SANITIZING FOUNTAIN - INTERPATHETIC SPACE IN PANDEMICS A worldwide pandemic has changed our lives completely and restricted our connection with other people. Sanitizers become part of our everyday life. The sanitizing fountain provides an opportunity for safety and interpathy in a “new normal‘ scenario. The density of nozzles on the ground generates different sizes of areas for activities. The height of water jet from nozzles depends on the nature of programs. The flexibility realizes people’s senses and connections in a safe environment.

1 The Intermediate Art Depot The Backstage in Promenade
Academic Work Final Year Project 20-21 Tutor: Dr. Paulina Maria Neisch
In Hong Kong, the city of neon advertisements, public space has been suffocated by skyscrapers, and people cut off from promenades by highways. Many local artists work out of public sight, setting up studios in the city’s industrial areas. Cultural development becomes invisible. “Instagram Pier” in Sai Ying Pun, was so named because it was the visible stage set for many self-organizing art events; it was one of the most Instagrammed places in Hong Kong. The Pier, an ordinary a cargo handling area stacked with containers, crowded with cranes, against a backdrop of skyscrapers, provided a unique ‘Hong Kong’ scene. With the recent closure of the Pier to the public, Hong Kong has lost this true ‘public’ and culturally-productive space. In the well-used but highly regulated promenade next door, many self-organized events are prohibited. My proposal creates an ‘Art Depot’ in the site of the old Pier. A place where people, trams, boats and art, meet. To overcome the physical severance of the site from people by highways and water, I propose reconnecting the Art Depot to Sai Ying Pun by tram, to the Victoria Harbour Promenade by pedestrian routes, and to the rest of Hong Kong and Victoria Harbour itself by boat, the by un-reclaiming some land. Those trams, boats and the pedestrians themselves are part of the art-making facilities or ‘studio’. The Hong Kong neon sign becomes the art, and not advertisement. This architecture makes culture-making visible. The Art Depot is a place where exchanges between artists, art and art audience take happen, and where the identities between these three groups blur in a creative mix.

Context Analysis
The Art Depot
Landuse, Tramline & Coastal Line In the other side of highway, many small traditional craftsmanship shops, gallery, art education shop are located under the mixed residential-commercial building. Those small businesses brought a vibrant culture within this urban district. In Instagram Pier, Many people were taking photos, videos or movie on their own by using the endless sea as their background. They treated the pier facilities and structure as the supporting roles of their artwork. This phenomenon also resonance with the “common culture” concept. Building an art cultural public building linking the promenade and IG pier would agglomerate and multiply the art culture atmosphere in Sai Yin Pun.

Current Art industry Analysis
Hong Kong is a money incentive society. Many industry which does not generate money will be disappear in this fast-paced environment. Hong Kong artist has no space for their work. The Backstage collage, is to re-imagine the art space in Hong Kong, let everyone be a contributor of this art space, also setting up movable bars for public to try practising and exhibition of art.

Tram Workshop and Boathouse The canal was created between the site. It allows small boat and ships to enter. A special boat was designed with box container which could be widely founded next to the site as the Hong Kong uses the waterfront as a logistic pier. And part of them were still working in “Instagram Pier”. Those cranes and machines can still be seen from the site.

2 Museum of Now & Then Between Temporary and Permanent
Academic Work Tutor: Dr Louie Sieh
Causeway Bay is a fast-paced district full of trendy gadgets and products, but those popular trends will be outdated so quickly as other new stuff has come into Causeway Bay. The Museum of Now & Then is to record the death for the outdated cultural relics of Hong Kong. One part is an archive storage and showcasing those outdated items, it represents the long-lasting and permanence of created items. These are organised by size and chronologically. The visitor would able to notice the enormous amount of stuff that we have created and abandoned in any single year, the archive also shows the style and trend for every year with different colours and shapes. It brings up people memories like an annual cultural rewind. Another part represents the temporariness of new culture. The exhibition draws people’s attention to the cultural objects which are almost abandoned. It is the last farewell to a culture. The part of the exhibition is a temporary architecture could be rebuilt and redesigned over time in order to reflect the changes in Causeway Bay. It pours vitality into the museum.
11
What if... we stored every outdated relics in a museum We can’t memorize everything within our brain, We can’t store everything in a limited space. Society create many new items and trends and also abandoned as much as they created. What if this museum is to storage everything as a sample of our fast paced culture, no matter it’s values and historic relevance.

Festive and Archive Hong Kong has many trendy gadgets prevails in Hong Kong. We soon forget what was the previous trend. The museum is to give attention for the death of trends and record them all into an archive. History like sediment, it buried deep down and stay further from the surface and light, and sometimes missing information for the older relics.

Two different part of architecture often overlap and intertwine together, Permanent part surrounded the temporary part, temporary part would modify the circulation by create different connection of new pathway. Visitors always could feel the contrast in this museum, they mostly will in between two different feelings of exhibitions and activities. While looking at the collections from the past, visitors could also notice .the movement from the outside.
Most of the options adopt scaffolding bamboo, fabrics, container as the building material. Which is easy to obtain in Hong Kong.

3 SANDBOX SEN Primary School
Academic Work Studio Project 19/20 Tutor: Carmen Tsui
In this pilot school for pupils with Special Educational Need (SEN), the architecture aims to decrease the demand of academic results and encourage an fair and equitable learning environment. The school has inserted DIY programme through the campus daily life and provides different resources to enhance students’ creativity, through art and creation. This helps students express themselves and build their confidence rather than focusing on academic results. DIY creations involves three parts: gathering materials, increasing knowledge from different aspects, and creating through bare hands. The school’s design is based on these three elements, to establish spaces and functions. The first one is recycling facilities with public access, which allows students to get their DIY resources. The second is a combination of classrooms and workshops encourages students create their artwork together, and the third are special rooms integrated into large open playgrounds that give different settings and functions, letting SEN students experience different subjects in creative ways. Finally, the DIY art can be furniture, or a toy which can be a part of the architecture. Or even an artwork which could place in the public exhibition area to raise the topic of package wasting in our daily basis and encourage more public participation to the recycling facilities in the primary school.

Movement
Site The site located in the residential zone in sheung shui with low building density. Parks, housing estate and markets are the main site context. The parks and residential estate’s greenery creates a pleasant space for the site of a primary school. But the market in the opposite side of the site are stacked with cardboards and plastic package and even sprawl across the street, which makes the road next to the site are full of wastage.
Movement often attract children attention. Outside movement would be a critical factor for SEN students to focus on the class. While window opening must be provided for every classroom. This study will aftfect the window opening direction, its distance between site boundary and also the building location in the site.
