PAC class yoga reaches the top Best Yoga Students voted the on-campus gym Dixon Recreation Center and the Physical Activity Courses (PAC) as the best places to practice yoga in Corvallis. Erika Hanselman Green, fitness coordinator for the department of recreational sports at Oregon State University, said that this is a result of the environment that Dixon has. She also said that one of the most important parts of having a good
environment is having highquality instructors. “I try to hire instructors that I feel will really connect well with the population here,” Green said. “Instructors that really want to help others in their yoga practice.” Green also pointed out that having a good space for yoga is crucial, and that Dixon’s dedicated space for yoga helps those who want to practice. In addition she said that the low price of coming to Dixon is a very significant
factor in its popularity. “I try to hire the best instructors but still keep our prices down,” Green said. “So we’ve taken away that barrier.” Tsipora Claudia Berman, PAC instructor at OSU, is no stranger to taking away barriers with yoga as she has had a career in yoga that spans three decades. She said that there is a large gravitation towards yoga for a laundry list of reasons. “They come because they
Kappa Alpha Theta selected as the best Best Sororities Oregon State University’s Greek system is home to 11 Panhellenic sororities plus one professional sorority as an associate member. Of these 12 sororities, Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta were voted in by students as the top three best sororities at OSU. The OSU chapter of Alpha Phi was chartered in the May of 1947 and holds three philanthropies a year: the Alpha Phifa soccer tournament in the fall, the Mr. Alpha Phi pageant in the winter, and the sorority’s biggest philanthropy, Red Dress Gala in the spring. All three philanthropies benefit the Alpha Phi Foundation, which donates money to research hospitals making strides in promoting women’s heart health. This year, the OSU chapter of Alpha Phi raised over $16,600 for the Alpha Phi Foundation at Red Dress Gala. Alpha Phi President Nissa Johnson stated that the members of the chapter work hard to make the chapter what it is. “I’m very proud of all of our members for all of the hard work they put into Alpha Phi and the Greek community in general,” Johnson said. fall term which benefits the Delta Gamma Foundation, Service for Sight and Aid to the Blind. Anchor Splash was one of three philanthropies that was voted in by students for the Best Philanthropy category. Grace Francis, the president of Delta Gamma, was unavailable for comment. OSU’s chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta, known as simply “Theta” by the OSU community, was chartered in 1917 and hosts its philanthropy, Ironbrawl, in the spring. The philanthropy benefits Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and features a 5K run/walk, a zumba class and a flag football tournament. This year, Ironbrawl raised around $26,000 for CASA, according to Kappa Alpha Theta President Katie Conway. Ironbrawl was also voted in as one of the three best philanthropies at OSU. “We pride ourselves on leading the community and being well-rounded women,” Conway said, “We’re really excited and honored to have that honor and recognition.” baro.news@oregonstate.edu

