Network of Sustainable Greek Islands
European level
The Network of Sustainable Greek Islands (DAFNI) is a non-profit organisation established in 2006 that seeks to create opportunities and support initiatives towards the sustainable development of Greek islands. To accomplish its strategic goals, DAFNI founded in 2008 the Aegean Energy and Environment Agency (AEGEA). AEGEA serves as technical advisor to DAFNI, catalysing collaboration between the private sector and island authorities for the maturation and realization of sustainable projects on islands In the last couple of years, DAFNI has expanded its field of activity by putting forward integrated solutions to islands’ resource & infrastructure management, seeking to maximize synergies between energy, mobility, waste and water.
Network of Sustainable Greek Islands
To this end, the Spatial & Mobility Planning Department was established in 2015, shedding light on the significant, yet largely untapped potential of islands to excel in sustainable mobility.
Sustainable Island Mobility
Sustainable Island Mobility Plan (SIMP) is an innovative tool currently under development by DAFNI. SIMP resembles SUMP, yet accounts for islands’ intrinsic characteristics when introducing sustainable mobility measures on islands. Electromobility, hiking and cycling tourism, maritime transport, sharing mobility schemes, smart ports and airports and Mobility as a Service (MaaS) are some of the focus areas of SIMP. Sifnos Island has just started (Sep17) the elaboration of the 1st SIMP in Europe under the supporting of DAFNI.
