DEEP IN THE HILLS CYJ ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2014
CYJ 75th Reunion!! More than 500 alumni spanning the ages of nineteen to ninety traveled from all over the world to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Camp Young Judaea in Amherst, New Hampshire on August 16th.
!
Alumni of all ages spent Shabbat together re-immersing themselves in classic CYJ traditions like services, song sessions, Israeli dance, softball games and waterfront activities on Baboosic Lake. Arts and crafts projects, bouncy houses, historic photo and memorabilia displays, bunk tours and refreshments, including an oldfashioned ice cream truck, delighted young and old alike.
Daled 2002
!
Most of the attendees, simply spent time reveling in the opportunity to revisit their childhood “summer home”, catching up with and taking pictures of bunkmates, friends and counselors, many of whom are now parents or grandparents of current campers.
!
The day began with morning services in the Buddy Levine Grove and closed with a touching havdallah service in Lou Brown Park, where attendees formed a traditional friendship circle, linking arms together to create a symbolic unbroken chain of 75 years of history.
!
Later in the night, an adult version of CYJ’s tradition of “evening activity” at World Sports Café in Manchester, NH attracted more than 200 alums and guests who danced the night away, including a spirited hora with legendary personalities from different eras of the camp honored in a “mitzvah chair.” .A special “CYJ Through the Years” slide show was a highlight of the night, along with a video montage from some well-loved alumni who were unable to attend.

Alumni News 1950’S Gerald Eigen (1949-1955) has been “happily retired here in Rio de Janeiro for the last 12 years. In the interim my older daughter has had two new grandchildren; a grandson in November, 2012 and a new granddaughter in March, 2014. I might have said that I had two new grandchildren, but that would be a biological impossibility. Retired may not be correctly descriptive of my life here, as I am still an active tax accountant (39 years) and have an active ongoing book import business.”
!
Mel Greenberg (1955, 1956) I understand from my good friend Mike Libenson that you are searching for 1950’s alums. You can put me on the list. In 1955 and 56. I was a waterfront-swimming instructor and counselor, the first year with the youngest campers and the second with the teenagers. There, I befriended Mike, Marvin Goldsher from Athol, no of Chicago, and Kenny Martin, now of Boca Raton. We formed a singing group, known
at YJ as the Four “M”’s. Those three relationships continue today. We had our own reunion at Boca last month, where Mike, Kenny and I reminisced for hours. Marv joined the two of them the following week. Collectively we shared some great stories of our adventures, misadventures with Arthur Cline, and romantic dalliances so long ago. I introduced Mike to his late wife Lois Aaronson Libenson the second summer. She was a spectacular 14 year old in my swimming class. For him, it was love at first sight and a lifetime commitment until her recent tragic death. Mike was my roommate in the ensuing years at graduate school on Beacon Hill where we spent many hours at the Old Howard Casino Burlesque house!
! 1960’S
Nate Orloweck (CYJ late 1960’s): I am a life-long educator and camp professional. I am also a degreed historian. When I was 15 years old I got involved in leading a controversial historical project about John Wilkes Booth. Now, a
full-length Hollywood movie (with the working title "Sworn to Secrecy) is being done to tell the story behind the story, in which I will be the main character (as a 15 year old kid starting out this project). You could go to the website of "Glenbrook Studios" to get more details. The experiences I had during the half-summer I was a camper at CYJ in 1968 had a profound impact on my life (especially regarding how camp should be done).

Vivian & David Weiner: We were so happy to be able to attend the reunion this past August! Aside from the good times we had there, & the work we enjoyed doing, emotionally, it was wonderful to revisit where we [irst met; where are children were campers; where our daughter worked. CYJ has been a part of our lives & our memories for over 60 years! We were living in MA back then, but now we are enjoying our never-‐ending vacation living in Boynton Beach, Fl. Sometimes, it feels like camp, as we rush from one activity to the next. CYJ will always be in our hearts! Just a brief note of thanks to you and those who worked so hard to put together an unforgettable 75th reunion. All the hard work of many was appreciated by everyone. The day was [illed with smiles and memories.....what more can one ask for? Perfect weather, wonderful people, and a tradition that lives on made this a very special day. Phyllis Shulman (1960’s)

Rachel Maltz D’07 it was such a special weekend and the week or so after totally felt like the class post-‐camp withdrawal. It is amazing to be part of such a special ‘family’ and I loved seeing all the different generations part of the weekend. Camp has been special for the past 75 years and it will continue to be special for many many years to come. Davida Kugelmass D’04 wrote in her Blog about her weekend experience. One more awesome CYJ Couple!! Buddy Levine & Barbie Bass Levine. Buddy writes, “I remember seeing Stephie's little sister (Barbie) running across the ball field in 1965 and thinking "She's cute, I'll have to keep my eye on her". 1967 we dated and then went our separate ways. In 1971, we re-coupled, married, had YJ kids and grandkids, and lived happily ever after. Wow, what a wonderful story!” Page 16 # of 16 #
