Giving Thanks!

November 2013 Volume 1 | Issue 8

Hello Division 22 Hikina, I hope you have had a great start on your holiday season. During this time, it will be very easy to get lost in the presents and decorations. Spend time with your family and friends, but don't forget that you are always needed to help your community especially during the holiday season. Thankfulness. We talked about this topic at the last DCM. I encourage you to let those who you are thankful for know how grateful you are to have them in your life. Thankfulness isn't only for November or even thee ending of the year, just ask, "Kudos to the Key Players" shouldn't only be celebrated once a year during Key Club week. Thank you for a 100% attendance at the last DCM. It was great to see representation from each club. Please keep it up. You can always send me officer updates or club updates as well as questions by email or phone.

There are lots to be done as HCON approaches. If you have any questions, please let me know. Remember that forms are due early December. Please be on time. Be prepared for this yeR. I am excited to see all of your submissions for things such as distinguished officer and single service. The idea of this is to really share with everyone what you and or your club has been up to this year. It will be a reflection tool for you and a learning tool for judges. I am so proud of everything you all do and I hope you are all too.

On October 26, 2013, Saint Louis Key Club attended the HUGS event at Leahi Hospital. HUGS stood for Help Understanding Group Support. Our members ran a game booth, partook in various events, and created a skit for all the kids who were terminally ill. We entertained and helped the kids have as much fun as possible. The HUGS event was great and I was glad to help the kids at the hospital. Overall the Saint Louis Key club had a great time assisting at the HUGS event. BY: Nathan Lam

Kaiser Key Clubbers packed shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child

Saint Louis Key Clubber participating in the painting activity during the HUGS event On November 17, Kaiser Key Clubbers met in Mr. Iwanaga’s room, bearing gifts. To finish off the shoebox gifts we wrapped in September, the thirty members who came each brought a bag of things to fill the shoeboxes with. It was amazing to see how much everyone had brought. There were hundreds of pens and pencils, and stacks of crayons and markers to choose from. For the second time this year, we turned that room into Santa’s workshop. Each box had a card and was packed for a boy or girl ages 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. It was great to see our members fill the boxes and think of what that person would like. Through Operation Christmas Child, these boxes will be going to kids in a third-world country who have never received a gift before in their lives. The cool thing about the process that Operation Christmas Child goes through is that they don’t take anything out of the boxes, unless it’s war related, breakable, or chocolate. They leave the boxes as they are, even if the box may seem oddly packed, and the boxes tend to find the right children who need those things the most. BY: Sabrina Young

The ‘Iolani Gala was an event at ‘Iolani to celebrate the 150th anniversary of our school. The Key Club helped out with this event by preparing party favors for the guests. There were over 1,000 favors that we needed to make and ti took lots of after-school work sessions to get done. However, working together with the members of our club made it enjoyable. We learned that working was fun, as long as we are positive and working hard. When we were finished with the project, we were so proud of ourselves! The Gala went very smoothly and the hard work really paid off. BY: Caroline Kodama

Pearl Harbor

On December 7, 1941, a 22-year-old former debutante from Nashville was giving a flying lesson in the skies over Honolulu. In one terrifying moment, she and her student became witnesses to history when they were caught in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, landing amid machine-gun fire. Nationally known author Rob Simbeck joins us to tell this amazing woman's story, and that of the WAFS, the first women ever to fly for the U.S. military. Join us for a spirited discussion of this American hero and a chance to meet the author, who will be signing copies of his book, "Daughter of the Air."

Rob Simbeck Author Mr. Simbeck is a Nashville-based writer whose work has appeared in The Washington Post, Field & Stream, Guideposts, Country Weekly and many other publications. He has 18 books to his credit and he has written press bios for hundreds of entertainers, including Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Toby Keith and Hank Williams Jr.
