Academic facilities The Hixson-Lied Student Success Center (pictured) was opened in 2007. It includes space for academic tutors, a resource library, computer labs and study rooms. The Rod & Connie French Athletics Academic Center (second floor of the facility) is dedicated for student-athlete use only. It is conveniently located for easy access.

A great place to live With a population of more than 50,000, Ames is revered for its friendliness and its varied entertainment and cultural opportunities. Main street often bustles with parades and festivals (below) and Campustown (right) is full of shops and eateries, popular among students.


Beauty of Iowa State ISU has one of only three campuses nationally to earn a medallion (for its beauty) from the American Society of Landscape Architects. Centralized location Iowa State is located minutes from an interstate exchange meaning that it is less than a day’s drive from Minneapolis (204 miles), Kansas City (208), Omaha (131), St. Louis (295), Milwaukee (290) or Chicago (307). The state capital -- Des Moines (pictured) -- is 30 minutes from central campus. Located in the heart of the midwest, Ames boasts of a small-town charm with large city amenities nearby.


Factually Speaking • Ames is the second mostlivable “Small City” in the U.S. according to the New Rating Guide to Life in American Small Cities. • Ames is the 20th best place to live in America according to Men’s Journal.

Leisure time ISU students love to congregate on central campus and the Memorial Union (right). Entertainment options range from Big 12 athletics to Broadway shows; pop artists to comedy acts and dance recitals to operas. Iowa State has played host to acts like Kenny Chesney (pictured), Billy Joel, the Rolling Stones, Elton John and many others.

Hilton Coliseum • Iowa State has ranked in the top30 nationally in attendance the last three seasons. • ‘Hilton Magic’ was coined 20 years ago and is a nationally recognized term among college basketball experts. • ISU has recorded four undefeated seasons at home since Hilton Coliseum opened its doors in 1971. • Cyclone Alley, ISU’s student spirit group for men’s basketball, is one of the most loyal and boisterous legion of fans in the nation. Over 3,000 students are among the rabid fans that help create ‘Hilton Magic.’

Cyclones In The NBA • Since the Big 12 formed in 1996-97, ISU has had six players drafted by the NBA, the third-highest total in the league. • From Price Brookfield (1948) to Mike Taylor (2009), top photo, a total of 17 former Cyclones have gone onto NBA careers. • The list of successful Iowa Staters in the NBA include Jeff Hornacek, lower left, an NBA All-Star who played 14 NBA seasons. • Marcus Fizer, bottom middle, is the highest NBA draft pick in ISU history, selected at No. 4 in 2000.



Superb Facilities The Iowa State men’s basketball program has the access to some of the finest facilities in the nation. In 2009, ISU christened the opening of its brand new, state-of-theart, 29,000-square foot Basketball Practice Facility. The facility houses the entire ISU coaching staff and features the following: • Separate full-length gymnasiums • Locker rooms • Weight room • Theater room • Team lounge Located in west Ames, just two miles from campus, the facility is regarded as one of the best in the country.



Media Exposure Iowa State basketball players and coaches are in high demand. Local and national media cover the Cyclones on a daily basis. Almost every Cyclone game is televised, including six games that will be broadcasted nationally on ESPN networks in 2009-10.


Community Service Iowa State student-athletes are extremely active within the community. The ISU athletics department stresses an overall athletics experience. Student-athletes give back to the community and fans that support our teams. Community activities that Cyclone student-athletes make major contributions to include: autograph sessions, hospital visits, Toys for Tots, Habitat for Humanity, Adopt an Angel, Special Olympics, Run for the Cure, a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday and other civic functions.


Individual Development Developing a student-athlete is the No. 1 priority for the Iowa State coaching staff. Cyclone basketball players receive top-notch instruction in the fundamentals of the game in order to develop each athlete to reach their full potential. At ISU, we want to make sure every studentathlete not only grows and matures as a player, but also as an individual. ISU employs experts in the fields of athletic training, strength and conditioning and academic counseling to help ensure that each student-athlete is provided with the best possible opportunity to succeed on the court and in school.


The Big 12 Conference • Only conference in the nation to have players taken among the top two selections in the NBA Draft the last four seasons . • A total of 35 former Big 12 players have been selected in the first round of the NBA Draft since 1997. • Six Big 12 players have been named national player of the year since the league was formed in 1996. • Since 2002, a Big 12 Conference school has made the Final Four six times and appeared in two NCAA Championship games, including 2008 NCAA champion Kansas.
