EDITORIAL In this worldly life, as one’s intellect increases, so does one’s inner turmoil. This intellect is the culprit, which ignites an inferno in the most unexpected moments leading to overt conflicts and tension. The highly revered Gnani Purush, Dadashri, has shown the easy way to be free from all inner turmoil and external conflicts. This is the path of internal apology and repentance. If you have any problems with anybody, then bow down internally to that person and ask for forgiveness, by saying, ‘I have made a mistake, I am very repentant and am asking for forgiveness’. Then the inner turmoil will go away. Otherwise, by seeing the faults of others, inner turmoil will increase. All conflicts dissolve if you see your own faults and see the other person as faultless. The intellect will not harass you if you get rid of it. You too can be free from all turmoil like the Gnani Purush, as you stop using the intellect. Thereafter one remains in the bliss of the Self (samadhi) even as the worldly interactions continue. What is the role of the intellect? It shows that injustice has been done to you. This creates inner turmoil. This turmoil leads to fights and battles in the courts of the world, which destroys the present life's peace. Even at the end of it all, you will not have justice. One of Dadashri’s cardinal aphorisms is: ‘The one who does not seek any justice is indeed liberated.’ He says, ‘I have never sought justice in my life.’ The intellect disappears as you stop looking for justice. The nature of the worldly intellect is such that it teases small matters with such persistence that it ruins the owner and makes him miserable and this in turn makes everybody else miserable. In contrast, simple and straightforward people excel when they do not tease matters and simply say, ‘he had a fever and died,’ with reference to discussing someone who passed away. So it is better to progressively stop listening to the intellect. The intellect will not interfere as one follows the Agnas (cardinal instructions) of the Gnani Purush. Gnan (Self-knowledge) clears the confusion created by the interference of intellect. Upon an incident of spillage of milk, the old intellect will say, ‘what a loss, you should have taken care,’ whereas today’s new Gnan will say, ‘whatever has happened is correct. There is no need to create interference.’ So the chapter of intellect finishes and everything gets cleared. There is nothing wrong in eating vegetables, but saying, ‘this vegetable is not cooked properly,’ is an interference of intellect. And afterwards he realizes that he has made an error by the criticism. Thus the intellect will express its interfering nature for sure and place the owner in a suffering situation. As one becomes free from the interfering intellect, one becomes spontaneous and free (sahaj). The intellect will not sit quiet. Everywhere, it will agitate, afflict, confuse and mislead you. It will not let you remain calm. You are blessed if the intellect stops its riots permanently. The riot of the intellect will continue as long as it exists. So after receiving this Gnan, one has to be aware that it is the intellect that is causing the riot. This is the excess ‘overwiseness’ of the intellect. Make this type of intellect your enemy and tell it to stop giving you any advice. Otherwise this very intellect will isolate you from the Gnani at the end. There is no other power that can separate you from the Gnani. This is because the Gnani Purush is one’s own Self. In the following compilation of satsang with Dadashri, the solutions to problems caused by intellect in worldly interactions as well as on the path to liberation (moksha) are presented and they will prove to be a blessing for the spiritual aspirant. - Deepak Desai Subscription :Yearly Subscription - India: 100 Rupees, USA: 10 Dollars, UK: 7 Pounds 15 Years Subscription - India: 800 Rupees, USA: 100 Dollars, UK: 75 Pounds Printer/Press : Mahavideh Foundation, Basement, Parshvanath Chambers, Usmanpura, Ahmedabad-380014

Against The Rioting Intellect... (Please note that great care has been used to convey the exact message of Dadashri. Here ‘Y’ or ‘S’ refers to the awakened Self or the Self. For glossary of the terms, please refer to : www.dadashri.org/ glossary.html and www.ultimatespirituality.org )
Freedom from tension Questioner: I continually feel tension within the mind. Dadashri: The mind will become agitated with tension. Sooner or later you will have to become free from tension. Questioner: I do realize that it is wrong to have continued tension on the mind. I also know that my health will suffer due to this. Despite this awareness, the tension continues.
and perpetuate stress and tension, cease. The problem is with the inner link of egoistic anger, which we continue harboring within. Let go of this link. Even when I am not guilty at all, if someone says, ‘you are at fault,’ and I will immediately apologize. Leave me alone from here, my friend! Besides, nowadays the definition of fault has changed. Questioner: The other day you stated that even when loss occurs, one should settle the matter in this manner.
Dadashri: If something wrong happens in your interaction with your father, then it will not do any good to keep it in your mind. If you bow down to his feet right away (apologize), the tension will subside. If you experience tension due to conflict with the Muslim horsecarriage rider on the way home, or anyone else who interacts with you during the day; bowing down to him and apologizing will take away the tension. What is the need to carry any tension home with you?
Dadashri: Yes, you should settle it promptly in this manner. If you do not, then it will spoil your mind. So from now onwards, you will be able to improve matters, will you not?
Questioner: I do that in my mind, Dada.
Questioner: Nowadays I see a lot of faults of others. It seems to be increasing. Before, I did not see any faults.
Dadashri: Not just in your mind only, but you should openly state, ‘I salute you brother!’ and see the tension leave promptly. This is for you to ensure your safe side on the path to liberation. You are not saluting him to boost his ego. His ego will be taken care of by his wife when he reaches home. Tension will increase if we bring it home, unsettled. We should not bring any tension at home from outside. Wherever tension is created, deal with it by saying, ‘I have made a mistake, I am asking for forgiveness.’ This way tension will be released. If we do not deal with it thus, then the tension will come home with us. Through direct words of apology, the thoughts that create 2
Questioner: Yes, for sure Dada. Dadashri: It is done then, well and good for you. Tension increases by seeing faults of others
Dadashri: Tension will increase by seeing faults of others. From the moment you start seeing faults of others, tension begins. This is because our Gnan (knowledge of the Self, gained in Akram Vignan) says that the entire world is flawless. To see it faulty increases tension. Don't you accept this understanding through the enlightened view? Do you accept this, with Gnan? Questioner: I accept it, yet it still happens. Dadashri: But we have to warn him May 2006

(the worldly self, Chandulal). The other person has to be seen as faultless. When you see the other as guilty, then you have to say that, ‘I do see you guilty but in fact I am the guilty one. I am asking for your forgiveness.’ Only then will the intellect cool down. Are you doing this? Questioner: I do not do that. Dadashri: Stay in tension then. Questioner: No, I want to get rid of it,
Questioner: But why is it that the intellect does not subside? Dadashri: It will not subside easily. This is because we have nurtured it and made it grow big. So it will not leave easily. It will only leave when it gets into our grip. Does it come into our grip? We have to keep looking for how to get it into our grip. The intellect leads to suffering
Dada. Dadashri: Then, when will you get rid of it? When you become old? What is the use when you cannot make good use of your faculties of youth, with its strength and power? This is the time when you should get rid of your tension and get your work done. I am nobody, Sir We make a reservation in the first class and yet we grumble with others! Hey, why do you get up and grumble? Go to sleep quietly. This is your reservation. Your whole night will be spoiled. If the other person starts grumbling, then you should say, ‘Sir, you are an honorable gentleman, and this here is out of my reach. It just has happened that I am in the first class compartment, that's all. You are a big man. Take it easy and have a good night’s rest.’ This way you should finish and go to sleep. Why do you need to grumble with him the entire night? Intellect is the traitor Questioner: Dada, I feel that the interference is created by the intellect. Dadashri: The intellect is doing this, but that is the nature of the intellect. Now we have this Gnan, and therefore, we do understand that nobody is at fault at all. Everything that appears to be wrong is the fault of the intellect. It is the culprit that shows the faults of others, and that is what makes us miserable. Our own intellect makes us miserable after eating our own food! The intellect eats our food, stays in our home May 2006
and then bothers us only.
