二宮敏泰 Toshiyasu Ninomiya

別府の歓楽街にあった旅館「伊豫亀旅館」で生まれ育ち、街 が妖艶で不思議に輝いていたあの頃、子供心に体験した少年時 代。旅館に泊まる大道芸人、布団部屋や階段下に棲む従業員。 ストリップ劇場から出てくる、明らかに母とはちがう香りのき らびやかな女。街角に佇む植物の様な客引きの女たち。ドロー イングは伊豫亀旅館時代の0歳から13歳までの記憶に支配さ れている。彼が心にしまって、しかし溢れてくるイメージが鉛 筆を走らせ、危うく曖昧な世界がみえてくる。

Born 1st May 1958 in Beppu city, Oita, Japan. He was born and raised in the Iyokame Ryokan inn in the red-light district in Beppu.The city was shining mysteriously and beautifully at that time, He spent his childhood with those people.Street performers staying at the inn, Ryokan staffs staying in the futon storage and under the staircase.A gorgeous woman, who has a fragrance which is obviously different from mother, leaving the strip theater. Plants like touts women standing on the street.His drawings are controlled by his memory from the birth to 13 years old in the ryokan days.Those images he locked up but keep overflowing makes the pencil running and the dangerous and vague world appears.

ドローイングは伊豫亀旅館時代の0歳から13歳までの記憶に支配されている。桟橋につながれた 家のような船。それを移動させる車輪。His drawings are controlled by his memory from the birth to 13 years old in the ryokan days. A house like ship moored to the pier. The wheels to move them.

妖しい光を放つお土産売りの屋台が、旅館から桟橋に向かってに賑わっていた。The street venders with their lights shining glamorously enliven the street from the ryokan to the pier.

番頭さんは知的障がい者。旅館の階段の下の押入れに住んでいた。 The head-clerk had mental disability.He lived in the closet under the stairs of the ryokan.

旅館にはいつも異国の文化が舞い込んだ。Foreign culture always came fluttering into the inn.

少年時代の分身が潜んでいる His other self of his childhood lurks inside.

みんな耳をもたない、耳をかさない。動物か人間か植物か?絵の中だけで対話できていた。ただ虚ろ な眼差しだけがこちらを見ている。No one listens, no one cares. Is it an animal, a man, or a plant? He only could talk to it inside the drawing. It just looks back with its vacant eyes.

一緒に遊んだ友達は、顔つきや装いが違っていた。Friends who played together had differences in their faces and how they dressed.

近所の水族館へよく出かけた。旅館には金魚がいた。He went out to the nearby aquarium. The ryokan had goldfishes.

友の家。足元がふらつく歪んだ家が多かった。 At his friend’s house. Many houses were warped and unsteady on feet.

歓楽街の公園には、見世物小屋やサーカス小屋。The show tent and the circus tent in the park of redlight district.

木造 3 階のビルディング。誘客のため、我先になりふり構わず増築。不自然に壁に張り付いた継ぎ 接ぎだらけの迷路のような家が多かった。The three-story wooden building. Trying to attract guests, the owners scrambled to extend a building without a thought of its looks.There were many houses, which looked like a maze and had many patches sticking on the walls with a peculiar manner.

生まれ育った旅館が壊されてゆく光景が脳裏から離れない。僕の生家の崩壊とともに自分の記憶も 奪われたようだ。With the demolition of his house of birth, he feels like his memory has taken away with it.

いつも同じ場所、通りの明かりの下に佇む女。 The woman who stands on the same spot; under the street light.

狂った客人や、ポン引き、占い師どんな人も遊んでくれた。 Insane visitors, pimps, fortune-tellers, all kinds of people with him.

旅館の客は主に、大道芸人、薬売り、物売り、見世物小屋の興行主。Guests in the inn are mostly street performers, medicine salesmen, street venders, and the owner of the show tent.

宴会騒ぎの賑やかしい通りに心が躍る 赤い格子からあの子を探す 私には好きな人がいる 私の躰は海に浮かぶ海月のよう 世界は仄明るくぼやけ 音は静かに籠る

My heart dances to the street of joyful merrymaking I search for the girl through the red lattice I have someone whom I like My body is like a jellyfish that floats up in the sea My world blurred with faint light Sounds confined quietly

「この本の話 」

この本は、日本の大分県別府市で制作された。この本は、画家 二宮敏泰の画集であるが、彼の絵を描く根源である別府の街の雰囲 気も構成される。画家の記憶に纏わりつく怪しげな歓楽街での日々 は絵を描くという行為でしか表に現れず、人知れず紙と鉛筆で記憶 の消化をしてきた。そのドローイングは数百枚にのぼり、私は偶然 にも隠されてきた少年時代の記憶を目の当たりにした。遊郭や戦後 のアメリカ軍の駐屯地のある別府の歴史を調べフィールドワークし ていた私にとって彼のドローイングはまさに、妖艶かつ異国の雰囲 気を象徴した記憶の形だと感じたのだ。今でも別府の街は、風俗店 や温泉、商店や住居が混在する寛容な地域である。しかし、彼が見 てきたカオスで賑やかな当時の別府が、そこに凝縮されている。そ んな「二宮敏泰の別府」に共感して、こんな世界があってもいい、あっ たほうがいいと思う。そして、たくさんの人々に彼の絵と別府の街 を知って欲しいと、この本を制作したのでした。

"About Thi s Book "

This book was made in Beppu city, Oita pref. Although this book is a book of drawings by Toshiyasu Ninomiya, it also contains the atmosphere of the town of Beppu where Ninomiya gets his inspiration.The days of the mysterious red-light district that cling to the artist’s memory only appears when it is drawn. He has been privately digesting them with papers and pencils.There are over several hundred drawings and I happened to face the hidden memories of his childhood through those drawings. For me who was doing a research and a fieldwork on the history of Beppu with Geisha house during before the World War 2 and the U.S. Army post after WW2, his drawings were the shape of the memories that symbolize the glamorous and exotic atmosphere of the town.The town Beppu is still an indulgent area where brothels and onsens, shops and residences coexist.Yet, even more chaotic and lively Beppu of those days that Ninomiya have seen are concentrated in his drawing.I felt sympathy towards “Ninomiya’s Beppu” and thought that, it would be nice to have such world. It’s better to have such world.I made this book so that many people can get to know about Ninomiya’s drawing and the town of Beppu.
