“BEE” The Wave of Service
August 2013 Volume 1 | Issue 5 Lieutenant Governor Kathryn Teruya with CNH District Governor Victoria Lai
Hello Division 22 Hikina, Wow! Summer flew by, didn’t it? I hope you all are having a strong start into the new school year! I have no doubt that this school year will be one to remember. I hope those who went to Region Training Conference had a wonderful time. It’s hard to believe that is my last RTC; however, I am so glad that it was spent with such an amazing region! Please continue to encourage the officers and members in your club to attend RTC in the future. Remember… We will all meet up again in February on the island of Kaua’i for HCON! Let’s have a manō frenzy at the end of the year to celebrate all of your amazing service. At the August DCM there were many great ideas for fundraising as a division. If we are to go through with these ideas, I will need a team of volunteers to help lead these fundraisers in order to keep organized as well as provide leadership opportunities to as many people as possible! Although the time of officer, member, and region training has come to an end, please feel free to continue to train the officers and members in your club. If you have any questions, please always feel free to contact me.

Division Submissions Featured Project On July 21st of 2013, Roosevelt’s Key Club was attending the famous Ukulele Festival at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. However, they weren’t there just there for the beautiful music; they came to help out. Over 10 of our members showed up to volunteer their time and services to a food stand. The members were broken up into two teams, one for the shaved ice that was offered and the other for the plate lunches. For over nine hours, we managed to serve tons of burgers, shaved ice, fries, and such. Each of our members were able to make hundreds of customers smile as we provided them with great food and even greater service. BY: Marleen Tana
Roosevelt Key Clubbers helping out at the Ukulele Festival
This month, the `Iolani Key Club made not one, but two banners for different events. The first was a 20 foot long banner for the 2013 Region 18 Region Training Conference. With lots of construction paper and a long hallway, the `Iolani members worked to help make RTC as festive as possible. Sticking to the theme of Surfing in Service, the banner created a great backdrop for the weekend's festivities. At the end of the month, the club was asked to create another banner for a charity event. This banner would serve as the background for picture taking. This was very different for the club as six members took on the canvas banner to paint an island paradise backdrop. The hours of banner-making this month were well spent as everyone was happy and satisfied with the outcome with both pieces of art. BY: Kathryn Teruya

On August 17, 2013 the Saint Louis Key Club volunteered at the Mililani “End of Summer Carnival of Fun Event.” The Salvation Army hosted the event and it was open to the general public as a means of fundraising as well as a service for the general community. During the fair Saint Louis Key Club members assisted with the set-up, running, and breakdown of the various booths and games that were present for the enjoyment of the community. The entire service project was extremely rewarding, as the Key Club members were able to directly interact with the kids and engage them in the games and booths. This experience displayed the positive impact of our community service, as we were able to see the joy and excitement on the faces of all who came. As a whole the community project was a success and a large crowd of people were able to participate in the activities that day. The Saint Louis Key club members were able to make a difference in the Mililani community and the experience was both rewarding and enjoyable. BY: Dayne Okamura

Regional Training Conference Recap RTC was a blast. The many perks of being on the RTC Team was that we had an excellent room to ourselves, we were delivered pizza, and we managed to get free food all day. We were provided with a coffee maker as well as a soda maker to keep ourselves awake and we had the privilege of being right next to the bathrooms. RTC Team meetings lasted till 1:00 A.M., which was extremely tiring for me, but I got to hear the opinions of other people. When we broke out into our mini Key Clubs, I took on the role of an advisor. Being the advisor meant that I had to take on a leadership role and guide my team to victory. We did some team building exercises, such as the relays. The balloon popping game during the relay was a great idea and it was hilarious to see different members trying to sit on the balloons to pop them. Each team had to work together to strive to be the winners, which allowed them to really connect with their other members. Later on that night, the talent show really blew me away. It was great to see our members working together to entertain the audience and show off their skills. On the third day, we had the lunch auctioning. The auctioning was tough for those who were short on cash, but it was funny to see different groups battle it out over some food. All in all, RTC was amazing and I gained a lot of insight over the weekend. I met new people and I took on different responsibilities. I learned that it does take a lot to be the leader of so many and that many of our members have outstanding potential. Being at RTC that weekend made me realize how proud I am for being a Key Clubber. BY: Johnny Zhu This year’s RTC, “Surfing in Service”, was a great way to start off the new school year. Region 18 came together at ‘Iolani School to learn how to strengthen our clubs and help our communities better. We had a school supply drive as we arrived to send to the kids at Kapiolani Medical Center. We played Icebreakers and got to know each other along with the Lieutenant governors and their division teams. I went to the Kiwanis family workshop led by LTG Allana Carpio and learned about how great our Kiwanis are. In the second workshop I attended, we learned how to submit for awards and recognize our members in different ways. For the last workshop, I attended the one about Project Unify and it inspired us to team up with Project Unify for a Division banquet. To illustrate the different types of service we split into “clubs” and had service relays. When forming our clubs, there were only a certain number of people from each school allowed into each club, forcing us to make friends with people from other schools. We also auctioned off ten LTGs, members, and Kiwanis advisors to raise money for PTP. RTC was a great experience and it allowed key clubbers to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. As a club, Kaiser will definitely be bringing back a lot from RTC to improve and strengthen our club at home. BY: Sabrina Young

Don’t Stress | Let’s have an amazing year !
Division 22 Hikina shares their tips to relieve stress.
USE YOUR PHONE! I often take pictures of my notes and study them whenever I have some down time. It is a useful tactic because I don't have to carry my notebook around with me since I will ALWAYS have my phone with me. No matter what. EXERCISE! I find myself to do a lot better on tests if I work out the night before. I often look over my notes while I am doing cardio on a treadmill or stretching on a yoga mat. Doing some physical activity clears my mind and allows my brain to absorb the information needed to ace those tests. Deena Char, Roosevelt Key Club President! A stress reliever I have is to go shopping :) One study tip I have is to have a clean organized study area. That really helps me stay focused. Caroline Kodama, `Iolani Key Club Secretary !
TAKE A BREAK: I think it’s very important to take break. Personally, I like to listen to music to take my mind off school or whatever. It not only helps you relax, but also helps you focus when you get back to work. DON’T SPREAD YOURSELF TOO THIN: I know a lot of people try to stay “very active” or pile themselves with too much work. Some people can’t do everything and excessively stress out. That’s why you should just do what you can. LAUGH!!!: Just do it… It’s good for you! Ako Gagarin, Division News Editor Make a list of everything that you need to do. Nothing feels better than crossing something off the list, and when you are finished, you have a whole list of tasks that you have accomplished! Remember that organization is key. Ask for help! Never think that you are in it alone. When times are tough, due dates are drawing near, and you know that you are struggling, ask for help from teachers, friends, as well as advisors. Know that we, in Key Club, are here to support you 100%. We believe in you and your success! Kathryn Teruya, Lieutenant Governor
