At Dominican Academy, community is more than a word—it is the heartbeat of our school. It is present in the laughter shared in our hallways, the collaboration in our classrooms, and the collective spirit of our students, faculty, staff, alumnae, and friends.

Letter from the President

Dear Parents, Alumnae, and Friends,

I am delighted to share Dominican Academy’s 2023–2024 Annual Giving Report with you. This document is more than a compilation of numbers; it is a celebration of the generosity and dedication that sustains our mission. Each contribution represents a powerful affirmation of our commitment to the Dominican pillars of Community, Service, Study, and Prayer, which continue to guide and inspire our work.

The pillar of Community in particular resonates strongly with me as I reflect on our daily work. At Dominican Academy, community is more than a word—it is the heartbeat of our school. It is present in the laughter shared in our hallways, the collaboration in our classrooms, and the collective spirit of our students, faculty, staff, alumnae, and friends.

As benefactors, you too, are part of this community of steadfast support, enabling us to nurture young women who will go forth as compassionate leaders. Your contributions allow us to provide a rigorous academic program, support a wide range of sports, and offer extracurricular activities like our global trips and the Model U.N., which are life-changing. Because of you, students thrive in an environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, encourages acts of service, and deepens faith through prayer.

While the numbers in this report are impressive, they only begin to tell the story of your impact. They represent the resources that enable a student to discover her potential, the merit scholarships and financial aid that make a D.A. education accessible for

about 50% of our students, and the opportunities that prepare our graduates to excel in college and beyond.

On behalf of our students and the entire D.A. family, thank you for your unwavering support. Together, we are building a community where each member is valued and celebrated. Please know that you are always in our prayers, and we look forward to welcoming you at upcoming D.A. events.

Peace and all Good,

Letter from the board of Trustees Chair

Dear Alumnae, Faculty, Students, Parents, and Friends,

It is an honor to serve as a board chair, a task that is one of great joy for me as a proud alumna. In this role, I have the responsibility to ensure a sound future for the Dominican Academy community. In doing so, D.A. is a primary focus of my philanthropic giving, and I do this gladly because I believe in the faculty, staff, and the girls. Above all, I believe in the enduring mission of Dominican Academy.

D.A. has been the cornerstone of my dearest friendships and has shaped much of who I am today. I believe many of you share similar sentiments. In these times of high inflation, it’s crucial to remember that our beloved school, which has been instrumental in our lives, needs our heroic and generous support.

Just as your own budgets have been challenged by the increased costs for goods, Dominican Academy’s budget has also been affected by these external economic realities. From first-hand experience working closely with the administration, I know that D.A. runs a carefully monitored budget. Your voluntary contributions play a crucial role in this. Your support is not just appreciated; it’s integral to our success.

And we have room to grow in this area!

The Annual Giving Report is our stewardship report, conveying our deep gratitude and careful fiscal management of your generosity.

Over the course of the year, the development team works hard to provide you with mailings, online opportunities, and other ways to make an annual contribution. I’d like to be able to count on each of you to take this opportunity to make a meaningful contribution and, if you can, to increase your offering from last year.

I hope this short note has piqued your interest and that you will consider making an Annual Fund pledge or gift right now or as soon as possible. Your support is greatly anticipated and will make a significant difference.

Sincerely,

D.A. has been the cornerstone of my dearest friendships and has shaped much of who I am today. I believe many of you share similar sentiments. In these times of high inflation, it’s crucial to remember that our beloved school, which has been instrumental in our lives, needs our heroic and generous support.

Letter from the Executive Director of Development

Dear Dominican Academy Community ,

I am delighted to write my third letter as executive director of development and to express gratitude for the care and financial support from our alumnae, parents, foundations, friends, faculty, and staff during the 2023–2024 academic year.

We are proud to share that the $1.9M raised is the largest fundraising amount in over five years. We could not have achieved this without you!

