t took me five years to get my degree in Journalism. I started school in the Fall of 2017.

There were countless setbacks, like my first year getting kicked out of the dorm because I didn’t make payments. Consequently, I could not return to CSULB until I paid my debts.

Then, by the end of my spring semester in 2019 I was put on academic probation because I failed all of my classes. I remember that semester being the hardest because I didn’t have the drive to go to school.

I was tired all the time from working 30-plus hours at a grocery store. I was also depressed from not having friends in a new town and being away from my family.

Learning to be an adult and a full-time college student in a completely new city was a huge adjustment. It was also hard adjusting to the city life. I’m from the desert valley where it’s quiet, open and slow. In Long Beach it’s loud, a bit crowded and moves extremely fast from sun up to sun down.

My Spring 2019 semester did not go as planned and I really wanted to stop pursuing my B.A. I remember telling my father that I wanted to drop out and go to a community college because I wanted to get my A.A. and start working.

At first, he said something like “OK, if that’s what you want.” And at first, I was confident that was what I wanted.

One day, I woke up to an email from him addressing me by my blog name. He started the email by saying, “Dear Tuesday Raine, I’m writing to you as a fan but also as your father.”

He went on to tell me that I may think getting my A.A. and working right away is the right choice, but I’m cutting myself short because having a B.A. will put me ahead of oth-

er applicants in the job field.

I cried after reading that email but then I got to work.

He was right. I needed to finish my degree because the life I wanted to live was not one where I’d struggle or get denied because I didn’t have B.A. So I stayed at CSULB and got my grades right. Within a semester I was off academic probation.

My dad passed away this past October. I remember a few months before he passed I deleted that email because I thought why do I need this? I’m going to graduate and he’ll be right there to tell me “Rainey you did it. I’m so proud of you.”

My heart hurts because he was the only reason I finished getting my bachelor’s. If he never sent that email or stopped encouraging me I would’ve dropped out. It hurts a lot that he won’t see me get my degree, but I know I’ve made him proud and this is only the beginning.

I am undeniably proud of myself for continuing school even though it was difficult. I’m proud of everything I have accomplished this past year! I cannot wait for my future to begin. Let this be a reminder to not give up when times get tough, you got it!

This is my last editor’s note, so thank you for giving me a good year y’all and GO BEACH!

Daily Forty-Niner welcomes next year's Editor-in-Chief

A

s Christal Gaines-Emory finishes up her second year at Long Beach State, she has high hopes to create better connections with the Beach community and build positive structures in the Daily Forty-Niner newsroom that will last for years.

Before starting her journalism career at the Beach in August 2021, Gaines-Emory was at her hometown’s newspaper, Fallbrook & Bonsall Village News holding the positions of social media manager, editorial assistant, and staff writer during her time there.

“I finished up my senior year of high school working [at Village News]. And at the same time I was also working three other jobs,” said Gaines-Emory. “Doing journalism things there [like] social media, media coordinating and press releases.”

During her senior year of high school, Gaines-Emory worked as a chapter reporter for the Future Farmers of America (FFA) writing press releases about the organi-

zation and sending them to local media outlets for coverage.

In fall 2021, Gaines-Emory joined the Daily Forty-Niner editorial team as the Arts and Life Editor and was always reliable, especially with quick deadlines.

During her time as the Arts and Life Editor, she improved the section by giving a spotlight to local artists and providing eye-catching visuals.

“I’ve always loved arts,” said Gaines-Emory. “I’ve always gravitated towards arts. Just because I’ve always liked learning about all the artist and I liked learning about the culture and the community.”

Gaines-Emory applied to be Editor in Chief because she felt her personality embodies what it takes to be a good leader. She can take criticism, is straightforward, on top of deadlines, confident and has been a team leader in other groups.

Lenila Batali, the Executive Director at D’vine Path and Gaines-Emory pervious boss, stands by her passion and work ethic.

“Christal is probably the hardest working, most dedicated person I have ever met,” said Batali. “Not only is her work ethic outstanding, she is also a genuine person with a huge heart.”

As the newly hired Editor in

Chief, Gaines-Emory hopes to create a team that is diverse and understands when it’s okay to be friends with each other and when it’s time to work. She also wants to make the 49er more accessible to the community.

“I feel a lot of people on campus have this idea of who the Daily Forty-Niner is and what our organization represents,” she said.

“I’m hoping to stray away from that a little bit because there’s been a lot of judgment of that in the past.”

Outside of being a fantastic journalist, Gaines-Emory loves to bake or give people food she says that’s her “love language.”

