PHASE 1 : THE NARRATIVE

A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE Department of Food Culture Preservation

Malaysia is a multiracial country that is well-known for its vibrant and diverse flavours, assorted influences and rich history. Food is necessary for survival, but in the context of Malaysia, it is a unique culture altogether. As a result of prolonged exposure to cultural diffusion, numerous authentic malaysian dishes were created, thereby exhibiting various cooking styles which resulted in a fusion of aroma and spices. However, to some extent, straying too far away from malaysian roots due to the very same trend could be a potential threat to local heritage. Now, in a few years time, can you reimagine Malaysia without the iconic dishes mentioned earlier in their purest form? What happens when the future generation decides to turn their backs on where it all started? What happens when there is a lack of potential successors to inherit a legacy that represents Malaysia in its most unique state? Put it simply, what if the Malaysian food culture had reached the point where millenials pose questions like “what is nasi lemak?” while standing in the very same ground that it was originated from? “A Trip Down Memory Lane” from the Department of Local Food Heritage brings a revamped local food experience to fellow diners while educating them about the origins of Malaysian Food Culture through their very own taste buds. The department was created to preserve specific types of food, or more importantly, the cooking styles or recipes that holds a degree of significance to a family business but lacked a viable successor to sustain their legacy. As a result, the department could serve as a sanctuary to prevent iconic Malaysian dishes from being forgotten in the midst of the current food fusion trend. The Malaysian food culture holds true as of today as one of the unique and defining traits of what makes Malaysia interesting. As the saying goes, “we never know what we have until itʼs gone”, therefore it is never too late to take some time off and reminisce our local roots, only then we will truly learn how to appreciate our identity.

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA Malaysia is a multiracial country that is well-known for its vibrant and diverse flavours, assorted influences and rich history. When it comes to food, it is undoubtedly a necessity to many; but in Malaysia, it is a unique culture on its own. Its Multiracial origin gave rise to numerous authentic malaysian dishes stemming from multiple race and ethnic groups.

BINGO STALL

FOOD STALL

The bingo game caters for 10 pax per round and contestants are seated on a long table not too far from the bingo machine. The spherical bingo cage located at the center stage contains random numbered bingo balls which will be mixed via the rolling motion of the bingo cage.

The food stalls in the feast bazaar offers a variety of local favourites, but the method of interaction between the customers and their food takes a unique little twist. Food is delivered to customers via the immobile conveyor belt which will only move when customers pedal the hand reel, much like a bicycle pedalling motion, which then allows them to proceed to their respective dining tables in the second floor upon collection. This creates a semi-automated and personalised experience for customers to work towards their food, thereby increasing hunger levels and at the same time, enhancing satisfaction upon consumption.

REFLECTION This module was stressful to say the least, but nevertheless I was grateful for the lessons learnt and the outcome that it has given me. Firstly, I would like to thank my lecturers Mr Vickram and Ms Yasmin, who had given me tremendous amount of support and guidance in arriving at the finalization of this project. I am grateful to be given this opportunity to learn under such experienced lecturers in their respective fields. “A Trip Down Memory Lane” is a proposed project for the country to be more appreciative towards local cultural heritage that revolves around food and it is also a place to preserve timeless and invaluable food recipes for the next generation to experience a blast from the past or rather, a glimpse of what their ancestors are capable of. In my opinion, this project is the most interesting project in the entire semester as I had to compare other food projects that I previously did. Furthermore, what really sparked my interest was that I was given the choice to choose my design topic based on my personal interest; which in this case is about FOOD. I strongly believe that food is the essence of Malaysian culture and with further research, my opinion was justified even further as I learnt a lot about the food culture. What is even more interesting was the fact that Malaysians, for the love of food, donʼt mind travelling for a few hours to other states like Penang just to indulge themselves in famous savory food even though they still can find it in local hawker centers located all around KL. Last but not least, I will admit that I have improved a lot on my visual representation aspect, especially in photoshop and 3DS Max. Not only have I realized it on my own, I was elated to receive praise from my lecturers and friends as well for the accomplished jobs. I was really glad that although having faced many obstacles in the process, the hard work invested paid off in the end. I hope that with my project proposal is able to spark further inspiration to other designers within the same community and interests to raise awareness on the importance of a countryʼs culture and in the context of Malaysia, the food culture that brings each other much closer.