have nowhere else during their time here that is pure relaxation and totally for themselves,” Berman said. Berman said that a large number of students are athletes with injuries, who are trying to get their bodies back into workable shape. She also said that her classes are not limited to any one type of student. She said that students who are interested in practicing yoga should not be afraid of not having any experience.
“If they’re really shy and it’s just a very early beginning for them and they’ve heard about and they don’t know, then coming to a yoga one class is the best way to go,” Berman said. Green said that meeting first-time students is extremely exciting, and suggested that interested students come by a class. “Drop into a class and introduce yourself to the instructor,” Green said. “Their job as a yoga instructor is to
make them feel welcome.” Both Green and Berman are also constantly thinking about how to improve on their courses. Berman said that she constantly changes to fit the times, and that she is constantly learning. Green said that her focus is on the environment. “I think really it would be facility-based,” Green said. “I would create a studio that is a little bit more welcoming, a little bit more inclusive.” baro.news@oregonstate.edu
Delta Upsilon hits No. 1 Best Fraternities Oregon State University is home to a large Greek life community which consists 21 social fraternities. Four of those fraternities, Delta Chi, Delta Upsilon, Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon were voted in by students as the top four fraternities at OSU. The OSU chapter of the Delta Chi fraternity was first founded in 1926 and is known for being one of the first national fraternities to openly abolish hazing practices. Delta Chi’s philanthropy, I Spy Delta Chi takes place every spring term and benefits the V Foundation for Cancer Research. “Our house, we really work to better the community outside of Greek Life,” Delta Chi President Nicolas Kruger said. Delta Upsilon’s OSU chapter was chartered in 1922 and has a strong connection with the history of the university— Nobel Prize winning scientist and activist Linus Pauling was
an alumnus of the fraternity. The chapter’s philanthropy, DU Darling takes place every winter term and benefits the Global Service Initiative, which allows brothers to go to Jamaica to build and remodel schools or go Washington D.C. for other service learning opportunities. DU Darling was also voted in as one of the best philanthropies at OSU. “As a chapter, we’re super excited to hear that we’ve been given this honor. The chapter has been working really hard over the last four years to grow and strengthen relations with the Corvallis community,” Delta Upsilon’s President Devon Holler said, “We’re glad to see the work paying off and look forward to seeing more growth and development in the future.” The Alpha Lambda chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity joined the OSU Greek community in 1917 and has won awards from Lambda Chi Alpha nationals for superior chapter operations.
Lambda Chi Alpha’s philanthropy, Miss Watermelon Bash takes place every fall term and benefits Community Outreach Inc. (COI). Alec Dehnert, president of Lambda Chi Alpha, stated that the chapter is honored to be considered one of the top four fraternities. “It’s one of our goals to have a good image from the community outside looking in, and we want to say thank you to everyone who voted,” Dehnert said. The Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity’s OSU chapter was established in 1918 and was the first Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter in the state of Oregon, preceding the chartering of the University of Oregon chapter by 20 years. Sigma Phi Epsilon’s SigEp Sweetheart philanthropy takes place every winter term and also benefits COI. Last winter, the fraternity raised $21,000 for COI. baro.news@oregonstate.edu

Props to pizza Best Pizza Of all the pizza places in Corvallis, three have been voted to be superior than the rest. American Dream Pizza:Founded in 1989, this Monroe street pizza joint has been a staple for Oregon State students, faculty, and alumni to grab a quick slice for a good price. Dominos: This business also sits on Monroe street in Corvallis. Domino’s has one unique factor that separates them from the rest of the pack, they stay open on the weekends well into the night, keeping their doors open until 1:00 a.m. most nights, and 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Domino’s general manager Kendra Maggard said last year, they saw need with late night business, and that decision has had a positive effect on their business. “We saw the need to go for late night business, and it’s worked wonders for us,” Maggard said. “What makes us unique is that we are now able to get the late night boom, because we provide cheap, and quick pizza.” And the last finalist is Pizza Hut, who is the outlier in this group in terms of location, being on Kings Blvd near Winco. General Manager Samantha Johnson, noted that having coupons in the Student Survival Kit, helps them cater to the younger crowd, along with their speciality crust. “We always hope to cater to students with the coupons in the student survival kit,” Johnson said. “The most popular for students is the stuffed crust, it really seems like the younger crowd of students really prefer that pizza.” baro.news@oregonstate.edu

