Women’s Soccer Beats the Clock, SB Valley to Return to State Finals Women’s soccer team headed to Sacramento after advancing to CCCAA State Championship for 14th time in 20 years. The clock was about to strike midnight on the Cinderella run through the California Community College Athletic Association’s Southern Regional Playoffs by the No. 11 seed Cypress College women’s soccer team. Instead, a dramatic, come-from-behind victory propelled the Chargers into the CCCAA Women’s Soccer State Championship Tournament in Sacramento this weekend. The team advances for the fourteenth time in 20 years with the victory over No. 15 seed San Bernardino Valley College at Ray Haas Field at Cypress College last Saturday (November 26, 2011). This is the first trip back to the women’s soccer State Championship Tournament since 2006. The Chargers trailed defending state champion San Bernardino Valley College 1-0, after 90 minutes of regulation and a couple minutes of stoppage time. Cypress freshman Stephanie Villasenor sent the standing-room only crowd at Ray Haas field into an uproar when she got the Wolverines goalie to bite on a fake and drilled a shot to the

back of the net to tie the game just before stoppage time expired. Two minutes into the first overtime period, Cypress appeared to take a 2-1 lead on a goal that was called off on a controversial offsides penalty. After 90-plus minutes of regulation, and 30-plus minutes of overtime, the teams went to penalty kicks for a second straight year. Adding to the drama, freshman Michelle Mendez, despite never having defended against penalty kicks, relieved starting goalie Kayla Neuhjar, who played the whole game on a sore knee for the Chargers. Kayla Arenas, Natalie Farah-Enriquez, and Cassidy VanDermolen scored in the shootout to keep the Chargers perfect at Ray Haas Field this season. The Chargers made their first trip to the State Championship in 1993 — only two years after legendary Cypress coach Ray Haas started the program in 1991. Haas’ Charger teams boasted an impressive 12-year-run of State Championship appearances that spanned from 1995 to 2006 — including three State Championships (1998, 1999, 2004), and a National Championship in 1999. A Passion for Photography

T

hey say a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The world’s largest photograph begins with a single pinpoint of light shining through a 6mm aperture. Cypress College Photography Professor and Department Coordinator Robert Johnson should know.

about photography.” He’s also eager to teach a new class: Master Printing and Image Control. He likes photographing documentaries, general landscape, cityscapes and portraits. In addition to great photographers, his work is inspired by artists, including Pollock, De Kooning, and Chris Burden.

He and his colleagues on the Legacy Project, a group of six photographers documenting the changes at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, created “The Great Picture” — a three-stories-high and eleven-stories-wide Guinness record-holder.

Along with photography, Johnson enjoys music, and he composes and performs on the piano pieces for his wife, Ana Luisa Johnson, who is a dancer and choreographer. He also loves to cook seafood and barbeque for his wife and son Joshua, a high school water polo player. Johnson believes that it’s important to find your passion in life. He sums up all of his experiences by saying, “It is better in life to do something you really like every day.”

Johnson, whose first camera was a Kodak Brownie, was thrilled to work with photographers Jacques Garnier, Douglas McCulloh, Mark Chamberlain, Clayton Spada, and Jerry Burchfield to convert an abandoned jet hangar on the Marine base into a gigantic pinhole camera to create their mammoth photograph of the base. Since then “The Great Picture” has been displayed at the University of California Redlands Arts Complex, California Museum of Photography, and in Beijing, China, at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Last March, when Johnson attended the International World Premiere of the picture’s showing in China, he said, “China was terrific … a whirlwind of six days with the best Chinese food ever.” Johnson’s passion for photography started at eight when his father, who was a dentist, traded his services for photographs from Cole Weston, son of the famous photographer Edward Weston. Even after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from California Lutheran University and planning to be a dentist, Johnson kept thinking about photography. His career path changed after taking photography classes in the North Orange County Adult Education Program taught by John Sexton. Through Sexton, Johnson got to work as a darkroom assistant to legendary photographer Ansel Adams. Johnson took additional photography classes at Cypress

Rob Johnson, an alumnus who has taught at Cypress College since 1984, is at home behind the lens. College and earned Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Art and Photography at California State University, Fullerton. He became an adjunct instructor at Cypress College in 1984. A full-time instructor since 1986, Johnson is a past-president of the Academic Senate. “Cypress College is a wonderfully collegial place with good team spirit,” said Johnson. “Everyone is willing to help everyone out.” “I am very proud of being a teacher and being able to talk about what I love,” added Johnson, “The beginning classes are my favorite because you can help get someone excited

Johnson and his team’s “Great Picture” returned to Orange County. The massive photograph is now on display in The Great Park Gallery (located at Sand Canyon and Marine Way in Irvine) until January 29, 2012. There was a public reception on Saturday, November 5 and Johnson signed copies of The Great Picture: The Making of the World’s Largest Photograph, published by Hudson Hills Press.
