Enjoy golfing, hiking, biking, and other outdoor sports throughout the spring, summer and autumn. There is water skiing, boating and fishing on Beaver Dam Lake, Wisconsin’s 16th largest lake with 6,542 square acres.
Beaver Dam Raceway provides racing enthusiasts with exciting dirt track racing action that includes sprint cars, midgets, late models and more. Racing is held every Saturday, May through October, beginning at 6:30 PM.
Dodge County Fair Every August
The Dodge County Fairgrounds, just east of Beaver Dam, is home to the Dodge County Fair which is held the third week of August. Free water ski shows provided by the Beaverland MustSkis ski team, who perform just off Tahoe Park on Beaver Dam Lake from the Monday of Memorial Day weekend to the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. History of Dodge County More than 10,000 years ago, small bands of people entered what is now Dodge County on the edge of the receding glacier. As hunters and gatherers, early native Americans followed and hunted herds of large animals and gathered food stuffs. The river systems from the south were used by early inhabitants to reach the wildlife and other resources the county provided in abundance. Numerous sites within the county show evidence of the early inhabitants including stone tools, campsites and settlements, burial and effigy mounds, garden plots and paintings and carvings on rock outcrops and stones. The first white settlers were drawn for reasons of bountiful agricultural lands, with wheat, corn, oats, potatoes and apples being the primary crops. Wheat growing was later replaced with dairying. Before mass settlement and agricultural pursuits, Dodge County was covered mainly with forests, wetlands, prairie and oak savannas. Dodge County was created in 1836 and named in honor of Henry Dodge, then terr ritorial governor of Wisconsin. The Town of Victory was chosen as the County Seat. The Town of Victory was later renamed City of Juneau after Paul Juneau, the son of Solomon Juneau, founder of Milwaukee. In 1845 iron ore was discovered in Mayville and an iron ore works operated here for several decades until competition from mines in the Lake Superior region closed them. Sawmills and gristmills were widely distributed over Dodge County in the 1870's. In 1875, John Jossie, came from Switzerland, developed the variety of cheese known as “Brick”, and opened the first factory in the United States to produce brick cheese. The factory operated in Watertown until 1943. Dodge is a leading county in the production of cheese, barley, alfalfa, hay and peas for canning. Industries include the manufacture of wood products, shoes, metal products, lawn care equipment, magazines, stainless steel equipment and ice fishing equipment.

The BDACT building, formerly the First Baptist Church, provides an ideal intimate theater with excellent acoustics and two floors of work, storage, and performance space. In recent years, to accommodate our increasingly larger audiences, we present our summer musicals at the state-of-the art Beaver Dam High School auditorium.
The Schauer Center is the Kettle Moraine’s regional center for the arts—staging professional touring performances through its Performing Arts Series as well as performances by schools and its resident groups. The Schauer Center also offers classes in the visual and performing arts for all ages.
The Seippel Homestead and Center for the Arts, managed by the Beaver Dam Area Arts Association, features six exhibits each year, including a wildlife and landscape exhibit, an area high school art exhibit, a Holiday Gift Gallery, and several other major exhibits of national, state and area artists’ works. The BDAAA offers a year-round gift shop, classes, clubs, and special programs and events.

Downtown Beaver Dam THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY

ome and spend time in Beaver Dam’s downtown district. An exciting year has been planned for the downtown Beaver Dam River Market. The 2013 River Market will include 6 events running from the second Saturday in May through the second Saturday in October. It is held near the foot bridge in Tower Parking Lot off of Center St. and will include both shopping and entertainment. Taste of Wisconsin has become an annual event in Beaver Dam. It will be held Downtown on Saturday, June 15. Taste of Wisconsin is a Wisconsin Craft Beer and Cheese Tasting Event. Taste over 100 Wisconsin made beers, and dozens of Wisconsin made cheeses, promoting our proud heritage in the brewing and cheese making industries. Ticket price includes a Tasting Brochure and a souvenir tasting glass. Live music will also be provided by the Bob and Rich Show.

Fox Lake The City of Fox Lake is located on the southeast shore of the lake where city park land, with a boat landing provides recreational access. A town park with a boat landing provides access on the north side of the lake. Fox Lake is heavily used for boating, water skiing, and fishing. Fox Lake drains toward Beaver Dam Lake via Mill Creek. Lake Size: 2,625 Acres Maximum Depth: 22 Ft.

