From the Back of the Pack

By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman It is hard to believe that just one month from the time that I am writing this our season will be starting. You only have a month to get into shape to for the riding season if you haven’t been training all winter you will be behind the eight ball. I have tried to wear out my treadmill for all the good it will do me, seems my age has caught up to me and I just get slower and more tired. The fact remains that no matter how difficult the riding or racing becomes, no matter how much speed has been lost over the years I have no intention of quiting anytime soon. I just plain love it too much. Moto track, woods or road, I never get enough time on two wheels. I’m anxious to get out and hope you feel the same. Getting ready for the season also involves having your machine ready to go. As I’ve been looking around at the internet, it struck me that the big accessory houses with their lower prices and lower overhead are not in our best interest in the long term. Just think about always having to have your parts shipped to you, no more walking into a shop and picking up a much needed part so you can ride on the weekend. The less we support our local dealers the greater the chance they will not be in business in the future. Saving a few bucks and ordering on line is going to come back to haunt us if we aren’t careful. I believe this applies to many goods, not just our bikes and accessories. It will occur sooner in our sport since a dealer’s customer base is smaller than most other consumer based businesses. Think about where you spend your money, about the long term consequences when looking to order on line. D23 is looking at getting you a dealer discount at certain shops as a benefit of membership. Watch the website for announcements. You should all have your membership applications by now, if you haven’t received one for any reason the application is on our website.

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... We will be pushing for new members again this year so bring in a friend or neighbor, increasing our membership will help us give more back to the members. Our only source of income is membership fees so the more members, the more we can provide our members. It has been a busy winter for many of the board members. A big thank you to Steve Boatman, Angela Johns, Tom and Karen Umphress, Doug and CJ Carlson and all the others that spent so much time on our booth at the International Motorcycle Show in February. We have other members working on a variety of issues and programs to improve the value of membership, and to protect all of our rights to continue riding. The rules changes for 2016 were few: • In MX added a 35+ A,B,C class. • Schoolboy 2 class displacement change 122 to 150cc 2 stroke and 126 to 150cc 4 stroke. • Quad Motocross will be counting 80% (rounded up) of the total number of events run for points. • Hillclimb classes now match the AMA rulebook and include a Women’s 12 + class. We would also like to welcome some new board members; Lisa Boaz 65/85 class rep, Mike Janovsky 250 class rep, Jenny Ludowese Women’s class rep, Mark Olson Flat track rep, Cody Anderson Quad MX class rep. That should pretty much cover the off season changes and board business. I hope to see all of you at an event sometime during the 2016 season. Remember it isn’t how you finish its how much Fun you had riding and racing. Pearls of Wisdom from a really old rider. Mike

Dirt Riders Charity Event

Oakley Illinois - November 1 By James Pinckard, Photos by Kathy Burtle

D

istrict 17’s Oakley Dirt Riders hosted their 23rd annual Charity event. Thier events are always fun to ride, but on this day it had higher meaning. The proceeds from the seventy-one

riders, a huge load of toys went to Big Brothers - Big Sisters, helping them make an impact on young people in need of adult guidance. It’s great to see the motorcycle community come together to help out others. The charity event is a “fun” event, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find a num-

ber of really good riders going quite fast. With classes ranging from Pee Wee to Senior and both Ironman and Team classes, there was a place for any rider who wanted to compete. Any time you have an event in November you never know what kind of weather you’ll get. Rain and cold on Saturday didn’t provide a very good Halloween for the kids, but the rain stopped and Sunday, the day of the event, it was cool - but perfect weather for riding. The first laps were a little slick but it soon worked into great shape. Some riders said it was perfect riding conditions, making three hours of racing a blast. The day started off with the small bike classes. In the 50 class Hannah Heberstreit took the win with Logan Roberts second. In the 65 Beginner class Lance Hamm seemed like it, he didn’t want to stop riding and took the win with Jadan Christensen second. The starts of the afternoon classes are always fun to watch as the riders sprint into the woods. Once everyone is in the woods

team of Cloyd/ Ty England who were now in the grove and kept the lead till the end. Fehring/ Marfell kept after it taking second with Cross/ Taylor third. In the Father/Son race the team of Dylan/ Derek Thounas got the jump on the class and led the race for two laps before the team of Broc/ Bob Marfell took over and kept it till the sixth lap. On lap seven the team of Tom/ Michael Burtle took the lead and held on tight taking the win. Team Marfell finished second with Team Thounas third. The +40 Team race was all the team of Brewster/ Tanner England who led every lap, and made two more laps than the rest of the class. Cannon/ Garecht finished second less than three minutes ahead of Chasteen/ Janus. Ellingsworth/ Edwards finished fourth. it’s no telling who will be coming out first, which makes parents, fans and team members wait in excitement almost like a kid waiting for Christmas. The Open Mini class had a number of fans with Jhadyn Walker taking the win. Jhak Walker finished second with Nick Rutledge third, and Camden Thomas fourth. Brittany Grobagh took the win in the Women’s class. In the Ironman C class Kelby Trobridge was rocking it on his Suzuki, taking the class win. Dalton Garecht finished second with Yamaha rider Chuck Cobb third and John McCarty fourth. The C Team race is always a huge class and being C riders, anything can happen. The team of Glasnovich/ Terny had this event covered and never was out of the first place spot and took the win. Bodine/ Gerke took second, finishing less than three minutes ahead of the third place team of Hittle and Rice. The A Ironman was a one man show with Jarred Hall smoking around the track. The A Team race was something to watch

