MERIDA BIKES 2012

Jose Hermida became World Cross Country Champion in 2010 on his Merida 0.Nine. A pinnacle in the ever popular Spaniards career, and yet another trophy for the Multivan Merida Biking Team. The Multivan Merida Biking Team have been dominant in the World of Cross Country racing since 2004, and their demands for the best equipment drive the R&D team at Merida to come up with ever more advanced bikes. The philosophy of Merida has always been that the customer can buy what the team rides, and this year the team has two new weapons, the Big Nine a 29 wheel super lightweight hardtail and the Ninety Nine, an all new lightweight full suspension bike. The road side sees some exciting developments with affordable electronic shifting available from Shimano Ultegra Di2, which features on our Scultura and Reacto models, bringing technology previously reserved for teams and the super rich to the masses. Whatever kind of riding you are into, there will be something for you. All with the reassurance they are made by one of the worlds leading manufacturers with almost 40 years of manufacturing experience and some of the most advanced production techniques available. The following pages give you an insight into just what goes into your new Merida bike.

Juergen Falke (m.), Merida's Head of Design, coordinates the teamwork.

Research & Development

Developed in Germany In the german town of Magstadt, engineers and designers work together closely to transform ideas into perfect MERIDA bikes.

Only the art of frame construction once distinguished good bikes from very good ones. But those times are long gone: Cutting-edge processes for well-proven materials (e. g. aluminium) or the specific characteristics of sensitive base materials (e. g. carbon) require maximum attention when new bikes are designed today. Geometric adaption and the kinematic complexity have turned bike development into a real science. Because bikes are no longer just bikes: They are the results of many technological and construction factors whose grand total guarantees that a bike fulfils exactly the purpose it was designed for – provided that the concept is well thought-out. That’s why the designers and developers at our R&D headquarters in the German town of Magstadt work together closely so good ideas become perfect Merida bikes. Our R&D experts aim from the outset is the creation of products that delight our customers with solid reliability and great performance for many years – no matter if they are working on bikes for kids, trekking models or high-tech bikes like our MTBs of World Cup fame.

In this context, Merida’s distribution in more than 70 countries brings immense advantages: Around the world, our marketing and distribution experts hunt for current trends, keep close contact with leading international bike magazines and monitor the development of all important global markets. Their input is one of the factors that help the chassis engineers, designers and programmers of Merida’s R&D team to define the specification sheet of each bike for the new season. During the initial concept discussions, all engineers, designers and technical specialists resolve basic questions concerning frame material and the application of the bike-to-be. Necessary clearances like tire widths or the disc brake’s rotor size are decided. With a firm brief, the first computer studies are compiled. This early stage involves cutting-edge engineering tools like “Igorion” (suspension software for chassis optimization) or “ProE” (3D all-solid simulation). After the computer study is completed aluminium prototypes are welded according to this specification – and then checked in reality, by the world’s fastest test riders: The pro athletes of our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM.

Great cooperation: Juergen Falke and MULTIVAN MERIDA pro rider Ralph Naef (r.) test a prototype on Majorca.

Pre-Production check

Tested by pro riders The MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM riders give invaluable feedback during the development of new bikes. Every MERIDA therefore benefits from their comprehensive knowledge and their international successes.

Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå, Hannes Genze, José Antonio Hermida, Rudi van Houts, Jochen Kaess, Andreas Kugler and Ralph Naef – no other elite pro MTB team comes back from the planet’s race courses with more success and experience than the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM. Olympic Gold and Silver, World, Europe and National Championship triumphs, Overall World Cup victory… this team has already achieved everything that pro riders around the globe are working hard for during every season. But to Merida, these top-class athletes mean much more than guarantors for racing success: They are an invaluable source for feedback on the development of new bikes. As soon as the R&D engineers have finished their first workings, the new model exists as a welded aluminium prototype. This development mule is equipped with current season’s components and is a world away from the future production version. At this point, weight and visual appearance don’t matter – these aspects are discussed later. Instead, the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM pro riders and Juergen Falke as Merida’s Head of Design go about a very first practical test of the new development’s geometry and chassis kinematics. In doing so, the sensible “backside meters” of Ralph Naef and colleagues detect even the smallest evolution options which are logged in detail. Seat angle too steep or head angle too shallow?

Could the chain stays be longer for more riding stability – or should the bike be more agile? Does the calculated top tube length correspond correctly to the seating position required for the bikes application? How sensitive and pedalling-neutral is the chassis? With the background of countless training and racing kilometres, no prototype in the world is able to deceive the pro riders of our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM – mostly to the delight of our R&D team and always for the benefit of all Merida customers. Back in Merida’s R&D headquarters, the feedback and data input is processed meticulously before the next run on the test track – and then again until all participants at this stage of development are fully satisfied. Then the engineers take a back seat, and our designers take over; working to strict specifications in terms of target weight, stiffness data and any particular manufacturing requirements, the raw aluminium prototype is transformed into a perfectly styled bike – ready and waiting to be produced at Merida’s Taiwanese headquarters.

Utterly reliable Taiwanese manufacturing Manufactured according to ultimate quality standards and tested under the toughest laboratory conditions: MERIDA represents reliability.