Tension can destroy a human being and in the absence of this Gnan, tension exists everywhere. The entire world is suffering, isn't it? Even this judge is stressed and suffering. But he stops the suffering after getting inside the court. How does he stop it? He stops it with his pride. He suppresses it, thinking, ‘people will notice.’ In a way, he has the power to throw someone out of court, but he himself has come from home miserable! Nobody can stay without conflicts, be he a magistrate or a chief executive. Whoever he may be, conflicts happen at home, don't they? Questioner: They do happen Dada, conflicts continue. Dadashri: Is everybody not linked with the toilet? Whoever he may be, of whatever repute, can he escape being friendly with the toilet? On reflecting upon this, I understood! Affliction is everywhere. He is distressed even with his wife. Do you understand? So remain aware. I am telling you this, because your intellect is working more. You have to be careful. That tension can destroy a human being. You have acquired this wonderful knowledge (Gnan), but even that can disappear. Then, you will not have any opportunity like this again. Even when the other person is at fault, you should ask for his forgiveness. Questioner: Such ego continues to remain that I find it hard to ask for forgiveness with ease. It used to be such that previously whenever I made a mistake, I asked for 3
DADAVANI
forgiveness promptly and was done with it. Dadashri: So then you should reset it again. The One who does not use the intellect is a Gnani These businessmen use the intellect. Mooah (The one who is dying spiritually, this word used by Dadashri to alert a person) nobody will give a quarter for this intellect! People are dying in agony pain due to this intellect. There is no need of the intellect. How nice is the empire of these little kids who are free from the interference of the intellect. The Gnani Purush is like a child. He is devoid of intellect. This intellect has caused so much suffering. After receiving this Gnan, if one does not use the intellect, then he can remain like the Gnani in eternal bliss. Uninterrupted bliss with five Agnas Samadhi (the bliss of the Self, being the Self, Oneness with the pure Self) One man is running his home life for the past seven years. He is a farmer, making a living off the land. He is Brahmin, keeps cows and buffalos. Recently he got his daughter married. So he had invited all mahatmas (the ones who have been enlightened by the Gnan of Dadashri). He says to me, ‘Dada, with this Dada’s Gnan, I have not experienced even a single moment of disturbance (asamadhi) or loss of bliss, in the past seven years. Bliss (samadhi) has prevailed during bad times of famine and good times of prosperity. I asked him, ‘What is the reason for this?’ Then he replied, ‘Dada has given me five Agnas. With these, I do not create any disturbance anywhere at all. I follow the five Agnas.’ ‘Dada has given me five Agnas. I do not understand anything else.’ Such is the beauty of this wonderful science! And all this interference is of the intellect. It is the cause of all distress. 4
After receiving this Gnan, gives divorce to intellect How long do we need the intellect? Until we attain Gnan. After obtaining this Gnan, we do not need the intellect. The intellect always intrudes by its very nature. The intellect does not let the one who is dying (mooah), live. (In the vision of the Gnani, the entire world is dying if not aware of the Self). Little kids’ lives go on smoothly. They do not fall down the stairs, and the poor father will say, ‘They will fall, They will fall, They will fall.’ Mooah! Nobody has ever fallen ! In Mumbai city, no kid has ever fallen, whereas the father who worries has fallen so often. He is a fool. After receiving this Gnan, whoever depends on this interfering intellect, is foolish. Once we were going on a pilgrimage to Matheran. We were sitting on the platform at Dadar station (suburb of Bombay). At 6:30 AM, all the lights went out. I asked everybody, why the lights were turned off. They said, ‘Dada, this is because daylight has come.’ Then I said, ‘The light of the soul has come (Gnan), so now shut-off the lamp (intellect).’ Not even a fool person will keep it on. All this interference is due to that lamp (the light of the intellect- indirect light). We do not need those lamps. We should turn them off. I am abuddha (without intellect). It is due to the intellect that everyone's faces appear as if they have swallowed castor oil. There is no need for intellect anymore. We should tell the intellect, ‘stay away. You have helped me for many days. Now please retire and enjoy your pension. Your pension will continue.’ Still there is the authority of the intellect. Where such a tremendous light of knowledge has expressed (which enlightens the entire world), where is the necessity of the limited light of the lamp of the intellect? So it is necessary to become abuddha. May 2006
DADAVANI
Why am I saying that I now rest after becoming abuddha? There is no telling when these people who exercise their intellect will lose their sense. It is better to hand over the intellect to Dada (The Lord within). Do not hand it over temporarily as a pawn. Hand it over permanently. The one who does not seek justice is liberated The whole world is looking for justice. Now, it is better, if he accepts the decisions of the lower courts. But he will say, ‘Though justice is done in the first court, I am not satisfied.’ Then he will go to the higher court. He will go to district court, even there he will say, ‘No, I am not satisfied.’ Then he will go one step higher to the high court, not having any satisfaction there also he will go to the Supreme Court and from there he will go to the President. Even there nothing will happen, and then he will say that the whole justice department is useless. He thinks that he is the best judge and none can surpass him. This is the nature of worldly life. The one, who does not seek any kind of justice, becomes free. I have never looked for justice in my life. One makes it ‘sticky’ and suffers (Sticky is the term that stem from the word ‘stick’, which refers to properties of glue that attaches. This refers to repeated interference and teasing of the intellect which delves on an event or issue which has happened and results in further ‘stickiness’ or attachment and thus creating further source of tension) Questioner: The chitt (the inner organ of knowledge and perception) will remain in a merry state if Gnan has 'fit' exactly. Dadashri: Yes. Otherwise some simple hearted, ‘straight-forward’ people do have a merry state of the chit also. They are very casual and carefree. They will not make it sticky with the intellect (get stuck at one point, May 2006
keep teasing and ruminating over the faults of others). These people who get stuck at one point and make it sticky are very miserable. Questioner: Those people who make it sticky (delving unnecessarily on matters and events) are always miserable. Dadashri: Yes, unhappy all the time. Such a person has brought his nature of permanent unhappiness from the past life. So do not make it sticky. When asked ‘How did your father die?’ reply that, ‘he had fever and died.’ This is the short and simple response of the one who does not make it sticky. A response like this will not prompt them to bother you. If you say, ‘I took him to that doctor,’ they will argue, ‘Why him? Why didn’t you call that other doctor?’ Thus people will come and drive you crazy with unnecessary discussion. It is better to say, ‘He had fever and died.’ They will not pester you anymore. Dim the light of intellect in this manner Questioner: The one with a well developed intellect does get involved in this matter of stickiness, regardless of whether he desires it or not, because of his ability to discern (see) it minutely, does he not? Dadashri: He will suffer that much. Therefore the one with such developed intellect will turn around after experiencing this suffering. He will learn to stop using the intellect again in such instances. He will not switch on the light of the intellect there. Questioner: But, how can that intellect be used in the right manner? Dadashri: There is no need to press the switch (the light of intellect), unnecessarily. Questioner: Then it is like keeping a machine in an idle state. Dadashri: Do not keep it unoccupied, let the light be there, but dim it. If we cover the lamp bulb with either a red or a black piece of cloth, then there is no problem. The bulb of a 5
DADAVANI
hundred watts cannot be diminished, but its light can be muffled with a piece of colored cloth just so that it emanates light of fifteen watts. This prevents us seeing the snake (negativity) that enters within and creates tension. Otherwise for the others they do not rest until they see the snake leave. Break the old habits with Agnas Questioner: After attaining this Gnan, the intellect arises and interferes. Now where there is Gnan the intellect should not arise and where intellect exists Gnan will not remain, so why is this happening? Dadashri: These current happenings are the result of your old habits of misuse of the intellect. That is why I have given you these Agnas. If you follow the Agnas, then the intellect will not be used. But you have the old habit that is not going away, and due to that habit it appears to you this way. It will take some years for this habit to go. Once the intellect leaves then this discharge ego will also leave promptly. Questioner: As long as the discharge ego (dying belief of ‘I am Chandulal’) exists, the varying phases and facets of intellect will continue to express. Dadashri: The intellect will stay, but when that discharge ego reaches a certain stage, at that time we can say that the intellect is as good as gone. As long as the ego is at the higher stage, the intellect will start to decrease, and then it will settle, afterwards you will not feel that, ‘I have intellect.’ Questioner: So as we follow the Agnas more and more, as…. Dadashri: The intellect will not interfere. Questioner: It will not interfere? Dadashri: It will not create any interference. Let go of the intellect. Become Shuddhatma (Pure Soul): ‘I am Shuddhatma.’ 6
As the intellect stops, worldly interactions will dissolve The intellect will subside in proportion to the amount of silence you hold on to. Silence will follow the termination of intellect. Today, it is the intellect that makes you speak relentlessly. The intellect and the ego join together and make you speak relentlessly. When it (the nonSelf) becomes silent, it will all turn around. Liberation (moksha) begins when the doors of the intellect close. Worldly interactions exist due to the intellect. Those who do not have intellect, their worldly interaction (sansarlife after life account) is dissolving. The animals and birds do not have intellect, but they do have ego. They do not have intellect, so their worldly interaction keeps discharging constantly. Likewise, the beings in hell, as well as those in the celestial realm (heaven) are simply discharging (not charging) their worldly interactions. Look at these intellectual people (!) (with their interfering intellect) Such fortunate people ! The intellect creates restlessness Questioner: The intellect keeps interfering, that this will happen, that will happen. All these interferences of the intellect continue all day long. Dadashri: Yes, what is going to happen? We should say to the intellect, ‘this factory is running by itself, not losing business, all brothers are alive, so what is going to happen?’ We should say, ‘Nothing is going to happen.’ Questioner: That is correct, Dada, but even then the intellect continues to intrude and create its own realm. It exaggerates that which is insignificant. Dadashri: Yes, it will, then what should we do with it? Should we make friendship with the intellect? Questioner: We should get rid of it. Dadashri: Yes, we should get rid of it. May 2006
