M

ike Salyer had an idea to build a motorcycle with his friend. Like many bikes builds, this beautiful bobber did not start off looking close to how it was planned, even the owners were changed. Originally Mike Salyer came to HWY 66 Choppers with an idea about building a bike for a friend. The plan was to build a simple rigid bobber with drag bars and a Evolution style motor. After starting the project, Mikes friend backed out and didn’t want to continue. Mike said the hell with it and figured to continue the build and keep it for himself. This is when the old plan was thrown out the window and the ideas started flying through his head. The first thing was to give the kraftrich frame a cool look and custom rear fender. So they took the frame to Mad Mike Santoro and sons. Giving Mad Mike some info he tweaked the frame a little with a lift, stretch, and everything else the wanted. Clint from HWY 66 Choppers had an idea to shoot the tank and make bullet holes go completely through it. They turned to Mad Mike to make this crazy but innovative idea happen. The Bobbers new look and style was coming together. The next thing was the power plant and drive train. Mike Salyer had been holding on to a 98 cubic inch shovelhead that was perfect for this bike to push the 200-rear tire. Since he is Old School, there was no question that the bike had to have a Springer front end, no front brake, suicide shift, ratchet top trans, and a kick start to keep that old school look and feel. Next step was to get Jason from Sacred Steel to fabricate some of the sickest oil tanks for this unique bike. They were made to look like bombs that could be dropped onto any target. Now it was time for paint. Doug Starbuck of Star Side Designs has the magic to make it all come together. The only way to go was to give it a fighter jet theme, with the eyes, teeth, pin-up girls, and rivets. Star Side Designs took that idea and made this paint job simply awesome. The fighter jet themed was looking great but it was lacking something. So a grenade shifter, some bassani exhausts, custom headlight bracket and a harmonica style microphone for the rear brake light was added to tighten it all up. Just when you think what else can they do to this bike, a handmade leather seat by Tony Murga was mounted to complete this project. This bike not only looks beautiful, but this beast flat out hauls. Mike is no stranger to speed, he races speedway. He might have been a little bit leary on pulling the pin and taming this Hot Rod. So Clint opted to put an extra grip about half way down the high-rise bars so the reach is not so far between shifts to make Mike feel a little bit more like his Speedway race bike. I would think its safe to say Mike used his professional racing skills and made Hell Bound Betty sing. To say that Betty was just what Mike Salyer thought she was going to look like would be a lie. This bike changed style and design through out the build. From the custom headlight bracket to the harmonica microphone taillight. This bike is truly one of a kind. 16 | CYCLEPATHMAG.COM

Mob Syndicate practices at Mike Metzger’s paradise ranch. The team’s hard work and practice has built every rider a hard hitting bag of tricks. The Mob Syndicate riders are showing great skill at all the events they show up to around the world. For example the Mob syndicate rider Matt Buyten took Gold in step up this year with a height of 33’6 at X Games 2010 shutting down Ronnie Renner and Todd Potter. This metal is the first mark for the Mob and will be one of many great things to come from Mob Syndicate. The Godfather has plans to take over the freestyle motocross scene and dominate the circuit. With the Godfather leading his The Syndicate onto the scene taking First place in events such as X Games and taking over podiums at other freestyle events. ver the past fifteen years, the Central Traffic Division of the Los Angeles Police Department has been proud to organize the annual COPS for TOTS Car Show. Since its inception in 1996, the proceeds from this show have benefited the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. As our show grows larger and the proceeds increase, the expanding number of children’s charities that share in the success of the show. The COPS for TOTS Car Show is a valued tradition for organizers and participants alike. The shows have resulted in very successful days of family fun for a good cause. The “Cops for Tots” show raises money for selected children’s charities in the greater Los Angeles area. Over 500 cars filled the entire police academy parking lot as well as the surrounding Academy Road that runs between This year the fifteen annual CTD COPS for TOTS Car Show was held on Sunday, October 24, 2010, at the Los Angeles Police Academy. Over 50 trophies were awarded! When we pulled into the police academy and Dodger Stadium parking lot at around six in the morning. The sky was dark and it was foggy. We were a bit nervous. So glad the weather turned around and became a great day with the sun shining. It was a good turnout of cars and a host of motorcycles. 30 | CYCLEPATHMAG.COM