Which sandwich Best Sandwiches
John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was known not only for his gambling habits, but more famously for claiming to be the eponymous inventor of the sandwich. Even though John Montagu died in 1792, the growing popularity of the sandwich could not be stopped. Today, Corvallis is home to a large and diverse collection of sandwich shops that students and locals can enjoy. Jimmy John’s, located on Monroe Avenue, is a very widely known sandwich shop that has remained a staple of Corvallis for quite some time. Their employees can often be seen delivering food by bike throughout campus. One of the most popular sandwiches that Jimmy John’s has to offer is the number nine, better known as the Italian Night Club. Additionally, for the iconic “broke college student” Jimmy John’s offers 50 cent loafs of day old bread which are as tasty as they are cheap. Togo’s, located both in the Memorial Union and on 9th Street, are also well known and frequently hailed for their quality. Togo’s offers a wide variety of cold, hot, veggie and toasted sandwiches, as well as offering soups such as Broccoli Cheddar. Some of their most popular sandwiches involve pastrami, such as their number nine, the Signature Pastrami, and their number 10, the Pastrami Reuben. Togo’s is also well known for their ability to cater an event. Subway is one the most popular food chains in the world, as they have over 10,000 international restaurants. As it so happens, Corvallis has several Subway locations such as the one on Monroe Avenue and the one on 9th Street. Subway is famous for its pseudo “build your own sandwich” approach as well as multiple promotional phrases and market concepts such as “eat fresh” and the “$5 foot longs”. Popular sandwiches of Subway include the Italian B.M.T., the Meatball Marinara, and the new Thick Cut Carved Turkey. Baro.news@oregonstate.edu
Beef up on burgers Best Burgers
From food trucks to sit-down restaurants, Corvallis offers a variety of burger options. The top three nominated include Joe’s Burgers, Cheesy Stuffed Burgers and Block 15. Joe’s Burgers, located in the Memorial Union, offers customers not only a convenient location, but also a traditional menu with great value, according to Manager Diana Sather. “Joe’s food is produced according to the high standards that we in the Pacific Northwest have come to expect,” Sathers said. “ We use high quality ingredients including Cascade Natural beef for our burgers. Value is important to us so we keep our food affordable even while preparing everything hot and fresh to order.” Students craving a burger while exploring Corvallis’ nightlife can stop by Cheesy Stuffed Burgers, a food truck located on Monroe Avenue. Open from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and 7 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., Cheesy Stuffed Burgers offers their customers hamburgers stuffed with various cheeses, as well as cheese-smothered french fries. Dutch Bros, one of Corvallis’ most well-known coffee shops, has four locations in close proximity to the Oregon State University campus, including Monroe Boulevard, two drive-thru locations on 3rd and 9th streets and one location connected to the Beaver Store. According to Jessica Ortman, the manager of the Dutch Bros Monroe Boulevard location, the staff couldn’t do what they do without the support of their customers and are happy that they have continued to come in. Dutch Bros offers coffee beverages, Italian sodas, energy drinks and tea as well as pastries. The most popular drinks at Dutch Bros include rebels, frosts and drinks with white coffee, which has 70 percent more caffeine than black coffee, Ortman said. The Allann Bros. Beanery Cafe, another coffee shop that was voted one of the best coffee shops in Corvallis, has multiple locations in the Corvallis area including on Monroe Boulevard and a downtown location. The Monroe Boulevard location of the Beanery has been supplying OSU students and Corvallis community members with coffee, drinks and meals including paninis and burritos. “It’s great that we were voted one of the best and we appreciate it — that’s what we strive for,” said Amber Harsh, the area manager of the Monroe Boulevard Beanery. While the Beanery serves a variety of coffee beverages, tea and other drinks, the most popular drinks are the chai latte and the white chocolate mocha, Harsh said. Starbucks was also voted one of Corvallis’ best coffee shops and serves OSU students and Corvallis Community members from its multiple locations in the Corvallis area, including the stores downtown, on Kings Boulevard and at the Sunset Shopping Center.
Residents in the Corvallis area looking to get an extra morning boost can visit the top three breakfast restaurants— Shari’s Restaurant and Pies, The Broken Yolk Cafe and McDonalds. Shari’s Restaurant and Pies is located on 1117 NW 9th ST and is open 24 hours everyday of the week. Shari’s is well known for their cake shakes, pies and breakfast foods, according to General Manager Dan Grigsby. “We’ve been here for 15 or 20 years and one of the neatest things is the students that come in here and patronize our menu,” Grigsby said. “It is no secret that college students love breakfast, even late at night. Advisers ‘being a friend’ for students Best Advisers
Advisers at OSU are key to keeping students in line to graduate. They tell us where to go, how to get there, and what to do once we are there. Three advisers who students voted to the top are Nelson Sigrah, Gwenette Gaddis and Sarah Wood. Sigrah, who has been at OSU since November 2014, advises students in Public Health and Human Sciences (PHHS). “I will say there are continual moments, with different students, almost on a day-to-day basis where
I’m reminded why I’m grateful for what I get to do,” Sigrah said. “I just like the feel of campus, if that makes sense. When I close my eyes and picture the words ‘University Campus,’ this is the visual that shows up in my brain.” Also in PHHS, Gaddis has been here since 2015. Before that, she was living in Indiana for, working as an adviser there. “I work with an incredible group of advisors and other office staff who all share a passion for serving students,” Gaddis said. “I really love helping stu-
dents. Sometimes that’s just helping them choose classes and make a twoyear plan. But sometimes it’s more like ministering to their needs—being a shoulder to cry on, encouraging them, advising them about life situations, being a friend. Each student is unique, and I love that I can give students something more than just advice on what classes to take. “ Wood came to OSU in 2015 as well, and has worked as worked as an academic advisor for five years. “Academic advising is such a rewarding job, I really love it! I