Sinissippi Lake
Beaver Dam Lake is the largest lake in Dodge County and the 16th largest in Wisconsin. The City of Beaver Dam is located on the southeast shore. Beaver Dam Lake covers approximately 6,600 acres, is 14 miles long, and has over 41 miles of shoreline. It is especially well suited for speedboating, sailing and provides excellent summer and winter fishing for northern pike, walleye, bass, catfish, bullhead, and a variety of panfish. Besides fishing, the lake is perfect for water-skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating and hunting. The city maintains a half a dozen lakeside parks, among which there are several with fishing piers and boat ramps. Picnic facilities for the general public are plentiful, as well as shoreline areas to enjoy the beauty of the changing seasons. Tahoe Park on Beaver Dam Lake is home to Beaver Dam's Lake Days celebration and the Beaverland Must-Ski's Water Show.
Sinissippi Lake is a haven for wildlife. The fisheries consist of northern pike, walleye, catfish and carp. A variety of waterfowl are either residents or visitors to the lake every year. American white pelicans, sandhill cranes, blue herons, Canada geese, eagles and others provide great opportunities for bird watching. Each season brings new activities and opportunities. The Lake Sinissippi Ski Club offers “Learn to Ski” programs every summer. The LSA 4th of July Lakefest and the Venetian Nite lighted boat parade in August highlight the summer events. Water skiing, swimming, wave runners, pontooning, kayaking, and canoeing are activities enjoyed all summer long. There are many places to explore with nine islands, backwaters and feeder creeks. Winter brings ice racing, snowmobiling & skiing to the snow covered ice. Lake Sinissippi is a wildlife haven with easy access for all boaters.

Beaver Dam Lake
Lake Emily is a shallow, fertile lake located in the extreme northwest corner of Dodge County. The lake provides a quality fishery primarily of perch, bluegills, largemouth bass, and northern pike and receives heavy usage year round. Much of the lakeshore is developed with cottages and homes, except for the west side which is still undeveloped. A town-owned boat landing provides good fishing and boating access on the southern end of the lake. Lake Size: 268 Acres Maximum Depth: 17 Ft.
Lost Lake Lost Lake is located in west-central Dodge County. The lake is popular for fishing and hunting although freeze out conditions limit the fishery. Much of the shoreline consists of marshy areas. Boat ramps exist on the north and south sides of the lake as extensions of the town roads. Lake Size: 245 Acres Maximum Depth: 11 Ft.

On the Trails Wild Goose State Trail Wild Goose State Trail links the City of Juneau - "Gateway to the Wild Goose Trail" and the City of Fond du Lac. This 34 mile compacted limestone trail on an abandoned railroad grade traverses oak woodlots, fertile farm fields, prairie remnants and sparkling streams as it runs through the rural country sides of Dodge and Fond du Lac Counties and skirts the western edge of the internationally known Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife, scenery and level surface provide safe, easy and enjoyable biking and hiking for all ages. Parking and trail access available at the southern trail head at Hwy 60 and the northern trail head on Rolling Meadows Drive in Fond du Lac and numerous points between. County and private campgrounds located nearby. A separate horse trail tread runs from Hwy 60. The trail can be opened for snowmobile and ATV use in winter.

The glaciers that once covered Dodge County have sculpted a landscape ideal for auto touring. Several scenic overlooks around the Horicon Marsh allow you to view the wetland’s wildlife. Follow the brown signs that mark the route of the Horicon Marsh Parkway, a 50-mile auto tour that encircles the Horicon Marsh and follows state and county highways through Burnett, Kekoskee, Horicon, Mayville and Waupun. The Parkway is easily accessible from U.S. Highway 151 or State Highway 41 by following State Highway 33 to access the south end of the Parkway or Highway 49 to access the north end of the Parkway.

Snowmobile enthusiasts will find an interconnected system of more than 320 miles of groomed county snowmobile trails that traverse farm fields, woodlots, lowlands and the Wild Goose State Trail, with another 180 miles of unfunded “club-owned” trails available for use within the County. Trails provide easy access to trail systems in neighboring counties. The “clubowned” trails tend to serve more of the local users often connecting the county trails and populated areas that provide food, service and overnight facilities.

Dodge County opens 20 miles of ATV trails from December 1 through March 31. Riding is only permitted during that time when the County has officially declared the trail open. The ATV trail can be opened if there is sufficient ground freeze or snowbase to prevent damage to the trail surface. The trails are primarily located on the surfaced areas of Wild Goose State Trail and the designated ATV trail routes through Burnett and East Waupun. The ATV trail runs from the parking lot at Hwy. 60 north to Hwy. 49.
The gentle current you’ll find on the Rock and Crawfish rivers make them ideal for paddling. One of the most popular launches is Harnischfeger Park on the Rock River. Paddlers can travel upstream for 17 miles to Hustisford or downstream 25 miles to Watertown. Astico Park is a favorite launching point for paddling excursions on the scenic Crawfish River.

During the last Ice Age, which ended about 10,000 years ago, a massive ice sheet covered the entire county. The county’s topography was shaped by the advance and retreat of this ice mass. Glacial debris was deposited as ground moraine and other glacial formations, varying in thickness throughout the county from 100 to 300 feet in depth. There is approximately 400 feet of elevation change with the highest points reaching 1,200 feet above sea level in the northeast, to 800 feet above sea level in the southwestern portions of the county. The two most prominent topographic features in the county include the very flat, marsh areas, such as the Horicon Marsh, and the Niagara Escarpment, which rises 190 feet in some areas.

