Peacock or Impulse? Block 15 or McMenamins? American Dream or Woodstock’s? Lambda Chi or SAE? The Daily Barometer’s first ever Best Of campaign takes one step toward resolving these lasting campus debates. This January we collected hundreds of votes from Oregon State University students, faculty and staff about their favorite places in and around Corvallis – in over 40 categories including the Best Of campus, Best Of food, Best Of entertainment, the Best Of night life and the Best Of the rest. You vote with your time and money everyday, but now it’s official. The votes have been tallied, the winners notified, the prizes given away – so take a peak inside to see who won what. You may even learn something new about some of the winners. The Barometer marketing and sales teams have written some profiles to shine a spotlight on the Best Of winners who received the

most total votes in their categories. By voting, you gave some props to that Thai place where every waiter knows your name, a thanks to that bar that always hooks you up, and a nod to that Greek house deserving of some Best Of fame. The results are dramatic. There are some tear jerkers like Qdoba winning best Mexican restaurant, some “no duh’s” like Valley Library winning best place to study, and some “what the’s” like the five voters who asserted the best place to work out is “my bed.” While there was some heated competition (Best Sorority/Fraternity were close ones), our main goal for this campaign is to help the OSU community make the Best Of their time here. College is a special time. Classes, friends, lovers, work and wacky professors are all part of our experience here at OSU. But what about Corvallis? We created the Best Of for you to share what YOU think the Best Of our college town is. Thanks to all who voted, and congratulations to all of the winners!

Congratulations to the daily prize winners!

Fans like highlight reel plays, especially in basketball. That is why Blake Griffin is in more commercials than Tim Duncan – who is one of the best power forwards in the league but has a style of play that is the opposite of exciting. That is also why people watch the NBA dunk contest and go to see the Harlem Globetrotters. Jared Cunningham is easily the most electrifying player in the Pac-12 and his “Kiss the Sky” dunk that was awarded Dunk of Year last season by Hoops Manifesto might be the single most exciting play in Gill Coliseum history. Cunningham will definitely be competing in the dunk contest one day. He is not just a one-dimensional player who can only throw down though. Cunningham is a Pac-12 player of the year candi-

date and the conference leader in scoring and steals. Cunningham was not given this award by OSU sports writers though. This award came from the OSU general student body. Voters ranged everywhere from the most die-hard members of the Beaver Dam to the international exchange students who hardly follow popular American sports. To the average OSU fan, Cunningham and exciting plays go together like Tiger Woods and sex scandals and people who follow Beaver basketball closely know that Cunningham is a superathletic combo guard who has been working on his jump shot. After last year’s “Kiss the Sky” dunk and a few jaw-dropping slams this season, Cunningham has engrained his high flying, exciting style of play to Beaver fans of all levels of die-hardness. Without a doubt, Jared Cunningham is the single most recognizable athlete on this campus since Jacquizz Rodgers and will remain so for another year if he doesn’t enter the NBA draft.

American Dream – Best Pizza By Hilary Heino

THE DAILY BAROMETER

We thank you for voting us

#1 Property

Management Company in Corvallis!

PINION PROPERTY MANAGEMENT, INC.

You voted American Dream as the “Best Pizza,” so what sets their pizza apart from others around campus? According to the owner Scott McFarland, “Our dough is delicious and unique, our sauce and cheese are incredibly yummy, and we use lots of fresh ingredients.” He also went on to say that, “We provide a fun atmosphere with lots of music, art and attention to our customers.” American Dream’s first shop opened up in NE Portland, Oregon in 1985. McFarland, an Oregon State University graduate, met coowner Sabastian Mailinow while working at a restaurant. McFarland later moved to Corvallis and opened up the Campus Dream in 1989, then added the Downtown Dream in 2004. Justin Chi, an OSU student who has been going there for years said, “The atmosphere is always relaxed and fun, the pizza is great, and for people who drink, their selection of beers are great too.” Along with the pizza, the Campus Dream has

