October’s Service Spotlight

UNICEF Focus: The CNH Service Projects Committee created the Spotlight on Service in order to help educate members about Key Club International and California-Nevada-Hawaii’s service initiatives to encourage active participation. This month’s highlight values the importance of UNICEF as we strive to raise awareness and protect mothers and their children from Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). A shot that costs $1.80 can save many lives! Any questions or concerns, you are welcomed to email: cnhkc.sp@gmail.com.

Quick Overview Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) can infect newborns, spread quickly, and cause extreme pain. Although it is a preventable disease, it takes many lives of mothers and their children every year. With a shot that costs $1.80 serves as the vaccine to save mothers and their generations with years to come.

ELEMONATE! As pun-ny as it sounds, it is a g re a t w ay to a d ve r t i s e a n d i n t ro d u c e ELIMINATE by setting up a lemonade stand. Simply sell lemonade at school lunches, parks, beaches, and Key Club events or club meetings! Help each other stay hydrated as seasons are shifting into autumn weather. Trick of Treat! As October 31st is near, it is time to go trick or treating for donations. Usually instead of treating for candy, aim for funds to help ELIMINATE MNT to protect their mother and their children. But remember to be safe by wearing bright colors or having a light with you at all times while doing this.

-My favorite aspect of key club is getting to see friends at the club and at community service events. -My favorite key club memory is working with UHURU pies. -My first day of school was easy peasy and simple (unlike the rest of the year). This year I'm going to achieve more things this year (PSAT, SAT, Driving permit, etc).

Sophie Raxakoul

-My favorite aspect of key club is being with friends while helping others. -My favorite Key Club memory would be city horse the August DWS or last years FRN because we got to meet a lot of new people that aren't just from D2. -My first day of school was good. Something I would do differently would be enjoy being with my friends and not just focus on school.

-My favorite aspect of Key Club is that you get to meet a lot of cool people. -My favorite Key Club memory is the Danville DCM. It was a lot of fun. -The first day of school was okay. I guess I will try to be more active in Key Club than last year.

Arroyo

- My favorite aspect of Key Club are being able to meet new amazing key-ute key clubbers. Also, how Key Club is one Ohana and that every time you need help for something your fellow key clubbers are there for you and how you are able to help out people in your own way while enjoying hanging out with friends and other key clubbers. -My favorite key club memories are FRN and DCON. These events made me want to be committed in Key Club more.

Patrice Cheung

-My favorite aspect of key club is how BIG it is. It makes key club stand out amongst other clubs because here you get to meet people from all over not just from your own school. It really broadens your horizons. -My favorite key club memory was KRAKEN CON because it was great to help out at the table but also getting to see all the cool cosplays.

Castro Valley

-My favorite aspect of Key Club is helping others while having fun. -My favorite Key Club memory was FRN/winning the spirit stick and just having fun with friends in general at FRN. -My first day of school was pretty good and I got to meet my new teachers and see old friends again. I will try to focus on homework right away and not procrastinate this year.

D2 Member of the Month Johnson Le -I love how we're able to go out and help communities even if they aren't our own. My favorite aspect of Key Club is that we help!! -My favorite memory was when everyone was jumping for joy with their fists raised to the sky as the emcees at FRN read aloud "Division 2" announcing us as the winner of the 2015-2016 spirit stick!!

Oakland

Raymond Chu

Oakland Technical

-I really enjoy that when I'm volunteering for Key Club, I'm not only doing something I enjoy doing, but I am also putting effort into making the world a better place - bit by bit. -My favorite memory of Key Club, I would say, was and is still one of the DCMs during my freshman year in Key Club and in high school, where the current president, Carlos, really pushed me to socialize and get to know other people in Key Club.

Annika Heuser -My favorite aspect of Key Club is that rather than volunteering alone, which I used to do, I can go to a lot more events with friends. I feel a lot more comfortable at events when I'm there with people I know. -I don't have too many Key Club memories yet but I really liked getting free muffins at the Oakland Triathlon this summer, which was my first Key Club event!

D2 Member of the Month Ruby Chin

San Leandro

-My favorite aspect of key club is getting to help the community and meeting new people and seeing our ohana grow each day. -My favorite key club memory is working at the "It's a Wonderful Night" event held in downtown San Leandro during the holidays since it gave everyone a sense of joy and happiness. -My first day of school was a hot mess, and this school year I'll definitely study more and put more effort into my school work .

Anika Hua

-My favorite aspect of Key Club is that everything is all chill and you get to experience new jobs. -My favorite Key Club memory was when that pocky game was played at the DCM hosted by American Indian a few months ago. -The first day of school was hectic cause my schedule was all messed up, and I would check my classes more closely next year because I ended up going to a classroom that wasn't being used.

As the school year begins, Alameda High's Key Clubs spread our Kiwi knowledge, as we recruit new members during orientation for school. While bonding to meet new members we decided to spread outside of our comfort zone and meet new people by helping clean the community with our sister club. Afterwards we went to ShareTea where we contributed to our fundraiser. We will continue to keep growing our club and raising funds for PTP and MNT.

Club Reports

In the final weeks of summer, Albany key clubbers kept their volunteer spirit up and served the community in a series of events. From the DWS to local happenings, those who volunteered displayed kindness to their community even if drowning in summer homework! Good job on finishing the summer off strong!

This month, we had 6 service events: Laurel Street Fair, Outdoor Movie Night, 2 services at Oakland's Chinatown Street Festival, Montclair Mural Painting, and Montclair Outdoor Theater. At the Laurel Street Fair and Oakland's Chinatown Street Festival, we worked hard to help vendors to establish their stands, helped with running booths and clean up. At the Outdoor Movie Night at Montclair Outdoor Theater we put in our best effort to set up the place as well as cleaning up. As for Rebuilding Together Oakland, we went around and picked up trash around our neighborhood. Lastly, Montclair Mural Painting, we repainted a beautiful mural that needed restoration.