DADAVANI
Such a strong and young fellow like you! What will happen when you become weak with age? ‘What will happen? What will happen?’ The world is as it is. What is going to happen? We are alive. This steamer started from England and came here safely. On the way if it swayed three times, do we have to think that, ‘what will happen?’ Eat, drink and pray to God. In the name of Jesus Christ! Does a ship not sway with the waves in the ocean? Now at that time, if you say, ‘What will happen? What will happen? What will happen?’ Who teaches that? It is the intellect that is interfering. The intellect is harassing you. What is going to happen? One of two things may happen; either it is going to sink or it is going to float. So be calm and pray to God. Can a third thing happen? And sinking would happen very rarely. Extinguish the lamp of intellect My intellect is not functioning. When the intellect is in function, the mind begins grumbling annoyingly. We should tell the intellect, ‘why are you grumbling? Besides you are the mother-in-law of the mother-in-law. How long should we keep this unpleasant relationship?’ Questioner: But we cannot do without intellect, right ? Dadashri: It's like this; if we only have the light of intellect, then it is necessary. When this light is not there then one needs the light of Gnan. Do we need light or not? Intellect is like a lamp. I have given you Gnan (knowledge of Self), so in this light then, you do not need the light of intellect. If you do not have this Gnan then you need the intellect. Who will keep both the lights? At this time, if this bright light is on, then will you not turn off the other candlelight? And if you do not extinguish it then what will someone say? Can’t you see the bright light all over? Can you extinguish this? There is benefit in being abuddha (without intellect). Both lights are not to be kept. Only in the absence of this light of Gnan, will the May 2006
light of the intellect be of use. The intellect comes happily when you say, ‘welcome’ and likewise by saying, ‘get lost, you witch,’ it will leave, with a sour face. We do not have any objection, if it (intellect) leaves with aversion. The intellect grumbles : ‘not enough’ If somebody serves us half a cup of tea, due to some inconvenience that arose in the morning. Even though the cup is half full of tea, the intellect will interfere and grumble, ‘What am I going to do with this half cup of tea? What is there to drink in it?’ This and that, finding faults with what is at hand. When it interferes thus, we should say, ‘Hey witch, let me have this much tea. You don't let me have even this much tea in peace.’ How rude! It will not let you drink even that much tea. ‘I got this half cup with lots of trouble. At least let me drink it so that half my mind will be refreshed!’ What will the intellect do? It will not let you drink peacefully. It was with some difficulty that I got this half cup of tea. How nice would it be if the intellect lets us drink it in peace! At least it is half full! But the witch (intellect) will not let us drink even the half. ‘Only half a cup?’ is the spell of the ill omen cast even before the cup comes to the lip! At least half a cup will refresh half the mind, will it not? Better half than nothing at all. Questioner: Is that the mind, that takes over the grumbling afterwards? The intellect shows, that it is only half a cup and then is it the mind which carries on? Dadashri: Later, the mind takes over. Once the intellect rises and rolls, the mind is affected and starts rolling and grumbling. It also will not let you have half a cup peacefully. Oh mooah (again, the classic Dada awakening term for the one who is destined to die), such a nice cup of tea! Milk and sugar are separate, tea is separate, oh mooah!, such good tea! An 7
DADAVANI
expensive brand. If half then half a cup it is. At least it will soothe half the brain, will it not? The intellect will destabilize our mind! One will not drink and in addition spoil everything. From the beginning it will cast a bad spell, ‘Hummmm.., only half a cup?!!!’ ‘Get lost you stupid witch,’ should be our response to the opening ill omen. This sort of thing happened with you earlier, didn't it ? Questioner: It happened just like this. Dadashri: It will not be so for me. If I get half a cup, I will say fine, let us have it. It will do. It is Vyavasthit (scientific circumstantial evidence). I will get half a cup for sure. That much will help part of my brain. Otherwise the other approach will unsettle the mind and spoil everything. What is wrong if we say something when it starts nagging? We should say, ‘hey witch; you cast an ill omen even before I touch the tea?’ There is no problem if we call the intellect, a witch. It has no power to make a counter claim. It will notice the insult and remain subservient. In the past we used to respect and welcome it and that has given rise to all this tension within. The harm of excess intellect Questioner: If we do not stay completely within Gnan and Pragna (the direct light of the Self), then are we working in social dealings with intellect only? Dadashri: It is just enough to say that you are using intellect in social dealings. Otherwise, the intellect takes care of social affairs by itself. I am telling you, I do not have intellect (Abuddha). I am saying that, I have deficiency of the intellect. Even then intellect keeps working in the social dealings. This vegetable is cooked and this is not cooked, thus it keeps working! Questioner: Should we use the intellect just enough as needed? Dadashri: No, the intellect is used by itself. This excess intellect is the one which 8
says, ‘you need me’. That is the excess intellect, and that the intellect is harmful. Only this excess intellect is contradictory or harmful. To separate ego from intellect is purusharth ! (Real effort) Say for example, your own brother is in the hospital; to get there you are traveling by train. After you get in the train, thoughts like ‘when will the train reach?’ are interference of the intellect. And in the train if someone offers, ‘please, have some tea’, you may say, 'yes I'll have some to show courtesy but soon you will be lost in thoughts and will not even enjoy the tea. Hey, now you are on the train! Is it going to fly to take you there? What kind of crazy people are you? Can you sit at ease or not?’ But these people will go back and forth in the train. Questioner: You had said that the intellect is not showing anything new. The intellect is helping the ego in making the final authoritative decision. Is this jumping around of the ego or the intellect? Dadashri: The intellect gets the signature of approval from the ego. After taking approval from the ego, all the work is accomplished. Now, when some work is not going to happen, the ego gets separated from the intellect. The ego objects, saying, ‘here it will not work as you (intellect) direct.’ Questioner: Will you please explain some more about that? You had said, ‘to separate the intellect and ego is the only purusharth (spiritual endeavor) in worldly life.’ Dadashri: Yes, it is purusharth in relative dealings to separate the intellect and the ego. In relative dealings when the intellect and ego get mixed, purusharth has not happened at all. The intellect and ego should remain separate in relative dealings. Then it is relative purusharth. We have no use of such purusharth in the Akram path. Now, what should one do after getting May 2006
DADAVANI
on the train? Tell me. The brother is very sick and is asking us to go soon so what should one do in the train? To avoid the harassment of the intellect, isn't some kind of an arrangement needed? Questioner: Intellectual people do not become restless in the train. Dadashri: You do not see that. I can see everything that happens inside the so called intellectual people. They simply keep up appearances to hide the tremendous tension within. Stupid people are better than them. They will have tea or smoke a cigarette. Even then the train reaches for both ! The intellect creates riots everywhere Questioner: My circumstances were very favorable, and I have met the absolute enlightened Self. This experience has destroyed all my doubts. Therefore there is no inclination that pulls me in worldly matters and conflicts. Dadashri: The intellect creates all these riots. All the work is done well for the one whose intellect stays orderly. The intellect will not sit calmly. It will not let you sleep at night. If you are told, ‘Here is the Lord in living form,’ it will nag you all night. Hey, why are you tormenting me? Can't you let me sleep in peace? It does not nag you, so your intellect is good. Otherwise the intellect argues a lot like a lawyer. The intellect does unlimited arguments and pleadings. Questioner: I accept heartily nine of your ten teachings and messages. It seems to me that having understood nine, the tenth will come to me automatically. So I am not coming to you for clarification of the tenth message and talk. Dadashri: If you have understood nine, then keep the tenth pending. When the time will come, you will understand. But you do not need to use your intellect in trying to understand it by your self. May 2006
Now this state of the Gnani is the world’s most glorious state. If one recognizes this, then one will achieve liberation! If only one recognizes it, isn't it ? I shout that the last station has arrived. But what did he understand? I can make him experience it, but even after the experience, the intellect will not let him rest. Secondly, there is the problem of charitramoha (that which deludes in discharging karma effects). It will not let him sit quietly! Look at this! How have all these people (mahatmas) settled down quietly here! When the intellect does not make you restless, know that you are blessed. So the intellect did not harass you at all. Had the intellect harassed before you came here? Questioner: Yes, a lot. Dadashri: Yes, you inquired a lot before you came here and due to that you lost valuable time. The interfering intellect can create much havoc. It will not let you sit quietly. Questioner: The intellect interferes, but when I follow your instructions and leave it near my shoes at the door, then the work is done well. Dadashri: It is wise. Prior to meeting me you did not have the power to deal with its interfering nature. Now you can let it (intellect) sit outside, you can say, ‘sit outside, I will be back.’ Now we have become Purush, the Self. Questioner: And when we keep the intellect outside, then it takes care of the shoes very well. Dadashri: It will take good care. The intellect will not take over, otherwise it will take over. Show disagreement with the intellect ! The one who has no worldly desires is a Gnani Purush. Such a one is not the owner of the body, not the owner of the mind, and not the owner of the speech. Before such a Gnani 9
DADAVANI
Purush where is the need for any interference of intellect. If he tells us to go to sleep, we should go to sleep in peace. He (the Gnani) says what is beneficial does he not?
