January 2019 marks the start of the Czech Film Fund’s seventh year in existence. I would contend that in the last six years the fund has become a stable state institution and a partner of equal standing to similar institutions abroad. Through stabilized, compound financing, support for all kinds of genres and formats, independence and transparency in grant adjudication, and not least through the high level of funding provided to minority (and other) co-production films over the last three years, the fund has been able to help Czech producers collaborate on attractive European projects. For the third year now, the Czech Film Fund has included the Czech Film Center, which cooperates with international festivals, consults programmers about current Czech films, and recommends films for potential inclusion in programs. Hence, the Czech Film Center works with films that the fund has financed from the outset, from the initial screenplay, to development, and through to production. The Czech Republic may be a small country, but it is a great one. And it is a country of great film talents: Miloš Forman, František Vláčil, Jiří Menzel, Věra Chytilová, Jan Švankmajer, Jan Svěrák, as well as many others. We are the country that made the most beautiful version of Cinderella, we are a country with a cinematic tradition, and with prospects for the future. Over the last seven years I have tried on a daily basis to keep the fund ready to support the incredible talent we are gifted with. Thanks in particular to the increased financial resources available since 2016, it has been possible to give bigger grants to many uniquely interesting projects that await distribution this year, which I believe will bear out my hopes for wonderful talent our country has to offer.

introduction With the beginning of new year, we take a look back at the just finished year 2018, presenting an overview of what’s been dished up, as well as what’s cooking, in Czech cinema.
IN THEATRES Thirty-eight Czech fiction films vied for domestic eyeballs last year. As in past years, the biggest box-office draws were comedies aimed at Czech audiences, while the films that represented the country at festivals abroad were not big commercial hits. Which films made it at home, which found success abroad, and what exciting projects are underway right now? The top five rungs on the 2018 box-office chart, far above the competition, were pop and satirical comedies and children’s movies. The most successful Czech film of 2018 was the comedy What Men Long For, directed by Rudolf Havlík. More than half a million people went to see this movie about a cynical chauvinist who one day wakes up in a woman’s body. In second place, with 300,000 tickets sold, was the comedy Patrimony, by Jiří Vejdělek, the seasoned director of such popular films as Men in Hope and Women in Temptation. Third and fourth spots went to “fairytale movies,” a phenomenon typical for the Czech Republic, with its long tradition of feature-length fiction films made for parents and children. Devilry, by controversial director Zdeněk Troška, who is known also for the pulp series Babovřesky, drew 270,000 viewers. The fourth most popular Czech film of 2018 was The Magic Quill, marking another big success for versatile director Marek Najbrt. Using nearly the same team of screenwriters, Najbrt also had a box-office hit with the political satire President Blaník, a featurelength version of the series Kancelář Blaník, which was originally made for the online platform Stream.cz.
International Achievements: Flies and Other Insects And which Czech films were best received in foreign markets and festivals? One of last year’s most successful films was a surrealist freak show, combining animation with feature film, from a master of the genre: Insect, by Jan Švankmajer. After premiering at the IFF Rotterdam, the film, which the director says will be his last, appeared at a number of other foreign festivals to a largely positive response. Another feature film that made a good impression at international festivals was the drama Winter Flies, the story of two boys coming of age, directed by Czech young talent Olmo Omerzu. The film, which the Czech Republic put forward as its Oscar submission, won the award for Best Director at the Karlovy Vary IFF and screened at the Toronto festival, the BFI London, the Cinekid festival of children’s films, and others. Another talented young director who has seen significant success is Adam Sedlák, whose feature debut Domestique, a psychological thriller about a top cyclist, was selected for the main competition at the Karlovy Vary IFF. And Ondřej Novák and Jiří Havlíček saw their short directing debut, Reconstruction, introduced in the competitive section of the prestigious Locarno Festival, Pardi di domani section. Produced by Dagmar Sedláčková (MasterFilm), Reconstruction is the compelling story of a boy who has committed a terrible crime.
Coproductions: An Easier Way to Reach the World Coproductions, too, continued to thrive last year. The Romanian experimental drama Touch Me Not, which involved Czech producers from PINK, took the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, where the Slovak-Czech film The Interpreter, by director Martin Šulík, also screened. Jiří Menzel, the legendary director of the Czechoslovak New Wave, who won the Berlinale Kamera Award in Berlin, played one of the main roles. Thanks to coproduction efforts, a Czech film also appeared in Cannes last year: Fugue, a drama by Polish director Agnieszka Smoczyńska, coproduced by Czech producer Karla Stojáková (Axman Production), was selected for Cannes Critics’ Week, while Radu Jude’s I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians won a crystal globe at the Karlovy Vary IFF and was screened at many other international festivals.