for sure as every team finished within seven minutes of each other after three hours. The Team of Janus/ Reid took the win with a two minute lead over Kaylor/ Harmon. Third went to Daniels/ Stuenkel with Toberman/ Duff fourth. The B Ironman class had Dave Moose out front of the race for two laps. On lap three Doug Propper got into the lead and he wouldn’t give that spot up the rest of the race. Moose had trouble and dropped to fourth as Mike Neibrugge did a great job to finish second with Tyson Roth third. The B Team race was full of action as the team of Cloyd/ Ty England came around in the lead on the first lap. At the end of the second lap it was the team of Fehring/ Marfell out front. At the end of the third lap it was the team of Miller/ Wroblewski. So who would be in the lead on the fourth lap? It was the

Fremont Opens CWIRA Season

#96 Alec Muth on the outside of #5 Clayton Vonmoos and #91 Jesse Leu, had a great day topping both Pro classes.

Fremont, Wisconsin - January 17

A

s many of us were actually happy with the very warm start to our winter, ice racers had a greatly different view on it. For those riders that either make the transition to winter racing, or make this their only time to race, their season is already a short one. The Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association runs a very popular series, always looking to kick off the first weekend of January. Not only did they miss that weekend, but the following as well. Having two weekends blow out of a ten

week season sucks, in part because there’s no guarantee you won’t have a heavy snow, or tremendously cold weekend steal another racing opportunity during the next few weeks. As the third weekend of January rolled around, that very cold weather arrived. It created enough ice for the shallow lake used in Fremont, WI, but created a different problem. Wind, and temps below zero before the windchill aren’t overly inviting. The weather hurt the turnout, but the club made the right decision to run the race. A show of hands at rider’s meeting confirmed that... everyone there

wanted to race. Heck with the cold weather... everyone wanted this season to finally kick-off, and it surely did. Racing on the GP course got it all started, before everyone returned to the conventional oval. Graham Eichmiller took the first moto win in the Open Quad GP race ahead of Tyler Martin. When they came off the line in moto two, Martin had the best jump as Eichmiller got pinched coming into the first tight corner, dropping to third behind Lucas Emlining who finished fourth in the first outing. By the second lap Martin had taken full advantage of a clear track to open a gap as Eichmiller was all over the course looking for a way around Emlining. In the third lap, as they went to the tight switchback corners Eichmiller managed to get a wheel under Emlining and force his way into second. Martin rode to the overall with his nice 2-1 score. Jack Potter put his Husqvarna through two good motos for the Open Amateur GP overall ahead of Corey Schroeder. Later in the day, they tangled in the Vet class... not uncommon for these two long time friends. Once again, Potter had it all flowing right, and won both outings for his second overall of the day. Black River Falls, WI rider Alec Muth is always a threat in the Pro motorcycle classes, today he was unstoppable. It CYCLE USA, March 2016

#8 James Helgeson leads the first moto of the Pro/Am Rubber class. If you’ve never seen the unstudded guys get around the ice, you need to do it.

On a day when it was as cold as it was, started in Open Pro, where he won both the Pro/Am non-studded quad guys put motos. Jesse Leu kept it close early on, on a show that brought spectators back but had his hands full as Clayton Vontrackside, out of their warm vehicles. moos and Austin Hamburgur stayed close After winning the first moto, James each lap. The pressure Leu had of having Helgeson left the door open with probto keep an eye over his shoulder allowed lems that put him at the back of the pack Muth to open a gap by the end. The same in moto two. Jim Falke, Dylan Schmidt played out in the 450 Pro class, this time and Devin Borski all sensed opportunity, with Cody Funk running in fourth behind and were in contention for the overall. Vonmoos. Muth topped all four motos Lap after lap the three were close, as for a perfect day. Schmidt got into the lead late in the laps As consistent as some of the riders with Borski on his back fender. A lap were in topping multiple motos, the Open later Borski re-took the lead and held it Pro Quad guys mixed it up in an unusual to the end by the slightest of margins. manner. Marshfield, WI’s Mike Mueller His first moto fourth was his downfall won the first moto ahead of Graham Eichmiller, Tyler Martin and Craig Melville. Off Jack Potter won two classes in addition to pulling his usual worker the line in moto two, duties as a volunteer at the event. Mellville had a wheel into the first fast corner and came out in front of Mueller and Martin. A lap later and Melville had just over a quad length gap over a very close battle for second. Martin continued to push Mueller each lap, but in the end all it did was allow Melville to pull away for the win. Mueller rode a perfectly smart race for second, all he needed for the overall (1-2) ahead of Melville. 10