Since 1972, Merida has been based in Yuanlin, Taiwan. No other international location merges more bike-manufacturing know-how than the metropolitan area around Taichung in Taiwan. No matter if it is in-house manufacturing of elaborate aluminium frames or creation of complex carbon frames by premium production partners: All Merida bikes are crafted according to cutting-edge standards to guarantee long-lasting reliability. This outstanding quality is confirmed not only by the superb test results of leading international bike magazines, but also and more importantly by regular in-house tests for compliance to our demanding standards – and by external test labs that scrutinise all our Merida products too.

All components are rigorously tested and sourced via the "A-Team". The A-Team is a cooperation with Toyota. As a leading global bike factory, Merida have worked to make sure the standards, reliability and R&D of their component partners advance with them. This is a central philosophy in Toyotas production technique and essential for a high quality factory such as Merida.

Before Merida’s factory in Yuanlin starts production of a new bike, pre-production development mules have already been tested meticulously at the German research and development centre. Now, test samples in all frame sizes are checked against mandatory pan-European EN standards. These tests represent the bare minimum and our engineers always aim for more.

Ninety-Nine The evolution of XC full SUSPENSION

Since its introduction to the market in the 2008 season, our high-end racing full suspension bike the NINETYSIX has been winning virtually tons of lsilver ware: The bike press raved about this thoroughbred racing machine characterized by no-compromise propulsion, minimum weight and so far unmatched stiffness data. The original prototype catapulted MULTIVAN MERIDA pro rider Ralph Naef to silver at the Fort William World Championship in 2007 on its first competitive outing. And until the 2011 season, our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM rode the NINETY-SIX into the top ranks. Therefore this excellent bike’s successor had to accept a considerable inheritance. Intensive development work was necessary to create the NINETY-NINE as an evolutionary stage of the 100 mm racing full suspension bike consistent with the NINETY-SIX's reputation and performance. So our R&D team followed the objective to preserve all excellent NINETY-SIX genes with their focus for racing and transfer them to a new bike that reflects the current trends of the XC World Cup circuit. There had to be speed, agility, high traction and neutral suspension performance even on the steepest ascents – as well as sufficient sensitivity for technically demanding downhill sections, all present in the NINETY-SIX genes plus, a key change-optimization for the 2x10 gearing - the current racing standard. Juergen Falke (Merida’s Head of Design) states, “With the NINETY-NINE, we have created a true racing machine that uses all available development potential of its predecessor to the fullest extent. It was hardly possible to outclass the weight and stiffness data of our NINETYSIX – but the successor to the throne represents a new level of handling and suspension performance.” The main frame, seat and chain stays as well as the rocker link for the suspension strut linkage consist completely of an intelligent mix between High Modulus (HM), Ultra High Modulus (UHM) and Intermediate (IM) carbon fibres. The reinforcing “Double Chamber” technology in the top and down tube enhances bending and torsional stiffness once again. Together with the 165 mm suspension strut that is shorter in comparison to the NINETY-SIX version, the NINETY-NINE frame* achieves an outstanding ultra-light weight of 1.85 kg (incl. shock) – in spite of the mighty BB30 bottom bracket or mounting the complete rear stay on sealed cartidge bearings! Other “State-of-the-art” developments are the tapered steerer (increasing from 1 1/8 to 1.5”) and the post-mount standard for direct mounting of the rear disc brake. In summary, the NINETY-NINE offers 100 mm front and rear suspension travel, with the racing-orientated kinematics and a chassis that is completely lockable from the handlebar, this design is nothing less than our next attack on the World Cup’s top ranks!

Big.Nine Ingenious engineering performance

For hardtail enthusiasts, 29ers (MTBs with 29” wheels) are unstoppable – and deservedly so: Compared with 26” bikes, they offer many advantages with very few limitations that can be overcome almost completely via competent engineering and valuable pro rider feedback. With the BIG.NINE series – and especially the racing rocket BIG.NINE Carbon, (already tested successfully by the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM) – Merida has created an amazing 29er whose advantages have been celebrated enthusiastically already in the cycling press. The early incarnation was the TWENTY-NINE Lite model which the German magazine MountainBIKE headlined “Tester’s Darling” (MountainBIKE 5/11), and magazine bike elected the Merida as “our testers’ favourite bike” (bike 1/11). Thus Merida have created a bike that is successful right from the start. Only a few features of the celebrated concept could still be improved – a process which utilized all the racing genes of our O.NINE (José Hermida’s World Champion bike) and finally resulted in the BIG.NINE. As centre piece of the top version BIG.NINE Carbon, the frame weighs below 1100 g – despite internal cable routing, mighty BB30 bottom bracket and the “Tapered Steerer” that increases from 1 1/8 to 1.5”. The very low weight is possible through using cutting-edge carbon fibre technologies (e. g. “Nano Matrix Carbon”) and intelligent fibre mixes using IHM, HM and UHM fibres. Our “Structural Element Monocoque” approach matches the needs of each joint with the appropriate technology. Elements that experience extremely high loads (i.e. the connection of down tube and BB shell) are connected via internal sleeves while “Tube-to-Tube” technology applies to less stressed sections (i.e. the connection between tob tube and seat tube). In this way, the entire construction gets an outstanding STW (“Stiffness-to-Weight”) ratio.