Czech Participation in Coproduction Markets Numerous Czech projects were presented at coproduction markets to favorable response. Two Czech projects have been selected for the coproduction forum When East Meets West, in Trieste: Caravan, by Zuzana Špidlová (produced by nutprodukce – Pavla Janoušková Kubečková), and Plague, by Jan Těšitel (produced by Sirena Film – Petra Oplatková, Artemio Benki). Three Czech projects were presented to festival curators, film producers, sales agents, and distributors at the international industry event Meeting Point – Vilnius: By a Sharp Knife (Slovakia/Czech Republic), a political drama directed by Teodor Kuhn and produced by Jakub Viktorín together with Czech production nutprodukce; Domestique, the promising debut by director Adam Sedlák, working with producer Jakub Jíra (Shore Points); and Japan, by director and producer Pavel Ruzyak. Also presented at the Venice Gap Financing Market were The Prague Orgy, by director Irena Pavlásková, based on the novel by Phillip Roth. The Prague Orgy depicts a 1976 journey to the capital of Communist Czechoslovakia by Roth’s alter ego Nathan Zuckerman. Apart from offering help to banned writers, Zuckerman is looking to rescue a Yiddish author’s unique collection of short stories and smuggle it out of the country. Czech children’s narrative project Martin and the Forest Secret (director Petr Oukropec, produced by Peter Badač, BFILM.cz) was selected for the Warsaw Kids Film Forum and was also recognized at the Riga IFF Forum where the film got the postproduction award. The Ugly Mandarine (directed by Piaoyu Xie, produced by Analog Vision – Veronika Kührová, Michal Kráčmer) presented in Cottbus, as did director Michal Blaško’s project Victim. At the works in progress at Agora market in Thessaloniki, the project Cook, F**k, Kill by director Mira Fornay was presented, as was Oroslan by Matjaž Ivanišin. Czech film project The Pack was selected for the Asian Project Market at the Busan International Film Festival. Director Tomáš Polenský’s debut, produced by Julietta Sichel (8Heads Production) in coproduction with Ego Media from Latvia, was the first Czech project to be picked for this coproduction platform. And last but not least, The Nightsiren by Tereza Nvotová, produced by Miloš Lochman (and Peter Badač from Slovakia), won the Eurimages award at the MIA coproduction forum in Rome.
In the Works: Narrative Projects Last year saw a number of promising projects in the development and production stages that received support from the Czech Film Fund. These were the three that received the most funding: Havel, a biographical work about a major figure in modern Czech history, to be filmed by director Slávek Horák (a Tvorba Films production), received support of € 557,692. Another biographical film, Zatopek, about the celebrated Czech runner, is being prepared by David Ondříček, with Lucky Man Films, and was awarded funding of € 576,923. The historical project Shadows Country sees veteran director Bohdan Sláma and producer Martin Růžička (Luminar Film) return to events on the Czech border after the end of World War II, and was funded with the amount of € 423,077.
Projects in the Making Noteworthy Czech films of all types have premieres approaching. Upcoming fiction films include the longawaited The Painted Bird from director and producer Václav Marhoul, based on Jerzy Kosinski’s controversial book of the same name about a Jewish boy enduring the horrors of war. Director Mira Fornay then offers an intimate family drama with the film Cook, F**k, Kill. Agnieszka Holland launched shooting of her new project Charlatan, made in Czech-Irish-Slovak coproduction. Petr Zelenka is working on his new film The Pilot, while Zdeněk Jiráský preps shooting of Kryštof.

A story of a dance group that sneaks into a small town and dreams of a big world. When the door to the shiny world of show business really opens, the relationships and characters in the group become subject to a very hard test. Backstage is a film about dance, music, passion, and above all, it‘s a film about young people, their relationships, their lives, their dreams and the power of friendship. Backstage is a dance film where choreography and rhythm have the same meaning as a strong and pure story.

One day devils in hell decide to clean their home. Being extremely clumsy, they all move in a big swarm, standing in each other’s way, tripping over each other. Simply a madhouse. Two young devils use the situation to their benefit, purposely hampering the cleaning work even more. And then it happens: One devil stumbles and falls on the top of the other, turning over a jar with a sinner’s soul. The soul uses the opportunity and escapes through the accidentally open hell’s gate. Lucifer rages and decides to punish the young devils by sending them to the human world with the task to bring one sinner’s soul each back to hell. Only then they’d be forgiven.

