TECH WHAT MAKES A GOOD TYRE?
What do riders mean by a good tyre? It rolls smoothly and quickly, rides comfortably, grips and handles well, and resists punctures. Every cyclist, from élite professional to eco-minded commuter, can agree on these qualities. These qualities depend almost entirely on how well the tyre’s casing is made. And the most important factor here is the quality of the fabric used to make the casing. The fabric may be made of nylon, polyestere or a mixture of these. The finer the threads, the denser the weave. We express this as TPI – threads per inch. The greater the TPI number, the higher the quality of the tyre. Why is this? tread
rubber 1 inch
More grip
The casing is more flexible, so more of the tyre’s surface is in contact with the Tarmac, giving better grip. More comfort
Fabric with a higher TPI count is thinner and more flexible, so the tyre’s casing conforms closer to the surface the tyre is being ridden on, with less shock and smoother rolling. Faster running
High TPI count means lower rolling resistance. Most of a tyre’s rolling resistance is caused by the rubber deforming. Because there is less rubber, tyres with a higher TPI count convert more of the rider’s energy into forward motion.
a high TPI casing
Vittoria tyres are classed by their TPI. Nylon casings range from 26 to 220 TPI. Cotton and Corespun casings range from 220 to 320 TPI. (See in the diagram how the TPI count maps against our range, pag.38) a low TPI casing
The 320 TPI of our top Evo models is the highest thread count currently available in a bicycle tyre. These are the tyres sought out by riders who must have the very best.
The different textile structures, making the casing’s soul: the more dense the net is, the more flexible the casing.

TECH PIT STOP road racing Tubulars At Vittoria we love our tubulars. We think they are just better to ride. But the good times come to a dead halt when you get a flat. With Vittoria Pit Stop Road Racing, say goodbye to the roadside misery of fitting a new tubular. Pit Stop is a combined inflate-and-repair cartridge for butyl and latex tubes. It puts in up to 6.5 bar pressure into your flatted tubular – easily enough to get you home. If you insist, you can add more pressure with a hand-pump. And the benefits don’t stop at speedy, stress-free roadside repairs. Once you’re home, check the pressure, turn the wheel so the puncture is at the wheel’s lowest point, and let Pit Stop work its overnight magic to repair the hole! You get a full 3 months of puncture prevention before Pit Stop eventually dries out – that’s good news, especially if your punctured tubular is new. Pit Stop also works on clinchers, and at less than 200 g on its dedicated frame clip, it’s no more weight to carry than a spare tubular or tube in a toolbag. So banish the blues, carry Vittoria Pit Stop on every ride, and let the good times roll! 8

SERVIZIO CORSE ❱ Corsa Evo Tech The foul-weather choice in our Servizio Corse range, the 320 TPI Corsa Evo Tech has latex-reinforced sidewalls and a wet-grip tread compound, yet is still nearly as light as Evo CX. • fastest tubular for sketchy conditions • wet-grip tread evolved over millions of km rainy racing • pro team choice to safeguard riders in bad weather
❱ Open Corsa Evo Tech • clincher version of the Corsa Evo Tech tubular, hand-made “open tubular” construction
❱ Pavè Evo CG Proven year after year on the notorious roads of classic races like Paris– Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders, Pavé Evo EG is likely the world’s strongest racing tubular. Instantly recognizable by its traditional green tread, now better than ever with our unique 320 TPI casing, and still, naturally, handmade. • rugged Servizio Corse tubular holds your speed on the toughest parcours • grip that never lets go, even on greasy cobbles • preferred by most competitors in early-season pro races
❱ Open Pavè Evo CG • clincher version of the Pavè Evo CG tubular, hand-made “open tubular” construction
❱ Crono Evo CS Crono Evo CS is a new, handmade 320 TPI tubular that at just 165 g is the lightest in the Vittoria Servizio Corse range, and the fastest in races against the clock. • featherweight for ultimate speed in solo races • latex inner tube for race-long comfort at up to 14 bar • cronoman’s choice for ‘the race of truth’
TECH WHAT IS A TUBULAR? There’s no mystery about tubulars. The inner tube is fully enclosed by the casing, which is secured to the wheelrim by glue. By contrast, a clincher is open – the bead at the opening hooks on to the inside of the wheelrim to secure the casing. Technically, a tubular is a toroidal form – think of it as a very skinny donut. The outer surface carries the tread, which may be attached to the casing by vulcanising – a mechanical process– or glued by hand. Hand-gluing avoids the high temperature of vulcanising and, though expensive, is preferred for top-quality work. The tubular is completely round in section – we say it has a constant casing radius. This gives it two big advantages over the clincher. 10

