COMMUNITY CENTER IN JIHLAVA

A

Jihlava Prague Jihlava

Jihlava is a center of Vysocina region with 50 710 inhabitants. It was settled at the end of 12th century and it started developing quickly and massively after silver was found there in the middle of 13th century. At those times Jihlava was one of the most powerful cities in Czech kingdom and the main square which was settled back then is still the third biggest square in the Czech Republic (first two are in Prague). The most important economic sector nowadays is mechanical engineering specialized in automotive. People visit Jihlava to see it’s medieval underground, ZOO and aquapark.

Horni Kosov is residential quarter located in suburbs of Jihlava. There are mostly blocks of flats from 60‘s, family houses and almost no civic amenities. Acces into this neighborhood is difficult due to some barriers going through the city and a long interval of public transport (bus goes there only twice a day!). Adjoining quarter Na Dolech was build in last 20 years which means a high incŕease of inhabitants in a short time period. Due a building for a community center to a fast and nonconceptual development which should be the first initiator of a of the neighborhood, many blind development of the quarter. spots originated in the urban structure. The most significant one is Vrchlickeho Street between the two neighborhoods. It‘s lifeless, hard to cross and doesn‘t connect anything. In my thesis I dealt with D1 this situation by changing it into a linear center, connecting both neighborhoods and creating healthy functioning city quarter with its own identity. I designed D1

PUBLIC SPACE Community center should be publicly available and open platform offering space for building social connections and supporting the identity of the neighborhood. It is a meeting point for all generations with many possibilities of spending free time and giving the reason for a stop during everyday transport.

08

Placing the community center on an intersection of pedestrian routes used as shortcuts helps to fulfill this purpose. What is more, the house is helping to overcome this part of a journey even for disabled people who can‘t go that way otherwise because there is a quite steep hill and no pavement.

SITE RELATIONS

The slope also helps the house to respond to heights of different typologies of surrounding houses since the community center is on the border of an area with blocks of flats and an area full of family houses. Thanks to this laying the house can fit in Vrchlickeho street line full of 4 - 6 story buildings and not to exceed the height of the family houses at the same time.

House is formed from the inside. First I defined a staircase on an intersection of 10 pedestrian routes making these paths more easily 30 overcome. 20

Then I completed the urban structure with masses in the scale of surrounding typologies and composed them in a regular raster.

All parts were connected to make the vestibule interior space which can be used for a variety of purposes in every weather.

The core of the house is a multipurpose public space in which pedestrian routes intersect. The height difference is overcome by a staircase which can serve also as a ballroom, lecture room, seating for a cafe or a club room for board games, etc. This way space can be used in many different ways, people can just walk through, stop by for a while or spend there whole afternoon.

INTERIOR OF THE CULTURAL CENTER IN MNISEK POD BRDY

A

In this project I was designing an interior for a cultural center in Mnisek pod Brdy I designed earlier during my bachelor studies (see the study on page 40). Designing interior in my own project was a great experience which made me think about every next project in a more complex way, keeping in mind future design of an interior from the very beginning of the design even though I might not be the one designing it. I had to change the shape of the main load bearing structure to make the building look more representative. Former structure was designed in the simplest form to learn how to deal with wooden structures since I was doing statics for it too and had to count it precisely for a building documentation. Along with the structure I also changed a facade from corten to polycarbonate which allowed me to play with light and transparency. I used the simplest color scheme - only black, white and wooden to make stand out the light. White surfaces of a bar, railings, and ceiling in the foyer are translucent with a linear backlighting in the shape of the load-bearing structure. Part of the assignment was also production documentation of the main staircase in the foyer.

NEW PURPOSE FOR A WATERTOWER IN ROUDNICE NAD LABEM

A

Roudnice nad Labem

Water tower in Roudnice nad Labem is located at the outskirt of the town besides the bank of Labe river. There is a railway along the river which creates a barrier between the water tower and the rest of the town. On the other bank of the river opposite the water tower is a sports center. The Labe River in this part is no longer suited for swimming but it‘s still used for sailing boats, canoes, and even windsurfing when the weather is good for it. I took advantage of the verticality of the tower a created a kind of cultural lighthouse out of it. It serves for several free time or cultural activities - there is a surf rental in the ground floor, the first floor is a reception for a hotel and the remaining floors above would be a cafe with an art gallery which is placed on perimeter galleries. Middle parts connect all floors of the gallery and allow light from a top skylight through a glass floor in the first and second floor down to a ground floor. There can also be placed a headlight at the top to announce a new upcoming show. Caffe galleries can be served by a vertical running sushi kind of system since it has our floors. The tower has 7 floors with a very small floor plan so using the whole site for additional housing was necessary. I wanted the water tower to stay the most significant part of the composition so I used only shipping containers and terrain forming for the housing. Container hotel would serve tourists coming to Roudnice by boat from Prague, people staying here for windsurfing or just tourists coming to visit Roudnice and its surroundings.

COMMON LIFE OF THE FAMILY/GALLERY PRIVACY RELAX

KA ZO KU

MAIN PRINCIPLES OF THE DESIGN: ● FREE PLANNING ● VARIABILITY ● CONNECTION BETWEEN INTERIOR SPACES ● CONNECTION WITH THE EXTERIOR ● ZNONIG IN BOTH VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LINES

The assignment of my bachelor thesis was a family house in a luxurious housing quarter in Prague with one additional function. First I precisely defined the investor - businessman collecting Japanese art with his family. Surrealistic this might be, I tried to design a house meeting all his needs. The main theme of the house is a connection between family members which is represented by a continuous space going from top to bottom of the house. This allows contact between family members during the whole day even if they are in different parts of the house. This core serves for daily activities as well as the gallery displaying Japanese art collections. Middle part has a glass facade to bring light to a staircase and a depth of the house. The whole story of this house is packed in simple rectangular form. Its size responds to a scale of surrounding houses. Interior grades continuously into a garden partly inspired by a Japanese garden. There is a short video about this project available on this link: http://vimeo.com/257386939

Set of buildings is located in a center of Mnisek pod Brdy on an axis between a castle and a church of Saint Venceslav. Designed buildings around main public space help to create a clearly defined square (I.) which is divided into two parts - one is paved and serves as a meeting space (I.A), while the second part in front of a designed library serves as a relaxation zone (I.B). A designed set of buildings creates a permeable border between the inner (I.) and outer (III.) space of the town center. Mass of the building commemorates former farm outhouses which used to be at this place in middle ages. They define the space of the square very clearly but still are on several spots continuous to provide a possibility of connection with the rest of the town (III.B) and a nearby pond (III.A).