Questioner: But I can't stay in that state of seeing only and I slip.
Questioner: In this era, the intellect is the culprit which causes all the harassment, isn't it?
Questioner: It feels that way, but I cannot become like you.
Dadashri: Yes. The intellect creates interference. But now, we should recognize the true nature of intellect, and say, ‘Dear Madam! Would you kindly leave and go to your husband’s home? How long can you stay with your parents after marriage? I will send you a thousand Rupees a year.’ She has to be given a farewell ceremony. Then she will leave, will she not? Thereafter you will not need to call her again. We have raised her up, and we continue to feed her, So it is no surprise to find her taking advantage of you, and not listening to you. She will continue to interfere and nag you. This interference will continue as long as she remains in your home. Questioner: The interference spoils it all for sure. Dadashri: What is wrong with that? You are simply to see it all. See the one who went to interfere. What should we do if a Muslim gentleman who eats meat enters the kitchen where a group of strict vegetarian Brahmins are having their meal? Should we just watch what happens or should we also enter it (intellectual interference)? We should just see what happens. Observe the hot interactions that follow from both sides. Puzzles of excess intellect Questioner: I understand Dada, what you are trying to convey, yet afterwards the intellect continues to interfere leading to riots. Dadashri: So then, when the intellect interferes and the riot happens, then watch the riot, and we are to know that the intellect is the culprit. 10
Dadashri: It may seem so, that you have slipped. It is not so.
Dadashri: The intellect will interfere of course. But we should know the nature of the intellect that this interference has been caused by her. Can we not see this much? A woman comes to your home along with a little boy and a little girl. Would you not know that the woman represents interference in your home? In the same manner simply know the nature of interference. Nothing else. Would you not know who represents the interference? Questioner: I do know, but later on. Dadashri: No. This will happen, and you will know it later. The key thing is to know the interference as the interference, and thereafter nothing matters. Questioner: The intellect creates puzzles, what is that? Dadashri: The puzzles are due to ‘overwiseness’ (excessive interference of intellect). By ‘overwiseness’ I mean that one uses his own intellect and (limited) wisdom to do the entire tasks. He uses his wisdom in all matters. He follows the directions of the Gnani, yet he also uses his own intellect. The prescription calls for the medicine to be taken at 3:00 PM, and he will say, ‘what’s wrong with taking it at 3:15?’So, thus, he always lays his own intellect. Such a person will be faced with a lot of puzzles. From this day on, create vengeance with the intellect. Due to the interruptions confusion occurs And the intellect will interfere. So how does the intellect interfere? At one person’s home, fifteen to twenty people were invited for May 2006

dinner. The menu for shrikhand needed yogurt. He called a bahiya (chef) to make yogurt. The chef came and warmed up a few gallons of milk, and after it cooled, around 8:00 PM he added this much starter yogurt in it, stirred it and instructed the host to keep it aside. Then he asked the chef, ‘what do I have to do now?’ ‘Nothing’, replied the chef, ‘simply go to bed’. The man asked, ‘how come nothing further needs to be done? How will the yogurt form?’ The chef said, ‘Please go to bed, and sleep soundly. When you wake up in the morning the yogurt will be done in fine form.’ But the man has the interfering intellect. So he woke up at 1:00 o’ clock at night. He was thinking in his mind that how is it going to happen just like that? I need to check, right? I need to check it out, right? He woke up at 1:00 o’clock and dipped his finger in the mixture. Dipped his finger! The yogurt got spoiled. The chef had said to check it in the morning! So this intellect is the one which interfered. So therefore for tonight tell the intellect, ‘hey intellect, come to lunch at noon tomorrow, not before then.’ If you will converse with the intellect, it will listen to you promptly. This is because it stays with you constantly. How many days is it going to stay with you and keep fighting? Conversation with the misleading intellect You have to listen and assimilate everything here. Here hundreds of thousands of solutions are available. This is the place, in the satsang of the Gnani, where you have to listen and then make the adjustments. In this, when the intellect shows something negative within, you have to tell it, ‘relax madam, I have not come here in this world to learn more worldly interactions and entanglements. I am now on the path of moksha. So do not advise me anymore.’ The intellect will interfere. When our May 2006
own intellect shows us the wrong path, it is our own fault, is it not? The Gnani is just one step ahead of you Let me tell you, I am leading you on the path that I myself have walked on. In this path I am ahead of you by just one step. You are simply following me. I have not moved any further ahead on the path. I have given you everything, whatever I had. Some gurus are secretive. Who are the ones who will keep something hidden from their disciples? Those who want to become gurus. Such gurus do not share all the keys with their disciples. I have no desire to be a guru. My only desire is to have you become like me. Why should I open a business of being a guru? Is it not a business? Questioner: Dada, you have expressed your deep intent here that we are very close behind you. Is it really true that we are that much close behind you? Dadashri: Yes, you may stray a bit from me, because of your own feverish nature, but in time when you overcome your fever of inner negativities then you will be with me for sure. This is the elevator path. If you become argumentative with me, then you will spoil your spiritual progress. There is nothing within me that has the potential to harm you. That can only happen if you initiate an adverse course by yourself. Yes, if there is some attribute within me that initiates negativity within you then it is understandable. But you yourself should not commence any negativity within. The intellect distances one from the Gnani If your karmas make you obstinate and interfere then you are to understand this and tell your self, ‘My brother, can you not stay without being stubborn even at this place (the vicinity of the Gnani)? Therefore, when karma is such that it misleads you from within, you should say, ‘behave here, or else I will dismiss 11

you.’ The intellect will interfere, but Akram Vignan will protect you until the final moment of liberation. I protect even the one who has left here cursing me. He is cursing me not because of his karmic account, but because of my karmic account. He is possessed by karmic ghosts within. He is settling my account. What is our duty? If somebody had an accident, would you not go and help him? Questioner: Yes, I will do my best to save and help him. Dadashri: Yes. How can we help him stop bleeding? How can we get him the best help quickly? This should be our duty. However, what will the intellect do? The intellect will commence swachhand (to act according to one’s own decisions and intellect and not according to the instructions given by others). Even when he is in front of the enlightened Lord Mahavira, he will say, ‘the Lord will say so, but I am going to do it this way.’ That is the swachhand of the intellect. One of our mahatmas (those who have acquired Gnan of the Self) had whipped the intellect mercilessly. When the intellect showed anything negative of the Gnani, he whipped it until it surrendered completely. He told her, ‘what the hell do you think of yourself? How dare you make a fool out of me? I understand it all. Why are you making your arguments here and contradicting the one who is here to liberate me? It is intellect that makes you have arguments and clash with your wife or children, but even at this (in front of the Gnani) place? The same had happened in front of Lord Mahavira (previous life). Intellect will not let you rest in peace. The intellect makes one wander life after life Questioner: Having surrendered at the feet of Dada moksha is experienced, isn't it? Dadashri: Some mahatma’s intellect will repeatedly trap him in the web of deception 12