love getting to work with students throughout their first year of college, which is such an exciting time in life,” Wood said. “When I see students achieve the things they have set out to do, especially when they’ve experienced challenges along the way, it makes me really proud! Knowing, or hoping, that some of the guidance, listening, or encouragement I’ve given to students has helped them or taught them something is such a great feeling, and reassures me that I am doing something right!”

‘Way of life’ for Joshua Lucas Best Photographer For sophomore and marketing and entrepreneurship major Joshua Lucas, photography is not only a hobby, but a way of life. “I strive every second I pick up a camera to capture the reality of life, no matter the situation,” Lucas said. “To capture meaning is very important to me, so I always work my hardest to photograph true moments and feelings. Lucas’s interest in photography originated from a choir trip he attended when he was 16 years old. “One of my friends handed me his camera and I just started shooting,” Lucas said. “Everyone loved the pictures I was taking, and I fell in love with it instantly. It was my first time holding a camera, but it became my life passion pretty quick.” Lucas’s love for photography flourished into his own business, J. Lucas Photography, offering wedding, portrait and event photography. Lucas’s business allows him document his clients’ memo-

ries, one of his passions. “Capturing people’s memories and beautiful parts of the world is one of my biggest interests,” Lucas said. “Although wedding photography is a lot of work, I love being able to document important events which only happen once.” Although Lucas enjoys event photography, his true passion lies in photographing the world. “Nature and humanity leaves me with many curiosities,” Lucas said. “The curiosity for secrets, hidden beauty and knowledge pushes me to travel and capture beautiful parts of the world.” More information on Lucas and offered services can be found on the J. Lucas Photography webpage. “People is not only a hobby or profession for me, but a way of life,” Lucas said. “To document my perspective on the world, I believe, will inspire others to learn and explore for themselves.”

Sacred Art Tattoo Parlor and High Priestess Piercing and Tattoos were voted two of the best tattoo parlors in Corvallis. In addition to being voted in for best tattoo parlor, High Priestess was voted in for best piercing studios. Both parlors are in close proximity to the Oregon State University campus. High Priestess is located on 23rd avenue and Monroe boulevard in a business complex,
sharing the building with Subway, Penguin Flowers, Shogun Bowl and Domino’s Pizza. High Priestess has been in Corvallis since the January of 2001 and has two piercing artists on staff along with four tattoo artists and three staff members who work the front counter. Located in the Cobblestone Square complex on Monroe boulevard, Sacred Art Tattoo Parlor and is one of the oldest tattoo parlors in
the state, according to owner and tattoo artist Joey Taylor. Sacred Art has been in Cobblestone Square since the August of 1995, long before tattoo laws were grandfathered into state legislature. Taylor commented that Sacred Art has been around for so long that it’s almost old enough to drink. “We’re just average guys doing good tattoos,” Taylor said. baro.news@oregonstate.edu