CYCLE USA, March 2016

though, as Schmidt’s 2-2 consistency took home the gold. Borski wouldn’t be denied a victory today though, as he continued his successful second round of motos in the Outlaw Rubber Quad class. After settling for third in the first moto behind Helgeson and Jeremy Flees, Borski was ready. Helgeson took the early lead with Borski in his draft. Into the second lap Helgeson lost traction coming into turn two and spun way out of the main line. Borski took over out front. Flees was also on a roll, coming up past John Goff for third, then eventually locking down second. Borski and Flees tied in points, but Borski’s second moto win earned him the overall. The Open B motorcycle results didn’t show the uniqueness of this race, but it was pretty cool. It came down to a battle of two upcoming young ladies... Sierra Heindl and Megan Funk. In both motos Heindl was quickest off the line and through the opening lap she would build a gap ahead of Funk. As the laps continued, Funk would find a pace to close the gap, and put the two side by side as they

got the white flag. Both motos saw Heindl hold on for the win, but it was a nice close race up front. At day’s end, getting out of the terrible wind and cold felt really good. We usually have a while to get use to the cold that comes with ice racing... not this year, from here out it will feel normal, or even “warm” when we visit future rounds. The balance of the season will be welcomed regardless of mother nature. The 2016 season was now off and running and there were a lot of smiles in the pits... even if a few of them were frozen on!

Super Series, 2015 champions.

Spring Creek 2015 Banquet Red Wing, MN November 14 By Rolfe Otterness

T

he Spring Creek Motocross awards banquet and 2015 Super Series season celebration was held at the Treasure Island Casino near Red Wing, Minnesota. Greta and John Martin rounded up their capable staff and pulled it all together once again. With the melodious mouth of Millville, Guy Ohland, featured as the master of ceremonies it was bound to be a night of mirth and after an early meal the program commenced. First off, the military vet racers were asked to the stage to honor them for their service and grab a photo. There are quite a number of them enjoying the racing experience. Next up (and probably missing none of them) were the perfect attendance award winners. A graduation of sorts was next as the mini riders who are ready to make the move from the mini track to the full size version were honored for their 50cc careers. Spring Creek MXP lost two stalwart supporters this summer and a moment of silence was held for Linda Roberts, wife of Bruce - the “sound man” of SCMXP, and Dale Preble of the Mazeppa Jaycees - more commonly known as the “beer

man” at the track. Linda helped out for years in the concession stand and Dale was always ready to serve up a beer on a hot summer day. Dale was a great supporter of the track and motocross in general- demonstrated by helping organize and raise funds for the annual Greg Vaith Memorial Scholarship awarded each year to a racer heading off to college. From that solemn moment the direc-

tion turned to the points awards. First up was recognition of the multi-class champs. The most proficient points earning performance of the season was that of Henry Miller, who amassed a total of over 600 points on his way to championships in the 14-24A, 250A and Open A classes. Other multi class winners were Cade Olberding rockin’ in the 50cc classes, James Clough zappin’ the other

Then came the class awards, interspersed with prizes awarded courtesy of the various sponsors, without whom Spring Creek Park wouldn’t be the same. Class winners all received a championship jacket and second and third place received hoodies courtesy of Team VRM. Other bounty was provided by, in no par-

Taking it Indoors! New Richmond, Wisconsin - January 9 Cedar Lake Arena Indoor MX

W

inter made a late arrival this year, but on the second weekend of January it showed up big time. Temps outside at mid-day were below zero, but it didn’t slow the racing inside the much warmer Cedar Lake Arena. Still remembered by many as the Sandbox, this New Richmond, WI indoor race had a great turn-out of riders from a five state area. This was the second round of the winter’s four event series. The first round was huge, with 260 entries. Tonight, there was another 230, in the twenty-two different classes ranging from 50cc up to the senior and pro groups. With practice sessions a couple times a week, everyone here was looking quite comfortable on the once again re-designed track. In the +40 class, Ray Schlegel spent the first couple laps trying to move up from third place off the start. Out front, Wes Wyman led with Scott Robinson tucked in a close second. As they entered the third lap, Schlegel slipped past Robinson, and then over the large center double pulled next to Wyman. As they drove through the next corner Schlegel took over for good. Jerry Turnbull finished fourth ahead of Barry Weinzirl and Tom Ferguson. In the second moto, once again fourteen riders left the gate. Schlegel had a better start, and led from start to finish as Turnbull (4-2) wicked it up a notch to beat Wyman across for second. Wyman’s 2-3 was still good for second overall. The Women’s class had eight entries. Sophie Johnson got the best jump and led out of the first turn. Hare Scrambles regular Miranda Tweeton quickly went to work on Johnson, and found an inside line half a lap later. Once out front, she kept her KTM in the lead for the eventual win. Leea Niesen held of South Dakota’s Kourtney Trautner for third, behind Johnson. In the second moto, Niesen pulled the holeshot. Niesen, “I was third off the start in the first moto and couldn’t move up so I finished there. This time I got the holeshot and just ran with it and got the win. The track was fun, this is my first

