*Performance Notes STRINGS: • All sul ponticello techniques should be played as dramatically as possible- achieving otherworldly and glassy sounds, strange effects, and interesting overtones. • Glissandos always start at the beginning of the note. Otherwise, they are notated with ties for specificity. • X notes=Chicharra: bow between bridge and tailpiece on wrapping of D string (vln.) or G string (vla. & vc.). A prominent effect used in tango music and Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” • Triangle notes=highest note possible, usually after a quick "rip" glissando in the tango style. • In the conductor score, there are markings which say “stand 1 senza sord” or “Stand 2 senza sord.” In those specific parts, the 2 players on that stand have a measure rest to change their mutes. • The divisis in the conductors score are orchestrated throughout the parts. For instance, if there is a 3 note chord in violin 1, those notes are dispersed within the individual parts for each stand of violin 1. PERCUSSION GUITARS: *Percussion 2 and 3 double the same music, which is notated as a percussion part. An ossia staff showing resultant notes is in the score for reference. This staff sounds on octave lower than written. A one minute long video showing the techniques used in the percussion 2 and 3 parts is available at www.djsparr.com/Percussion.htm ^Tune the open strings of the guitars to E, A, G#, C#, A, E - from top to bottom. (Match the first chord of the notated music). The Guitars should be placed on their back facing upwards on a table. If necessary, prop the neck with foam rubber at the head underneath the tuning pegs. There are 3 basic articulations on the guitar. The first is with a wooden dowel or similar stick which is used to hit the guitar strings over the sound-hole. The second is using a guitar pick to strum, always as close to the bridge as possible - from highest sounding string to lowest sounding string. The third is using the guitar as a hand-drum, in a quasi-flamenco style: One hand on the face of the guitar, and one on the side. NB: You can mark important frets with white-out. On many guitars, there are inlays at the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 12th frets. To change notes, a CAPO is placed at the specified fret. Alternatively, a guitar slide is used to create some glissando effects. In the part, the fret numbers are marked above each note. ((SEE THE VIDEO for an easy way to figure this out…)) Both Guitars double the same part, with the exception of measures 133 and 137, which is necessary because of the harmonic nature of the music. A note regarding this is placed at measure 121. If possible, you can place the guitars on opposite sides of the stage behind the strings for stereo effect.