a great selection of beers. Their $4.95 slice and pint special is well-known among the busy and “thirsty” students looking for some quick eats between classes. Another unique aspect of American Dream is their customer created “paper plate art.” Anyone who walks in will notice the drawings plastered all over the walls. While this is very popular for kids, many artsy students join in the plate art. This tradition started in the original Portland shop; McFarland explained, “Occasionally, the budding artist types would ask for a pizza box to color. Some of these boxes were so amazing we started putting them up on the wall – inspiring more customers to color boxes. Eventually, we devoted an entire wall to the display of these colored pizza boxes.” The Campus Dream did not have enough room for pizza boxes, so they used paper plates instead, and the tradition continues on. The American Dream Pizza is a staple of Corvallis and thanks to your votes, has been marked as a favorite among the college crowd.

Contributing Writer from the Ad Sales Team Stephanie Mather, the owner of the Peacock Bar & Grill, gladly accepted her business’ three outstanding certificates last Monday. Peacock Bar & Grill is now known by Oregon State University students as the “Best Bar for Dancing,” “Best Place to be Single and Mingle,” and “Best Overall Bar in Town.” “Our atmosphere doesn’t discriminate against anyone,” said Mather. The Peacock doesn’t require people to dress up or dress down, although customers are welcome to if they so choose. The Peacock has been open since 1929. Mather took over the business in 2005, after previous owner, Tommy Connor passed away. Tommy took care of a lot of people in Corvallis, and Mather knew that. She stated that she didn’t want to change the name, so it’s still Tom’s Peacock Bar & Grill. Tradition is something Mather is striving to maintain at The Peacock. One way she has done so is by keeping the original shuffleboard in the bar. For those that know it, it’s pretty unique. “I like to go upstairs for dancing… it’s a fun environment to be in with your friends,” said Cole Austin, a senior in New Media Communications. Austin said he was at The Peacock a couple weeks ago just hanging out with his friends. Mather likes to keep consistency within Peacock. “The local residents expect a lot from us, and they should,” said Mather. “Corvallis depends on us to stay the same and still progress.” Staying open every day for dancing, pool, shuffleboard and karaoke all contribute to the steady fun The Peacock offers. Mather went on to say that The Peacock is not just an OSU bar, but a Corvallis bar.

The Best of The Rest

Best Movie Theater – Carmike Cinema By Melanie Hamilton THE DAILY BAROMETER

People are running around screaming, waiting, watching— all for one thing, the premier of the next big blockbuster. Most people at some point have experienced a midnight showing release, for films like “Harry Potter” or “Twilight”, even highly anticipated films such as “The Vow” could cause a lot of commotion in movie theaters. Carmike 12, voted best movie theater, is already preparing for the release of “The Hunger Games”, which has already sold out one theater room. Carmike Manager and staff leader, Tim Moss, who has worked at the theater for four years, says that big movie releases like “Harry Potter” or “Twilight” can get crazy. “We prepare by setting up in all 12 theaters, because we know that we’ll ASHLEY DONOHUE | Contributed Photo use pretty much all 12. ulus Tuesday’s are on average better and busier day than other weekdays,” Moss says. That seems true, as OSU students Daniel and Kayli Lebowitz usually attend Tuesday night showings. Daniel is a graduate student in math and Kayli is studying accounting at OSU. This week the Lebowitz’s came to see “Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds.” “We’ve only been to this theater since coming to Corvallis,” confessed Daniel. “We’re happy with it, we come once every two weeks, if something good’s playing,” Kayli added. Moss says while most customers are students, the theater does receive a wide variety of customers of all ages. “We have a lot of students that come in. We also have a lot of parents, pretty much everyone.” It’s clear that the winner of the Best Movie Theater is a great place to see your favorite films and enjoy a nice student discount for a day or night out in the town.

