New faculty hires signal that CSULB is moving forward The Beach is a hot place, especially for new tenure-track faculty members. According to Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs David Dowell, 34 tenure-track faculty were hired for the 2013-14 year at CSULB. A tenureur iew track faculty member is expected to teach and conduct research and scholarly activities, as well as provide service to the university and community, according to the Cal State University website. More than half of CSU classes offered in fall 2011 were taught by tenure-track faculty while lecturers taught 40.4 percent of the semester’s courses, according to the CSU website. Seven years ago, CSULB hired as many as 77 tenure-track faculty members. Since then, budget cuts have caused this number to drop considerably each year. In 2010-11, the university hired only nine tenure-track faculty. The number of tenure-track faculty hired this year is nowhere close to the 77 CSULB could hire years ago. Nevertheless, it’s a step forward. Given the tough budget woes and struggles that CSULB has endured over the last few years, we are glad to see that the university has the budget to hire 34 additional tenure-track faculty. Data from the CSU shows that tenure-track faculty members in 2011 earned nearly $25,000 more than lecturers. With the difference in salary paid, it’s clear that hiring tenure-track faculty costs more than hiring lecturers. Not to mention, the new hires will hopefully increase the diversity and breadth of the university’s teaching staff.

Given last year’s passage of Proposition 30 and the rising number of hired tenure-track faculty each year, it seems like CSULB is moving forward out of its past budget woes. We understand that the increased number of tenure-track faculty hires this year could be due to professor retirement and increased student enrollment. Regardless, though, we believe the new hires are a good sign for CSULB. In order for CSULB to thrive and offer the highest quality of education, investments in faculty members must be made.

Moving forward, it is important that CSULB and the CSU system continue to invest in both students and faculty. Keeping tuition rates low and hiring more tenure-track faculty members would show that the university is escaping its past budget woes. While the number of tenure-track faculty hired does not necessarily equate to a higher graduation rate or reduced class sizes, it’s still a start. We all know The Beach is a hot place for students. We’re glad it has now become a hot place for faculty too.