In a single day, he has to take care of his little child, settle his traditional misunderstandings with his partner Lída, and at the same time clarify a mystery from the deep past. The ancient Beskydy mystery is almost forgotten but the discovery of a strange small skeleton brings it back again. This itself stirs up emotions in the small mountain town. But even more commotion is triggered when the policeman Topinka and Doctor Martin set to investigate the case.

Alicja, who suffers from memory loss, rebuilds her own free spirited way of life. Two years later, she returns to her family and unwillingly resumes her role as wife, mother and daughter. Her estranged husband and son don’t recognize this woman who looks familiar, but behaves like a stranger. Feelings of alienation, love and revelations rekindle her interior flame. Fugue evokes the social taboos around motherhood and the pressure on women to accept maternity without hesitation or reflection, as though the biological capacity of giving birth means that every woman should be willing to be a mother.

Local pub in a small town. It’s Monday and the bar is closed, chairs are turned up on the tables. The pub is empty except for six amateur actors sitting in a corner. They‘ve met to rehearse The Insect Play by the Čapek brothers. On a raised platform across the room we see a stage, set for Act II of the play. As the rehearsal progresses, the characters of the play are born and die with no regard to time. The actors slowly become one with them, some of them experiencing frightening transformations. Bugs behave as human beings and people behave as insects. The screenplay extends this misanthropy further while also reflecting Franz Kafka and his famous Metamorphosis.

Jo knows that something must change, and he even knows what it should be. But! The journey to the aim can be thorny. We follow a chain of tragicomic and more or less vain attempts of Jo, an outsider hero, to start living a real life. Will he succeed in finding the answer to the questions like: „Why are we here? In 1964, important secret Nazi documents were discovered in the South Bohemian Černé jezero lake. Years after, this turned out to be a part of the communist propaganda campaign codenamed Neptune. The interpretation key to these events is further manipulation and mystification. The secret Nazi archives “found” in the lake are in the film replaced by another mysterious content. The story demonstrates the mechanism of mass media propaganda. Film combines featured sequences with manipulated original documentaries, photos and animations.

Olda (17) is an accused waiting for his trial in a detention centre for juveniles. He tries to fill the void and forget the recent past. The monotone prison life is slowly intertwined by testimonies about his brutal assault of a homeless man. It took one summer night for the holiday boredom to turn into a cruel fun that resulted in death. In prison, Olda reminisces about describing the violence he committed back then. Gradually he recalls pieces of the police reconstruction, when he had to replay the whole assault. However, his memory is just as imperfect and incomplete as the effort to understand the unreasonable violence.

The film is a reconstruction of a 90-minute conversation of two very important men: Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and Karel Čapek – the president and a writer – two human symbols of the First Czechoslovak Republic. The former has just turned 78 and has reached everything a man can reach in his life. The latter is 38 and is regarded as one of the most talented authors of his country. Important thoughts the two men exchanged appeared in the book Čapek was writing about Masaryk at the time. The book brings up the basic questions of democracy – not as historically and contemporarily conditioned, but as timeless, eternal questions.

Eighty-year-old interpreter Ali Ungár comes across a book by a former SS officer, in which the author describes his wartime activities in Slovakia. Ali realises one of the passages probably recounts the execution of his parents. He sets out to visit the former SS-man living in Vienna. But instead of the murderer of his parents, Ali finds only the Nazi’s seventy-year-old son. Georg is a former teacher struggling with alcohol addiction, who had distanced from his father’s past throughout his entire life. However, Ali’s visit stirs his curiosity, and he decides to find out who exactly his father was. And thus the two old men – the ascetic Ali and the bon-vivant Georg – embark on a journey to find surviving witnesses of the wartime tragedy.

Family comedy/detective drama infused with Christmas spirit and set in the spa town of Karlovy Vary. The detective, however, is not a member of a professional investigation team, rather the members of his family (his wife, his sons, his mother and a family doctor), use quite unorthodox ways to find out the truth and solve both his last case and his mysterious death. Detective Kalina himself is present as a ghost, always aware of what‘s happening in this world. In the course of the investigation they face unexpected, often hilarious, situations and accidental twists, complicating their attempt to find out the truth.

Together, a filmmaker and her characters venture into a personal research about intimacy. On the fluid border between reality and fiction, the film follows the emotional journeys of Laura, Tomas and Christian, offering a deeply empathic insight into their lives. Craving for intimacy yet also deeply afraid of it, they work to overcome old patterns, defence mechanisms and taboos, to cut the cord and finally be free. The film looks at how we can find intimacy in the most unexpected ways, and how to love another without losing ourselves.