A

B

B  The functional and weight saving integration of the postmount caliper.

But even the best material is useless if a 29er is not thought-out down to the very last detail: The bigger wheels cause geometry changes that require comprehensive engineering skills. For example, Merida solves the typical problem of high front ends via an extremely short head tube – resulting in maximum pressure on the front wheel. The BIG.NINE’s “X-Taper” head tube outclasses even the O.NINE’s stiffness data which compensates for the greater flex in longer fork legs as well as the bigger (and therefore softer) wheels. Thanks to its “Flex Stay” seat stays, the BIG.NINE offers excellent comfort that is supplemented by a BB30, where stiffness is 20 % higher than even our already superb O.NINE. A true piece of engineering art, the BIG.NINE is complemented by asymmetric chain stays, a curved seat tube with direct-mount front derailleur, post-mount disc fixings and 142 mm dropouts.

A  „Direct Mount“, the derailleur is installed directly to the curved seat tube whose shape offers maximum rear wheel clearance. The BB30 bottom bracket generates powerful propulsion.

C  Due to „Double Chamber“ technology within top and down tube, the BIG.NINE frame is superbly stiff.

One-Twenty The athletic All Rounder

For 2011, our All Mountain ONE-TWENTY family got a new member: The ONE-TWENTY Carbon, our engineers complemented the “carefree” all-rounder’s broad character with additional racing ambitions and sent the bike to the world’s long-distance race courses. The light-weight and stiff carbon model was described as “a speed-addicted racing machine” (MountainBIKE 3/11). So our ONE-TWENTY Carbon gained great results on international testing grounds. For 2012, the aluminium version gets its next stage of evolution: From now on, its revised kinematics differ completely from the carbon model’s concept. Thus our 2012 ONE-TWENTY accentuates the 120 mm category’s “carefree” suitability for every day. This bike class is a kind of two-wheeled “Swiss army knife”. The ONE-TWENTY aluminium is impressive at first sight: The hydroformed one-piece top tube with its support flowing into the seat tube does not only speak an organic design language but due to its construction, it also provides greater clearance due to a lower standover height. Another result of the Hydroforming technology is the new seat tube with its directly integrated mounts for the new rocker link. Compared with 2011, this aluminium element has been slimmed down by an impressive 40 %. All in all, the Merida R&D team was able to reduce the ONE-TWENTY’s frame weight to below 2500 g* – a perceptible improvement especially on long climbs.

A

Together with the “Tapered Steerer” (increasing from 1 1/8 to 1.5”) and the torsion-resistant BB section, this low total weight yields an outstanding STW (“Stiffnessto-Weight”) ratio. Thanks to its overall geometry, our ONE-TWENTY remains an immensely swift and agile model. It is the Merida with the broadest range of application – once again.

B

A  Organic design language – all one piece and in its shapeliest form: Our ONE-TWENTY performs superbly and has a stylishly modern design. Technical Features

Reacto Aero racer with outstanding comfort

After the REACTO’s introduction at last year's Eurobike, the first comparative test by much respected German tour magazine only had good things to say (tour magazine 2/11). With design language perfected down to the very last detail and the low frame weight of 1048 g*, our REACTO achieved stiffness data only possible from the best “traditional“ racing machines – and thus outclassed its “aero“ competitors. Obviously, our R&D experts did their homework very well and used the multi-award-winning SCULTURA EVO as a role model for the creation of a modern semiaero racing machine. Thanks to the mighty BB30 bottom bracket with its stiffness of 125 N/mm and a steerer stiffness of 84 N/mm at the tapered head tube. The “Structure Element Carbon” frame consisting of High Modulus (HM) fibres features “Double Chamber” technology in the down tube enhancing the carbon construction’s torsional stiffness via a transversely integrated rib. A fullcarbon fork with “tapered steerer” completes the stiff, responsive package. RoadBike 3/11 concluded “precise handling in every situation“. In its second year the REACTO has perfect integration of electronic Di2 shifting systems – and with the radical approach of providing contemporary comfort to aero racers that are, otherwise, perceived as very rigid: The magic words “S-Flex Comfort” represent a completely revised seat post which looks like it is part of the aero frame but is fully height adjustable. Due to its exceptional construction with rear-side elastomer and integrated carbon compound spring, the patent-pending “S-Flex” achieves comfort data offered so far only by the best 27.2 mm seat posts – at a sensational net weight of 201 g and without any restrictions to the rider’s own weight. Compared with the 2011 version, our new “S-Flex” post works independently from saddle pullout. In every adjustment position, it offers comfort characteristics that may turn our REACTO into possibly the most complete aero racing machine of 2012.

A

B

A  Flowing: The organic connection between chain stays, top and seat tube is not only attractive, but also equally stiff and flexible – for the desired symbiosis between propulsion and comfort. B  Fitting: The rear wheel delights with aerodynamically clever fitting behind the low-profiled seat stay.

The chassis of our All Mountain ONE-FORTY is shock-absorbing enough to master technical descents and drops safely. The low total weight and drivetrain-neutral kinematics enable easy riding on steep and longer ascents – ideal for all riders who want to ride up as well as down.