TECH FITTING THE TUBULAR Before you start Make sure the wheelrim is the proper size for tubular. Use only Mastik or other specifically designated tubular rim cement. Gluing and mounting 1 Lightly abrade the rim base to provide a key for the cement, clean with gentle solvent, and leave to dry. (Carbon rims: follow manufacturer’s instructions, or just clean with soapy water.) 2 Clean the base tape of the tubular with just soapy water and a gentle cleaner (no solvent) and let dry. 3 Spread a thin layer of Mastik over the rim, and over the base tape. 4 After 5–10 minutes, apply a second coat of Mastik to the rim only. 5 Leave to dry for 3–5 minutes. 6 Mount the tubular on the rim, inflate slightly, and center it. 7 Inflate the tubular to working pressure. Mastik reaches its full strength after about 24 hours. 8 Before each ride, check pressure and inflate tubular to the pressure indicated on the sidewall. Important note: Inspect frequently for cuts in the casing, and to assure that the base tape is completely attached to the tubular end and free of cuts or fraying. Do not use the tubular if the base tape is fraying or separating from the casing or rim. Maintenance Keep tubulars in a dry place and, importantly, out of the light. After riding, remove debris such as metal, glass, flints, or anything stuck in the tread. Clean with water and mild soap such as washing-up liquid – avoid products containing hydrocarbons, dilutants, or corrosive substances. When not in use, tubulars should be kept inflated to 5–6 bar (70–90 psi) and suspended (to avoid causing ‘flat spots’).
WARNING - To avoid serious injury - Prior to the tubular assembly, check that there is no damage on the rim such as crack or bent. If there is any damage, replace with a new part immediately without trying to repair the damage. - Before riding the bicycle, make sure that the tubular is appropriately glued on the rim and check that there is no damage on the tubular such as an irregularity or cut. . If there is any damage, replace with a new part immediately without trying to repair the damage. - Loose, worn or damaged parts may cause the bicycle to fall over and serious injury may occur as a result.
Turn-in to a corner is predictable, with no sudden transitions in grip; and shock absorption is better because road shocks are spread over the entire base of the wheelrim, reducing rolling resistance. The rider can hold their line into a corner and roll smoothly over even rough road surfaces – a familiar sensation to all professional cyclists. Another advantage of the tubular over the clincher is that it can take a much higher inflation pressure. The comfort of a clincher degrades when it’s pumped up hard, even if it can sustain the pressure. In sum: riders of tubulars like them because they feel better to ride and they’re faster. Clinchers have the advantage of convenience, but tubulars deliver the best road behaviour and remain the first choice of top riders. vittoria.com

TECH WHAT IS A TYRE? The familiar pneumatic tyre consists of three parts: casing, tread, and bead (plus, usually, an inner tube). Casing is made of a fabric coated with rubber. Nylon is the fabric most commonly used. The number of threads per inch (TPI) gives an idea of how finely woven the fabric is, and how the supple the casing is. The casing fabric of Vittoria’s top tyres is a mixture of polycotton and aramid fiber exclusive to Vittoria. Tread provides the contact with the road surface. A high-performance tread compound is a mix of rubber, silica (SiO2), carbon black, and other proprietary ingredients. For extra performance, Vittoria’s top tyres utilize a compound with an admixture of finely-chopped Kevlar® fibers. Tread pattern depends on the tyre’s intended use: from slick for dry, smooth surfaces, to grooved for wet, rough ones. 14