and then he will become depressed. The intellect is deceiving him. The others here are free from the deception of the intellect. Once the intellect deceives, there is no solution. When there is no solution, no meaningful task gets done. When intellect deceives you no work gets done. Neither the worldly task nor any spiritual work gets done. Therefore I have shown you the way. Keep doing pratikramans, and tell the Lord within, ‘Alas! In what a state had I done such karmas?’ Questioner: When I was doing the business of the intellect (using intellect), not even a single word of yours took hold within with spiritual results. And when I left the intellect outside near the shoes (tradition of removing shoes outside before entering the chamber of the Gnani or the Lord), whatever you speak, sinks inside directly, bringing meaningful results. How come? Dadashri: It is verily the intellect that is creating all the havoc and interference. The intellect makes one buddhoo (slang for stupid). Then he walks around like a buddhoo. Even the worldly people will say this one is buddhoo. All the hassle is from the intellect. I do not have any intellect, and that is why I have succeeded. Your intellect too will leave gradually. My intellect has ceased, so the work is done. The Gnani is my Soul Questioner: I do not have any question, yet why am I so attracted to Dada and want to come to him? Dadashri: Questioning represents interference of the intellect. The intellect cannot relax, that is why it questions. Otherwise it is better if you do not have any questions. What is the reason that you like to come here even when you have no questions? It is because Dada is your own manifest soul. That is why you like to remain sitting near Him. That is why Shrimad Rajchandra had said, ‘the May 2006

Gnani Purush is the Lord in human form.’ I however will always maintain that, ‘I am an instrument only.’ But you have to see it the other way. As the questioning ceases the body will become spontaneous and natural (sahaj). The sahaj state is devoid of intellect and ego Questioner: What is the meaning of the natural state of the Self (sahaj atma swaroop)? Dadashri: If this body becomes spontaneous and natural (sahaj) then the Soul is already in its natural state. When all this relative portion becomes sahaj, then the other portion, the Soul does not need to become sahaj as it is already sahaj. There is no problem with the Self. We have to make this body revert to its natural state. Spontaneous! The intellect is the culprit that interferes. Questioner: We are instructed to maximize the time with the Gnani. So when we stay around the Gnani, then we can observe all the natural spontaneity of the Gnani, right? Dadashri: Yes. The whole day you can observe his spontaneity. How natural! How pure and spontaneous! How pure are the intents of the egoless state. You get to see the state devoid of intellect. These two are very rare; one never gets to see the state devoid of the ego and the intellect. Wherever you look you will see people with intellect. Their words are filled with ego and arrogance. When they talk, they talk with puffed up noses (arrogance). Their nose would be puffed up with arrogance. Nothing is natural in them. Puffed up noses, lifted high up in the air! Even when you try to take their picture their noses are high in the air with ego. And if a photographer happens to see me, he will take a picture even if he didn’t want to. He will say, ‘Here is a man who is natural and spontaneous and without any air of egoism.’ A photograph of the stiff puffed nose is never natural. May 2006
The sahaj neither favors nor rejects It is all right to eat and enjoy whatever food comes before you, with ease; be it maalpuda, (a rare sweet delicacy) or doodhpaak (rice pudding with milk). And if you have received simple rotla (thick Indian chapati) and vegetables, then enjoy that also. Do not reject the maalpuda and doodhpaad and do not revere the rotla. Do not favor one and insult the other. Questioner: I can understand from this example how one can become natural. Dadashri: No insult to one and no respect to another is the sahaj state. That which comes with ease is called sahaj. Then it is all right even if one eats jalebi (sweet and flavored golden rings fried to crispness). Yet he will say, ‘it is fried.’ Leave it alone, man. Fried food hurts the one whose intellect has interfered to the point of perversion. It does not hurt the one who is sahaj and eats whatever comes on the plate. Eat what comes to you. Suffer the pain and the pleasure that comes to you as it arises. To the Gnani, there is no pain or pleasure. It just arises in front. And this other person, if it is uninvited, will he keep it if it tastes bitter? Questioner: No. He will throw it out if it is bitter. Dadashri: Let the mouth become bitter if it does so. We are not to interfere in that. That is the mark of the sahaj. This whole spiritual path is of the sahaj. That is why Krupaludev (Shrimad Rajchandra) says, ‘the path of salvation is straight, natural, and easy; but it is very, very rare.’ This is because the meeting with a Gnani Purush is extremely rare event. He has stressed this a hundred times over! Questioner: The only thing left is to come close to you and become sahaj. Dadashri: Indeed, simply sahaj. Only sahaj! Having observed my sahaj nature, once 13
DADAVANI
a resolution is made, the person becomes sahaj. Questioner: Yet you maintain that as long as the intellect remains, one will not be able to become sahaj, isn't it? Dadashri: This intellect verily, makes you wander in this world and the worldly existence remains due to the intellect. As long as the intellect remains, one cannot become natural (spontaneous). As the intellect decreases, the spontaneous ness increases. Two categories of sahaj states My sahaj state is like that of a little child. It is so with the presence of Gnan. It is not through the intellect. Expression through intellect makes one emotional and it creates differences of ‘mine and yours.’ The expression through Gnan does not create any differences and never makes one emotional. Questioner: Animals have a spontaneous nature and the Gnanis also have spontaneous nature, so what is the difference between the two? Dadashri: All three, animals, children and the Gnani have spontaneous nature. Wherever intellect prevails there is no sahajspontaneous nature. Limited intellect is associated with spontaneous nature. Children have limited intellect, animals have limited intellect and in the Gnani, the intellect has subsided completely. So the Gnani is downright spontaneous. A child is also spontaneous. That is why I say that the Gnani is like a child. Questioner: But what is the difference between a Gnani and a child? Dadashri: The child is with ignorance and Gnani is with knowledge of the Self. That one is in darkness and this one is with light. A human being cannot remain natural with the light of intellect. Therefore when intellect leaves, he can remain in the spontaneous state. Otherwise one cannot remain without becoming 14
emotional. The intellect will make one emotional for sure. The dull one will not be affected and will not become emotional. You may criticize a dull person repeatedly and he will not be affected. Why? It is because he does not receive the criticism. The intellect is not there to receive and respond. He simply cannot get the message in his head!! And the ones with intellect will receive the message even before you speak! It reaches him even as you are thinking! Possession by the ghost of etiquette make one be unnatural So we will need this heartily. Heartily means the intellect is not used. And if intellect is used then the ghost of etiquette (the need to conform to worldly standards and opinions) arises to create more madness amidst the riots that are already happening. As it is, enough madness is going on, why invite one more ghost? Have you seen etiquette? Questioner: Previously, we used to live with etiquette only Dada. Dadashri: Is that right? Do you like this etiquette now? Questioner: It becomes burdensome now. Isn't it? Dadashri: It feels like ghosts, ghosts! Many people got rid of those etiquettes after meeting me. I tell them, ‘why are you possessed with these ghosts? Is it not a ghost if it tells you, ‘if I sit here in this cramped place in front of Dada, my clothes will wrinkle up?’ My dear, there are so many wrinkles within that need clearing up! Why not let go of the ones outside? Have you seen all those ghosts of etiquette? Is there any puzzle for this Dada who looks like a kind, simple villager? Does he not appear pure to you? Why mess with the ghost of etiquette? It will leave only when wrong understanding leaves. Is it possible for wrong understanding to leave? May 2006

The Gnani gets rid of past life negativities
there is no more unfortunate being than him.
To the intelligent people, their intellect will show, ‘What is there here for these people to clap their hands for Dada?’ It will show such negativity. Highly reputed and educated people in Mumbai ask me, ‘what is the reason for all this excessive show of appreciation for you?’ I told them, ‘in their prior lives they had harbored much negativity for the Gnani and in this life they are clearing all those negativities.’ Can you take these negativities with you to moksha?
