We care: about the country and culture Corobici came from Corobici is a river in Costa Rica. Evoking images of natural beauty, this river was a natural choice to represent our line of natural beauty products.

Cocobolo is a tree that is treasured by Costa Ricans, and varies in color from a rich orange-red to a deep chocolate brown. It is also the sustainable wood that Corobici’s containers are carved from. 14

People of Costa Rica are a mixture of multiple nationalities, mostly white/mestizo (which is a mix of European and American Indian). A small percentage is Afro-American, American Indian, and Chinese.

Spanish is the predominant language.

Chorutega are the indigenous people in Costa Rica. They are said to have originated from Cholula in Mexico. Unlike other countries of that area, Costa Rica did not have Mayans, Incans, Aztecs, or other major indigenous people inhabit their country.

Chocolate, including the cocoa for Corobici, is harvested in places such as Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. Most is harvested along the Caribbean lowlands. The beans were considered so valuable in ancient Costa Rica they were used as currency. 16

We care: where our products come from When it comes to Corobici, we want our product to be beautiful, inside and out. That’s why we source our cocoa and other fine ingredients strictly from companies dedicated to treating their workers, and their products with care. Corobici also partners with the World Cocoa Foundation to further the validity of our efforts, and to bring you guilt-free beauty.

The purpose: of this book was first to provide a look into the Costa Rican based product line Corobici, which happens to be completely imaginary. However, the process used to create this fictional line was all but imaginary, so here is a look at a couple of the ideas that drove this product line and book.

The evolution of the Corobici pattern

24

A purposeful integration of all the letters making up Corobici’s name created the energetic pattern used on packaging. This pattern mimics the energy and patterns in Costa Rica’s colors and cultural art.

My angle: on this project I wanted to unify this book using similar elements throughout, but didn’t know what to use. Then I realized, why not pull from the corobici pattern itself? So I decided to use the corobici pattern’s angle. I mirrored the angle of the pattern in the cropping of pictures and even some of the text.
