SOCIOLOGY

The Sociological Perspective with Teylor

Socialization & the Life Course

Socialization & the Life Course

Socialization is the process of learning to participate in group life through the acquisition of culture. So basically that’s just a fancy way of saying, that knowing how to socialize and interact with other people is socialization. It’s something that we all do, all the time, even the introverts.

Socialization is a lifelong process, from the cradle to the grave. Unlike other species, humans need social experience to learn their culture and to survive. Have you ever noticed that you don’t have to teach your newborn puppy to act like a dog, to interact with other dogs; but you have to teach your baby to learn how to speak, read, write and so on, in order to connect with the other humans in this world?

Socialization & the Life Course

And in the midst of all our socialization, we develop personalities. A personality is a person’s fairly consistent patterns of acting, thinking, and feeling. However, the way we think about ourselves isn’t the only thing that factors into our personalities, it’s how we think others view us as well. Yes, I said it! No matter how awesome you think you are, or how many times you say you “don’t care” about how others think of you, you really do.

Socialization & the Life Course

Everyone does, that’s just the way society works, and it what makes each person different. So don’t be shy, get out, get to know people! Be the first to initiate a conversation, because quite frankly socialization isn't going anywhere… unless you’re dead.

PluGGed In

Technology

Everyone knows that technology is always advancing, and can be difficult to keep up with, and I’m here to keep you abreast on all the buzz. As of this month, house keys are so 2013. Why carry around an extra set of keys for your house, that you may end up misplacing…when you could be getting in on the Goji Smart Lock action? This lock premiered at the Consumer Electronic Show, showcasing all of it’s mind blowing specs. This lock allows you to manage your front or back door access, while you're away from home! Now I know some of you may be saying, well that type of technology isn’t necessarily new, and you’re right! We’ve seen this type of technology with Lockitron, Kwikset Kevo and the August Smart Lock but what makes Goji distinct from others is the addition of the camera-notifier.

The Goji Smart Lock takes pictures of who is at your door and automatically sends you picture alerts to your mobile phone, providing you with real-time information about who is accessing your home. Should a knocker come twist your knob, the 1megapixel camera will snap their portrait and alert you to their presence, allowing you final say in who gets to come in. You can also choose to receive text notifications about all the activity around your Goji Smart Lock to your mobile phone. All activity is recorded and logged by the system, and is available for review at any time via the Goji Mobile App or from your online account. You can send access to your home to anyone via text or email; you can set up the access to be unlimited or to include specific date/day and time parameters. You can also cancel or change the access parameters at anytime.

The Goji Smart Lock is optimized to be used with your phone, but you can also use electronic Bluetooth fobs to lock and unlock your door. Similar to a car's remote, they can also be programmed with time and date access rights. Every Goji Smart Lock also comes with two mechanical keys as backups just in case you ever need them. This new lock seems like an awesome security mechanism BUT is this just another way for our government to invade in on our privacy. I mean, yes, this lock is above the ordinary, with it’s new age specs, but would one suppose that there’s more to this? Where are the pictures that are being taken stored? What about the fact that the whole system is not only logged into a bigger system but connected to your smart phone?

No matter how “safe” and “coded” you claim your information to be, is still can be hacked into. Once any information has been entered into the cyber world, it can never be deleted. But just know that when investing in these hitech devices, the real reason for them being created is never solely meant for our benefit. But, this is still a pretty nifty gadget. And for those of you are interested in this contraption, the Android- and iOS-compatible security system is available for pre-order online and will ship in March. It will also be coming to Staples and other retail outlets soon.

UNKNOWN HISTORY (Inventor of the Super Soaker)

Article written by Enoch Crooks

Super Soaker Inventor Lonnie Johnson, born October 6, 1949, conceived of a novelty water gun powered by air pressure in 1982 when he conducted an experiment at home on a heat pump that used water instead of Freon. This experimentation, which resulted in Johnson shooting a stream of water across his bathroom into the tub, led directly to the development of the Power Drencher, the precursor to the Super Soaker. The top selling toy in the United States in 1991 and 1992, have generated over $200 million in sales since 1990. Today, many websites are devoted to them. Johnson is president and founder of Johnson Research and Development Co., Inc., a technology development company, and its spin off companies, Excellatron Solid State, LLC; Johnson Electro-Mechanical Systems, LLC; and Johnson Real Estate Investments, LLC. Articles on Lonnie Johnson have appeared in numerous publications including Time Magazine, the New York Times, and Inventor’s Digest. Johnson serves on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Alliance for Children, an organization which serves as an informed and influential voice to protect the rights and interests of Georgia’s less fortunate children. He is a Board member of the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Commonwealth National Bank. In his hometown of Marietta, Georgia, February 25, 1994 was declared "Lonnie G. Johnson Day" in his honor.

MOTIVATIONAL

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Answers to last month’s riddle: The letter "e," which is the most common letter in the English language, does not appear once in the long paragraph... “This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so plain you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out.”

The winning Answer: Although there was an overwhelming response to the riddle, however, there were no correct answers for the riddle. Thanks to everyone who attempted to answer the riddle!

RIDDLE A man went to a party and drank some of the punch. He then left early. Everyone else at the party who drank the punch subsequently died of poisoning. Why did the man not die?

The truth about GMOS.

The truth about GMOS. Article By Dr. Don Colbert Article submitted by Angel Parks

Genetically modified foods were first introduced on the US market in the early nineties. The result is that, today more than 50% of the world’s genetically modified crops are planted in the US. According to a survey conducted by the International Food Information Council (IFIC), only 40% of people in the US are aware that some of the foods they are buying and eating are composed of genetically modified ingredients. There are several potential dangers that could result from the insertion of a foreign (genetically modified) gene into an organism. These include: Allergy: Allergic reactions occur when a normally harmless protein enters the body and stimulates an immune response. Many children in the US have developed life-threatening allergies to a number of food ingredients such as peanuts. One explanation is that introducing a gene into a plant may cause an allergic reaction in vulnerable people. It is also possible that a new allergen is created by the addition of a foreign gene. .

Decreased Nutritional Value: A genetically modified plant usually has a lower nutritional value than its unaltered form. It has been reported that an inserted gene could stimulate the plant to produce higher levels of phytate, a compound that binds with minerals and makes them unavailable to humans. Another study conducted by Bakshi in 2003 that a strain of genetically modified soybean created very low amounts of phytoestrogen compounds. These compounds, found in traditional soybeans, are known to provide protection against cancer and heart ailments. You may be surprised to learn that most popular food brands use genetically modified organisms. Some manufacturers that claim to offer natural foods actually use genetically modified ingredients. The best way to avoid buying or consuming GMOs is to beware of the companies that use them. Some of the manufacturers that use genetically modified organisms in their food production are: Nestle, Coco Cola, Kellogg’s, Craft, Quaker, General Mills, Mars, Unilever, Pepsico, Heinz, Peter Pan, and Hansen.