ames was part of the import car scene that exploded in the 90s, while still in high school. He hung out with SGV legends like Dr. Charles and Pit Crew staff. Tony & James were friends since way back then, they even played high school basketball together. Long story short, Killer Scooter were the first to build James’s first Ruckus in 07. He was one of the test mules for their KS GY6 Swap Kit. After a couple years, James got bored of his Ruckus and sold it. Then Super Sunday 2010 (couple of months later) rolls around and got him all pumped up when he saw the rows of sick builds at the meet. Eddie Krawiec sets record at Pomona on way to victory V-ROD LE Tonglet takes home the Championship

T

his year was the Kragen O’Reilly Drags’ 50th anniversary for the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Full Throttle Drag Racing Series competition at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, CA. The competition did not disappoint. Eddie Krawiec delivered the quickest run in the history of the Pro Stock Motorcycle class aboard his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson, a national-record pass of 6.811 seconds. Krawiec raced a special military-themed V-Rod in honor of Harley-Davidson’s Second Annual Military Appreciation Month. This win was Eddie’s second Wally of the year Andrew Hines held a narrow 34-point margin over LE Tonglet going into the weekend at Pomona. In Qualifying, Andrew was able to extend his lead to 36 points, which meant that Tonglet would have to go at least two rounds further in Eliminations in order to take home the championship. Unfortunately Andrew Hines’ first-round red light to Matt Guidera left the door wide open. LE Tonglet saw his chance and proceeded to win his first and second round matches in Eliminations, while earning him the 40 points he needed to overtake Andrew Hines for the championship. Tonglet is just the third rookie to win a Pro championship. That will put him in some good company with the likes of Frank Hawley (1982) and Gary Scelzi (1997).

Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) was formed in 1963 by a group of talented minds, Roy Richter, Ed iskenderian, Willie Garner, Bob Hedman, John Bartlett, Phil Weiand, Jr., Al Segal, Dean Moon and Vic Edelbrock, Jr. Popular for serving the motor vehicle aftermarket and as part of the AAIW, the SEMA show attracts thousands and thousands of companies who are today’s industry leaders from all around the world for the unlimited profit opportunities in the automotive, truck and SUV, RV, and motorcycle markets. Where better for it to be than Las Vegas, Nevada held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It is said that the SEMA show for the year 2009 attracted more than 60,000 domestic and international buyers. The displays are segmented into twelve sections and a new products showcase, which featured nearly 1,500 newly, introduced parts, tools and components. In addition, the SEMA show provides attendees with educational seminars, product demonstrations, special events and networking opportunities and more. SEMA puts on the greatest car show to which the public is not invited. In brief it is a meetand-greet for manufacturers, distributors, and vendors of aftermarket parts. It has evolved into one of the best custom-car shows in the country. How you ask, well if you want to draw attention to your product, what better way than to showcase it on the best car out there. The SEMA show is closed to the average enthusiast. Fortunately for us, media does get an invite and our mission at SEMA is to bring you the best motorcycles SEMA has to offer. We wondered how many outstanding builds might await our journey through the week of SEMA. We were reminded on just how deep the automotive insanity runs at this event. There were so many amazing sites. The wide variety of booths with children’s toys, classic cars, VIP style, Import, Luxury, truck, barn finds, custom cars and the sickest motorcycles ever. The builders, vendors, and aftermarket guys who largely comprise the SEMA show hit us with one awesome sight after another. The experience is crazy with so much to see and a lot going on. there wasn’t enough going on inside, there was just as much if not more outside. The show within a show; DUB show, the Monster stage, Galpin motor sports, motorcycle stunts, and a drift exhibition A major component missing almost entirely from SEMA are motorcycles and the sport-compact scene seems to be fading away. The muscle cars were everywhere. With the motorcycles placed throughout the different halls we hope to see a change in that rather soon. With so many vehicles to choose from, the miles of walking, food, and the many industry parties, it was a great time had by all. We can’t wait for next year and all that leads up to SEMA 2011 The SEMA show has come and gone, here are some highlights from the 2010 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Kidney Belts

Do You Wear One?