She also loves just being at the beach (her favorite beach around LB is Bolsa Chica) and hanging out with her cats or friends. She loves ramen and boba and is a “plant nerd” who also loves floral designing.

One year from now, Gaines-Emory hopes to apply to some bigger internships and be proud of the work she has done at the 49er.

“We are a publication doing our best and trying to inform the people around us because we are journalists and that is what we do and like everyone we make mistakes sometimes.,” Gaines-Emory said. “Overall I want people to see that we are people too.”

ssac Julian takes over as the new president of Associated Students, Inc. this June as the former president, Jesus Gonzalez, graduates from Long Beach State with a sociology major and political science minor.

Julian, a double major in political science and English composition, said his motivation to run for ASI president was the hope of repairing the communication barrier between students and faculty.

“In my role as an academic affairs officer, I was able to do just that,” Julian said.

“I was able to keep students in the loop on what was going on in the academic side, as well as keeping faculty up to date with what students wanted.”

Gonzalez worked with Julian last year to campaign against the plus/minus grading system that was proposed at CSULB. “That was a tough campaign,” Gonzalez said. “[Julian] took a majority of the lead.”

For the campaign, Julian created a survey for students to voice their opinion on the proposal. Gonzalez said they received around 9,000 responses from students, the biggest response ASI had seen at CSULB, with a majority vote against the plus/minus grading system.

During Gonzalez’s term, the former president also proposed Grocery Assis-

tance under the Basic Needs Program with CalFresh. This resource assists in eliminating food insecurity barriers for qualified students and international students on campus.

“Students are able to use this fund for purchasing food. Some of the benefits are that they are able to get up to $200 a month,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said this proposal was a response to his personal experience of being denied access to CalFresh because of his undocumented status.

“We’re going to be the first CSU to have this program available in the 23 universities,” Gonzalez said. “I hope I can continue inspiring other CSUs to develop more additional programming.”

Gonzalez said his favorite memory during his term was at the 2021 Convocation, an annual celebration for CSULB faculty and staff before the start of the academic school year, where he made his first public speech.

“It’s the best event because I was able to introduce myself to the community,” Gonzalez said. “I was able to speak not just to the student body but to the whole university.”

He hopes other undocumented students use him as an example to pursue their college education, despite the struggles and challenges.

“When you’re interested in college, research on the community, research how many students are undocumented... You don’t have to disclose your status,” Gonzalez said. “It’s up to you because it’s who you are, it’s doable.”

Seniors prepare to illustrate their next chapter following graduation

PAID ADVERTISEMENT eniors are finishing up final art projects before graduation from May 16 to May 18 at Angels Stadium in Anaheim.

There is a diverse number of art majors set to attend commencement.

These projects include scripts, paintings, designs and more.

Karla Maldonado and Alejandra Diaz, film majors with a focus on screenwriting theory and production, are two students from the Film and Electronics Art program that will be walking at commencement next

month.

“I just finished my future film script and also wrote a comedy pilot as well,” Diaz said. “We worked on our film scripts for about two years. My film is like a psychological thriller crime drama and it is about a murder mystery set, different type dimension stuff.”

While Diaz took a psychological approach to the film, Maldonado struck a realistic approach towards their final project and applied personal experiences into their work.

“I am close to finishing it and that is about my cancer journey because I had cancer when I was 16,” Maldonado said. “I wanted to represent cancer in a way that is accurate and not romanticizing it. It is not something fictional, but based on true events.”

When asked how they felt about graduating and plans afterwards, both Diaz and Maldonado agreed that more freedom in their work is the most exciting part of life after graduation. They shared that they will both enjoy no longer following limited prompts, they believe their creativity and imagination in writing will become unlimited and set at their own pace.

“I will be free of constraints and also no more pressure of deadlines and the ‘I am going to be graded on this’ type thing,” Diaz said.

Fashion design major with a minor in fashion merchandising, Ysabel Hilado is another student in the arts finalizing designs for an upcoming senior project.

“Currently, I am working on my collection for the Campus Couture fashion show on May 6,” she said. “I have been in college for six years now and I am so excited. I feel ready to move forward with my career.”

With over 42,000 followers on Instagram, Hilado does not plan to slow down anytime soon. She plans to take her career to the next level after commencement with plans to showcase her designs and continue making content creations on her social media.

“I am going to continue working on my brand, Hilado,” she said. “I will be moving towards getting some of my core designs manufactured in Los Angeles and start selling them within the next year or two. With that, I will also continue to share my designs online and build my social media presence because I am passionate about content creation. Overall, I will be making a name for myself in this industry and I love taking people along the journey.”

