Introduction

The trade relations between the European Union (EU) and Brazil are rooted in long-term interactions between European countries and their former colonies. European states kept their influence in the newly born Latin American countries due to the shared history, language and culture, which also facilitated development of traditional trade relations as well as relations with other European countries grouped in the European Union.1 The creation of the EU helped to increase European influence in the world as the EU could more easily negotiate agreements Elisa Amorim Boaventura is a law student at University of Brasilia, e-mail: elisaamorimb@ gmail.com. The article is based on common research commenced during Elisa’s research stay at Palacký University in Olomouc in spring 2019, the article was updated in the second half of 2019. ** Václav Stehlík is an associate professor and Jean Monnet Chair holder in EU law, Faculty of Law, Department of International and European Law, Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, e-mail: vaclav.stehlik@upol.cz 1 HISTORY of the European Union. 2018 [online].