Fanatic sect leader’s never-ending flow of words culminates in the drinking of poison. A thousand faithful commit ritual suicide, the largest in modern times. These dramatic moments in 1978 were caught on tape which bore witness to the event. On that basis a film experiment came to pass in which the sect members are represented by children. In a “live broadcast” the film brings an electrifying experience of demagogy and manipulation, at the same time representing a cinephile tribute to film experiment milestones, “demagogically manipulating” with all elements of film narration and audience’s expectations.

Ľudovít lost his son in a ruthless neo-Nazi attack. Because of a hole in the Slovak legislation, the attackers are soon released and Ľudovít is faced with the absurd injustice. He struggles with the apathetic police force, the opportunistic judge, but also with the fact that he was never close with his own son. The more he blames himself for his son’s death, the more he becomes distant from his wife Zuzana and the younger daughter Janka, and the more he tries to influence the investigation. When he learns that the attack was not an accidental neo-Nazi incident, but involved an organized crime gang, he realizes that he is facing an enemy beyond his powers. He tries at least to save the little he has left – his own family.

The famous American writer Philip Roth based his book partially on his authentic experiences in 1970’s when he used to visit Prague after the Soviet occupation in 1968 in order to help the banned Czechoslovak writers. Despite the political oppression, the social life, full of amusement and open relationships, was rampant in Prague. The greater pressure of the regime was, the more people would resort to their free private intimate worlds. The story of The Prague Orgy depicts a journey of the famous American writer Nathan Zuckerman who arrives in Prague in 1976. He carries out a mission to save a unique collection of brilliant tales written in Yiddish by smuggling them across the border.

Who pays for our mistakes? Ordinary human happiness comes in many forms. Some obvious, some unexpected. Where can you find it and what must you sacrifice to attain it? The film presents the stories of people who have lost the trail on their search for happiness and are now trying to find it again. Relationships, love, power, and, of course, children – they bring us hope and joy but must often atone for our mistakes. The film’s several independent storylines focus on individual characters whose paths gradually intersect to create one grand story of life. Few true stories tread the thin line of good and evil as precariously as that of Jan Mikolášek, a 20th century Czech herbal healer whose great success masked the grimmest of secrets. Mikolášek won fame and fortune treating celebrities of the interwar, Nazi, and Communist eras with his uncanny knack for diagnosis. But his passion for healing welled up from the same source as a lust for cruelty, sadism, and an incapacity for love that only one person could ever quell – his assistant, František. As a show trial threatens to pry open these secrets and undo him, Jan’s dichotomies are put to a final test, with the fate of his life’s only love in the balance. A personal tale as replete with twists as the century itself, and a reflection on the price one pays for the privilege of genius.

A young, good-looking city girl, Marie, marries into a small Austrian town of Schwarzwald. A little vain for a small-town woman, she likes to dress up and make her own clothes. The town is by Austrian borders in an area, which was forcibly annexed by Czechoslovakia in 1920. Most of the Czech-speaking citizens chose German nationality at the beginning of the WW2. While peaceful during the war, the area is swept by violence right after the war. A group of malicious neighbours force 14 wealthiest town inhabitants in front of the people’s court and they are murdered. Marie and her two children have to cross the border into the woods, where they build a temporary shed of branches.

In Spain, in an empty arena under the bear sun, a black bull presents itself in full glory before facing man. Suffering to be entrapped in the metaphysical corrida, the animal shows its fury and power before at last it succumbs, collapsing into a cloud of sand. In a basement a gaunt, middle-aged man meticulously studies the motionless flesh of the black carcass. As though in a morgue, he begins opening the body with absolute care and explores the flesh of the animal as if it would of a human being. He takes out the interiors and slowly starts skinning the animal. This work is sometimes delicate, sometimes not; but it‘s always gory as the ancient ritual of slaughtering the bull.

After his return to the Czech Republic, he is approached by an old friend to help him with film commercials, flying a drone. When they reach their goal, the Rila Monastery, they decide to part; Magda intends to stay in the monastery for a few weeks, Šimon plans a solo trip crossing another Bulgarian mountain range, Pirin. A Scream as a Beautiful Song is a highly personal film with an urgent and relevant multigenerational message. A drama inspired by the life and personal development of Václav Havel, prominent Czech playwright/ dissident/ president. The film focuses on Havel‘s transformation from successful – then banned – playwright of the late 60‘s into human rights fighter in the 70‘s leading to his presidency in late 80‘s. His transformation is the key here as this is not just descriptive biopic but drama of self-doubting intellectual torn between his passions and his self-imposed duties. From careless bohemian Havel grows into mature man realizing that if he has the opportunity to free the whole nation then he must accept this responsibility. Both for the greater good and to prove his worth – and to prove it above all to himself.

