Level 2 Certificate in Cycle Maintenance combined with engineering or business and enterprise This course represents a unique combination of elements provided by Oxford Cycle Workshop Training, The Cherwell School and Oxford and Cherwell Valley College. The course is full time and lasts for one year. The course combines a practical certificate in cycle maintenance with either an engineering or a business and enterprise route depending on whether you wish to pursue a technical or sales and business self-start up option. The course is taught at both The Cherwell School and Oxford & Cherwell Valley College.

Whether you’re looking to become part of a bike shop sales team, be a full time cycle mechanic or take an entrepreneurial route to setting up your own bike related business Oxford is the perfect place. There is also the opportunity to progress in education to a Level 3 in either engineering or business or via an apprenticeship in cycle maintenance.

Level 2 Certificate in Cycle Maintenance

Level 2 Diploma in Business

This course is aimed at anyone thinking of working in the cycle industry and the qualification is the industry standard for a cycle mechanic. The course will give you the skills to service and maintain a standard geared bicycle and prepare you for work in the cycle industry. The lessons are practically orientated and are delivered by experienced cycle industry tutors*. Trade recognised accreditation is required by many companies as the minimum standard they will employ. The course covers:

The course is practical and work related and provides a broad foundation of business education. You learn by completing projects and assignments based on real businesses in the area. The course units to be studied will deal with various aspects of business including business principles and business skills. There are six units of study:

• Health and Safety in the workshop and relevant legislations • Knowledge of British Standards relating to the sale of new bicycles • Customer service skills • Workshop practices, engineering principles and practices. • An understanding various standard types of bicycle components • Basic adjustments and setup of a cycle. • Frame alignment and preparation • Headset removal, fitting and adjustment. • Brake removal, fitting and adjustment. • Gear removal, fitting and adjustment. • Understanding the principles and materials used in wheel building

• Introduction to Business Activity • Exploring Key Business Pressures • Investigating Financial Control • Sales and Customer Service • Starting up a New Business • Employee Contribution to Working Conditions

Entry criteria You will have completed school and be aged 16 or over. The entry qualifications are that you should possess GCSE grades in Maths and English at Grade D or above for the engineering route. For the business route you should possess four GCSEs grade D including English Language and Maths. Demonstration of an appropriate level of literacy and numeracy in the Initial Assessment is also required.

This is a new qualification that has been developed with input from industry. It gives a broad choice which encompasses up-to-date techniques and technology across a range of activities.