Dadashri: Even then, it will deceive. The intellect will deceive even a very spiritually careful person. That is why you should recognize the intellect in advance. What am I telling you is that whenever the intellect comes to you to give you advice, tell her, ‘go to your parent’s home. Now I do not need you. I get into problems listening to your advice.’ Listening to the advice of the intellect only will lead us to problems.
Questioner: No, no. Dadashri: They are doing it to remove their past life's negativities and irritations. If you do it yourself, it will leave. Yes, otherwise, as a Gnani why should I take up the business of getting rid of it for you? I am a Gnani Purush and such junk is not right in Gnan, no? All this garbage needs to be emptied. This is Akram Vignan (Dadashri’s step less path to liberation). In the Kramik path (step-by-step traditional path to the Self) it is different. There, you have to keep it with you and keep suffering. Here you have to get rid of it by emptying (let it express as is) it and bring it to an end. What is left after becoming a pure Soul (Self realization, Shuddhatma)? Questioner: How can we stop the intellect and keep it away from repeated interferences? Dadashri: Have you taken Gnan? Questioner: No. Dadashri: You will not be able to understand it right now. This understanding is valuable for the one who has received Gnan. Until then, intellect is the base and runs everything. After Self-realization, there is no dependence on the intellect. Identify the advice of the intellect Questioner: After even coming under your shelter, if the intellect deceives one, then May 2006
Questioner: Dada is right in advising us to send madam intellect to her parents’ home, but just by saying that she does not leave. Dadashri: She may not leave. But if we say this once, then she (intellect) will understand that I have become unpleasant to the owner. She will understand that I am not being loved any more. It is like the one who you want to divorce. If you do not say to her at least once, ‘I am going to leave you,’ then what will she understand? Similarly, you have to tell her (intellect), ‘I am going to remain separate from you.’ Then she will be in doubt and remain subservient. And if she comes to tell you something, she will be intimidated and think that, ‘will he scold me? What will he do?’ When intellect creates a whirlpool within, it confuses you. Therefore, you have to tell her from the beginning, ‘do not give me any advice at all. I do not want your advice. Your advice helped me for many days in the worldly life. Your advice helped me when you were needed, at the time of the marriage of my son and daughter. Now I want to go to moksha. I do not need your advice now.’ Intellect has helped until now in worldly life. When we did not have Dada’s Gnan, did we not live our life? Yes, it helped us in our worldly life. But now the intellect will not let you go to moksha. Its role and limit is to keep you in the worldly life. She will take you to the top, but she will not let you leave worldly life. 15

The remedy to get rid of the intellect ! Questioner: How can we abandon the intellect? Dadashri: You do not have to abandon the intellect. The intellect is not something that you can abandon. You have to have the deep inner intent to get rid of the intellect. Keeping such deep inner intent (bhaav), day by day it will start to decrease and if you keep having the intent that it is necessary then the intellect will keep increasing. Questioner: Therefore, should our intention be to become abuddha (without intellect), till the end? Dadashri: Yes, it is necessary to become just that. Only that intent is in our hand. The effect is not in our hand. The action of doership exists in ignorance. After this Gnan (Self-realization), there is no doership and therefore, only the intent remains. The intellect is not a file Questioner: (with Mahatma): Is it true, that the intellect is a file? Dadashri: No. Questioner: Are we not to include the intellect as one of the files? Dadashri: If you want to consider it as a file, do so. If you do not want to consider, then it is not necessary to call it a file. What does a file have to do with the intellect? If you do not want to listen to the intellect, then who is going to make you listen to it? Suppose I have decided at home that, I do not want to listen to whatever this person says. Don't you decide something like that? Questioner: So is it not a matter to settle with equanimity? Dadashri: ‘I am not going to listen’, means I have decided in my mind that let him speak, and I will not listen. I do not want her advice. You have to settle a file with equanimity. 16
But it is not a file. This is more like it is showing you, ‘the way to Taj Mahal.’ After reading this, you may go to Taj Mahal if you want to. You will be ensaved !! This is not one of my Agnas. This is unnecessary pain. You do not have to do anything outside the Agnas. Whenever the intellect interferes, then we have to tell her off, ‘this is not part of the Agnas so please leave.’ Questioner: This ‘Chandubhai’ (relative self) is a file. So then, is it not a part of a file? Is intellect a page of the file or not? Dadashri: No. Intellect is not a file. We have to settle the file with Chandubhai and Chandubhai has to take care of this. Chandubhai should not listen to the intellect. Chandubhai has to listen to all except the talk of the intellect. Questioner: Therefore, we are to explain to Chandubhai not to listen to the intellect? Dadashri: Yes, right, talk to Chandubhai! Interruption of niddidhyasan by intellect Questioner: I cannot get niddidhyasan (inner visualization, contemplation of the Gnani) of Dada or anybody else. The snapshot, photo is not taken, the image does not form, what is the reason for that? Dadashri: The problem is the intellect. That interference is done by the intellect. Questioner: Then what should I do? Dadashri: Nothing. Intellect is interfering. We are to know that this interference is due to the intellect and it appears this way due to this intellect. Some people say that, ‘Dada, I cannot see the exact face during niddidhyasan.’ I reply, ‘the intellect is interfering.’ However, we (the awakened Self) have to see it exact, as it is. Questioner: How does the intellect interfere? May 2006
DADAVANI
Dadashri: It drags us out of our niddidhyasan, into worldly things. Questioner: Or, the intellect keeps saying, ‘niddidhyasan is not happening.’ Dadashri: Yes, right. ‘It is not coming’, it will also say that the intellect will make all these arguments to hold you onto worldly life and prevent you from going towards Moksha (liberation). The intellect will make these arguments to keep you in bondage. Questioner: It will make us do that which we have no desire to do. Dadashri: Yes. It will make you do all that. These are all its arguments to keep you in worldly life. It will never let you move towards liberation. And for others, once niddidhyasan has set in, it does not leave even for a second. Questioner: Once it has set in, it does not go away. But I am talking about the lack of niddidhyasan in the first place. Dadashri: That niddidhyasan occurs when difficulties come. During bodily sufferings the Chitt stays where the pain is, and at that time with niddidhyasan, peace prevails. At such time niddidhyasan sets well. There are people who, when they travel by the train, have the niddidhaysan of Dada as they close their eyes. With such presence there is no stress from anywhere. There is no trouble if Dada stays before you all the time, isn't it? You were saying, I want to pursue Dada only. So then for you it is good to have direct face-to-face niddidhyasan. Questioner: With reference to this niddidhyasan, are we to visualize the entire image precisely, or are we to visualize the gross imprint? Dadashri: Niddidhyasan requires that any kind of mental image may appear. The intellect will not allow precise niddidhyasan. Questioner: Will there be a shadow? May 2006
Dadashri: Yes, there will be a shadow shape. But the intellect will not let it see exactly. When intellect is present, it will erase the exactness of the niddidhyasan. Questioner: Then, what should I do with that? Dadashri: There is no problem. It is enough to get the shadow at least. Questioner: Do we need to have an image during niddidhyasan? Dadashri: Then only can you get His (Dada's) direct energies. Thus you can attain his energies directly. Say this to the intellect... We should tell the intellect, ‘stay out for today. Let me finish this much work.’ The intellect will interfere in this. The anesthesia that doctors give before a surgical operation is to prevent the interference of the intellect. If intellect were to interfere, then the whole case would be ruined. Likewise, I operate (Gnan Vidhi) after making a person unaware (surrender intellect) by stopping the intellectual interference. And we have to bring him (the relative self) to awareness. So we have to tell the intellect, ‘for the rest of the day, stay outside until 9:30 PM’. Then, when you go home, the intellect will meet with you. Then you can feed her (intellect). So can you not tell the intellect to stay out just for the day? Give it a holiday for the day. The subtle role of intellect in Gnan Questioner: You have given the two Agnas by which we have to see from the relative viewpoint and the real viewpoint. So a cow by the relative viewpoint is a cow and by the real viewpoint is Shuddhatma (Pure Soul). Please describe this vision in exactness. Dadashri: I have given you this knowledge of the Self. Did I give you the 17
DADAVANI
exact vision (drashti) or is it only a belief? Questioner: You gave us the belief. Dadashri: The wrong belief that existed became the right belief; that is all. There is no interference of the intellect in this. The understanding that, by the real viewpoint, one is Shuddhatma, is possible through the intellect. Only when understood through the intellect, the vision takes hold. Then, what is the nature of this vision, the ‘seeing’? Can we ‘see’ (the Pure Self) through these eyes? Questioner: You mentioned that you can see Shuddhatma in each and every living being. Dadashri: My state is different, and your state is different. That cannot be expressed. You have to find out why you cannot understand this with the intellect? Questioner: I can understand that. Dadashri: All intellectual people accept that this is possible to understand, then what is the problem? Through the intellect the ‘vision’ should exist, then the right belief and faith will take hold. If you tell someone to do good work for others in order to bind merit karmas (Punya) is he able to see that? Questioner: No. Dadashri: Everybody accepts that which is shown by the intellect. Why are you getting confused about this? Questioner: No, I am asking this so we can find out more details about this viewpoint.