TECH FITTING THE TYRE Before you start Make sure the wheelrim is the right size for the tyre and the inner tube before fitting. Ask your authorized Vittoria dealer if you are not sure. Mounting the tyre 1 Fit a good-quality rim tape of the right size, that completely covers the spoke holes. Ask your dealer if you’re not sure! 2 Fit one bead of the tyre on to the rim. Inflate the inner tube just enough so it is round, and fit the valve of the tube through the hole in the rim. Starting from the valve, push the tube gently up into the tyre. 3 Starting from opposite the valve, push the other bead on to the rim with your thumbs. Work around the rim in both directions with your thumbs, pushing the bead over the rim. Finish from both sides of the valve, deflating the tube when it gets hard to push more of the tyre on to the rim. Using this method, you can often install the tyre without tools. 4 If the last bit of bead won’t snap into place, deflate the tyre a bit more, push both beads down into the well of the rim all the way round the tyre, and try again. If this still doesn’t work, you may have to use tyre levers to lever the bead on. Take great care not to pinch the tube. 5 Make sure the tube is not trapped between rim and tyre, and the valve is straight. Slightly inflate tyre (1 bar/15 psi), and reseat the valve stem by pushing up on the valve. Rotate wheel to check the tyre is seated correctly and runs true. If it’s not, work the beads firmly down into the well of the rim by hand. 6 Inflate the tyre to the indicated pressure, ideally using a pressure gauge. Maintenance Keep tyres in a dry place, and (very important) out of the light. After riding, remove debris such as metal, glass, flints, or anything stuck in the tread. Clean tyres with soapy water. Even if the bike is not in use, keep the tyres slightly inflated. Turn the wheels from time to time to avoid ‘flat spots’ developing in the tyres.
Bead hooks into the clincher rim, anchoring the tyre securely in place once the inner tube is inflated. It may be rigid or foldable. A rigid bead is a wire bundle, while a foldable bead is made of aramid fibres – lighter and easier to fit than rigid. Folding tyres are also easier to store and carry. Most Vittoria tyres also have a puncture-resistant belt (PRB) of nylon or aramidic fiber underneath the tread, where penetration by road debris is likeliest. For the toughest use, where sidewall damage is a risk, a protective layer stretches from bead to bead, or a specific nylon protection is added to sidewalls only (Tech versions).

TECH CUT PROTECTION: Mithril Mithril is a lightweight, tear-resistant polymer weave that’s applied to the tyre sidewall. We use it on tyres, such as those designated Tech, that are intended for use in tough conditions where there is a risk of damage from street or trail débris. Mithril is strong but also flexible. The stronger sidewalls confer greater cornering stability but don’t degrade the renowned Vittoria ride comfort and bump absorption.