time out here so it was pretty good.” First moto winner Tweeton slipped past Johnson in the first lap for second place, and ran there to the finish. It was all she needed for the day’s overall. Tweeton, “This is way more tight than the outdoors I’m use to. There’s less room to work up to the jumps and it is all different. We don’t do motocross usually, so this is good seat time in the winter.” Tweeton may be more comfortable in the woods, but it didn’t show in her performance, taking the overall is always a good thing. Open A was the fast class of the day, with nine riders making up the impressive field. Stillwater, MN’s Nick Schnagl was on a mission. Leaving nothing to chance, he jumped into the im-

mediate lead and never looked back. Nick Jackson held his pace early, but by mid-moto, Schnagl started to pull a little with every lap. Kenosha, WI’s Talan Hansen put a move on Austin Kienast on the fifth lap for fourth behind Daniel Cortines to set the final order. After getting fourth overall last year in the 450B class at Loretta Lynn’s, Schnagl seemed ready for this type of racing. Hot Rods Inc/ Answer/ Pro-Taper/ 100% backed Schnagl, “The A class is pretty intense. The gate drops and you just have to ride hard as everyone is out there to make it happen. I knew I had the speed after putting a lot of work in with my training down south. I’m very confident, and just put my head down and rode hard.” In the second moto, Schnagl led all the way. Behind him there was a lot of position swapping between Jackson, Cortines and Sean Hallin. At one point, Hallin flew by both Jackson and Cortines for second. A lap later, one mistake and he was back to fifth behind Kienast. Cortines had his hands full with Jackson (2-3), but held on for second in the moto and overall (3-2) Justin Peterson made the trip up from Rockford, IL a good one. He jumped out front in the Open B class, and went untouched to the end. Behind him, it was a

different story. Logan Hyland and Brent Barber started the fight for second in the first lap, and it went right down to the last couple corners. Barber got the best of it, finishing second. “It was frantic at the start as I couldn’t get the bike started, and I got to the gate just in time. I’m winded now after the close moto, but it was a great time. The track is really good. It flows really well, but this is my first race in like six years. I’m just glad I had a chance to ride yesterday.” Brian White/ Acerbis/ One Industries backed Peterson after taking the win, “I did all the rounds here last year and got second in both 250B and Open B, so I’m a bit of a regular. This moto I got a good start and just checked out. They made changes since just last week, and it is Jeff Ramsay airing it out in +40. really good out here.” Peterson wanted to send a speHyland finished third as Joshua Campa cial thank you out to his grandfather for and Ian Malinowski rounded out the top all the support. five in the twelve rider class. Moto two was a repeat for Peterson out front. Keegan Kleinmolterink settled for eighth in the first moto, but was redeeming himself this time. He locked into a several lap battle with Malinowski for second. Malinowski eventually secured the spot for third overall behind Barber that could only watch the action in front of him, as he rode and finished in fourth ahead of Campa. The Open C class had twenty one riders, splitting the first moto into two groups for one final to go after the overall. In the first gate drop, Nick Fox made some impressive moves for the win. Fox, “I didn’t get off the line very well but held it open into the first corner to save a few spots. I was in third before getting under Alex Comstock in the big berm. On the third lap I made it past Austin Kristiansen for the lead. I’m using Nick Schnagl’s advice and mixing it up in the corners. Coming in on the outside then going inside when others are doing it the other way. Just putting my head down and riding hard.” In the second group, Illinois’ Matthew CYCLE USA, March 2016

Speers managed to get the win in front of a close battle between Joel Mock and Spencer Hansmann. Speers, “After getting the holeshot I went down and then had to fight back to the lead from third. The track is pretty tacky so its a lot of fun out there.” The final saw the large pack come into the first turn, and the race for the lead was fender to fender for a lap. Kristiansen after the moto, “I pulled the holeshot and then Nick (Fox) and I were battling. He got around me but then went down in a corner. By that time I was all alone out front and didn’t need to push it for the win. I’m really happy with how I rode, and the track was really good. My Mom and Dad make it possible for me to be here. I want to thank Pro Action Suspension, Star Cycle and Black Diamond Graphics.” Kristiansen took the big win while Alex Comstock wrapped up second after some cool racing with third place finisher Sawyer Schwebach and Spencer Hansmann. The 85cc 9-12 class had the top six riders finish in the same order both motos. Out front was KTM mounted Tyler Otterdahl, after he established a safe lead over the others in both motos. Despite a fall in the first moto, Curtis Bjorn finished second ahead of Richie Conover and Aidan Schuh. Many of the riders here for the race, particularly those who had traveled were making a weekend of it. Either catching one of the practice days before or after the event. As the night came to an end, it was pretty common to hear families heading home, or to a local motel to check out the night’s Supercross action on TV. A great day of racing, a warm dinner and kicking back in front of some fast racing on TV, yea sounds like a great day for sure!