XC Race / Marathon

Ninety-Nine The evolution of XC Racing.

The redefinition of XC and Marathon racing: Developed from the ground up to utilise a 2x10 set up. After several years of close cooperation between the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM and our R&D experts, the successor to our NINETY-SIX is ready. The equally light-weight NINETY-NINE has a comparatively stiffer BB and significantly more efficient chassis. Thanks to its “X-Taper” head tube, the 100 mm front end gives superb directional stability and stiffness. The 99 mm rear section is sensitive and drivetrain-neutral. Combined with a geometry designed for pure speed and acceleration, these features turn our NINETY-NINE into a thoroughbred racer. A fact underlined by a chassis that can be locked completely via remote lockout while also offering frontal lowering*. The main frame, rocker link and rear stay are full-carbon elements that ease the struggle against clock and competitors by saving as much weight as possible. The top version NINETY-NINE Carbon Team-D weighs just 8.9 kg** (for frame size 18”)! But our new bike does not only convince on the scales – also its chassis performance sets new benchmarks in the 100 mm category: The kinematics are optimized for 2x10 drivetrains and works – due to M.O.R.E. technology – identically in all frame sizes.

MArathon / Trail

One-Twenty Entirely according to your taste

120 mm full suspension bikes epitomize modern trail bikes: Light enough and with drivetrain-neutral chassis for easy climbing. Suspension travel and geometry providing plenty of reserves for demanding downhills – top for applications from marathons, trail centres through to endurance stage races like the TransWales. Introduced last year, the ONE-TWENTY Carbon continues its Marathon trail of success with an almost unaltered configuration and is still first choice for long-distance racers. But the aluminium equivalent has been revised completely – it is considerably “sportier” now and tackles the trails with greatly improved utilization of suspension travel. The differences are obvious at first sight: The organically shaped hydroforming aluminium frame looks visually smoother and flowing, dropping to give an improved stand over height. The seat tube has integrated mounts for the ultra-light rocker link between rear stay and suspension strut, resulting in a low frame weight of 2500 g* – combined with superb stiffness and equally sensitive and neutral kinematics. With its “trail-friendly” angles, the aluminium ONE-TWENTY is still agile with perceptibly greater smoothness.

Carbon Hardtals  O.Nine

With the 2011 TWENTY-NINE Lite last year’s Merida premiere in terms of 29” bikes was hugely successful. From 2012, our BIG.NINE family represents a total of five models covering all levels. From the extremely light-weight and stiff BIG.NINE CARBON (already utilized successfully by the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM) to our BIG.NINE Lite with identical racing qualities. The BIG.NINE TFS makes big wheels more affordable. All 29” riders benefit from increased traction, enhanced comfort and superb riding stability. All BIG. NINEs have 100 mm suspension travel with lock-out.

As our top-of-the-line version for 2012, the World Championship winning bike of MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM pro rider José Antonio Hermida proudly wears the UCI’s rainbow colours. New for 2012, we offer two O.NINE frame options. The “Superlite” series is manufactured towards lowest possible weight while the slightly more economical “Pro” frames range around 1000 g. All 2012 carbon hardtails feature 100 mm front suspension travel with comfortable lockout from the handlebar. The top version’s fork can even be lowered by 20 mm to ensure even more front wheel pressure during steep uphills.

Active  Matts

Our “Sport” hardtails are inspired by the racing geometry of our high-end carbon rocket Merida O.NINE – and are the best choice for all racers and riders who are looking for an aluminium bike with a performance focus.

MTBs are pieces of sports equipment, aren’t they? In case of our MATTS family, this question is not easy to answer – because a MATTS represents many aspects: It’s a light-weight MTB hardtail that consists of high-quality “Racelite 6061” aluminium and has 100 mm suspension travel. In equal measure, it is a robust bike whose moderately sporty geometry provides cycling fun for hours. And a MATTS is also a reliable partner for every day: But with its new, organically shaped down tube and its now mightier head tube, a MATTS is first and foremost: A premium bike – like every Merida.

MATTS Lite bikes are made from ultra high performance Prolite 66 aluminium that is hydroformed and smooth welded, the ultimate in aluminium frame manufacturing. MATTS TFS bikes are made from lightweight Racelite 61 aluminium which is formed through technoforming processes. All feature 100mm lockable forks.

BIG.NINE Big wheels, big know-how

A category that the UK helped to drive, we had been requesting a 29er for years, seeing the trend from the States. But then it hit the XC race scene and all hell broke loose in the R&D department. Now we have a full range. In its first race, the incredibly tough Cape Epic stage race in South Africa, the BIG.NINE Carbon carried the team to 2nd, 6th and 10th out of hundreds of international teams. Without doubt, these big off-roaders offer several irrefutable advantages (see p. 36). But there’s still the question: Who benefits? In the case of our big BIG.NINE family: Everyone from leisure cyclists to MTB pro riders! We have designed the 29er’s naturally higher front end to be as flat as possible. Despite shorter chain stays, the rear provides enough clearance for broader tires. And the superbly balanced BB position enables better uphill and downhill performance in equal measure.

