2010-11 SEASON PREVIEW
“
We have talked to the team about creating your ending. The ending is created by the daily work and sacrifice. We want to have a storybook ending.”
A
s we head into this season I am filled with optimism. The optimism comes from the fact that we return eight players with college experience. Rarely does this happen at the community college level. So the word that may define our season is experience. Experience could be what makes this season special. In regards to the 20102011 Chargers, experience could play out in many levels. Will this experience show in practice, in the team room, in the weight room, and in the classroom? Experience should lead to improved mature actions and decision making. If it does, the Chargers could a team to be reckoned with. Last year, we had a great deal of talent and yet lacked experience. Many times we lacked the maturity to reach our full potential as a team. It was evident in the fact that we lost seven games by two points or less. This year’s team needs to be mature enough to set a standard of excellence and keep chasing it. This team needs to hold each other accountable to the Charger way, be loyal to each other, and stay together in tough times; easier said than done obviously. Quite honestly last year was a season of un-met expectations. That team
2
knows what they could have done better to reach those expectations. The key is to make those changes this season. There is a quote: “Some years provide the question, other years the answer.” My hope for the team this year is they find the answers. It will only come from self evaluation and self improvement. If the off-season is any indication they are looking for answers. Top to bottom this team comes in as the most fit team I’ve ever had at Cypress. The players have put the time in and have come back better players. There is tremendous buy-in to make this a special season. Leading us to the special season will be on our sophomores: Micaela Pickens, Rachel Sweezy, Debbie Chavez, Elisepa Ete’aki, Ashley Zaragoza, Sareen Ohanian, Lindsay Lee, and Mia Chiaro. They all know what it takes to compete at this level and be successful in the always tough Orange Empire conference. How they lead our newcomers will be key. Speaking of our newcomers; two of which are not totally new, Ericka ArroyoVilleza was a redshirt for us last year and Diana Vera played for Golden West College three years ago before they dropped the women’s program. They both also add to our experience.
Our newcomers have fit right in.
Cypress College Chargers Women’s Basketball
They are a hard working and competitive bunch. They include: Teriyanna Boddie, Jonell Bowers, Page Rhodes, Donna Ka’anoi, Brooke Ponting, and Jessica Romero. This season’s schedule will test our maturity and experience. We open up in the Pasadena City Tournament and the following weekend we head to the Merced tournament which includes many of the north’s toughest teams. Rounding out November will be a couple single games versus a strong Canyons team and cross town rival Long Beach City College. December includes three tournaments: The Lady Charger Classic, the Antelope Valley Tournament, and the Grossmont Tournament as the final tune-ups for the OEC conference, in my opinion the toughest conference top to bottom in the state. We have talked to the team about creating your ending. The ending is created by the daily work and sacrifice. We want to have a storybook ending. In order to do that, we must improve daily, weekly, and monthly, to be where we want at the end, especially given the fact that only two teams will be taken from each region for the State Tournament. If the Chargers use their experience, add to it throughout the course and the season, we could produce that special season.
HEAD COACH MARGARET MOHR
MARGARET MOHR Head Coach 13th Season Long Beach State
M
argaret Mohr has the Lady Chargers running strong with over a decade of experience directing the Cypress College women’s basketball program. In 200405, Mohr led the underdog Chargers to her first State Championship. She also took the college to seven consecutive post-season appearances. Mohr has led Cypress to two Orange Empire Conference Championships (2006, 2009), the program’s first OEC championships since 1988. She surpassed the 200 win milestone at Cypress in 2010 with a defeat of Saddleback on January 13th. Throughout both her playing and coaching career, Mohr has been no stranger to basketball success. Her high school playing career laid the foundation for the future, leading La Reina High of Thousand Oaks to the 1983 Southern Section Class 1A title and earning both CIF-SS and National Catholic Player of the Year honors. She was inducted into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame on June 19, 2004.