TECH CASING CORESPUN Vittoria’s unique Corespun casings are the product of years of experience, clever R&D, and advanced production technology, proven by millions of kilometers of racing. The basis material is made of superfine polycotton threads. These threads have a polyester core overspun with cotton. This dense weave is then encased in latex. Corespun casings differ in thread size and additive content, according to intended use. Corespun 320 TPI is the industry’s most advanced polycotton casing, made of the a new, finer, stronger thread that requires no added Kevlar®, allowing cotton’s uniquely supple and resilient quality to shine through. Corespun K 320 TPI has an admixture of Kevlar® threads for casings where strength is of the essence, as in our Pavé tubulars and tyres. Corespun T 320 TPI utilizes the finest thread available, exclusive to Vittoria. This special 320 TPI fabric makes for the lightest, supplest and faster casing ever, capable of withstanding the extreme pressures needed for track and crono tubulars. COTTON 220 TPI Cotton is the traditional material of high-quality racing tubulars. Vittoria produces casings in the finest grade of natural cotton, 220 TPI, for a range of top-class tubulars for road and track, in every size. NYLON Nylon is a robust and durable artificial fibre used by most manufacturers for utility tyre casings. Traditionally, it lacked the flexibility of the polycotton casings preferred by élite riders but was lighter in weight than polycotton threads. Now Vittoria has succeeded in engineering nylon yarn into our exclusive Nylon Plus 220 and 150 TPI weave, setting a new standard in each class of clincher tyres. Weight is cut by 10% over the previous best nylon casings, while road feel and rolling resistance approach closer to the top-performing polycotton open tubulars. Vittoria also offers casings in Nylon 120 TPI, Nylon 60 TPI, and Nylon 26 TPI, each equipping a family of tyres at its respective point on the price-performance scale, and all conferring the Vittoria characteristics of comfort, speed, and good handling.
PUNCTURE / CUT PROTECTION With our road racing tyres, Vittoria reaches for the skies: for the finest, fastest-rolling, most flexible, best-handling performers on the planet. But as every racer knows, to finish first, first you must finish. That’s why, in parallel with our exclusive casings and tread compounds, we develop the industry’s most advanced flat-protection technologies. Our aim is to protect the tyres against flats caused by shocks or road débris, while preserving the legendary Vittoria ‘feel’ that riders so value. This is not trivial. Every added layer, of rubber or fabric, tends to stiffen the casing and degrade its flexibility. Thanks to constant research, we have minimised these effects. Puncture Resistant Belting (PRB) is a technology utilized on most Vittoria tyres and tubulars. Our original PRB® consists of a thin, lightweight layer of high-density nylon placed under the tread, where it prevents perforation by flints and other road débris. PRB® 2.0 develops this technique, using a new higher-density aramidic fibre that’s up to 40% more resistant to cuts, yet lighter and more flexible. PRB 2.0 has proved an outstanding flat-protection system, virtually eliminating punctures among the teams who used Vittoria tubulars in the 2009 Tour de France and 2010 Parix-Roubaix. Mithril is a lightweight, tear-resistant polymer weave that’s applied to the tyre sidewall.
TREAD Tread design is complex and controversial aspect of tyre design. Over the years, Vittoria has acquired the experience of many millions of kilometres racing on every kind of road. For most surface conditions we know what works. At the same time, we are forever questing for new approaches to provide riders with yet more grip and security, whether eking out the last watt of power in a pursuit, cornering on the limit on a rainy descent, or commuting to work on broken roads. Prisma C.O.M. Vector Design is our breakthrough tread – a complete re-design of the traditional regular-diamond pattern. Each diamond micro-knob, or ‘prism’, is of a different size and shape. Computer-aided engineering allowed us to shape every prism optimally. Prisms close to the smooth, central tread are small, and their rhomboidal base elongated in the direction of travel. Prisms close to the tyre’s shoulder are larger, and their base elongated at rightangles to the direction of travel. This reduces straight-line rolling resistance, optimizes grip in corners, and sheds water even more effectively. Twin Tread is a simple but provenly effective way to improve performance. The tread compound at the crown, where the tyre runs most of the time, is optimized for speed and long life; while the compound at the shoulders, comparatively little used, is much softer and grippier, for secure cornering. Aquaflow derives from car-tyre technology, introducing carefully shaped channels, or ‘sipes’, across the tyre’s tread, to drain water away and let the tyre grip the surface more effectively used in all our range. 36
COMPOUND A tyre’s compound, together with its casing, determines how well it holds the road. Vittoria is ceaselessly researching new formulations to give riders tyres with even better roadholding and longer life, in all conditions of usage. For wet or rough roads, decrease by 0.5 bar (7.5 psi). For tubular tyres, increase by 0.5 bar (7.5 psi) Ideal tyre pressure is subject to many variables such as road surface, weather conditions, bike materials and setup, rider's weight and lastly, riding style. The best way to fine tune ideal tyre pressures is field testing a variety of different pressures. One method is to use a short criterium style circuit, preferrable with a variety of corners. Start with the suggested pressure and ride a lap. Each following lap, lower the pressure by 5psi until you feel the tyres start to "wallow" or move a bit. This is your lowest pressure point. Return to the above table pressures and raise 5psi each lap until the tyres start to bounce and skip/move across the surface. This is your max pressure. Decrease by 5 psi from here until you feel you have the best pressure for the conditions. Keep a tyre pressure log, including road surface, technicality of the course, weather conditions, tyre type, brand, and TPI. Finally, the bike you used and your weight on that day. Over time, this log will become a valuable tool for referencing tyre pressures and road conditions in order to optimize your performance when on race day.

Aqua-Flow derives from car-tyre technology, introducing carefully shaped channels, or ‘sipes’, across the tyre’s tread, to drain water away and let the tyre grip the surface more effectively – a key requirement for city and trekking cyclists. Kevlar® SiO2 is our reference standard for high-performance road compounds. It has a high silica (SiO2) content and an admixture of microscopic Kevlar particles. The result is an outstanding blend of all–conditions high grip, low rolling resistance, and high mileage. wear resistance ❚ ❚ ❚ ❚ ❚
