“You know, I played it cool but you actually did a really shitty thing,” the message read. “I wouldn’t have minded in the slightest if you’d been up front about your intentions, but you gave me every indication that it wasn’t going to be a one night stand. So that’s why I scowl at you whenever I see you. Tosser.” No, that wasn’t pulled from a heartbroken teen’s blog, nor was it a plot device taken from some movie about social networks. It’s one of just under 18,000 unsigned posts written for UC Berkeley’s spring 2010 AnonCon. Whether caused by melancholy or excitement, relief that it’s almost over or a sense of dread before that last final, the itch to get away from studying at the end of the semester inevitably gets the better of many students and AnonCon — short for Anonymous Confessions — stands ready to distract UC Berkeley’s population of future politicians, doctors and entrepreneurs from things they should be more worried about. It began in spring 2005 as a thread on the campus’s LiveJournal community. The rules for UC Berkeley’s first AnonCon were simple — post your confessions for the world to see, do it anonymously, be honest and be respectful if you reply to somebody else’s post — and sprung out of a suggestion made, fittingly, by an anonymous user. “I’m not really a Republican,” the first post stated. “I just don’t care very much about politics, so I support Bush to piss people off. If I lived in somewhere like Utah I’d be the biggest flaming liberal ever.” With that, a finals season tradition was born on campus. It stayed a part of the campus LiveJournal community until the spring of 2008, when it was canceled because of the negativity that the moderators said had turned the semesterly event into a “festering slime pool of suck,” according to the post canceling AnonCon that semester. But that did not mark its end. “A group of us wanting to keep the tradition alive moved AnonCon to its current ucb_anoncon community after the

ucberkeley community canceled it in 2008,” said a current AnonCon moderator and 2007 campus alum known in the community as “PLUMPKIN” , in a LiveJournal message. While AnonCon was first created as a forum in which students could confess their secrets, it has become another of the many ways students procrastinate during finals and vent their frustrations, according to PLUMPKIN. “The anonymous nature of AnonCon creates an environment where people can step outside of their boxes and post comments without fear of any repercussions,” they said in the message. “You could go as far and say that AnonCon is a microcosm of what would happen if we weren’t restrained by social norms.” Campus junior Gurjit Badhesha agreed, saying that while she doesn’t post on AnonCon, she reads it as a break from the constant reading and studying during finals. “I like when you have holes in your tights,” another spring 2010 message read, confessing a classroom crush like so many others do every semester. “I wish I had the courage to talk to you in class, you seem really cool.” “It’s really sweet,” Badhesha said. “I don’t really enjoy reading the malicious posts.” LiveJournal AnonCon threads exist on communities at UC San Diego and UCLA, according to PLUMPKIN. Others can be found by doing a quick Google search, and Oberlin College’s AnonCon served as an inspiration for UC Berkeley’s first. But UC Berkeley’s tradition seems larger and more vibrant than similar communities at other campuses, being constantly used since its creation. For the days it is active each semester, the rate of new posts is greater than on the campus’s LikeALittle page — a year-round forum for anonymous posting. “The primary reason AnonCon tends to be so busy is that it only happens twice a year during finals week,” PLUMPKIN said in the message. “Since AnonCon is around so briefly, people typically don’t get tired of it and hence look forward to it each semester.” Contact Nick Myers at nmyers@dailycal.org.

TOP 5 GAMES TO WATCH Jets vs. Patriots Dec. 6, 5:30 p.m. As entertaining as Jets coach Rex Ryan is in press conferences, the better show will take place on the Gillette Stadium turf. Tom Brady is arguably now the best quarterback in the NFL. Even without Randy Moss, perhaps the second best receiver in football history, he’s keyed an offense that’s been reminiscent of the Pats’ title runs. Both teams have 9-2 records, but the Jets are atop the AFC East with three division wins and no losses. If New England’s suspect defense can prevent another Mark Sanchez-led comeback, they’ll move up to tie in what will be a fantastic playoff preview. —Jack Wang

Memphis vs. Kansas Dec. 7, 4 p.m. There’s no Derrick Rose and no John Calipari, but this Madison Square Garden match-up between No. 14 Memphis and No. 4 Kansas should be one of the best this early in the college basketball slate. Recruiting prodigy Josh Pastner now helms the Tigers program and has built one of the deeper rosters in the country; nine players average at least 15 minutes per game and eight average at least eight points per game. Kansas, meanwhile, has national title hopes — even if freshman Josh Selby won’t play until Dec. 18. He was suspended nine games for receiving improper benefits. —Jack Wang