Mohr then played for legendary coach Joan Bonvincini at Long Beach State and helped lead the 49ers
career as an assistant at Long Beach State and Santa Clara before taking the head coaching job at Woodrow Wilson High in Long Beach, guiding the Lady Bruins to a pair of Moore league titles and a CIF runner-up finish. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Mohr was given the unique opportunity to be an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. At the Sparks she had the opportunity to coach such names as Lisa Leslie and Chamique Holdsclaw. Her goals for the Lady Chargers’ program remain the same: to help her players achieve academic excellence, athletic excellence and personal fulfillment. “I want the women in our program to leave Cypress College with all the tools to be successful in today’s competitive world and with two years of great memories and dreams come true”
to a 33-3 record and a berth in the Women’s Final Four in 1987. After graduation, Mohr began her coaching
Mohr received her Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Long Beach State in 1988, and her Masters of Arts in PE from CSULB in 1996.

T
he 2009-10 season was a tough one for the rebuilding Chargers returning just two sophomores. After losing all-State returner Quortlyn O’Neal to injury early in the season, Cypress battled to build a successful season despite dwindling numbers due to injury. Cypress began the season strong taking on some tough non-conference opponents on the way to a 4-1 start before a triple overtime loss to Fresno in the Merced tournament championship game. Cypress continued non-conference action including a second place finish in its own Lady Charger Classic. Four losses in a row marked a tough period in Cypress’s non-conference play. Conference action started with a stumble including a loss to Irvine Valley. Cypress won two straight to even its conference record and then lost in yet another overtime battle against Riverside. The first half of conference ended with a 3-3 conference record for the Chargers. Cypress struggled in the second half winning just two and ending conference in a three-way fourth place tie. The Chargers just barely earned a playoff bid as the last team to qualify. They earned a spot in the regional play-in game at Santa Monica playing for the right to move on to the first round of playoffs. Cypress upset the higher seeded Corsairs with a late run to win 74-69. Cypress had to travel to Ventura next to take on the top seeded Pirates in front of a hostile crowd. Ventura, who eventually moved on to win the State Championship, proved to be too much to handle in an 83-63 loss ending the Charger season. FLASHBACK
The Great Eight Chargers Take the State Championship Cypress took down Pasadena for a program first State Championship. March 13th, 2005 San Diego, Calif. – The playoffs began with 36 teams vying for the top spot in the state, after the dust had settled, Cypress came out on top. The Chargers came in undermanned and undersized, but ended their season with a victory over Pasadena 69-65 to win the State Championship. The Chargers were underdogs throughout most of the playoffs technically only supposed to win their first game. Cypress relished the underdog spot and were unfazed as they took out one opponent at a time through pure heart. Cypress faced off with the 29-1, 1st seed Pasadena College Sunday afternoon. The Chargers came out energized starting the game with a 10-2 run. With a 38-26 lead at halftime,
it looked like the Chargers were going to pull out a blowout upset. When the second half began, Pasadena came out with something to prove going on an 18-2 run to take the lead from Cypress. Just when most would concede that their dream season was over, Cypress charged back to take the lead for good and win by 4. The sophomores came up big for the Championship. Despite struggling through the first two games of the tournament with a broken toe, Rosalyn Omoruyi stepped up when it counted the most to be the leading scorer and rebounder of the game with 23 points and 14 rebounds. All State Tournament selection Mia Seagraves contributed some big baskets with 17 points while the Tournament MVP selection Brittany Imaku contributed 8 assists to go along with her 8 points. Long distance shooter Ruta Autele hit 2 threepointers from the field and Paula Reed clogged up the middle on defense and grabbed 6 defensive rebounds. Reserve guard Niann Hill produced a key bucket in her limited minutes. The freshmen were not to be outdone as they showed what to look out for next year. All-state forward Ana Fakatou put up 10 points and 8 rebounds while threesport athlete Brianna James grabbed 5 rebounds. Head coach Margaret Mohr and her Great Eight Chargers end their season with the team’s first State Championship and a record of 28-5.