Best Billards
Students have the option to practice their billiard skills have both on campus and in the city of Corvallis, at the Memorial Union basement, McMenamin and The Peacock. The Memorial Union basement offers several games for students and the public to play, including billiards, and is the closest for students to travel to since it is on campus. It is open 8:00 to 10:00 Monday through Wednesday, and 9:00 to midnight Thursday through Saturday. The cost to play billiards is four dollars an hour but is prorated by the second, you truly get what you paid for. The MU houses six full sized tables, which are leveled and are
polished every week. They also take music requests, allowing students to choose the atmosphere. “Usually three to four tables are filled out, so you can always get a table. It’s great for hangouts,” said Torrey Rogness bartender at the MU. Located across the campus on Monroe Avenue, McMenamins is a close place for students to play billiards. They are typically open Sunday to Monday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Tuesday to Wednesday 11 a.m. to 12 a.m., and Thursday through saturday from 11 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.. Upon walking in you are introduced to a very artsy environment with paintings on
the walls as a fresh selection of music plays in the background. The cost to play billiards is five dollars per hour but is also prorated in favor of the customer. They have two full sized tables that are refelt and leveled every couple of months. “Depending on the night it is usually relaxed, people study here and hangout but it could sometimes get roudy,” said Mike Williams, a bartender at McMenamins. “We have a full bar and we make our own liquor, but if someone doesn’t want that we have the best selection of scotch and whisky,” Williams said. Although the food is a little pricey it is fresh and cooked to order, and the beef is locally
sourced.
The Peacock is a bar on 125 SW 2nd St. and is open 7 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. all week. Due to the consistent time it makes it easier to make plans. There are four tables which are leveled and refelt twice a year. The cost to play is 75 cents a game. For music there is karaoke and DJs upstairs 4 nights a week. “Day in, day out, this is the best bar in town. It’s really friendly and we get people from all walks of life,” said Shawn Kilger, one of the bar tenders. “And the food is pretty darn good.” baro.news@oregonstate.edu

Best Bars in corvallis Impulse, Clodfelter’s Public House, Downward Dog Pub and Grub and the Peacock Bar and Grill were all voted by students as four of the best bars in Corvallis. According to Daniel Lovato, the Director of Operations at Impulse in addition to Sancho’s and The Still nightclub in Albany, while Friday and Saturday nights are the busiest in terms of volume and sales at Impulse, the club has also been known to go up on Tuesday nights. Beer is sold more than any other alcoholic beverage, Lovato said, but vodkaRed Bulls and whiskey drinks are still a popular choice amongst the student clientele. Even though it can be competitive between the few bars in the Corvallis area, Lovato likes seeing new bars and clubs open for business and contribute
to Corvallis’ nightlife. “We have a good nightlife compared to other cities, I’d say. Corvallis is pretty happening,” Lovato said. Just a block away from Impulse, one can find Clodfelter’s Public House, more commonly known as Clod’s amongst OSU students and Corvallis community members, on Monroe boulevard. According to Ashley Ferns, a senior music major and server at Clod’s, Pint Nights and the twice-weekly happy hour are some of the more popular nights for students to visit the pub. “We’re really humbled by the students’ vote, we just like being here,” Ferns said Formerly known at the Red Fox, the Downward Dog Pub and Grub on Monroe boulevard, also made the list of Corvallis’ best bar. The two most popular drinks at Downward Dog, according to General
Manager Ryan Anderson are the rum punch and summer breeze. The rum punch features the bar’s peach-infused house rum and the summer breeze is described by Anderson as a “boozed-up strawberry lemonade.” Anderson believes that the success of Downward Dog comes from the support of the students. “It’s all about the students here as far as our success goes,” Anderson said, “We provide good drinks, good food and good prices, the rest is all them. Located in downtown Corvallis, the Peacock Bar and Grill was also voted as one of Corvallis’ best bars. The Peacock serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in addition to the bar service. The Peacock is also home to Western Wednesday and Thursday. The Peacock’s manager was not available for comment. baro.news@oregonstate.edu