Cal vs. San Diego State Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m. Judging by the number of students present at Cal basketball games this season, chances are that you don’t have basketball tickets. But this is worth the trip to Haas Pavilion or the trip to your couch. San Diego State is the best team in California. UCLA is in a down year and even though Cal is the returning Pac-10 champion, it’s well known that they have lost pretty much everybody that scored the ball last season. Aztecs’ coach Steve Fisher is no stranger to success­­â€”Fisher led the famed “Fab Fiveâ€? Michigan teams in the early 1990s. This is a San Diego State team that is worth watching. —Gabriel Baumgaertner

Colts vs. Titans Dec. 9, 5:20 p.m. Let’s call it the battle of the underachievers. Both the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans were supposed to near the top of the AFC South, and while both might make the playoffs, they have certainly disappointed thus far. The Colts have hardly looked like Super Bowl runners-up, especially franchise quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning was picked off an eye-popping four times last week against the San Diego Chargers. The Titans have quarterback problems of their own, having benched starter Vince Young. This game is necessary for each team to get back on track. —Gabriel Baumgaertner

Warriors vs. Heat Dec. 10, 7:30 p.m. It’s not often that the Bay Area has one of the “hottest tickets in town.� That all changes Dec. 10, when the star-studded Miami Heat arrive at the Oracle Arena to take on the Golden State Warriors. Even non-sports fans were aware of “The Decision� when Lebron James opted to “take his talents to South Beach� and join forces with fellow superstars Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. Golden State, led by guards Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis, will look to add to the Heat’s early season woes. The Heat have already lost eight games and rumors of turmoil are burning, much like their nickname. —Gabriel Baumgaertner

Monterey waiting for my discharge to become final, I usually felt pretty ticked off that my unit was treating me like crap. Then I met a fellow who gave me a very sage piece of advice. “Adopt an attitude of apathy, man,� he said. “If you do that, then you can just go with the flow and all that other mess won’t bother you anymore.� He was right. My commanders still treated me like dirt, but instead of listening to them and getting mad, I ignored their every word and got happy. After all, I was already being discharged. Apathy. This means that at a predetermined time, I stop studying. I figure that if I don’t know it by that point, it won’t do much good to keep shoving in information I probably won’t retain anyway, while possibly negating some of the effective studying I previously accomplished. Cramming is stressful. It causes sleep deprivation and creates test-performance anxiety. Once again, this works against the test-taker. he first step to Triple-A is to determine your stopping point. To do this, you must first decide what time you want to wake up the following day. From there, count back at least six, preferably eight hours. This is your sleepy time. A rested brain will perform much more efficiently when it comes time for the test. From there, subtract another two hours. This is decompression time, which you should spend doing anything but studying. If you’re wound up tight from cramming it will be harder to fall asleep. Finally, when you’ve determined your stopping point, stick to it. Put down your pencil, close your book, turn off your computer, take a deep breath and say to yourself, out loud, regardless of any moral objections you might have, “Fuck it.� Then, simply walk away. It’s OK not to know everything. You don’t have to have a perfect score to get an A, or even just to pass. I’ve learned some very valuable things from making mistakes, and those lessons have a way of sticking. We are all here to learn, but if we don’t take a moment to relax, we may end up like the guy that sits on the concrete barriers at the entrance to Upper Sproul Plaza shouting conspiracy theory. True, it might not all be technically accurate, but the underrated and stellar cast makes up for any pseudo-science.

ZODIAC July 4, 1969. Three Dog Night’s “Easy To Be Hard” blares as fireworks illuminate the Bay Area night sky, followed by a shot through a nondescript suburban neighborhood. As the radio segues into Donovan’s “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” a murder takes place in gruesome fashion. With this unsettling introduction, David Fincher turns the thriller genre on its head, elevating it into a compulsively watchable dissertation on the obsessions of a bygone era. As reporters and detectives become hopelessly consumed by the mystery of the titular serial killer, their quest for closure feels infectious. With layers upon layers of facts, subtext and period details, “Zodiac” offers a tremendously rewarding mind exercise for any occasion. Its open-ended nature speaks to real life, encouraging viewers to digest, analyze and synthesize information while rejecting the essence of certainty. —David Liu

