Introduction
T
his publication contains, in chronological order, some of the works carried out during my five years of study at the Faculty of Architecture La Cambre Horta of the Free University of Brussels, as well as throughout my Erasmus year at the University of Granada, Spain. These projects are a selection of the works that I consider to be the most interesting, showing both a graphic evolution but also some of the skills I have acquired in recent years.

A
collection of objects – such is the impression of the landscape that can be gained by looking at and from the edge of the canal near the plot of land. A disparate collection of industrial silos, office buildings and various port facilities. Cylène Streichenberger has questioned the nature of this project and concluded that a crematorium could not be “made part of the inventory”. Refusing therefore to design a separate and distinct “thing”, she recommended that which would complete a more integrated construction. The topography of the site and the proximity to a bridge and its slopes whispered an answer of total continuity: extend the line of the crest established by this structure and integrate the topography over the entire width of the plot by force of stretching.
A landscape buried with a broken face, like so much “massive rock” rising from the slope. A rood of earth roof that evokes the possibility of the absence of any architecture whatsoever when accessed from the top of the plot: a way of honoring the power of the Canal du Midi by being forgotten. Architecture is also humility. Holes for light. A hole for the entrance. The excavation discretely reveals the architecture. A crossing from the world above to the world within. A spatiality that is discovered in the course of an architectural promenade and made of internal sequences or external perspectives. The deployment is magnificently evoked by a collage integrated by the graphic lexicon of the architect’s landscape drawings.
To visit the interior of the earth, as if to accompany the deceased in this final journey: this symbolic analogy could have been literal if it had not been accompanied by the real research in this new area revealed by the clearings of nature and the use of light – addressing not only the question of natural illumination in a thick edifice but also developments in the technology of joints. Its level of demand, as well as the quality of its formal and spatial iterative exploration, deserve our attention here.”

ikiHouse is a concept of owner-buildable houses using open source design and comes straight from London. It uses new technologies such as the CNC machine, a fundamental tool for building projects. Cutting plans for the CNC can be downloaded free of charge from the Internet. The goal is to offer people a simple solution to enable them to build their own homes properly, quickly and cheaply. The problem is that reality is not as beautiful as the concept: the houses always cost as much as a prefabricated wooden house and they are still quite complicated
to erect. On the other hand, Brussels, like many other big cities, needs a lot of new housing and quickly. We therefore wanted to find a solution both to increase the housing density of the city and to improve the construction system of WikiHouse. The cities are full of flat roofs where we could add one, two or three floors depending on the situation. It is therefore an opportunity to increase the housing density of the city vertically. Based on the model of Wikihouse, and under the advice of its founders, Alastair Parvin and Nick Lerodiaconou, we have devised a building
system which can be adapted to any type of roof. Normally there is an interface between the roof and the new construction. However, in order to make construction simpler, we have merged this interface with a new building system. Each house is thus made up of a large beam comprised of two side walls 2.44 m high and a supportive floor, allowing it to have free facades. A plug-in is set up so that users can create their project individually or in a community. They can then share their project and give advice to new builders.

S
alobreña is a town located on the Andalusian coast. It is divided into two parts: the upper part, where mostly the elderly population of the city live, and the lower part, which is mainly for tourism. The selected plot could be described as «urban wasteland». It fits perfectly into the existing framework and contains many benefits that could permit comfortable living throughout the year. The plot is in the second line facing the sea, which reduces the wind problems experienced by most waterfront buildings and is more environmentally friendly. The neighboring types of
property being particularly varied, the choice of the type of construction is quite open. In order to take environmental concerns into account, I designed a complex of green spaces and sustainable buildings based on the following concepts: a green roof and natural, transverse ventilation. The ground floor is open thanks to a system of pylons, allowing people to move freely in the public space and offering visibility from both sides of the plot. The dwellings are distributed by an exterior circulation punctuated by «voids», providing a distance between them, one more step before
entering the intimacy of the families which also protects them from possible neighbourhood noise due to the common area of circulation. The idea of this sustainable strategy is to have double-oriented living quarters that will not only benefit from the contrasting views between the sea and the northern mountains but also ensure the proper functioning of natural ventilation and therefore facilitate a certain level of comfort for residents. The accessible green roofs offer residents a large common area with stunning views of the surrounding landscape, looking above the neighboring buildings.

Conversion

Saint Albert Church

A
t the Saint Albert Church, which nowadays has too few parishioners for its vast capacity, the parish of Meiser wanted to convert the building into housing. The first step was to identify the various constituent components of the building in order both to obtain a heritage classification inventory and also to ascertain their ability to accommodate the new residential function. The narthex being in ruins and having been converted for years into a dovecote, I did not see a reason to preserve it. It was not possible to allocate a quality residential function to the
central nave, which had been significantly weakened structurally due to poor maintenance over much of its life. The nave also generated congestion in the gardens adjacent to the plot. So it seemed interesting to me to clear this space in order to allow the light to pass through into the private gardens and to have buildings with four facades. The heart of the church is maintained as a chapel to anable the few parishioners to meet in this smaller but proportional place of worship. Moreover, in analyzing the needs of the neighborhood, it became clear that a creche
was urgently required, so I proposed the installation of this function on the ground floor, extending over 260m2 with a patio allowing the light to penetrate inside. At the top would be two dwelling units, connected by a common external space. In total, 18 units were proposed that would represent an interesting density ratio due to the possibility of building up to the height of old vestibule. The majority of the houses are double-oriented. This contributes to the thermal comfort of residents as well as to natural ventilation. The majority of terraces face south-west, a rare advantage in Brussels.