convinced but this is convincing, is it not? If we ask somebody to do good work and tell him, ‘for this work you will bind karma of merit (punyai), he is able to understand this, night? Can he not understand with the intellect?’ Questioner: Yes, he can understand. Dadashri: And if casually one simply says, ‘Brother, God resides in everybody,’ the intellect will not accept it. The intellect has to accept it first. When the intellect is not ready to accept, if I say, ‘God is in everybody, see God in everybody,’ it has no meaning. Such approach is meaningless. Such slick talk does not lead to this vision. There is nothing wrong in this statement however. It is better than not to say anything. And in fact God is in all living beings. It is not wrong to say that, however, until the intellect accepts, the desired result will not come. Conviction attained through Gnan and grace The highest satsang (the company of the Self), it is to keep observing Dada (The Gnani Purush). If some kind of problem arises within, and you cannot understand, then you may ask if it is necessary to ask. Otherwise, it is all an intellectual exercise and dreaminess. The intellect expresses itself to show off. Questioner: Dada, that which comes in the darshan (vision, right belief); is it a property of pragna (the direct light of Self) or is it of the intellect (knowledge through the medium of ego, the indirect light of Self)?
Dadashri: Fine then. Let us proceed. Then with these eyes, the five sensed formed complex (putaloo, live idol) is seen. With the intellect even more can be seen.
Dadashri: It is that which illuminates pragna. Darshan means the conviction (pratiti) that I am the Self and the pragna. This conviction has to become established for further attainment of the full state of the Self.
Questioner: Correct. And with Gnan the total vision is there to see.
Questioner: Who is established with this conviction, is it the pragna?
Dadashri: That aspect is very easily understood. The other person may not be
Dadashri: No, it is not done by pragna. This Gnan is needed. The sustenance is done

by Gnan and by the grace of Dada Bhagwan (The Lord within). I give Gnan and by the grace of Dada Bhagwan you experience that in fact this is what reality is all about. The old thoughts and beliefs existent until today are cut, are they not? So if you say this much, then it will all be very good. The intellect of young ones can be turned around whereas these elderly people have a lot of veils (of intellectual interferences). All these youths will get ready very quickly (for maximum benefit of this knowledge). Questioner: Can the veils of the elderly people be removed? Dadashri: They will go away eventually, but they (elderly people) cannot take benefit of this Gnan like these young ones. Questioner: Then what should we do? Dadashri: What will you do? Your intellect will certainly turn around. This intellect, that has now separated (after Gnan) will keep interfering. It is simply not needed in this path of liberation anymore. The intellect creates interference all day long. This Gnan of ours has brought forth the full direct light of knowledge and therefore intellect is unnecessary. Yet, the intellect keeps on interfering. With the grace of the Gnani one becomes free from the bondage of intellect Questioner: Let us assume that my desire is to proceed towards the Self by my own efforts. In this, I need to distance myself from the intellect so that I can see the real. Is there a way to do this? Dadashri: It is not possible to distance oneself from the intellect. The one who is asking to remove the intellect that is the one, who is the friend of the intellect. Who is saying this? The best friend of intellect is saying this. The best friend of intellect is saying that, I want to get rid of the intellect. Besides, this May 2006
intellect will not move from that best friend, so nothing can happen in this. Questioner: So should we not utilize the intellect at all? Dadashri: If you do not use intellect, it is the best. But one cannot stay without using the intellect. The light is on. The brightness of the light automatically leads you there. The use of the intellect is like that. The intellect is light; it throws light on the non-Self (par-prakashak). I am without intellect (enlightened Self) and hence there is no utilization of the intellect. Questioner: How can I be rid of the intellect? In these sixty years of life, I have collected this intellect from all directions and now you say, ‘get rid of the intellect’. How am I to do this? Dadashri: You do not have to remove it. I will do it for you. The One who is devoid of intellect, can remove it. The intellect will not shut off, even if you want it to. It can only be shut off by the grace of the Gnani. Lots of grace is needed to become abuddha (free from intellect). A thief does not like the daylight. Daylight bores him. He awaits the arrival of the moonlight to go out and do his job. Likewise, the intellect likes darkness (lack of awakened awareness of the Self) and it keeps interfering. It makes a person emotional. Otherwise, the necessary amount of intellect exists naturally by itself. Solution to be rid of the intellect Questioner: Dada, please get rid of the intellect of all these people. Dadashri: Get rid of it? If you want to do it, it can be done. Whoever wants to do it, can do it. On one side, he says, ‘I do not want to plant the millet’ and on the other he says, ‘I love ponk (rare grill roasted millet)’, so he cannot stay without planting, right? He loves the ponk! Can you all understand this thing a little bit? This is a very deep matter. 19

Questioner: Everybody has Gnan. Gnan does not need to be taken. The intellect needs to be removed. Dadashri: It is like this. If we have Gnan then we should remove the intellect. Once the intellect is removed then the work is done. Questioner: When will be the end of this intellect? When will it rest in peace? Dadashri: Whether the intellect ends or not, is immaterial. If we do not water it, it will dry up. When we do not listen to the intellect, it will dry up. If we listen to intellect in certain things, then it gets nourishment (power). And if she is not nourished at all, then how long will she survive? Questioner: Even if we do not listen to the intellect, she remains inside, does she not? Instead, should we not seek reconciliation with her? Dadashri: No. If we seek equitable solutions for her, then we have embraced her again. Do not seek to come to an equitable solution with her. Do not seek conciliation with her (intellect). Intellect harasses and if you tell her that I want to keep you, she will stay. You should tell her, ‘you have been very helpful to me in my entire life. The whole life you have helped me. I cannot forget and I am indebted to you for what you have done. But now, please leave, so that I may be free and you will also be free.’ This much we have to say. We must say this with respect for her. She has done a favor, hasn't she? Otherwise she will claim, ‘you deceived me. Until now, I worked so hard for you.’ So we have to say, ‘you have been very helpful, but kindly leave now.’ Go, she must. Why are we removing this intellect now? Because the ego has been established at its original place (the Self). We gave birth to this intellect; we are 20
the one who raised her. And now we are the ones, who tell her, ‘Now you are not needed; now your work has been completed; now all your duties have been accomplished. I thank you for all your favors. Until now you have settled everything, and maintained everything very well.’ She's maintained very well, right? So tell her, ‘you have maintained all, so I thank you. Now there is no need for you to maintain anything.’ Now the abuddha state will take over the maintenance. Questioner: When one does not listen to the intellect, then indifference arises, right? Or will the intellect revolt? Dadashri: To follow or not to follow whatever the intellect says, in both the situations, the presence of indifference is the state of being free from attachment or abhorrence. Questioner: Please do a vidhi (silent auspicious blessings performed by the Gnani for the salvation of the disciple) for me to end the role of intellect. Dadashri: Yes, but that intellect is slowly coming to its end. If your decisions waver then the intellect will take over its rule within. If you remain firm and alert, then how dare the intellect arise and scream? The mind (mun) and intellect (buddhi) are mere assistants. When ego and intellect fade away, Gnan shines Questioner: So does Gnan become manifest in proportion in intellect? Dadashri: After attaining this Gnan, the intellect will keep on decreasing. This science is such that, it will make the intellect go down. This is because abhorrence (dwesh) leaves first. This vittadwesh (void of abhorrence) state is always associated with further decline in the interference of intellect. This leads to further spiritual progress in the awakened (Gnan) state. Questioner: It has been said, ‘Give a May 2006