Olson and Zychowski ace Big Sandy Ice Race

Open C action, #59 Gavin Love narrowly took the win over #58 John Dosset as they broke away from the rest of the twelve rider field.

Midwest Ice Racing Association McGregor, Minnesota - January 23 By Tim McBride

T

he Midwest Ice Racing Association held the opening round of the 2016 championship season on the frosty shores of Big Sandy Lake in McGregor Minnesota, where motorcycle racer Dain Olson and Quad contender Brock Zychowski each scored hat-tricks among some highly motivated competition. This opening event came a couple weeks later than usual... a side effect of the late arrival of real winter conditions. The series usually opens in Northern WI, but lost the first couple events of the schedule. When the series finally got off and running, riders from Minnesota and Wisconsin alike filled the starting lines all day. Everyone was happy to finally be racing again on this well designed Gp style course! A motocross type scoring system was 26

used to tally the overall results from the two motos. Dain Olson’s first overall victory came via a 1-1 tally in the Open A class. Finishing second was perennial front runner CJ Wise who turned in a 2-3 result. Rounding out the top three was Cole Spindler with a 6-2 effort. The Open A 16-29 age group class saw a 13 finishing effort good enough for an overall win for Dain. Spindler put together a 3-2 performance to finish second and Neil Pede went 2-4 on the afternoon to round out the top three. Most notable, Wise finished last in the first moto, but rebounded to win moto two giving him a fifth place over-

all. Goes to show how competitive this group of very quick riders really are. The Dash for Cash has a single moto format where the winner takes all. Olson completed the hat-trick vie a wire to wire #21 Ben Suter topped the 450B and the Open B Studded classes.

#57 Dain Olson won three of the fastest classes on Big Sandy Lake.

win ahead of Wise, Pede, Spindler, Jeremiah Lindberg and the rest of the eleven riders who transformed their entry fees into donations to Olson’s pocketbook. In the four wheel ranks Brock Zychowski also scored a trio of victories. The Rath Racing sponsored contender who also hails from Superior, Wi., won

the Open A overall with a 3-1 moto tally, 450A via a 2-1 moto finish and he also topped the six rider Dash for Cash. Zychowski also made a rare appearance in the unstudded Open A class, and finished third overall. Looking back, it was a fantastic day of racing. The track held up well, and as the

day closed, everyone was already looking forward to the next event. If you haven’t been involved in ice racing, start by checking out the Midwest Ice Racing Association’s web site. Work to get set up for next winter, and join in on the fun. It is a perfect way to make racing a true year round activity.

District 16 Awards Banquet Wisconsin Dells, WI - November 14

I

n District 16, the second weekend of November means one thing - banquet time! As we’ve said before, if you’re missing this weekend of fun and commradarie, you are quite simply missing out! Several years back this event found a more permanent home in the Wisconsin Dells. While the area is all about tourism and heavily known for outdoor summer activites, the Kalahari Resort is one of the country’s largest indoor water parks. After several years of attending the ban-

quet, I’m not alone in having not seen the entire facilty. Bowling lanes, movie theatre, game rooms, thrill areas, and more water slides and pool area than you could enjoy in one day are all side benefits of holding our awards ceremony here. All the forementioned amenities help fill out the weekend for all the families, but we come for the District 16 Awards ceremony. Every year the group organizing the evening does a little tweaking. This year there were more displays set up by dealerships like Country Cycle Pitstop of New Richmond, WI. Some of our off-

road guys set up a nice Moose Racing display, and we welcomed DOC360 back again as well. Schedules were shifted to improve the flow for all the drawings as well as the order of the awards. There’s a lot to get through when you consider awards are presented for all the different divisions during this one evening. Dinner was served up at 5pm, and it was a packed room. Following the great meal, the second portion of the room was filled with roughly another 200 attendees that came for the awards portion of the night only. Once everyone was gather to-