I won’t spend this short space explaining how “The Wire” is better than most novels. If you want to read about that, just Google it. The reason “The Wire” is a fantastic study aid is simple: It makes you question the world and your place in it. If UC Berkeley has an unofficial motto, it’s “question everything and think intensely about social issues until your old friends don’t want to know you anymore.” And that’s what “The Wire” is all about. Through the lives of policemen and the drug dealers they pursue, the show explores the dirty American underbelly that defines so much of the urban experience. But unlike many unsophisticated cop dramas, “The Wire” is one elegant argument that the law and morality aren’t the same thing and that black and white almost never exist. “Thank You for Smoking” provides a useful study of persuasion. Its masterful protagonist Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) works as a cigarette-peddling spin doctor who exhibits the most amusing effects of what argumentation has to offer. For the multitudes facing down exams that likely involve essays, “Thank You for Smoking” takes viewers through how a seemingly impossible case can be made when people break out truly persuasive arguments. Brush up on your rhetorical terms and their uses: the film’s numerous monologues contain appeals to ethos, logos and pathos and ad hominem attacks to name a few. If you can deconstruct Nick Naylor’s sparkling logic, who’s to say that analyzing Freud or Nietzsche will be any harder? It’s consistently laughout-loud hilarious, infinitely quotable and infectiously addictive. And that’s why it must be experienced in non-stop, staring-at-thescreen-until-you-see-black-spots fashion. I went through the first three seasons of “30 Rock” in about a week, pausing only when absolutely necessary (napping, working on night cheese, etc). The lost productivity was never regained, but it was worth it. In a world of forgettable popular culture, “30 Rock” is full of vivid characters, clever plotlines and fantastic name-drops (“Mad Men,” anyone?). For all the naysayers who claim TV melts your brain, it's a show that makes you feel good about the tube again. —Katie Dowd

Whenever someone asks me to list my favorite films of the last decade, I brace myself for a look of utter confusion when I get around to “Ali.” As it stands, Michael Mann’s biopic of the boxing icon may be one of the most underappreciated films of our time. Why? For the life of me, I can’t figure it out. From Will Smith’s inspired turn out of an equally superb ensemble cast to the painstakingly detailed recreations of Ali’s iconic fights, there’s at least enough to merit a cursory appreciation. I’d be remiss not to mention the jaw-dropping opening scene, among the strongest sustained 10 minutes to emerge from any American film. Sam Cooke invigorates, Malcolm X enlightens, childhood memories recur, Ali trains in pensive silence — all in one virtuosic smorgasbord of sight and sound. Don’t feel like hitting the books? AMC’s latest hit, “The Walking Dead,” written by Frank Darabont, showcases phenomenal cinematography other television shows often sacrifice due to time constraints. Set in the dead heat of summer in an apocalyptic Georgia, the show is a fresh and invigorating take on the zombie genre. But it’s slow. And when I say slow, I don’t mean “Heroes”-ish drawn-out drama queen conversations slow. The director of photography really likes to take his time setting the scene and mood —­with a lot of dramatic nature shots and scenes filled with long stares, making it perfect for you to squeeze in a few practice problems before the next batch of the undead come to attack our weary heroes. There’s no better film to play in the background during a marathon study session than “The New World.” This isn’t to say that Terrence Malick’s Emersonian meditation on the Jamestown settlement story gravitates toward the soporific; in fact, it’s the film’s very lack of pulse-pounding action that makes it one of cinema’s most cathartic experiences. Characters speak in hushed tones and uncharted realms unfold in shades of green and gray, projecting a soul-cleansing splendor perfect for burning the midnight oil. “The New World” skillfully balances philosophical depth with visual and aural opulence. From the use of Richard Wagner’s “Rheingold Prelude” in the rapturous opening and closing sequences to the allure of primeval Algonquin abodes and Jacobean era London, Malick’s fascination with recreating lost worlds takes on poignant, timeless dimensions. —David Liu

The fantastic soundtrack showcases the ingenious collaboration between Elton John and Tim Rice with track titles that eerily speak to frantic college students. Facing a seemingly impossible O-chem exam next week? “Be Prepared.” Still don’t feel ready for Filippenko’s final? “Hakuna Matata.” Want to play the martyr? “Nobody Knows The Trouble I’ve Seen.” Furthermore, “The Lion King,” as a childhood favorite for our generation, is not a film to which you have to devote your full attention. Unless you have not watched movies since 1994 and also remain ignorant to the plot of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” you will be able to feel like you’re not missing out while you make your flashcards. —Leslie Toy

She and other students, finding coffee and energy drinks to be inadequate study aids, instead turn to so-called “study drugs” in order to maximize their capabilities. Despite the popularity of the drugs, they are not without dangers, according to Richard Scheffler, distinguished professor of health economics and public policy in the UC Berkeley School of

Morrison Library is the softly-lit, softly-furnished, perfectly scented, chock-full-of-books library of every bibliophile’s dreams — and two-thirds of the room’s occupants often seem to be dreaming. Students lay curled on couches and huddled into fetal positions in armchairs, napping in nearly every nook and cranny. There are studious folks too, to be sure, but many of its patrons can be found catching up on much-needed sleep. Recently, however, library officials have begun cracking down on nappers.