In the month of August, Arroyo hosted the August DCM: Color War Rendezvous. We also had six total events. Arroyo volunteered at Brazen Racing Summer Breeze and on the same day we had a joint event with Skyline at the Japanese Peace Lantern Ceremony. We were able to launch the lanterns made by the community. On the next Saturday, we helped out at a local event in San Lorenzo, Relay for Life. At another local event, San Leandro Creek Cleanup, volunteers gathered together up and tidied up Root Park. Additionally, a volunteer cleaned up Splash Pad Park in Oakland. Lastly, at the K to College Berkeley Volunteers Event, Key Clubbers packed school supplies and dental kits for students in Berkeley Public Schools.

17

This past month we had 5 service events. The usual ones were the Berkeley Marine Shoreline Cleanup and the Prisoner's Literature Project. We also had an event in the Oakland Hills where volunteers helped restore Huckleberry Park. Moreover, we continued our reading buddies project, which started in June, with Aspire Education. Lastly, we packaged school supplies with K to College.

18

During the month of August, Castro Valley Key Club focused on local community service projects! Along with the leadership class, we helped out during registration week with the registration process. Castro Valley had our first sister club event at Crab Cove with Oakland and Alameda! To end off our summer, we healed an I-Tea boba fundraiser!

For the month of August we focused on member recruitment. We had over 40 sign ups and we are currently getting ready for the school year. Some events we had were San Leandro and El Cerrito sister club event and the Kiwanis park clean up. In September, we plan on volunteering at at a Dragon Boat Festival at Lake Merritt, volunteering with the Richmond Art Center at the Solano Stroll, and also at Sycamore Church to help with their Bizarre.

August was a busy month for Encinal Key Club! This month we traveled around Alameda to help the coordinators of the upcoming Eat Real Festival put flyers and notifications. We also volunteered with the Asian American Donor Program and had a lot of fun at our Splash Pad Park Cleanup with our sister clubs. Finally our club participated at our DWS and DCM in addition to our regular events with Alameda Food Bank.

This past month, we only had one service which was Crab Cove with our sister clubs Alameda and Castro Valley. We helped mulch the area and plant new plants. It was really fun cooperating with our sister clubs and we hope to do it again soon.

20

This August, Oakland Tech Key Clubbers continued their dedicated volunteering, both in the last weeks of summer and the first weeks of the school year. On August 9th, many volunteers participated in our Lincoln Park cleanup, clearing away trash for 3 hours. From August 11-16th, volunteers came out to Oakland Tech's registration to recruit new members. Before the end of the month, volunteers were able to fit in another park cleanup, this one at Splash Pad Park alongside Skyline and Encinal, as well as a lunchtime boba sale at Oakland Tech.

For the month of August, Piedmont Key Club Five events. We did three joint events with Arroyo Key Club. Members from both schools attended Brazen Racing, work party at Splash Pad and Relay for Life. On the 14th, Piedmont did the August DWS and on the next day,the 15th, Piedmont also help out at our school's registration.

21

This month our club attended the August DCM: Color War Rendezvous. Our club also began distributing order forms for the spirit gear and our newly designed caps. Though we have not yet recruited any new members, the amount of people ordering shirts for the upcoming year is massive. We also are organizing a new fundraiser; so keep an eye out!

22

This month of August we sadly did not have any service events. However, we did attend the August DCM Color War. We also had a board meeting to prepare for our first club meeting and club rush.

August marked the end of summer and the start of school. For Skyline Key Club, that means it is time to start recruiting new members. We promoted Key Club during club registration and made posters and signs to promote Key Club even more during club rush. We had two other services this month which is the Japanese Peace Lantern Ceremony with Arroyo and a Splash Pad Cleanup with our sister club.

Meet your Spirit Coordinator,

JoeY Lu What is your favorite Key Club Memory? My favorite key club memory is FRN last year not only because we won the spirit stick but also because it was really cool seeing all the divisions get together and show off their spirit and not be shy about it.

How did you join Key Club? I joined Key Club because I saw someone was wearing this really cute shirt and they seemed so cool at the time.

What is one unique fact about yourself that people wouldn't know unless they're told. I can't handle spicy food like not even Siracha.

DNE’s Closing Message Hello Kiwis! Summer is officially over now that Autumn finally arrived. Hopefully, everyone has gotten accustomed to their new work schedule as work starts to pile up one after the other, but I know you all got this! Did you enjoy September’s DCM because it was certainly hype. Everyone was decked out in lime green spirit gear. There were some amazing spirit sticks out there as I saw a lot of effort poured into making it. Lei making was extremely fun and helpful as it was my first time making one. But the main highlight was learning the new spirit cheers as they were so fire. All the spirit leaders were hyped and ready to teach everyone. Apparently some people heard our cheers from two blocks away. I’m so excited for RTC! Are you? By the time you read this, RTC might be happening right now. If you’re going, I can’t wait to see you there, Animator of Service. If not, that’s okay as we can see each other at another Key Club event. The spirit video and cheers are released. Get ready to start memorizing as it is going to get spicy as our cheers are hot once again. Don’t forget to start preparing your tutus, capes, headbands, leis, and etc. Hopefully, you ordered the new spirit gear that was released a while back and if you didn’t, that’s okay. There should be another chance for those who were unable to purchase the gear to order. Start memorizing as time flies and FRN will be around the corner right after RTC is over! Once again, thank you so much for reading the newsletter. It makes me so happy to see all the likes and comments on Facebook. Please remember to take care of your health as Autumn has arrived and that your body was not ready for the dramatic weather change.
