaded, is accused of raping the little girl just before Christmas last year after calling her to a flatlet he was renting from the child’s grandparents. During his bail hearing in February the court heard he allegedly admitted to police that he had raped the girl after she undressed herself and went to sit on his bed, and did it because he “was just a man”.

However, when testifying in his bail hearing, he denied any wrongdoing. He was subsequently released on R1,000. Four days later, on July 25, George dentist Ian Venter, who recently pleaded not guilty, is to appear in Thembalethu Regional Court on a second string of charges relating to sex crimes. Venter is accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old boy during a sleepover at his Herold’s Bay home - this after the 44-year-old father of three was sentenced in December 2014 to four years under house arrest following his conviction on several charges including sex with a minor boy. He is currently out on R5,000 bail. The next day, a 21-yearold man who allegedly sexually assaulted girls as young as nine earlier this year, is set to appear in Plett

Magistrate’s Court. The man allegedly lured three girls aged nine, 10 and 11 away from a dam where they were swimming in Ladywood on the outskirts of the town, before sexually assaulting them. One of the girls claims she became frightened and managed to run away, while one of the boys who had swum with them raised the alarm. The boy told one of the girls’ mothers, who in turn contacted police. After his arrest in February the man was released on warning. On July 28, the trail against a prominent Plett teacher, who cannot be named until he has pleaded, is set to start in Knysna Regional Court. He was arrested on June 22 last year after claims surfaced that he allegedly sexually abused a 10-year-old boy in his class. - Yolandé Stander

Three decades of active service celebrated EMBERS of the Rotary Club of Plettenberg Bay and its Rotary Anns recently celebrated their 30th anniversary in style at The Med Seafood Bistro at Bayview Hotel, where Marianne Mould and the Med team ensured that everyone present was plied with their particular brand of delectable eats. Says spokesman Philip Murton: “At the same time, we celebrated the induction of Patrick Leary as our club’s new president for 2016/17. Beryl Winter continues to serve as Rotary Anns president for a fourth successive year, but rumour has it that she would really, truly, absolutely like to make this her final year as first in charge of our Anns.” During the celebration, the Anns made three awards for community service, the deserving recipients being Di Butlin, Edna Light and Roger Davis. Two Rotarians also received community service awards.

Likewise, an award was given to Rotarian Ruby Chetty for her tireless efforts in assisting the local community - and these awards are not given lightly,” adds Murton. The Rotary Club and the Rotary Anns have been active in the Bay for three decades and, if they had their way, would like to be doing

their good work here in another 30 years. But this depends upon getting a steady inflow of new members. This is why you need to know the ins and outs of your banking fees NE of the most important things for consumers to consider when reviewing their bank account fees is whether they have the right account for the way they transact. “Your bank account should be considered a partner, and choosing the right partner for your lifestyle will go a long way in avoiding frustration, unnecessary costs and wasting time,” says Ryan Prozesky, CEO of Value Banking Solutions at FNB.

O

Monthly account fees When reviewing the fees you pay on your bank account, the focus should not be solely on the actual monthly account fee but rather on what you can do for that fee and the inclusive value offered. “If you have basic requirements, then an account with a very low monthly fee and a pay-as-you-use structure will probably be the most cost effective,” says Prozesky. However, if you use your account more frequently it is wise to choose an account that offers a transaction bundle to best suit your transactional needs. A bundle option will allow you to perform multiple or

unlimited transactions without incurring extra costs. High-fee transactions to avoid Cash is expensive due to the transport costs, additional security and associated insurance costs. The best thing to do with your cash is to deposit it at an ATM that allows deposits, but ideally you should get the funds deposited electronically into your account. Some of FNB’s accounts offer free deposits up to a certain amount on a monthly basis. “A good alternative to using cash is to swipe your debit card. Not only is swiping a safer option than carrying cash, but often it does not attract any transaction fees,” states Prozesky. If you absolutely need cash, some banks have an agreement with certain retailers to make free withdrawals at the till. Benefits of electronic banking Banking electronically is more convenient, cheaper, and can be done anywhere at any time. Apps, in particular, have become essential as they allow you to bank using your smartphone or other electronic devices. Using electronic plat-

forms is cheaper for a bank to administer, which means that the bank can pass on the saving to the customer. The majority of transactions can now be done on these electronic channels, such as looking up balances, drawing a mini statement, pre-paid transactions and making payments. Savings accounts A savings account is a valuable tool to help make your money grow. This type of account generally has a good interest rate with no monthly fee, and should ideally be separate to your transactional account. This eliminates the temptation to spend savings while making daily transactions. There are various savings accounts to choose from and the deciding factors on which type will be what you need your savings account for. There is no such thing as small change; every cent counts. Rewards on bank accounts Most bank accounts come with some type of value-add or reward. These rewards are used by banks to incentivise and reward customers to continue banking with them, as