Know-how

Geometry Comparison 29 Inch / 26 Inch

MTBs with a 29“ wheelset offer several advantages: Regardless of frame material, traction and running smoothness are better. the little extra weight is offset by greater comfort.

Compared with 26“ bikes, their bigger tires give 29ers a little more traction and comfort: The larger contact surface puts rubber on the ground in a more advantageous way. This results in less rolling resistance and better grip – be it up- or downhill, during cornering or braking. At the same time, the larger tyre with its increased air volume means better damping and therefore more comfort. 29” wheels have also a positive effect when the rider crosses over obstacles (e. g. roots) or rough terrain: The bigger wheels hit the obstacle at a flatter angle and are slowed down less. Thus less energy is necessary to master the bump – this physical characteristic simply feels “softer” for the rider. Furthermore, comparatively higher comfort is also generated by a 29er’s relatively longer seat and chain stays which are required to provide adequate space for the bigger wheels. A 29er’s riding stability is comparatively higher, too: The longer wheelbase offers greater smoothness which is especially noticable in downhill sections. But the relative BB position plays also an important role. At identical “BB height” (measured from the ground), a 29er’s bottom bracket sits comparatively lower beneath the imaginary hub axle (“BB drop”) – On steep ascents, a 29” front wheel tends to rise considerably later. During steep and technically demanding downhill runs, the rider gets the feeling of less “tumbling” over the handlebar.

O.Nine

The World Champion’s bike

Just two words: World Champion! In 2010, the O.NINE replaced our CARBON FLX a bike that had already won World Championship laurels. Since then, it has been carrying our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM from triumph to triumph. Already during its first “term of office”, the O.NINE followed the footsteps of its CARBON FLX predecessor and it catapulted MULTIVAN MERIDA pro rider José A. Hermida to his Men’s XC World Champion title! As the O.NINE is still successfully competing in the World Cup circuit, there has been, no reason to change this outstanding bike. Nevertheless there are some alterations in MY 2012: Besides the World Champion decor, the team version delivers a complete Sram XX configuration and the new 100 mm DT Swiss XRC Carbon fork. Thanks to TwinShot technology, the latter can not only be blocked for sprinting, but also be lowered for easier climbing – and thus for even more uphill power! Also new: Easier access to our high-end hardtail as there are two O.NINE frame versions available. The “Superlight” option consists solely of Ultra High Modulus (UHM) carbon fibres and achieves therefore record weights that are certified individually. On the other hand, the frames of our “Pro” series range just over 1 kg – due to high-quality High Modulus (HM) fibres whose stiffness data equal the “Superlight” version’s level! Both still utilising Merida proprietary technology such as the comfortable “Flex Stay” seat stays or “Double Chamber Technology” that increases the bending and torsional stiffness of the chassis.

Matts Lite / TFS The all-round talents for racing and trails

When our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM riders start the race on their amazing team bikes such as the O.NINE, they know they can rely not only upon premium material and sophisticated components, but also upon the effords of the R&D team who have made sure that every last detail is worked out to get the best performance out of the bike. This same knowledge and care is taken on all Merida bikes. This applies to the high-quality aluminium models MATTS Lite and TFS whose geometries, tube shapes and frame details are inspired by the racing machines of our MULTIVAN MERIDA pro athletes. They follow literally the same (geometric) framework. All Merida sport hardtails are constructed using high-quality aluminium and are manufactured by means of elaborate production processes such as hydroforming and technoforming giving them light weight and performance characteristics. The MATTS TFS 300-D looks so good it could be a pro team bike.

Upgrade for the entry-level series

The engine room of the Merida hardtail range. Solid everyday bikes up to budget racers there is plenty of choice with performance to match. The name MATTS comes from deep within Merida history. „MATTS“ = MERIDA Advanced TIG-Welding Technology System turning topquality aluminium tubes into frames whose geometry carries the athletic character of all MERIDA bikes. Compared to some competitors the level of aluminium we use even on our cheapest bikes is superior to their more expensive models. For 2012, most of the MATTS family gets a refresh with larger head tube dimensions for even more steering and directional stability – supported by a completely new curved down tube that is also a feature of our TFS Pro series. Options vary from 21 speed with V-Brakes to 27 speed with hydraulic disc brakes and lock-out forks.

Juliet Outstanding design and functionality

Every element of our Juliet Bikes has been tuned to deliver max. Female rider performance. Our design engineers and R&D team have designed the 2012 Juliet frames from the ground up, to quietly deliver improved and confidence-inspiring handling like no other bike on the market. A graceful arcing top-tube not only acts as a showcase for Merida’s considerable Aluminium frame construction expertise, but also delivers vastly improved stand-over height. Even the BB shell has been lowered to improve handling and reinforce the feeling that you are riding in, rather than perched-on, top of your new Juliet MTB.

Know-how

Geometry Comparison JULIET / MATTS TFS XC

Several important features distinguish our ladies-specific JULIET bikes from our Matts models for men. At first sight, it’s obvious that a JULIET MTB hardtail follows a considerably different geometry to a MATTS hardtail, with slightly longer head tube, slightly shorter top tube and a somewhat lower BB position. Only if a lady is fitted comfortably onto her bike, will she enjoy riding.

