Children between the ages of 6 months to 5 years are looked after by the teachers at the crèche's at DGC. Children spend 9AM to 5PM in the centre from Monday to Saturday. •
With children cared for safely during the day, both parents can go out to work and older siblings are able to attend school. The children receive fully-rounded care, and emphasis is placed on working with parents and building positive relationships with the community.

Training Program for Teachers Each teacher takes care of up to 30 children & spends more than 6 hours with them. If , they can be trained to take proper measurements & file it in a systemic manner, dependency on the volunteers will reduce drastically & the process might become cyclic( or perhaps embed ) in the calendar of DGS! I developed forms in Marathi, for filling health indicators and distributed amongst all teachers, such that hence forth, all measurements could be taken in a homogenous fashion.
Training Program for Teachers
We also discussed the new WHO template and what the plotting indicates. This exercise helped clear a lot of doubts amongst the teachers Š Design Impact
Measuring Heights After handing out the forms and giving a demonstration of measuring height & weight, I asked each teacher to take the measurements of 5 other teachers. This created quite a flutter of activities as the ladies busied themselves, excited to get themselves measured! They often forgot to write down the name of the crèche & the date of measurement. Some even tried copying the measurements of others!
While measuring weights was fairly simple, it was difficult to get the right height measurements. It took some time for the teachers to understand the reading & the metric system, while keeping in mind the protocols of getting the accurate height. They also got confused in reading the English numerical. After many attempts, i think they have finally figured how to read the markings!

30 packet Learning +People were inquisitive about our project & came forward to support the cause. +We had some children too, whose facial expressions gave us an honest feedback on the rather unattractive colours of our laado’s +We also gathered a lot of feedback on how to make the branding of the project more visual & empathetic. +Some people also suggested to reduce the size of the laado’s as they seemed really heavy to consume

OBSERVATIONS •
•
Talking to Parents
In one of the group sessions with Community women, it was observed that we should generate awareness amongst parents about healthy food habits. Many parents that come to drop their children at DGS centre, hardly interact with the teachers.
•
We do not know if they are aware about the health status of their children?
•
Do they know about the healthy laddos that DGS provides to the children?
•
Do they see any health improvement in their children after in the past 6 months?
© Design Impact 2012
Health Report + Awareness Brochure We wanted to create an awareness brochure that would: 1.
Inform the parents about their child’s health status ( Ht, Wt and Z-score ). In case the child is moderately/ severely malnourished, it will be brought to the parents notice.
2.
Find out about how much do the parents know about what food is being given at DGS, do the parents know about the laddos, would they be interested in knowing how to make them?
3.
Do they see any positive change in their child ?
4.
Collect fresh data of the parents, their occupation, where do they stay, involvement in child’s development etc.

Big NGOs Collaborating We have already introduced the Laddo Project to India’s biggest NGOs that provide mid-day meals to 1 million children in India
Talking to NGOs
Š Design Impact 2012
Scope
Collaboration with Naandi
•NGOs like Naandi.org have been touching a million lives through its mid-day meal initiatives. •It caters to two different age group- (pre-school) and (school goers ) •In order to hit the root cause of malnutrition, we will have to target the laddos to PRE SCHOOL age group, such that children are given healthy diet early on. •Naandi caters to around 600 villages in India.
Talking to NGOs

Challenges
Collaboration with Naandi ` 5/- per child
•Naandi has centralized kitchen system in Hyderabad where food item is prepared and then distributed to different villages. •For the product to be picked up by Naandi, INCREASING THE SHELF LIFE is a must by up to 6 days ( currently the Coconut laddo lasts only 3 days )
EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES 1. Will I have to change the recipe? 2. Can I look at different packaging options to increase shelf life ? 3. Can refrigerating the laddos help?
