Welcome
welcome
Cape York Leaders Hello and welcome to the Cape York Leaders Program.
Today your leadership journey begins. Whether you are new to the Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP) or are returning, we welcome you all. The Cape York Leaders Program has supported individuals to improve their leadership skills, build their confidence, and become strong and proud employees, family members, community members and leaders, since 2005. In November 2015, we celebrated 10 years of nurturing and supporting more than 700 Cape York Indigenous leaders. We remain dedicated to the vision and thinking of Cape York Elders who so desperately expressed the need for younger generations to continue their work and maintain cultural authority throughout the generations. James Fa’Aoso, General Manager of CYLP

Leadership OUR VISION
Dream more. Learn m
Our vision is that our their full potential, tal confidence to build th achieve their goals.
I
In the early 1990’s, the old people of Cape York came together at a series of historic summits and agreed that they would band together and take responsibility for the futures of their communities. Without their leadership, none of the groundbreaking reforms would have happened. Reforms that have had profound and positive impact on the lives of thousands of individuals and their families. Reforms that have influenced national thinking and policy.
LEADERSHIP WILL DRIVE A BETTER FUTURE As it was at the start of the reform journey, strong Cape York leaders will drive future reforms and build a better future for individuals, families, and communities. The foundations are in place, forged through the leadership of many brave and dedicated individuals. But there is much work to do. We need future generations of leaders to build on the foundations. While the rise of natural leaders will always be important, as it was in the past, we recognise that we need to nurture and train future leaders. The world is different than it was at the start of the reform journey. It is more complex and we need different types of leaders with different leadership qualities. That is what the Cape York Leaders Program is about.

OUR HISTORY
more. Be more.
members achieve lent and have the heir capabilities and
Indigenous leadership is central to the Cape York Agenda. Productive social norms built by community leaders who are champions for change, are available through education, training, access to mentors and practical experience. The Cape York Leaders Program assists program assists its members to build the confidence and skills they require to become positive role models within their communities. Together we are raising the standard of achievement in communities where education, employment and social welfare are low. Setting the standards around the expectations and attributes of great leadership means Cape York Leaders will understand how leadership applies to themselves, in their families, in the workplace and throughout the community.
A 10 YEAR VISION FOR OUR PEOPLE OF CAPE YORK
By embedding these capabilities in the way CYLP select, develop and manage their journeys, members will be clear on expectations and role model strong leadership across all areas of their lives. They become advocates of the Agenda - they understand what is important and how it makes a difference to their communities. The desire from Cape York Elders for change has led to the development of the Cape York Leaders Program to empower Cape York Indigenous people and families to improve their own lives and take responsibility for leading positive change. The Cape York Leaders Program offers Cape York members the opportunity to believe in themselves, to build the leadership skills they have within, and to build these skills in a way that others wish to emulate.

“I have learned how to be a leader and how to incorporate that into my work and my community.” Cape York Leaders Program has helped teach me the fundamentals of business, using marketing and communication and incorporating that into my work. I always like learning new leadership skills and techniques to help me within my role and community. Cape York Leaders Program helps connect me with other young leaders all around Cape York where we share ideas and help give advice and learn from each other. I wouldn’t have had that opportunity if I didn’t join this Program. This Program is unique in many ways and gives everyone an opportunity to discuss important issues that affect all of our communities throughout Cape York.”

our alumni “The Leadership Academy taught me, as a representative of the community, to really fully understand what leadership is. If there are some issues happening in the community you have a role to play, and how you can deal with those issues. I want to see the great opportunity of Cape York Institute Academy to continue not for the short term, but the long term. It is about the future generation and the new leaders to make sure they know what their responsibility is. We pass down our traditional culture but when I go and see that white man to know how to deal with that. We need to make sure we are conducting our duties in a culturally appropriate way and I would like to see these opportunities given to all people from the Cape. It is a great opportunity and a great Academy.

“The Excelling Leaders Program has really given me a toolkit of leadership skills that I can apply in all aspects of life. I feel very privileged that through this program I have been able to get a head start in leadership through the Neuroscience Framework. Neuro Leadership is something that will only continue to grow as research advances in the area of brain science and us Cape York Bama can say we were the first to learn it and apply it.”

“I think it’s just been uplifting to be in a room full of other Indigenous people who want to better their life.”
KAYLENE BALL 2015 SKILLING LEADER ~ ALUMNI
“I have been a skilling leader for two years. I think the program is good, for younger people to come through. It has given me confidence to do things I want to do. It made me confident to go out there and achieve my goals. During the Cape York Agenda meeting, I spoke confidently in front of my community. The main thing is confidence. My Elders have been doing this for years, now I am allowed to attend the meetings and my opinion is acknowledged and they say I have good ideas and give me respect. We have powerful Elders and leaders in my community and in Cape York. I am excited for this week’s course and what I will be learning to take back to my community.”
GABRIEL GIBLET-CREEK 2017 SKILLING LEADER ~ ALUMNI

“The program has been good. It helps me a lot to talk to people in the community, in a big crowd. It’s easier for me now; it was hard to do this before. I find that now when I go home I explain to the boys what the program is about and they find it interesting. I find it mind opening. You learn a lot about different things and it’s never too late to learn. I thought I was too old, but Kate told me to come. I am changing my life around for the better.”
IVENO ELIA

“The Cape York Leaders Program has helped me to have a broader understanding of being an Indigenous leader, knowing the importance of our culture and values that have shaped me to become a strong Indigenous woman and to lead my people, particularly our youth of the future generation. Every moment is special when I attend CYLP Skilling Leaders Workshops. I love and enjoy being around others who have similar attributes and attitude to make a positive change in our remote communities. If you want to be a leader and the voice of your people and your community, I encourage you to apply for the CYLP. Shame is not our culture, get up and give it a go.”