We are mission partners. Whether religious or laity, we offer varied interests, skills, and financial capacity to provide a rigorous curriculum, many student-led clubs, a champion athletic program, and long-beloved and new traditions. Equally important is a safe space for our students to grow and experience those invaluable moments that lead to reaching their full potential, which we also offer.

I have heard affirmations from many alumnae who indicated that the

collective influence that they received at D.A. was more than academic: “D.A. is a haven,” “an empowering experience,” and a place where “young women are pushed to excel and to find themselves.” Another graduate shared, “It was a nurturing environment that shaped my education and prepared me for the challenges ahead.”

Our mission is clear—we are preparing our young women to go forth into the world to achieve their full potential and to be passionate about humanity and others who are less fortunate than themselves. With your support, we are confident in our ability to uphold this commitment and ensure the success of every student at Dominican Academy.

Your enthusiasm inspires us all to reach greater heights. With you and God’s grace, Dominican Academy, the only allhonors Catholic preparatory high school for girls in New York State, will continue to thrive.

Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire.
St. Catherine of Siena

One of St. Catherine of Siena’s most famous quotes is, “Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire.” This quote reminds me that each of us has a unique purpose and calling, and only when we embrace our true selves can we make a difference in the world. We have the power to ignite change and transform the lives of the students entrusted to our care at D.A.

With sincere gratitude,

1897 Legacy Circle

Membership in The 1897 Legacy Circle is offered to all those who endorse the mission of Dominican Academy and who affirm their commitment by means of a planned gift. We recognize these benefactors today for their generosity of tomorrow. We are grateful to the following donors who have already notified the Development Office that they have included Dominican Academy in their estate planning.

Leaving a Legacy of Gratitude

My love for Dominican Academy began long before I enrolled. Growing up on East 68th Street, I often heard tales of D.A. from my babysitter. Her descriptions of the magnificent building, adorned with chandeliers and fireplaces in the classrooms and filled with her intelligent, ambitious girlfriends aspiring to attend college, captivated me. I often walked past D.A., sneaking peeks at the students and the beautiful architecture, always dreaming that one day I’d be fortunate enough to be a part of it.

My dream came true in September 1973 when I began attending D.A. New York City in the 1970s was a gritty place facing significant challenges, but it was also a time of cultural innovation and social movements. D.A. became my sanctuary—a place where I could dedicate myself to academics, forge lasting friendships and grow spiritually. It was a space where my classmates and I engaged in open discussions with our teachers about the pressing issues of the city and nation, gaining insight from multiple perspectives and developing our own viewpoints. This transformative power of education is what inspires me to this day.

One of my favorite D.A. activities was Education in the City. Three or four times a year, we would go to a museum, attend a concert or ballet at Lincoln Center, or see a Broadway show. Each year, our class would go to a Shakespeare production that matched the play we were studying. This exposure to the arts not only gave me a wonderful appreciation for culture but also a lifelong love of the theatre, showing me the value of a well-rounded education.

I attended Lehigh University and graduated with a BS in Biology and an MBA in Management. The academic rigor and the moral and spiritual foundation I received at Dominican Academy equipped me to thrive in college and beyond. I started my career in Hospital Administration and moved into management consulting with Accenture. I loved traveling and working for different companies and industries. After I had my daughter, I wanted less travel, so I worked for smaller consulting firms. I ended my career at Prudential in Newark as a Program Manager for HR.

Over the years, I have stayed connected with D.A. I was on the Alumnae Board in the 1990s and a member of the Board of Trustees. As a proud member of the class of 1977, I organized and, of course, attended my reunions. As we are approaching retirement and have more free time, meeting my classmates for lunch or dinner has been so much fun. We still have so much in common.

My husband and I are children of immigrants. Our parents’ biggest dream was that we receive a strong education so we could pursue our dreams. Dominican Academy was the springboard for my life’s journey, so establishing and endowing The Mary Jo Wrenn ’77 and Raj Tahil Scholarship to offer a full four-year education to a promising young woman in perpetuity is my way of expressing my gratitude. This scholarship will provide financial support and transform the recipients’ lives, just as D.A. did for me.
