Deri’s Design Brief: Retail Interior

Design brief: For this design brief, I will be designing a retail store that includes different activities for buyers to engage with. I will be seeking inspiration from different stores in order to gain a good range of ideas. The area that I have selected is Social Media, I will create a skin brand retail store inspired by a skincare app I have used and is well known.

Requirements:  Space should be accessible to all users; able bodied to wheelchair users, visually impaired etc.  Create a range of interactive spaces  Make the space visually exciting  Include product displays for consumer purchase

Research:

Sketched elevation and 3d view of a pink concrete, curved clothing store structure, with inbuilt led lights and a panoramic window, which creates an angular visual portal, I sketched this to get an idea of retail spaces, however this one stood out to me because of its sleek style and the attractive light that are placed around the inside of the exterior wall.

Here I drew the interior of a museum and a retail space, with each wall closing into one another which I thought was a cool design and especially how it pulls me into finding out more about what is inside. I also added a wide front elevation view for the museum, so I can visually view what is behind the large pillars.

Researching Furniture: I uploaded work of furniture I’ve seen or took a liking to and sketched it out. I would say, furniture is used to bring out stores' interior, I’ve also noticed during my research that geometric shapes; modern themes seem popular in retail interiors.

Organic Form

Movement & Flow

Mood & style in ‘other spaces’: I created 3 Mood Boards to get the feel of styles made in other spaces and environments, I had fun putting together similar images and looking at the contrasting forms, color palettes and furniture that I could put in my own retail interior.

Environmental Impact Environmental Impact

Model 1

Description: My first model, I used blue cardboard to fold it into a geometric shape and used tiny pillar sticks to support it; the shape is different from different angles, but this won’t be my last design as I will use sketch up to develop this idea and turn it into a retail space people will enjoy and continuously go to.

When I made this model and sketched it out, my first thought was that it resembled Scandinavian modern homes. In Scandinavian home the keyword is ‘Minimalism’, in such simplicity you can find that the environment is completely livable. From what I have researched, Scandinavian homes have a simple design and are in tune with their natural surroundings. In my model I aimed for the building to be breathable and have access to natural lighting, which is great for customers wanting to take videos, pictures or promote it onto their social media and the process is then repeated by more customers, making the building more popular.

Model 2

birds eye view

I Improvised with this model and put together two of my belongings to create and idea in my head of two separate buildings. Because I chose ‘Social Media’, it is supposed to represent makeup products commonly used in the industry and turn them into buildings to attract people of all ages, looking for an attraction and a place to have fun and experiment with make up products, maybe for the first time? Which they can post about.

For example, this building was made to be like the shape of a burger, the yellow streaks are the cheese and the walls with the glass windows are the buns, all stacked to look like a burger. Like this building I want my model to represent the shape of 2 makeup products, it won’t entirely be like the sketches I drew, but if I were to design a building, I would use it as reference, like this building. Example of a similar building resembling the shape of a lip stick

Model 3

This Model first started out as an Octagrammer, then into an 8-fold star, I was experimenting with folding different shapes, and this is by far my favorite, great for the structure of a roof top or a dome.

*SketchUp will be uploaded here and on more slides, I will add at least 10+ slides representing my final design* (Size of text may be weird, because I’ve re-sorted it for issuu)