This reassuring feeling is further enhanced by the comparatively longer head tube which raises the JULIET front end and enables a slightly more upright body posture. In combination with the slightly shorter top tube, this results in a less stretched and therefore more comfortable seating position.

A  Just 5 mm for the big difference: Due to the comparatively longer head tube, a JULIET bike’s front end moves upwards. This enables a more relaxed seating position.

Thanks to the steeper top tube slope towards the seat tube, the JULIET geometry generates a lower standover height (= the distance between ground and top tube) that feels reassuring in all situations – such as sudden stops. This is supported by a comparatively lower BB position that also ensures a low centre of gravity and, therefore, agile handling.

All those advantages apply to MERIDA JULIET road bikes as well: The latter follow the comfort concept of our “Road Ride” series with an equally elevated front end and extended chain stays for more comfort and cycling safety.

B  The BB position of a JULIET varies by 5 mm as well – the results: More legroom and fast ground contact of the feet.

CROSSWAY The all-purpose bike for sport and every day

The Crossways greatest strength is its versatility. 700c tyres mean effortless rolling on tarmac, gravel paths, forest trails and grassland. In reality it is the bike that many people really should buy for their commute to work, or as their day to day bike to keep fit and do their bit to ease pollution. The range goes from sensible basic models with lightweight frames, 21 gears and a suspension fork through to technically advanced aluminium frames with 30 gears, hydraulic disc brakes, suspension forks and even a suspension seat post, a really classy commuter.

Speeder Speedy by name – speedy by nature

Our halfway house between road bikes and hybrids, combining the speed and efficiency of a road bike with the comfort of a hybrid. The flat handlebar set up gives a more upright seating position making it a perfect partner for leisure rides or commuting as you have a comfortable position and good visibility. Speeders also differ from their road bike cousins with wider 32mm tyres, which give a greater volume of air and therefore greater comfort. 2012 sees the introduction of a carbon fibre version bringing a super lightweight and compliant option to the party.

S-Presso Effortless sophistication

Beautiful and efficient, the S’Presso is a hybrid, designed by our European cousins for trips around town and rides to the coffee shop (hence the name). Despite its day to day usage, the S’Presso has a lot of impressive design features. All of the cabling runs down a hidden channel under the down tube giving the bike a really clean appearance. The frame is made from high performance 6061 aluminium that is smooth welded to create a seamless look and the head tube is conical shaped providing high steering precision but also the appearance of unity between the fork and the bike. For ultimate simplicity we created a UK exclusive single speed bike, which amused us when we named it the Single S’Presso!

Cyclo Cross Update with disc brakes

New news for 2012 is the Carbon Cyclo Cross bike which now comes with disc brakes in line with the UCI announcement that their use is allowed in competition. That simple statement gave the R&D team a much bigger project than just adding disc brake mounts to the frame and fork, as the forces involved with disc brakes are very different to those generated by the traditional cantilever brakes. All of the key ingredients from the 2011 frame remain, with flexstay technology to give riders the maximum comfort on rough tracks At the other end of the scale, our aluminium bike retains cantilever brakes to be an all-rounder capable of cyclo cross racing, commuting and winter training – it always feels a clichÊ, but the cyclo cross bike is about as close as it is possible to get to being the two wheel equivilent the swiss army knife!

Road Race Fast, beautiful and even more comfortable

It came, it performed and it conquered! Right from the start, the Merida REACTO convinced its riders as well as the bike press and demonstrated impressively our engineers’ brilliant capacity to combine a modern aero design with all the genes of our very successful SCULTURA. Despite that success, our R&D experts left no stone unturnedwhen it came to further improvement of the ultra-light and ultra-stiff REACTO. There was a little improvement potential left due to the fact that the rear of carbon aero frames is, by nature, slightly less comfortable than comparable models with classic design. Our REACTO’s damping and vibration characteristics were improved with the patent-pending and totally revised 2012 seat post. Which now has comfort qualities comparable to those of the best 27.2 mm seatposts. Cunningly, our seat post still matches the aero frame’s design while being completely adjustable and free of any weight limitation. Thanks to carbon technologies such as “Double Chamber” (for enhanced torsional and lateral stiffness) or the “Nano Matrix Carbon” composite of premium fibres, our REACTO remains a first-class high-tech racer in 2012. Further development came with integration of electronic shifting systems: Both REACTO and our carbon classic SCULTURA are now available as versions with a Di2 shifting group that has been introduced at Ultegra level and involves perfectly integrated cables. Our SCULTURA and the aluminium road RACE LITE 904 enjoy another valuable upgrade featuring light-weight and highly shock-absorbing full-carbon forks with “Double Chamber” technology.

