rural Live-work SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN JULIAN, CALIFORNIA
The inspiration of this project was primarily sourced from Italian Hillside towns. Such dense settlements produce varied and dynamic exterior spaces in part through their irregular circulation. An important design emphasis of the project was in providing numerous and varied exterior spaces to facilitate social interaction. The use of natural and reclaimed materials used as sliding panels assist in crafting an architectural quality suited to its context.

ECOLOGICAL PLAN IMPERIAL BEACH, CALIFORNIA With the looming threat of sea level rise, Imperial Beach is a city framed by three fronts; ocean, bay, and estuary. This project is an inquiry of the potential for a city to redefine its spatial identity through a renegotiation and embrace of its dynamic natural surroundings. The focus was to generate an urban-ecological dialog that affords an opportunity for mutual re-enforcement and enhancement, both for the residents of the city and critical ecologies. design extraction PROCESS The focus of this studio was to extract form through additive and referential processes. The initial phase was to devise parameters that would guide the generation of a graphic field. Each successive layer referenced former layers. This process of additive layering assisted in examining gestures, trajectories, void, and volume. The final phase was the production of a three dimensional form/model which was generated through a sectional abstraction of the cumulative layers.

A base layer was generated through a simple set of devised parameters and hand-drafted in ink to generated a linear field. Each successive layer focused upon a specific condition (void, trajectory, and volume). These sequential layers, each with their own graphic language, produced an additive and complex composition.

ase study
The objective of this exercise was to adapt Bernad Tschumi’s Toronto Downsview Park competition submission into a graphic rerepresentation of the original proposal. Tschumi’s focus upon dual programmed, adaptable and flexible environments were graphically emphasized to reveal dual programmatic potentials of natural and human confluences. These emergent overlaps represent unique opportunities to sustain new ecologies and flexible public event spaces that could
