There have been many significant days throughout the course of American history, but the greatest events ever that not only changed the course of America, but the course of the entire world were the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was on those days that life and death faced each other in mortal combat and life won. God’s love won out and it is still His love that wins today. Many people today seem to want to turn away from the horror of the cross. They want to take encouragement from the fact that Christ died for us but skip the messy details. We must never lose sight of the true meaning of the crucifixion because it reminds us that the grace that we stand in today didn’t come cheap. Jesus Christ paid a huge price for our salvation. This was to be His memorial – a cross to remind us that God’s love for us is a love that hate cannot nullify and death cannot kill. Christianity has a cross at the very heart of it and if you leave out the cross, Christianity dwindles to a weak and empty cult. The extraordinary power of the cross is that no matter where we’ve been or how far we’ve wondered, we can stand in God’s presence just as we are because the cross serves as the bridge between a broken people and a Holy God. The method of the world is a sword, but the method of Christ
was a cross. The world seeks revenge but Jesus Christ seeks reconciliation for all mankind. The world cries give us a sword and we will rule and reign, but Jesus cried, give me a cross, “if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto me.” The real blessing of the cross came on that third day, the resurrection morning. Mary came to the sepulcher prepared to weep, but instead was able to rejoice. Why? Because Jesus was not there. He had risen! As the song goes, “up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph o’er His foes. He arose a victor from the dark domain and He lives forever with His saints to reign. He arose! He Arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!" The old stone that seem to seal Christ’s fate, had been rolled away on that third day by the power of God. It wasn’t rolled away to permit Christ to come out of the grave but rather to enable the world to see that Jesus Christ was not there. He had risen! When Jesus rose from the grave an entirely new perspective was put on the crucifixion. It changed message of the cross from the bad news of a malicious murder to the good news of a mighty deliverer. The resurrection was moved from the realm of philosophical speculation into the realm of historical fact and He, who was undisputedly dead, is now undeniably alive. This is the most important event in human history, and may we never forget it.