Road Ride Miles More Fun

Road riding has boomed in the last few years, even spawning the phenomena of the MAMIL, the middle aged man in lycra! Road bikes have evolved to suit the new influx of riders who want the thrill of speed, and the challenge of long sportif style rides. A key consideration for these riders is comfort. Not all of us can or want to be stretched out in racing position for hours on end. But, don’t be mistaken into thinking that comfort means any lack of performance. The Ride family have the looks and speed of traditional road racing bikes, but some very subtle tweaks to make them suitable for everyday riding. The front end is very slightly higher, with a slightly longer head tube, and shallower drops on the handlebars so even when you are tucked in, the position is not so extreme. The wheelbase is a touch longer to give a very agile but more stable feeling to the ride, whilst the tyres are 2mm wider than the race bikes giving a greater contact patch and greater air volume for comfort. The comfort story continues with a narrower seat post and slim seat stays to allow for some flex so that bumps in the road are more effectively absorbed. All Ride bikes are equipped with compact chainsets with 50 -34 tooth combinations. Merida favour compacts rather than triples because they give a broad range of gears but without the weight penalty. Thus, the MAMIL can look the part and enjoy the experience as well.

Know-how

Geometry Comparison Ride / Race

The devil is in the detail.

A  The elevated front end of our RIDE road bike family means: A more comfortable seating position for less stress on hands, spine or shoulders – during longer rides.

The chart shows the differences, that make the Ride family our “comfortable” option. Figure A shows the difference in handlebar height between a comparable Road Race and Road Ride bike. The slightly elevated position reduces the stress on the spine, shoulders, hands and arms. The wheelbase is lengthened by increasing the chain stays by 5mm to give a more stable ride. The seat stays are reduced in width to allow more compliance and along with a narrower seat post help deliver a more comfortable ride.

Warp

The exclusive formula

The Time Warp was the brainchild of Juergen Falke our R&D chief and a 9 hour 39 minute full Ironman competitor despite being 44! Juergen has taken part in many races over the years and seen many transition areas full of bikes. He noted that many people had the wrong bike, riding a full on time trial bike with lots of spacers and high rise stems to get them into an ironman position. The dilemma for many riders is they may do 2 or 3 Ironman events a year but many more short distance events. The needs of the two events are very different, after a 10 mile time trial in an incredibly tucked in position it is possible to tumble off the bike, lie on the ground and recover from a huge intensity ride before getting in the car to go home. For an Ironman, you get off the bike after 180km to in the case of Juergen run a marathon in less than 2 hours 45 minutes! So the needs are very different, both need to be aerodynamic, but the longer the distance the more comfortable you need to be. Therefore there has to be a compromise – do you have the super aero position for the time trial and then jack yourself up for the Ironman or have Ironman bike and feel you are too high for the time trial!? Well that question does not arise if you have a Time Warp, as the head tube is modular, so you can raise / lower the front of the bike by 40mm (2 x 20mm modules). Therefore you can tailor the bike to suit the event and have the right position for the best results.

engineering and a fanatical attention to detail, it is no surprise that Alpina are one of the biggest brands in German cycling. From the top of the range Pheos to the very entry level Gamma, Alpina’s 100% German designed helmets are manufactured and extensively tested at their German Factory.

Elite MTB Team

Multivan Merida Biking Team Athletic success thanks to continuity: This elite squad is a true team.

Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå Rudi van Houts

José Antonio Hermida

Hannes Genze

Andreas Kugler Ralph Näf

Since its foundation in 2002, our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM has been drawing attention over and over again: Thanks to outstanding athletic performances and strong team spirit, the squad around the three World Champions José Hermida, Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå and Ralph Naef is equally feared and loved by competitors. Their secret of success is actually no secret, as Team Manager Andreas Rottler reveals, “Besides the fact that we have an equally excellent line-up for Men’s as well as for Women’s XC and Marathon, MULTIVAN MERIDA is first of all characterized by strong continuity.” Year after year, this is demonstrated by our pro biking team at more than 100 races in over 20 countries on all five continents. Since the foundation of the team, the world-class riders have been supported continuously by their two main sponsors MERIDA and Volkswagen. But also the squad remained nearly unchanged: Particularly Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå and Ralph Naef achieved their big triumphs on MERIDA bikes – in 2004, the Norwegian won Olympic Gold in Athens. Then both became Marathon World Champions in 2006. The record of success is complemented by other World and European Championship titles in XC and Marathon. Over several years, both athletes collected also important World Cup points to turn MULTIVAN MERIDA into the world’s most successful pro biking team. At their side: José A. Hermida (XC World Champion 2010), Jochen Kaess (German Marathon Champion 2010), Andreas Kugler (Swiss Champion 2010), Rudi van Houts (twice Dutch XC Champion) and German marathon specialist Hannes Genze. With this line-up, our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM is optimally prepared to dominate the world’s MTB elite also in 2012.

JosĂŠ Antonio Hermida

portrait José Antonio Hermida

From World Class to Legend At the age of 14, MULTIVAN MERIDA pro rider José Antonio Hermida climbs a mountain bike for the first time, today he is a World Champion. Despite of all his success, the Spaniard remains first of all: incredibly likeable. At the age of 14, José Antonio Hermida Ramos (born 08/24/1978) experiences a crucial change in his life. Until then, the Spaniard had already kept himself busy with all kinds of sports activities while his ambition, however, had rarely reached beyond skiing, skateboarding, ice hockey and swimming at school. But in 1992, some friends finally introduced today’s XC World Champion to mountain biking. Debut in pink shorts and ice hockey helmet Driven by the idea to participate in a neighbourhood MTB race together with some of his buddies, José Hermida promises his parents to achieve a good General Certificate of Secondary Education – if they reward him with an MTB. So the deal is sealed: Soon after he has passed all exams, José rides his first bike through the landscape of the sparsely inhabited province Girona near the French border. But this “training” in the Catalan Pyrenees is still far from being organized: “More or less, I just pedalled a little around,” the present-day MULTIVAN MERIDA pro rider remembers. But nevertheless this preparation was sufficient to win at once the first race in Llivia some 5 km away – wearing pink shorts and an ice hockey helmet. His current sponsors would tear their hair.