gether, drawings began. Some really cool door prizes were given out courtesy of Rob’s Performance and Moose Racing. The highlight of this portion of the night always falls on the evening’s largest items. This year, two Kawasaki KLX110’s provided with the appreciated assistance of Southeast Sales, and a Yamaha generator courtesy of District 16 and Pro Motorsports of Fund Du Lac had everyone’s attention as the lucky winners were pulled from the bucket of tickets. Once again, my name wasn’t called... but congratulations to the winners just the same - we haven’t seen a group of winners this excited in a while. Awards presentations were next, and the D16 board members very efficiently recognized all the top finishers in grand fashion. Hundreds of beautiful plaques, and several dozen customized hoodie style jackets were passed out in the next three hours. Riders doing well in multiple classes were challenged to add to their already full arms on the way out of the room as they reached for samples of DOC360. Tonight we also recognized the special contributions of two individuals that helped our sport in very positive ways. First, the annual Lofquist Racing Award given to someone making a special contribution to our sport, not necessarily a racer, but someone making a difference that may otherwise go unnoticed by the masses. This year it went to Jon Sonnenberg. In the town of Rome, Jon promotes and helps make special activities possible like a VIP ride that has hosted lawmakers, their staff, tourism officials and others at the Dyracuse Recreational Park. This is huge in exposing our sport in a positive manner, as the park is a tremendous asset to motorcycle and atv riders. Jon is also at sports shows and events always campaigning for off highway vehicle riding. The second, and new twist to this award, called the Junior Lofquist Award was presented to Aztalan Cycle Club member Erin Bodenbach. Geared to recognize the contributions of a young, potentially up and comer in the world of volunteerism, Erin became a very obvious choice, according to D16 Secretary Judy Sumner who nominated her. Judy noted that Erin began coming to Aztalan and timing the heats at the short track races. Soon she was handling signup, and before you knew it, she was scoring those events. Then she began scoring the mx events as well. She con48

She has put in over 100 hours at sponsorship coming in for 2016... and Aztalan this year alone. that may lead to more and even better This is always a very special night for drawings, even though it is tough to top everyone attending. Be it the young racwhat was given out at this banquet. District leaders... expect an even better banquet following the 2016 season. It looks like the evening’s schedule will be altered quite a bit. Plans are being worked on to get additional space where everyone will break into smaller groups following the dinner. This will allow a more personalized, and slower paced presentation of the awards by division, yet eliminate most of the waiting some of the groups have when their awards are towards the end of the evening. Everyone will be able to still mingle, celebrate and Junior Lofquist Award winner Erin Bodenbach enjoy the evening to- with her family and D16’s Judy Sumner

Deep Freeze Hits 3 Hour Campbellsport, Wisconsin - January 17 By Dave Hollub

T

he third Sunday of the new year is the day that the Steelshoe Three Hour Endurance Ice race occurs. The weather in the weeks before the 2016 event made it look like the race may have to be cancelled, as temperatures hung in the above freezing range. Finally with less than two inches of ice and only a week to go the temps took a deep dive into the sub zero range. As the Ice God Jeff Fredette laid out the 6.5 mile course on Saturday, temps were steady in the mid teens and ice depth was around ten inches with predictions for a hi of zero on Sunday. Sunday morning sixty-two teams signed up and were ready to race. Practice went off without any glitches and as the noon start approached everyone was anxious to get racing so they could get moving and warm up.

At noon the first group off the line was the nine rider Ironman class. Team Sunset racer Lance Wollin was out front at the first corner with Jason Larson second and Jeff Fredette edging past Jay Waalen for third. By the end of lap one Wollin had pulled almost a fifteen second lead over the enracing between Roman Udakov (81), tire field and was Tight Justin Wolf (26) and Ben Schweighardt (60) settling in for the stayed out front of the Ironmen group to day. As lap two went into the books the end. Larson aboard the Goon Squad Wollin was now being pushed by one of bike ran second in the class until lap nine the heavyweight team bikes, but he when he dropped back to fourth. Fredette held off Austen Madison riding the AMP Racing LTD entry. Fredette stayed steady all race and took over second when Larson dropped back. Waalen finished in third, one lap back of the two leaders with Madison right on his fender at the checkers. Jesko Racing (Jacob Jesko/ Morgen Mischler) grabbed a big holeshot in the Middleweight class start with Team Raw, JJ (Jim Beckman/ Jeff Wick), and Retriever Racing (Patrick Ryder/ Parker Lange) following. By the end of lap one Retriever Racing had moved into the first place slot with Jesko holding off Scott Fittshur in second. By lap three Jesko Racing slipped past Retriever Racing but couldn’t shake them off his rear fender. On lap six Jesko went in for fuel and Retriever took advantage to grab a big lead which set up a fast fuel/ rider switch on the next lap. Their lead was big enough for Retriever to come back on the course out front but with Jesko now right on their rear fender again. Jesko was riding fast and the class lead swapped each of the next two laps. On lap ten Jesko was out front and held on to the finish on lap eleven. Team JJ made a huge comeback when they lost their third place holeshot position on lap one to finish the lap in Beaver Creek Cycle twenty-second overall, thirteen spots beClub rider Eric Mischler CYCLE USA, March 2016