send off to the intellect.’ What is meant by that? Dadashri: Because of this intellect, the ego persists. Because of the ego, worldly life exists. When the intellect and ego cease then the path of liberation, the light of knowledge will manifest. Absolute knowledge of the Self!! You have attained Gnan (knowledge of the Self), but it is the limited knowledge of the Self (who am I?) only. And then as the intellect subsides, its utilization decreases, this knowledge will increase leading up to Absolute enlightenment (Keval Gnan). As the ego decreases (the residual layers of ego after Self realization), the absolute knowledge will express. I do not need to use intellect. I am abuddha (without intellect). Questioner: Now, we are still in the layers of the intellect, right? When we reach the end point of intellect, is it only then that absolute enlightenment happen? Dadashri: No the intellect will melt gradually by itself, as the ego keeps decreasing. Currently, are you convinced that, ‘I am not doing any of this, I am not the doer?’ Questioner: Yes, that has begun to establish in my understanding. Dadashri: That understanding decreases the ego. As the ego decreases day by day, the intellect decreases. Solution will come on its own. You do not have to do anything. The five sentences (Dadashri’s five Agnas), which I have given, will bring forth all solutions. Bliss overflows after the demise of intellect Dadashri: Who becomes one with the worldly self (tanmayakar- to become the mind and the body) here? Raise your hands. Seven or eight only! (In a hall filled with mahatmas). Tell me brother (addressing the one who has raised the hand), what do you experience at that time? Questioner: I do not become one with May 2006
the body and the mind (tanmayakar), but I do seem to become the shape and form of the worldly self (tadakar). Dadashri: Seemingly becomes the worldly self! To indeed become the worldly self is another matter all together! That is to be engrossed as the worldly self (tan-maya-akar, to become the body and the mind; to become the illusion, the maya). When one becomes engrossed, then it is like being under the entire waterfall. Now (after Gnan) it only seems so (tadakar). Now some amount of intellect has gone. As the intellect vanishes there will be ever increasing bliss. This that I have given you is verily the abode of bliss. I have given you moksha. That intellect, which used to help you in your worldly life, is the one that is now interfering. Questioner: This happiness is not reactionary. Here, are we experiencing a superior happiness? Dadashri: Superior means, it is the ultimate bliss of the original Self. I had given you bliss only (at the time of the Gnan Vidhi)! But the intellect, which was making you big in the relative worldly life, and making you lead towards worldly prestige is no longer existent. So much bliss has expressed! This amazing level of samadhi (state of being unaffected in times of physical, mental or externally induced suffering) is being experienced! Amidst this if the intellect misbehaves, then we should tell her, ‘Oh Buddhi, I will drop you off on the island of Andaman.’ The grave danger of doubting the Gnani You have been told not to utilize the intellect. I am abuddha. The intellect is not to be used at all. Nothing new remains to discover regarding the five Agnas. I have exposed all facets of that for you. Nothing else is left for you to know. Even then, the intellect will arise, but you do not need to worry. The 21

one who has nothing to do will find something to do with his intellect. All these are scientific methods. That is why Lord (Mahavira) had said that, all actions (karmas) of the Gnani Purush, bheda vignani Purush (The One who has known; and is able to separate the Self from non-Self) are divine. Do not let the intellect interfere in this matter. Questioner: Very true. Never see this through the intellect. Dadashri: The Lord says, ‘The Gnani’s karmas are divine.’ What will happen if you try to use your intellect here? Questioner: The Gnan will vanish. Dadashri: The Gnan will vanish, but in addition he will be struck with the error of seeing the fault of the Gnani (which will prevent him from any further help from the Gnani in future lives). You must not see anything wrong in this regard. How can you ever see the fault of the One who has liberated you? Never harbor a single doubt in matters of the Gnani, even if it comes to losing your life. Does your intellect behave in this regard? Questioner: It behaves. Dadashri: Does your intellect see any faults of the Gnani? Questioner: Never.
Everywhere it is treacherous. Dadashri: Treacherous. It is better to slip in worldly matters as it will spoil only one life, whereas, seeing the fault of the Gnani will make you slip for infinite lives. I am the body: I am the Self Questioner: To be absorbed in the Self is Atma-ramanata. Please tell us more about this state. Dadashri: What would you call dehadhyas (I am the body)? Questioner: Bodily things (relative parts) which we see, is called dehadhyas. Dadashri: What will you ‘see’, in the body? Questioner: These external things, which we see. Dadashri: All that you can see with the eyes. Whatever you can see with these eyes is not called darshan (vision, right belief). Questioner: How can one attain the state of being the Self and remaining absorbed in the Self ( Atma-swaroop)? Dadashri: Has dehadhyas left? Has the intellect, ‘I am the body’ left? This is the intellect that enforces the feeling, ‘I am this body’. Do you understand this concept?
Dadashri: Yes. Make this clear to the intellect.
Questioner: This body is separate and the Soul is separate.
Questioner: Absolutely. This is very critical.
Dadashri: No, but your intellect that enforces, ‘I am this body, I am this mind, I am this speech’, has it left?
Dadashri: Otherwise, one would not know what intellect should see or not see? Would it have any discrimination at all? Questioner: Not at all. Dadashri: There is great danger there. Questioner: Yes, it is dangerous. 22
Questioner: Yes. Dadashri: So as long as that intellect was maintaining, ‘I am the body’, there was par-ramanata (delving into the non-Self). Now (after Gnan) that absorption is gone and therefore swa-ramanata (I am the Self) has May 2006

taken hold. Having been established as the Self, you are asking a question about the Self which is equivalent to a person eating a potato and then asking what a potato is? Then, is that a question or an unnecessary discussion? Questioner: It is languor of speech, and playing with words. Dadashri: No, now he is not speaking having understood the concepts. When he speaks after having understood, then it is playing with words for intellectual gratification. But he is asking out of true curiosity and desire to know, then it is all right. When one is not absorbed in the Self, he is absorbed in the relative world, the body state. And when he is absorbed as the body then he cannot be here as the Self. It can only be in one place at a time. Either here or there! Dada (The Gnani Purush) remains within you, (isn't it)? Questioner: Always. Dadashri: That Dada is verily your manifest Soul and only that Dada resides within. What you see, are mere empty boxes, all packages! Those who believe the packages to be real, and that intellect which sees it as real is the reason for the continued worldly existence. Questioner: Therefore it means that the intellect is only concerned with, ‘I am this body’, isn't it? Dadashri: Intellect has connection with, ‘I am this body’ only. There is no other connection. It says, ‘I am this body, I am Chandulal.’ It does not have any assertion about the Self. When it asserts that ‘I am the Self’, then one has come home and that is moksha. When it asserts, ‘I am the body’, then worldly life continues. Therefore when the intellect comes over to the Self, all work is done. May 2006
Surrender the intellect Questioner: The intellect does not interfere as much now. The intellect used to get excited and interfere, but now she has become obedient. I tell the intellect, do not stay far like a stream, come home to the ocean. Dadashri: Yes, surrender it. Let go of it. Questioner: Then, does the intellect become obedient again? Dadashri: No, it is such that, even though certain part of it becomes surrendered, some of it will arise and bother you. So you have to have the deep inner intent (bhaav) of surrender. You have to tell her, ‘you have done a lot for me, so now I have to compensate you. Whatever you need, just ask for it. Sooner or later we will have to separate.’ Thus I became abuddha. How did I become abuddha? This is the way for you to become abuddha. There is no final liberation without becoming abuddha. Questioner: I have left the intellect on one side. Dadashri: If you leave intellect on the side, this world will run very well for you. To become Vitarag… When can we say that Gnan has manifest in all its glory? When vitaragata (the state of total detachment, absence of attachment and abhorrence) manifests. When does vitaragata manifest? When one develops a negative attitude towards the intellect. All these connecting links of spiritual knowledge have to arise within, (isn't it)? Our Gnan is such that if one becomes aware of the role of intellect, the intellect will gradually melt away. Alas! Our mahatmas still use the candle light of intellect when they have within them the full light of the glorious sun! My dear, use this sun light of our Gnan which illuminates the Self as well as all that is the non-Self. Jai Sat Chit Anand 23
