NFC
NFC stands for Near Field Communication.
NFC let’s your phone to interact with NFC enabled devices in close range. It operates within a radius of about 4 cm and provides a wireless connection between two devices. This enables a two-way communication, with both devices involved being able to send and receive information. NFC doesn't cost anything to use and does not rely on WIFI, Bluetooth etc.
How do I know if my Android smartphone has NFC?
It's very simple. Go to Settings > More or Settings > Wireless & Networks and see if there's an NFC option hiding in there. Most NFC enabled devices places NFC logo on their front or rear panels, too.
How NFC work and how to use it? Ever wondered what makes tap-and-go services like Android Pay work? As much as it seems like pure magic, actually isn't. So what exactly it is? It is a method of wireless data transfer called NFC (Near field communication)
that first detects and then enables technology in close proximity to communicate without the need for an internet connection. It's easy, fast and works magically.
How Does NFC Work? NFC chip operates as one
part of a wireless link. Once activated by another chip, data can be transferred between devices when held
a few centimeters from each other.
NFC consumes very less amount of power. it's much more powerefficient than other wireless communication types. NFC works to identify us by our enabled cards and devices.
How can I use NFC right now? For contactless payments NFC chips stocked inside credit cards are nothing new. Most recent use case for NFC is with smartphones and smart watches as a way to digitize your entire wallet.
Every mobile OS has a own app or set of apps that offer unique NFC functionality. Android users can use Android Pay which works on many Android phones and watches. Android Users have the widest variety to choose from.
Samsung phone users can use Samsung Pay, which operates similarly like Android Pay.
NFC functionality is not only limited to payments only. Android Beam on Android OS allows for the transfer of photos, contacts and directions by holding two phones together.
iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus onwards and Apple Watch, Apple Watch 2 also have NFC functionality with limited use so far, as it's only usable for Apple Pay.
Microsoft Wallet is also available to Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile users, though currently this is only available in the US.
Looking toward the future, it's possible that NFC chips could be used to replace every card in your wallet.
That means the unique info on your frequent shopper loyalty cards, library card, business cards and the like could be contained and transmitted simply via NFC. Already many such cards are being digitized.
Some problems with NFC on Android Since not all NFC chips are located in the same place, resulting in some exploratory rubbing between devices.
Cross-compatibility between devices is not universal, especially when it comes to specific file types