class and overall wins as the race was called early due to a rider going down and needing transport for medical attention (he was released later that evening) just as they were going to be pitting for fuel and rider swap. Jacob Wiedmeyer of 328 Powersports, “I started the race off by stalling the bike in the start, but once I was going I tried putting my head down and passing as many people as I could. I got past a lot of bikes on the first lap but I was getting tired already. I backed off a little and just tried to conserve energy knowing I was going to be out there for at least an hour and 45 minutes. I picked up the pace a couple laps later as some other guys stepped it up but I just tried to hold my position and keep a steady pace. When I saw the leaders start pitting I knew it was time to really step it up. I pushed hard especially when I saw Lance (as the leader) pull off. I wanted to get one last hard lap in to open up some lead for my pit stop. When I came around at the

end of that lap I saw the checker flag was out but it was stationary so I did one more lap before I pulled off. The game plan was for me to go about two hours and then Tyler get on fresh and just ride as fast as he could to the finish. Thanks to 328 Powersports for all the support. Even with the race being called early, all the riders were happy with the course and the overall race day. Everyone agreed you had to race hard all the way from the start because you never know what may happen. Steel Shoe Coordinator Judy Sumner wanted to make sure we all thank the event sponsors that pull together to make the race a success, raising funds for injured riders. Thanks to Gary Kinzler of Lightshoes for donating the traveling trophy, Charley Barks of Fox Valley Supply corp, South Elgin IL for donating prizes/ money, Steel Horse Law, Moose Racing, and Suburban Motors Harley Davidson. D17 MX Season Kicks-Off Casey, Illinois - February 21 By James & Rollanda Pinckard

L

incoln Trail Motosports in Casey, IL, held District 17’s first race of the new season on February 21st, “The Snowflake Shootout.” There was snow on the track during the week but by Saturday’s practice the temp of nearly 70 and sunny skies made for amazing riding. Over 270 came to practice, and after a couple thousand laps the track was actually getting dusty at the end of the day. LTM was ready to water for Sunday’s races but Mother Nature came through with heavy rain overnight. It was a whole different track on Sunday. 375 entries, their friends and family packed the pits. Racers from seven states made the trip to LTM’s famous Classic Track, anxious to swing a leg over the bike and get the 2016 season started! The heavy rain made for tough, but true motocross as twenty-two Open C racers launched off the first gate drop… with only sixteen making it to the checkered flag. One of the early casualties was Suzuki rider Austin Cobb. Cobb got too far inside a corner, dropped off the edge and found himself in a knee-deep mud hole. The race was red-flagged while the track crew and fellow racers quickly got bike and rider safely off the track. The second gate drop for the first race of the season saw Kawi rider Kyle Lamb (KY)

grab the holeshot. He held the lead for half the race before the track claimed another as he dropped to eighth by the third lap, and couldn’t make it to the checkered. Hot on Lamb’s heels was Kawi rider Tate Nicholson (IN) who took over the lead and owned the rest of the race.

KTM rider Dillon Cantrell and Suzuki rider Austin Hetzler stayed near the front, rounding out the top three. By the start of the second motos the track was perfect. The second moto for Open C saw Brock Shoemaker hard on the throttle the entire time. His sixth

place finish in the first moto must have been motivation because he never gave up the lead, taking the checkered flag, and third overall. Nicholson was running in second, battling with Bodhi Parsons (IN). On the final lap Parsons passed Nicholson, finishing second in the moto. Nicholson’s third place was enough to keep him first overall. Cobb and his

Suzuki recovered to come in thirteenth in moto two. Way to hang in there! We’re used to seeing big gates for classes like Open and 250C, but the 65’s and 85’s came out in droves to start the season. That’s a terrific sign for our sport! 65Jr and Sr shared a split gate for the fifth race, and the rough track may have slowed some down but these

twenty-four kids were tough. 65Sr got the first gate drop and Cobra rider Wyatt Mattson led every lap, taking first in both motos. Second overall went to James Orres (IA) with a 3/3 ahead of Dominic Felty (IN) with a 2/4. 65Jr Cobra rider Krystian Janik zoomed through the field after the second gate drop, taking first with apparent ease. Rounding out the overall podium for the 65 Jr’s were KTM rider Zaden Mason and Hunter Savage. During the 65cc race, we watched Jr. racer Janick actually cut through the entire field to come in just behind 65Sr. racer, Mattson, so you knew the 65 Open was going to be a drag race. These two were flying like a couple of “A” riders. The track was prime and Mattson and Janik put on a show. In the first moto Mattson got the early jump on Janik and never let up. But