S

aftey first, it’s in all of our best interest to avoid injuries. Almost everyone who rides a motorcycle wears a helmet, boots, chest protector and some sort of knee guard or brace. Everyday more of us are wearing a neck brace. A couple of great examples would be the Alpinestars Bionic Neck Support and a Leatt neck brace. These are obvious ways of protecting the visuals but what about those body parts that you cannot see? Those organs that is important yet hidden from site, the kidneys. May it be that you think just because you cannot see them they are less important then the head? In the event of a crash, an injury to the kidneys may be much more life threatening and less evident than other possible injuries one could have. Based on our research, we have found a few studies over a twelve-year period on the different injuries one can have while riding in the sport of motocross. It was concluded that for every 22.27 hours of outdoor mx riding, a rider is likely to get injured. Falling in a turn or a simple tip over and getting a scrape or two is not what we are talking about. A full 21.2%of these injuries were to the lower trunk where your kidneys are. More than half, 59.9% were ligaments, and 42.4% of those affecting the knees. This is why I wear knee braces! For supercross, the numbers seem to appear much worse. You may or may not know why it is important to take care of your kidneys. Whichever the case, it is crucial you do. Your kidneys are vital; they perform many functions to keep your blood clean and chemically balanced. They are constantly active, sophisticated, reprocessing machines. Everyday, a persons kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood to sift out about 2 quarts of waste products and extra water. That is 50 gallons of your blood each day the kidneys are filtering. After the body has taken what it needs from food, wastes are sent to the blood. These wastes and extra water become urine, which flows to the bladder through tubes called urethras. Your bladder stores urine until you can’t hold it any longer and to relieve pressure, you run to the nearest restroom. If the kidneys did not remove them, these wastes would build up in the blood and cause major damage the human body. Chemicals like sodium, phosphorus, and potassium are 60 | CYCLEPATHMAG.COM


all measured by the kidneys and released back into the blood to return to the body. In this way, the kidneys regulate the body’s level of these substances. The right balance is necessary for life. Serious health problems occur when people have less than twenty five percent of their kidney function. When the kidney function drops below 10 to 15 percent, a person needs some form of renal replacement therapy, this would be either a blood-cleansing treatment called dialysis or a kidney transplant to sustain life. Your kidneys are located at the back of the abdomen on either side of your spine. The rib cage and the strong muscles of the lower back protect the kidneys. This location protects the kidneys from many external forces. They are well padded for a reason — kidneys are highly vascular organs, which means that they have a large blood supply. If injury occurs, severe bleeding may result. Cleaning products, solvents, and fuels should be used in a well-ventilated area due to fumes. Upon entering your system, they will be filtered by your kidneys and may be toxic. Any injury to the kidneys should be taken extremely serious. If the kidneys are hurt in any way, toxins can leak into the body causing pretty serious health complications, even death. To make matters worse, you cannot see this happening. Injuries don’t only occur from a crash but also from the beating and banging from riding in general. We hope we have your attention at this point and you are wondering what you can do to protect your kidneys. Kidney belts are the answer, they are designed to protect the kidneys and surrounding organs, they also serve to stabilize the back, promoting a more upright riding position. When worn correctly, just tight enough not to inhibit your breathing, these belts compress the surrounding tissues and by stabilizing the internal organs, vastly reducing the amount of movement, thereby reducing the potential aches and pains that may occur after a long day of riding. In addition to this, the materials used by today’s manufacturers provide an added level of puncture protection for the area. The Bike-Lift RS is a universal rearstand that is constructed of 1.4” tubing along with a 1 piece design plus it’s powder-coated for added protection. When Bike-Lift built this stand they went off of there experience at the track and in service shops. Twin wheels on each side provide smooth movement and will last through years of use. Available with wide rocker supports coated with rubber, easily adjustable for swing-arm width.