well as banking in a cost effective manner. Looking into and taking full advantage of these benefits is worth your while. There are different rewards structures as well. Some accounts will reward you in loyalty points which are accumulated and can be used to purchase goods, while others will give you cash. Make sure that the rewards system and value-adds really work for you and your lifestyle. If you understand the rewards programme and use your bank account efficiently, you will be able to not just save money, but also actually get back more than you pay in bank fees. Finally, aside from the actual banking fees, it is also worth looking at how your bank account can fit into your lifestyle. Do you need access to credit such as home financing or start up a business one day, or access to a mobile money service to send money to someone without a bank account? “In the end, your bank account should fit comfortably into your lifestyle and offer you services that add value and are cost effective,” concludes Prozesky.

‘Many shop and business owners in Plett CBD had to make do without electricity during the early evening of Friday July 1, due to a Telkom contractor ripping high voltage cable near the post office and police station in the late afternoon. Apparently the contractor mistook the already exposed streetlight cable for high voltage cable, but a blue high voltage flash from the bent cable pictured here was responsible for stopping all the work. A fault-finding mission was launched and three substations checked, and once the problem was isolated, electric power could be restored.’ - Christo Vlok

Giant aliens felled at Marsh Haven Manoj Bhika shared this pic and wrote: ‘Six alien bluegum giants were taken down in three days at Marsh Haven on Rietvlei Road with much skill by what we suspect was a team of provincial fellers. This photo shows one of the riggers tackling the biggest of them all, a colossus of about 40m tall, at dawn on July 6.’ Photo: Lyndall Leggat

Help Knysna mom cum agent Ursula get Ishaad on the 7s rugby plane to Mauritius BLITZ BACK: Ishaad Snyman started playing rugby at Knysna Primary and now, in his final year at Outeniqua High, has been selected as part of the school’s 7s team who will tour to Mauritius in October - IF the R25K required can be raised

SHAAD Snyman was completely unaware of his natural talent for rugby when his now fast-cruising career started as Grade 4 leaner at Knysna Primary. “At the time, I played in the Under-11B team, and by Grade 6 I had progressed to the Under-13B squad.

I

In my Grade 7 year, with the guidance of our school coaches, I successfully secured my place as fullback in the Knysna Primary Under-13A side,” says Ishaad. When it was time for high school, Ishaad went to Outeniqua in George where he actively pursued

his rugby dreams - and now in his final year, this focus is stronger than ever before. “During Grade 11, I represented the B teams in my age group. I decided to put more work into my rugby career, and now I have gained the size and much more confidence.

“I made my debut in the first team this year, the highlight being that I scored my first try for the Outeniqua First 15 during this game.” Ishaad was soon spotted by the school’s 7s rugby coach, who approached him after an inter-schools to offer him a spot in a 12-man

7s squad heading off to Mauritius to participate in the island’s annual 7s tournament, presented by Vision Sports-Mauritius during the coming October holidays. “I see this as a great opportunity that will definitely make a huge impact on my rugby career, as this tournament invariably opens doors for young players like myself. So it really is the opportunity of a lifetime, and the best exposure any young player could dream of.” The only hurdle now is for Ishaad’s family to raise the R25,000+ required from each player, and here’s where readers could chip in to contribute in a significant way to the sporting future of a Knysna youngster showing every sign that he will go far if given half a chance.

Mom Ursula Titus invites anyone in a position to assist Ishaad to contact her on 072 217 1390. Alternatively, donations can be paid into his bank account at Nedbank Knysna (branch 108914), account number 108 17 511 69. “He really hopes to represent his school, Outeniqua High, in Mauritius while at the same time flying the flag high for his hometown of Knysna,” says Ursula. “My mom is my agent at the moment, ha-ha,” jokes Ishaad, concluding that she would gladly share any information required by prospective donors. Call 044 874 4188 or visit www. outeniqua.co.za to find out more about the school and its glorious history of 7s rugby in Mauritius.

Plett Athletics Club hosted a fun 6.7km family beach run or walk on Sunday, from its hub at Plett Ski Boat Club on Central Beach. The sun was shining, the tide low, the sky blue and the sea glistening - a perfect Plett morning for the 72 runners and walkers who headed along the beach at their preferred pace each. Breakfast, coffee and juice were included in the registration price of R67, which proved a great way to get everyone together and sated in the sunshine. Kids from a local shelter joined the run and stayed for breakfast, and proceeds from the event will be donated to the shelter.