the second moto saw Janik out front early. Though Mattson dogged him every lap, Janik stayed out front and took the checkered for the overall. Hunter Savage finished third overall. The gate for 85Sr. & Jr. classes held 34 riders for the first moto. KTM rider Larry Davis maintained the lead every lap for the seniors and took the checkered. Suzuki rider Zennon Shain stayed close behind. David Frawley finished third. The second moto was all different. went over really well. Customized championship jackets were awarded to the A class riders, and new this year, personalized hoodies for the B and C class winners. The fantastic Awards Program booklet with the rider photos for all the disciplines was as cool as ever, and everyone attending was happy to grab one on the way in. The evening started with an ex-

t only happens once a year, but it is always a special time for so many riders and their families.... Banquet time. After all the racing is done, and unless you are out on the ice, or riding indoors, your bikes and gear are tucked away for a couple months. All attention turns to celebrating the finished season, and hopefully the success found. The 2015 AMA District 23 Motocross Season Awards Ceremony was held at the Mermaid Event Center in Mounds View MN, just north of Minneapolis. The new location was more centralized for our riders and families, and it was well received by all. Once again District 23’s Owen Riess pulled together a great venue and program. The awards this year were new, a canvas print that included a personalized image for all those riders that submitted a photo in advance, and most did. The awards Girls Sr and Jr class winners

cellent sit down dinner for the room that was filled to full capacity. The ceremony followed with an opening by Leslie Vanderwerf, thanking everyone for coming, and then providing a recap of the season, as well as highlighting news of 2016. Introductions of all the individuals that played a part in the evening led the way for the night’s emcee, Mikey Quinn to take over and kick off the awards presentations. For the first time in many years, D23 Chairman Mike Quinn Sr was unable to attend the banquet. His son, Mikey filled in, and did a fantastic job of running the power point presentation, and leading the evening. On hand to assist with the ceremony as they always are where Tom and Karen Umphress our government relations officers, Leslie and Mark Vanderwerf, promoters Dale and Sharon Kadlec, and the Caswells, Kurt and Kelly. In a perfect manner, as the awards were being given out, a constant flow of drawings of everything from event gates passes, riding gear, some very cool bike stands and plenty more were given away. Every District 23 member went home with something! Even though he couldn’t attend, Mike Quinn Sr was still very connected to the event, as his passion for the sport spills into every aspect of activity in D23. Quinn, “A really big thank you needs to go out to Owen for all of his work to find

the venue, and especially for the hundreds of hours he put into the Championship Yearbook. Its a massive job collecting all the photos and getting the set up done. We need to thank all of our promoters as they put together riding and racing packages as prizes for award winners. Also thanks to all those class reps that collected prizes for the event.” Between handing out awards, running around taking photos, and simply enjoying the company of all the racing families, D23 Vice Chairperson Leslie Vanderwerf added, “I thought Mikey did a great job filling in for his dad, everyone stepped up and helped out! Everyone here had a great time, and that is what tonight is all about. There were lots of prizes for those attending and great food! It's always fun to get together with 85cc 9-11 top finishers

our moto family in January - we miss seeing everyone in the winter, and summer can’t return soon enough.” It is always a joy to attend, and be part of this event. To see the smiles, and elation on the racer’s faces as they receive their awards. They have invested so many hours and so much energy into the season to achieve their goals, and this is their night to celebrate those accomplishments. We also would like to thank the parents of all of our youth racers for their continued support of their children’s dreams. The youth classes are the future of the sport and it is great to see parents that are willing to invest so much in their children. It is also fun to watch the excitement shown by the youth racers. Now if only us older racers could get some of that endless energy they always seem to have. We have a relatively small community of racers but they make one very large family and one that is always a joy to be around and be part of. Banquet time only comes once a year, but without a doubt, it is always special, and one of the highlights of every season. If you haven’t fully engaged in the sport, and chased the dream of a top finish for the season, you are missing out. You don’t have to win a class, or even be a top finisher to enjoy this event. Getting out there and racing often, getting close to all the others that participate will be an award all its own. There were plenty of racers and families at this banquet that didn’t get an award, they came to be part of the night. To celebrate, and enjoy the “family.” Make 2016 the season you join in on all this!

2011 KTM 65 ridden by my 12-year-old daughter in flat track. Installed a Rekluse clutch to assist with the transition from a 50 to a 65, had Dubya Racing spin up a set of 14” flat track wheels and installed Acerbis hand guards just in case… Engine was rebuilt by WMR Racing in Florida less than 2 hrs use, LCP jet kit installed, all new fluids, suspension just serviced by Powerband Racing, cables, and two sets of plastics: black and orange. Two sets of wheels, bike was never motocrossed, only flat track and trail riden. Cleanest ‘11 (last year of the good suspension) you will find. Asking $2,700. Shawn.Downey@visi.com, 612-865-137

1990 CR250 $800 obo. 1976 CR125m $600 obo. Both machines run well, Jason Davison, cell 608-302-9610.