As many seniors prepare to begin their new chapter, some are still in somewhat of a disbelief that they are graduating. Jasper Sumano Velasco, majoring in illustration with a focus on animation, felt neutral about commencement.

“It has not really hit me that my time at the university is coming to an end,” Velasco said. “For the most part, this will be the last time I will be in school.”

Like the others, Velasco is working on final projects for his classes.

“Currently, I am working in the visual development of a short film that revolves around a parent and child starting to reconnect through cooking,” he said.

After graduation, Velasco hopes to apply for apprenticeships after working off some of his loans.

After years of dedication and hard work, senior art students prepare themselves for their lives after graduation and finalize their future plans.

henever I ask fellow college students what they plan on doing with their degree after graduating, they often tell me “I don’t know” or “I plan on applying to grad school.”

First off, you’re not alone.

About 36% of seniors in universities don’t feel prepared for their career, according to a 2020 LendEDU-College Pulse survey.

Figuring out the next step after graduation can be nerve-racking. We, college students, feel that we’re supposed to have our lives figured out after college but that’s not always the case.

Here are some options to consider to start the next chapter of your life:

Travel

Graduates tend to take advantage of their newly found free time for exploration and travel after college graduation. Where they can encounter new experiences, learn about new cultures, and meet new people.

Traveling is the right choice to make if you want to invest in yourself and wish to explore.

Join the workforce

Some may have opportunities lined up right after graduation while others may start applying. Whether you want to enter the workforce immediately or take time off to figure out future plans, everyone has a different path and career plan for their future. College is a foundation, go build the life you actually want.

I believe that there is a set expectation in today’s society that our lives should be together after our college experience. With graduation around the corner, I’m still going through periods of uncertainty in my life.

The world tells us that a successful career and money should be our goals in life. We should stop comparing and feeling the pressures of societal expectations.

Let’s decide what happiness and achievement means for each and every one of us.

Be happy you’ve come this far and accomplished a great milestone in your life. The next step is in your hands on your own terms.

ears roll down my cheeks as it all hits me at once. I am a first-generation college graduate. Letting that fact sink in is something I hadn’t allowed myself to do yet.

I will be graduating from a university I had only dreamed of attending, and earning a degree in a field I never knew I would love so much. But mi camino al exito, “my path to success,” was not an easy one.

As the eldest daughter of a Hispanic household, a lot of responsibility and pressure is put on my shoulders. Some of which I put on myself. A common feeling among first-generation students.

Making sure I am doing my best in classes, putting effort into the work I do, keeping up with family and friends, and setting goals for the future are the pressures I put on myself while attending school.

Even writing this, I put pressure on myself to make sure I’m a voice that represents all

first-generation graduates while still remembering to be true to myself.

It seems like it’s a never-ending venture of growing and learning how to do things to make yourself and others proud, especially your family.

But reaching these big milestones like graduating from a university does lift a lot of that pressure and serves as a reminder of why you are working so hard.

I have been fortunate that my family has been one of my biggest support systems throughout my college education. They encouraged me to attend community college, giving me the confidence to pursue a degree in journalism, and would check in on me when I would put too much on my plate.

Even though my parents were there to support me, I had to learn to do things they have never seen before and solve difficult problems on my own.

Figuring out how to apply for FAFSA, paying my tuition, and making sure that I met all my requirements to be sure I graduated on time are a few of the ways I had to figure out academia on my own.

The journey of a first-generation graduate is one full of excitement and pressure to reach a life-long goal. my mental health. Creating other support systems to help me navigate university life and my future career. All that and more I have accomplished on my own merit.

I’ve had struggles uniquely my own, but I want to acknowledge that I have also been privileged to be able to attend a university without other worries that other first-generation students may have. Especially my friends who are DACA recipients.

Fortunately, Long Beach State is a very inclusive university. The 2021 ranking in Hispanic Outlook on Education magazine, named CSULB “a national leader in the number of degrees awarded to Hispanic students,”

according to university officials.

Inclusivity made it easy to find a group of friends who understood the worth ethic and pressures of being a first-generation student comes with. I have made long-lasting friends and I can’t wait to see what they all do in the near future.

Being proud of my colleagues also reminds me to be proud of myself right alongside them. Even if others see being a first-generation graduate as a label given without any worth, I give it meaning.

The person who gave it their all and is proud to say they come from a Hispanic home, who embraces their culture and will

continue to do so because it is something that I am very proud of.