Il Boemo is the story of Josef Mysliveček, who rejected his comfortable bourgeois destiny as the eldest son of a Prague master miller to pursue his dream of becoming a composer in Italy. It is a tale of ambition, identity and love. While Josef has no qualms about exploiting the passions his music arouses in women to advance his career, he finds the one woman he truly loves is beyond his grasp. In the late 18th century, “Il Boemo” as he came to be known, was one of the most popular and prolific composers of Italian opera seria. He was also a friend and mentor of young Mozart.

Based on the true case of Viktor Kalivoda, the forest killer, who shot and killed 3 people in Czech forests in 2005, the film captures the last year of his life, before he was apprehended by the police. The story is framed by a pair of the main character’s suicide attempts, his unsuccessful attempt on the Žampach viaduct and the successful one in prison. We follow Kalivoda’s actions from his victory in the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? game show through the systematic degradation of his ethical inhibitions to the commitment of three murders, he refuses to reveal the motivation for. The film leaves us with a burning question, what led him to his actions.

Tomáš (19), a Ukrainian of Czech origin – the descendant of Czech emigrants still living as an organized minority in Ukraine, still speaking old Czech language – is coming to Prague to reunite with his estranged mother Naďa, whom he hasn‘t seen for years. Naďa is a small time crook living in the streets of Prague, trying to fulfil her dream: to own cheap hotel in the city. That’s why she invited her son to come to Prague. In a first plan it‘s a story about son/mother relationship, in a second plan it‘s about being an immigrant in a foreign country, even if you speak the language. The film brings up the question: What really makes you a Czech? The language, the roots or something else?

Europe 2038. After stabilizing the first refugee crisis, which was followed by a number of terrorist attacks, the Free European Federation issues a new constitutional law that guarantees the citizens “one whole life to live”. Due to new technologies, everyone has the right of recovery in case of an unnatural death. In such a society, an “absolute” murder is nearly impossible. Ambitious detective, Emma Trochinowska (27), is assigned with a murder case of a married couple. But the restoration team was able to bring only one of the spouses back to life. Together they attempt to shed light on the case and find out if the second chance isn’t just another easily exploitable instrument dealing with the consequences instead of the cause itself.

Based on the novel of the same name by Jiří Stránský, the film adapts a true story taking place at the end of the WW2. A story of brave children who don’t want to see and understand eventual horrific consequences of their actions. Story about brave parents who are aware of the horrific consequences and yet decide to risk the fate of their descendants in order to save an injured pilot. Fear, bravery, sadness and joy of every step taken as well as constant presence of cruelty and death are the building stones of this story. Its style is very simple. Despite that, it does not become poor and empty. To the contrary, it becomes credible and authentic.

Inspired by Joseph Conrad‘s unique and for many hard to understand novel Heart of Darkness. Similarly the film tells the story in two different levels: An adventurous journey and the real picture of the journey inside one’s soul and its darkness. In order to take a peek inside the soul we must get close to the dark parts of it and win the feud with own evil. Snake Gas is a film about a person‘s own retrospect. He goes back to places where he was before, comes back to prior „dejavous“ and tries to understand his own behaviour. He also tries to overcome frustrations and worries of his most intern instincts and desires.

The exhausting journey ends in Pohořelice, where many deportees succumb to typhus and dysentery. Gerta survives and after regaining the Czechoslovak citizenship, she returns to Czechoslovakia, this time to go through the turbulent events of the second half of the 20th century. Next to the painful questions of blame, revenge and forgiveness between Czechs and Germans, we witness an unusual relationship of mother and daughter, distorted by the limited space on the edge of society they as German women were pushed out to but also influenced by the generational clash.

The sports drama tells the true story of Bohumil Hanč and Václav Vrbata, two pioneers of Czech skiing, who perished in the Krkonoše mountains during a dramatic race in 1913. With his wife expecting a child, Hanč had promised never to race again. Unfortunately, he gave in to pressure from his friends and took on one last race. The third protagonist in this story was German skier Emmerich Rath who, on the brink of collapse himself, dragged Hanč back to their camp. Sadly, Rath was unable to save Hanč. From the archives, we can reconstruct the race almost minute by minute. However, what exactly happened when Hanč and Vrbata met at the Harrach stones in the middle of the storm will forever remain a mystery.

Václav and Věra are people who differ in temperament, intellect or expressions of empathy, nevertheless, or precisely for this reason, they are spouses who go on roller coaster of life together. Through intensive insights into several moments of their common life, the film tries to capture the situations and their attitudes as accurate, daily, intimate and detailed as possible. It is not a primary challenge for the movie to tell a historical plot that took place in a given period.