the 9 o’clock shows to get people out of the lobby. 1300 people is a lot to have in the lobby”. Staffers at Carmike can attest to the frenzied environment and claim that working behind the counter can be fun, when it’s busy. One staff member, Hannah Brausch is a junior at Oregon State University, studying Food Science, and has been working at Carmike for over a year and a half. Hannah says the best part of working at the theater is, “the free movies and popcorn, [plus] we can see about 1 to 2 movies a week for free.” That must be a nice perk when the theater gets great movies that keep OSU students coming back. Moss states, “ We hear that people prefer our theater, some people say our popcorn is better.” The theater also entices customers with student discounts and a special deal called the Tuesday Stimulus, which discounts movie tickets and concessions every Tuesday. “Due to the stim-

According to our voters, the best caffeine fix in Corvallis is served hot, blended or iced in a white cup fitted with a blue top. Yes, the three Corvallis-area Dutch Bros Coffee locations have most of us addicted to their coffee, mochas and lattes. Closest to campus — and most popular with students and faculty — is the 8-year-old Monroe Ave. location that OSU student Brendon Gilbert has worked at since 2008 and currently manages. When asked why he thought Dutch Bros earned best coffee spot in Corvallis, Gilbert replied that, “we have a great cup of coffee and people have a great

time when they come in here. This store is about community and everyone knows this is a place to come, gather and hang out and have fun.” Dutch Bros is also a favorite with OSU students due to the great promotions they offer, including stamp cards and drink discounts sent via text to “VIP Club” members. I chatted with OSU Crew Team member Gunther Klaus in line at Dutch Bros, and he credits the 16-ounce “Double Torture” drink for keeping him awake and cheering him up after 6 a.m. “Can’t beat Dutch Bros, I just hate when I lose my stamp card,” sighed Klaus while fumbling through his wallet. Don’t we all.

Dr. Kathy Greaves, or “Dr. Sex” as she’s known to her students and weekly readers, shows off a book on one of the more memorable subject matters of her class. When asked what the weirdest thing that has happened in her class was, Dr. Greaves said its actually the recognition she receives outside of Corvallis from former students that catches her off guard. From weddings in the Columbia Gorge to the terminals of McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Dr. Greaves says she runs into former students all the time. “If this only happened in Corvallis, it wouldn’t be all that weird. But it happens in random places… and it’s most weird when they shout SARAH GILLIHAN | Daily Barometer out, “Hey! Dr. Sex!” Congratulations on the two “Best Of” awards, A rare quiet moment in the usually busy Dutch Bros campus location at 2001 NW Monroe Ave. Dr. Sex!

Human Sex, Doing It Right After teaching at Oregon State for 17 years, Dr. Kathy Greaves is becoming a legend around campus. Not only is she the brains and beauty behind HDFS 240 – Human Sexuality, and the host of newspaper columns, cable-TV shows and workshops relating to sexual health; Dr. Greaves can now add that she is the winner of two “Best Of” awards to her resumé! Students voted Greaves as the “Best Professor“ and rated her Human Sexuality class as “The Best Class to Boost Your GPA.” Dr. Greaves said, “I think the two awards actually go hand-in-hand. If students like a course, its subject matter, and the teaching style of the professor, they are more likely to... get higher grades than students who don’t.” It also doesn’t hurt if the subject matter revolves around reaching orgasm and finding the G-spot. Those of us who have taken the baccalaureate core sex class know a few fun facts about the dirty deed that the rest of the student body likely doesn’t. If you know that a decent percentage of males who grew up on farms had their first sexual experience with farm animals, or that Dr. Greaves is reminded of female genitalia when she sees the Oregon State Athletics Department “OS” logo, then I’d guess that you’ve sat through a HDFS 240 lecture in Milam Auditorium before. Blaine Gallaway, junior communications major, agrees that Dr. Greaves and her human sexuality class are one of the best combos on campus; “she definitely deserves both of those awards, I loved that class.” When asked what his favorite memory from lecture was, Gallaway replied, “the animal sex book that we would see a page from at the end of each class. That and the blow up doll were hilarious.” Sophomore Kenny Ulrich shared that his favorite moment from lecture was when a man in a gorilla suit chased a man in a banana suit during “Porn Day” through Milam, and the gorilla jumped off the stage and tripped in the aisle during his run for the door. It should be noted that Ulrich was not registered in the class; he was just sitting in entertainment. Yep, it’s that good.