My mother always told me that no matter what happens in life, the one thing no one can ever take away from you is your education, and I’m glad I’ve learned so much and will soon have the diploma in my hands that proves I did so.

To all the 2022 graduates who are first-generation students to ever graduate from a university in the U.S., I know your family and friends are proud of you, I’m proud of you. I hope you are proud of yourself too. I can’t wait to see how we all make an impact on the world.

College taught me to prioritize my mental health to achieve success

After a long academic journey, I’ll be graduating this May with my bachelor’s in journalism.

hen I graduated high school in May 2015, I had no idea what I was going to do with my life at 18 years old. I was pressured by my family to pick a major, and it stressed me out.

I didn’t care about the general education classes such as math, history, and science because they were all boring to me. I would often tell myself : “School is seriously not for me.”

But, I proved myself wrong.

The difference was that I didn’t have a “plan” set in stone, and I didn’t know what my passions were yet. So, instead of going to a four-year university right after high school, I enrolled at Cypress College to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

Let me tell you, it was a totally difficult transition for me, especially because I struggled with my mental health. It took almost five years for me to get my associate’s degree in journalism.

I suffered from untreated anxiety disorder and depression during my first three years in community college because I was too prideful

to ask for help. Being raised in an old-fashioned Latinx household made me believe that therapy is for “crazy people,” and medication will lead to addiction.

However, if I didn’t seek mental health services during my fourth year at Cypress College, I would have contributed to a demographic where more than half of Latinx individuals ages 18 to 25 fail to seek mental health treatments such as therapy and antidepressants.

During my first semester at Cypress College, I took a human biology class because I was interested in the medical field, but failed the course because I was terrible at memorizing scientific terms and body parts.

It discouraged me, but also helped me realize being a STEM major wasn’t for me. I didn’t enjoy the long nights of trying to learn about blood types or the different parts of the brain.

So, I changed my major to English because it was one of my favorite subjects growing up, especially when I got to write persuasive or argumentative essays.

But, I was wrong again. The English classes were boring because I wasn’t passionate about learning World Literature or Shakespeare in order to get a degree. So, not only was I undecided for a second time, but I started to feel hopeless and had a strong urge to drop out of school.

Four years went down the drain. Just like that.

At least that’s what I thought until I decided to sign up for an Introduction to Journalism course, and the rest was history.

I actually went to school ready to learn and was so engaged in the class discussions about “What’s going on in the world?” regarding current event topics and the importance of news journalism.

It was exciting and motivating.

I felt like I finally picked the right major.

I dedicated an entire year to the journalism program by being involved in the Cypress Chronicle newspaper and also taking the required courses to obtain an associate’s degree.

The day I applied to graduate from Cypress College was the most emotional moment for me because even though I wanted to give up so many times, I pushed through the obstacles.

Getting a college degree isn’t a race, I chose quality over quantity.

Sure, it was discouraging seeing other people graduate college before me, but I had to keep reminding myself that I’m on my own timeline and that’s okay.

Now, I’m in my last semester at Long Beach State graduating with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

I chose myself, my mental health, and my self-discovery over graduating college “on time,” which led me to meet some lifelong friends at CSULB. Even though success is valuable, so is my happiness.

Dear 2022 graduates The mountain of college is no doubt a difficult one to navigate, but the view at the end is worth every sleepless minute.

hile walking on any college campus, you are likely to observe many exhausted and debt-ridden students hurrying to class, stressing over assignments, or sleeping on benches.

It can be a pitiful sight to witness, and an even harder one to endure as a student who takes on all the difficulties that come with being a person pursuing higher education.

Graduates: The hardships you have endured in order to hold a degree to your name outweigh the sleepless nights and student loans that will have to be paid back.

Why? Because all of you in four years or more, have created a better life for yourselves. Not only financially, but with your relationships, education, and ability to grow developmentally.

And you’re going to be okay.

You’re going to do great because you’ve done the work to set yourself up for success.

You’re all qualified to go into your prospective fields because you have done the work, you know the material, and you are more prepared to be jumping into your careers than you think you are.

And you were even able to navigate your education and learning through the chaos and disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.

You’re all incredibly resilient and accomplished young adults with a bright future to look forward to as you graduate from The Beach.

If you’re scared that you won’t find a job, don’t be. You have more of an advantage than non-degree holders so be confident in yourself.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports in 2020 that people with a bachelor’s degree had a weekly salary that was 67% higher than those with just high school diplomas. On average, bachelor’s degree holders are making $24,900 more than high school graduates.

So yes, you can take that graduation trip to the Bahamas.