The sign warning students not to use laptops or eat in the library has sent an additional message since July: “No Sleeping. Student workers are encouraged to rouse sleepers from their slumber and inform them that Morrison is a space for studying, not slumber.” “It’s never been part of the philosophy of the Morrison Library that people should come there to sleep ... but it’s become sort of a myth on campus,” said Elizabeth Dupuis, director of Doe and Moffitt Libraries. As more and more students come expressly to sleep, slipping off their shoes, tossing their jackets over their heads and dozing off, library administrators

are concerned that the room’s unique ambiance is being ignored. “It seems kind of silly for people to go in that room to sleep and not to enjoy the presence of the room,” said Scott Peterson, the head of Morrison Library. He adds it’s a matter of limited resources. Peterson says he received a handful of complaints from students who have been unable to find room in the library to study or have been disturbed by snoring. During a routine check of the library, Peterson was disturbed by the fact that students are “falling asleep for hours on end,” which he deems excessive.

One of the biggest tests of finals week will be whether the new Reading, Review and Recitation week, implemented in fall 2009, will prove the principle that student grades benefit from a whole week of unscheduled time devoted to reading and reviewing their course material. While many students said the extra days of study time with optional review sessions — referred to colloquially as RRR week or “dead week” — is helpful if used wisely, professors were unsure whether grades have changed significantly due to the increased study time. “A lot of people won’t study and they’ll party and stuff,” said freshman and intended English major Spandan Bandyopadhyay, who said he has not really studied throughout the semester. “But I will because I am really worried about these exams.” However, junior Grace Boone, a double major in integrated biology and South and Southeast Asian studies, said that even though she needs to use RRR week effectively, in years past she has “still ended up cramming” during the second part of dead week. Though the Academic Senate issued guidelines in 1984 and 1991 stipulating that professors were never supposed to present new material on the 15th week of instruction, RRR week is supposed to also “serve as a time of active engagement between instructors and students for consultations, reviews, and feedback,” according to the Office of the Registrar website.

Boone said many of her teachers are offering review sessions and that these will be the part of dead week she is “counting on” to do well in her classes. Biology professor Gary Firestone said his review sessions have been very well-attended, usually drawing 300 or 400 students out of over 600 total in the class. Firestone also said that questions he has received in such review sessions — as well in e-mails, which he encourages students to send up until the final exam — seem much more thoughtful than in years before dead week. He said grades on final exams have not differed substantially from years past. He said this might be due to the objective nature of biology, which prevents grades from reflecting the amount of thought put into the answer. Even if grades are not directly affected, students are more likely to remember the information in the long term if they study over a longer period of time. In an educational study on retention, those who condensed a 30-minute lesson into one period remembered the information just as well the next day as those who spread the lesson over three days, but the second group retained the information 35 percent better four days later. Junior Aaron Murphy, an English major who transferred this year from UC Santa Barbara, where there was no dead week, said he had high expectations. “I always found myself wanting a few extra days to just look over the material,” he said. “Especially in classes where you cover a lot, such as language classes.” Contact Samantha Strimling at sstrimling@dailycal.org.

Several professors stressed the importance of practicing writing in timed settings extensively if your final entails essay-writing. “In a literature class, you probably will face essay exams. A good essay will state its point clearly and substantiate it efficiently; at least one slam-dunk smart point will usually close the deal. “So practice writing them: buy a couple of blue books, formulate a question (if the professor has given you study questions, use one of those), and time yourself while you write your essay in the time you will have. This will get the ideas flowing, and give you practice producing and organizing ideas quickly.”

The way that it (helps) is that it accesses stuff you almost know but don’t realize that you know. Then close the book, sit somewhere you won’t be disturbed or distracted, and work through those problems. “If you have study partners, exchange your ‘finals’ and grade them. (You’ll learn a lot just by trying to evaluate someone else’s solution critically.) “Remember, too, math is, in many ways, like athletics, you have to both practice the fundamentals and play the game (i.e., solve problems) if you are going to get good at it.”

Molecular & Cell Biology “Subdivide a given lecture into three or four key topics and then try to write a question or two that you think might be appropriate for that particular section ­­— see what types of questions you can come up with — that way, you are integrating the information rather than just memorizing factoids from a lecture. “That’s how I studied in college: I’d look over a given lecture, but that gets a little tedious, so I’d begin writing questions as if I was giving the exam. “Another tip: before you start studying, look at some of the general topics presented and try to write down concepts you remember from the lecture. “Writing concepts down is extremely important in learning and understanding material — place it in (your) own words, write down what you think are the key points, study, write again, see how much more in depth you can go. If you see a difference then you know you’re really starting to understand.”