But not just since he’s been wearing the World Champion’s rainbow colours, José Hermida considers himself as an ambassador of his sports discipline whose image he determines. All the more astonishing that this self-imposed mission still leaves room for private matters. “Nothing in our home is reminiscent of biking – there are only my wife and my two kids.” The MULTIVAN MERIDA pro rider draws a strict line between job and private life while his family attends his World Cup races only seldom. “Although it feels like a hobby: Absolving bike races is my profession. If I went to office every day, my family would also not come to my desk to watch what I do.” But nevertheless, José’s three loved ones are always with him – as shown by the many times our World Champion calls home during his travels around the world. A perception of profession which is typical for José Hermida: Successful and sympathetic.

“That race is still very clear in my mind – but even more my second one which I did not win.” Already very ambitious as a youngster, José Hermida takes the significant decision to improve his riding skills in every and each detail. “Being second did not feel good. Thus I decided to enhance not only my endurance, but also my riding technique. In the end, I lost this race due to a handling mistake. I just wanted to be a better José in the saddle.” So José Hermida worked consistently to overcome his weaknesses – with success: In 1997 he had already won so many races that he had to decide between studying at Barcelona University and a career as a professional athlete. His parents advised him to choose the latter: “Studying is still possible later, becoming a pro rider only now.” The MTB sport must be grateful to them. Ambassador of MTB sport During the next years, the personable Spaniard becomes known as an athlete whose triumphs are not begrudged even by his competitors. And there’s a lot to celebrate: Seven Spanish National Championships, many World Cup wins, three Gold and two Silver Medals at European Championships, Olympic Gold in Athens, Junior and U23 World Champion as well as – at last! –2010 World Champion in the premier class of mountain biking!

James requires no introduction – Champion Olympic Rower turned endurance athlete extraordinaire. James is an incredible human being and having experienced a near fatal accident during his audacious attempt to cross the States from west to east coast via Route 66 –all under his own steam of course - has battled back to competitive form once again in what can only be described as a miracle recovery. Now a full Merida Athlete and Alpina Brand Ambassador, since his recovery from his accident James has competed in Yukon Arctic Ultra snow bike race, London Marathon, Adidas Terrex Coast to Coast, Tandem 12 Hour time-trial and intends to set a new LEJOG Tandem record. Sounds like any other persons road to recovery post a serious head/brain injury really...... As previously mentioned James is clearly no ordinary human being but with that is an all round top guy – his voluntary work for Head Injury charity Headway attests to that, and Merida are proud to be associated with him.

Timo Glock

As a Formula 1 driver, Timo Glock needs a lot of endurance which he gets via his training rounds on MERIDA bikes.

Some teenagers deposit their confirmation money while others get a moped for it. Timo Glock did something different: He bought a go-kart. So since 1997, the now 29-year-old German has preferred to sit in and on everything that is fast. From 1997 to 1999, Glock showed his talent for kart racing. In 2000, he absolved Junior Class races of the Formula BMW and became champion right away. This success, at the latest, made clear for Timo Glock that he wanted to be a pro driver. In the Formula 3, the pilot from the Forest of Odes distinguished himself immediately as best newcomer by achieving Position 3 in overall ranking via three wins. His next step was a success as well: Rank 5 in the then newly founded Formula 3 Euro Series. And then, finally, the big moment… As test driver for Jordan, Glock directly absolved four F1 races during his very first “royal class” season in 2004 and even crowned his premiere in Montreal with two World Championship points. In 2005, he made his mark as “Rookie of the Year” with two podium positions in the American “Champ Car World Series” – in spite of the comparatively small budget of his racing team Rocketsports.

In 2007, Timo Glock’s GP2 Championship title caught the increased attention of several F1 racing teams again. Initially as test driver and then back-up pilot for BMW Sauber, the up-and-coming talent changed “officially” into the royal class of motorsports in 2008: With the Toyota Racing Team, Glock scored – straightaway – a superb success in form of Rank 2 at the GP Hungary. He finished his debut season with 25 points and Rank 10. Also during 2009, the German pro pilot achieved impressive results such as Rank 3 in Malaysia or the fastest lap time at the European GP. When Toyota left the F1 circus at the end of 2009, Timo Glock joined his current team Virgin Racing. Athletic activities are crucial for Timo Glock – they ensure best possible fitness for his pro driver performance. Thus logical: Endurance training via road biking means optimum preparation for long F1 races. With our MERIDA REACTO Team, the likeable F1 pilot enjoys a training tool that matches his character perfectly – respectively the desire to sit always in and on everything that is fast!