Further, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for people with a bachelor’s degree was 2.3% while for people without a bachelor’s degree was 4.6% in January 2022.

You have job security. Stop worrying so much.

Also, you’re at another advantage because you’ve attended a university with a diverse demographic and psychographic student body. That has improved your ability to think critically, expand empathy, explore new ideas, and grow developmentally.

Working with your peers from diverse backgrounds has been exceptionally beneficial to your brain development and ability to form relationships.

And all the life-long friendships you’ve created throughout college have been formed during some of the hardest moments of your life.

You have learned how to navigate being away from home, how to provide for yourself and be your own advocate, and how to juggle numerous responsibilities.

The bonds you’ve made throughout these difficult moments in college have shaped you into the person you are and have prepared you for the long road ahead. These people will be there for you as you enter the next phase of your life.

In addition to these friendships, there is a wide networking pool that will become available to you.

So hopefully you were kind to everyone and participated in all those group presentations.

However many years it took you to graduate, the student body, the faculty, and the staff of CSULB are all extremely proud of the opportunity you took to gain an advantage in life. The mountain of college is no doubt a difficult one to navigate, but the view at the end is worth every sleepless minute.

So, to the graduating class, stand proud on commencement day and reflect on all that you have accomplished in your educational, professional, and personal life.

Congratulations class of 2022.

Senior Naomi Hernandez reflects on her time at The Beach

B

eing a student-athlete at Long Beach State teaches a lot to the students and holds memories they will forever

hold.

Senior softball player, outfielder Naomi Hernandez has played for The Beach for five seasons and she has left a remarkable impression on and off the softball field at LBSU. Hernandez came from Norco High School, where she was a four-year starter. In her senior year, she hit .509 with 27 RBI and held a school record of 43 runs scored. Hernandez also led her team to a 33-1 overall record as a senior, reaching the CIF Southern Section finals.

Since arriving at The Beach in 2018, she felt a connection with the coaches and staff from the start. She had an amazing first season where she was named the Big West Freshman Player of the Year.

She continued with a great season in 2019 where she earned All-Big West honors for the second season straight and earned Honorable Mentions. In 2020, she started the season with a fourgame hitting streak and was part of a team-best nine-game base reached streak.

In 2021, she was a first-team All-Big West selection and earned third-team All-West Region honors as an outfielder.

Throughout her four years playing, Hernandez was an everyday starter for Long Beach State.

She found herself playing different positions on the team before finding her home in the outfield this year.

“I’m very happy with the progress I made with the program, I learned plenty of new things on the field that I will always hold onto,” Hernandez said.

Andy Fee, the executive director of athletics, highlights her consistency and is proud of the rewarding progress she has on the team.

“One thing I will always remember about Naomi is how

consistent she is, she always delivered,” Fee said. “When you can count on someone like Naomi, it’s a reminder that you have the right people in your program.”

Out of many memories at The Beach, her favorite was when her team recently won the conference championship in 2021.

“It was a surreal moment, and

it was one of the most fun moments I had with my team,” Hernandez said. “Especially because of the team itself, the connections, and friendships I made from the

team are the biggest highlights and biggest memory I will forever take from here.”

Hernandez is pursuing a career in nursing, but still plans to have a connection with softball by teaching private lessons for younger players to assist them in their hitting and fielding.

Best friend and former teammate who played at LBSU two years ago, Jamie Wren, also hosts private lessons and invited Hernandez to start a business with her.

“To have her join me would be amazing and I think she would do great,” Wren said.”It would be just like old times, both being on the same team.”

When Wren first transferred to LBSU in 2017, Hernandez was a freshman. They both had a lot in common from the start, as both were outfielders and lefty hitters.

Wren always turned to Hernandez to get extra work after practices, and both helped each other improve. They became best friends.

“It was amazing having her by my side pushing me to be a better player. She was a loyal teammate and I was honored to be able to have shared the field with her,” Wren said.

Hernandez is keeping her options open after graduation with private softball lessons and working a full-time job. She currently works for a nonprofit organization called Higher Ground, an at-risk family development center where she works with kids.

Hernandez is adjusting and letting go of her career at The Beach but looks forward to staying in contact with the staff and team.

“I’m excited to see the new girls come in and take over, it’s definitely a bittersweet moment,” Hernandez said. “I wish them the best of luck in the years to come.”

Leaving behind an incredible stat board, after graduation her dream is to travel, get out into the world and see novel places.

“Even when she leaves and finishes her playing career at The Beach,” Fee said. “She will always have a stat board that is unbelievable.”