Volksfest Stumpf Fiddle Contest

he Truck n Show is one of the nation's largest truck shows and includes a magniďŹ cent display of lights during the Friday night, Lights of the Night convoy.
Volksfest takes place in September and is the place to be if you enjoy polka, good food, beer and fun people. With free admission and nonstop music, Volksfest is the place to be. OUR RICH HERITAGE The Octagon House Museum and the First Kindergarten in the U.S. are open to visitors from May through October with guided tours daily on the hour from 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Don’t miss the Octagon House Ice Cream Social with 1st Brigade Band Concert held every August. St. Peter’s Christmas Cookie and Craft Sale THE BIGGEST (AND BEST) CHRISTMAS COOKIE SALE IN THE STATE!

t. Peter's Lutheran Church, located at the corner of Hwy MM and Hwy R (formerly 109), in Lebanon (NE of Watertown), will be holding its annual Christmas Cookie and Craft Sale on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 8 am to 3 pm and also on Sunday, Dec. 8 from 9 am to 1 pm. Over 130 varieties of cookies and candies will be available for sale by the pound. Last year 3000 pounds of cookies were sold. A ton and a half! That translates to over 40,000 cookies and candies. Shoppers walk past the variety and select their favorites. All of the cookies and candies are baked and decorated in the church's kitchen. Decorated cutouts, gingerbread men, turtle bars, snickerdoodles, Andes Mint cookies, fudge, almond bark, nut clusters, rum balls, cranberry hootycreeks, Scotch shortbread, and buckeyes are just a few of the varieties that will be available for sale. Also available will be fresh cinnamon rolls, Kranz Kuchen, sandwiches, and baked potatoes with toppings. Soups are our specialty. Over a dozen kinds of soup are made each day; sample some on the day of the sale and take quarts home for later. Horicon Marsh Area EXPERIENCE IT Get outdoors this year and experience the wildlife and many seasons of natural beauty at Horicon Marsh.
Fall
marks the return of mallard ducks, coots, herons, egrets, sandhill cranes, purple martins, warblers, and numerous others. A “chorus” of frogs is sure to be heard throughout the marsh signaling that warmer weather is here. The Horicon Marsh Bird Festival is held annually in May and offers many opportunities to view and photograph spring migrants and resident wildlife.
is well known for the mass migration of birds (and visitors!) to the marsh - Canada geese, as well as thousands of ducks of many different species – mallards, wood ducks, pintails, wigeon, redheads, bufflehead, and ruddy ducks; as well as impressive numbers of staging sandhill cranes. Opportunities also exist to view whooping cranes. Although closed for waterfowl hunting, the marsh is open for deer and small game hunting seasons in the fall, however there is waterfowl hunting in the State Wildlife area. Many educational programs and events are held marsh-wide throughout the season.

The Horicon Marsh Parkway is a 50-mile auto tour route that follows state and county roadways around the marsh, passing through or near many local communities. There are also roads, hiking and biking trails throughout the property, and a canoe trail accessing the waters of the marsh.
Spring
brings nesting season and warmer weather for hiking and bicycling around the marsh to view an array of species with their young. American white pelicans nest abundantly on the marsh during the summer and may be seen feeding in large groups – “herding” fish into shallower water for easier dining. Several fishing piers are also available at the marsh and make great places to spend relaxing summer afternoons.

Eagles, owls, several species of hawks, muskrats, foxes and other wildlife, or evidence of, such as tracks or feathers, may be sighted when the entire marsh is open to snowshoeing, hiking, and cross country skiing (Dec. 1- Mar 15). Fox Lake ONE OF WISCONSIN’S “BEST KEPT SECRETS”
F
ox Lake is a great escape from your hectic day-to-day life. It has two great lakes for all of your waterfront needs. There is an 18 hole golf course which resides along the lake, an aquatic center, snowmobile trails, several local restaurants and much more. Knowledge of the history and archaeology of Fox Lake was enriched in 1983 when the Fox Lake Inland Lake Rehabilitation and Protection District installed a sewer system. Workers uncovered one of Wisconsin’s largest archaeological discoveries on Elmwood Island in Fox Lake. The details of the dig and artifacts were painstakingly catalogued and preserved. The Fox Lake Historical Museum, in the old train depot, displays the findings from the archaeological dig as well as other local history.

Visit Horicon Marsh HORICON MARSH IS THE LARGEST FRESHWATER CATTAIL MARSH IN THE CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES WITH OVER 33,000 ACRES OF WETLAND.

et outdoors and experience the wildlife and many seasons of natural beauty at Horicon Marsh. The marsh provides habitat for endangered species and is a critical rest stop for thousands of migrating ducks and Canada geese. Because of its importance to wildlife, Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations, is a “Globally Important Bird Area” and is a unit of the Ice Age Scientific Reserve. It has also been designated as one the “Seven Natural Wonders of Wisconsin” and is often referred to as the “Little Everglades of the North.” Located in southeast Wisconsin,
this vast wetland is only a one hour drive from Milwaukee and Madison. While the marsh in renowned for its migrant flocks of Canada geese, it is also home to more than 300 resident and migratory bird species which have been sighted over the years. Due to its international significance, scientists from around the world have traveled here for professional training to improve conservation programs in their own countries The Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area comprises 11,000 acres of the marsh while the northern 22,000 acres is part of the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. The National Wildlife Refuge was established as a breeding
habitat for the redheaded duck. Besides the over 300 bird species, other wildlife that live on the marsh are muskrats, red foxes, coyotes, turtles, frogs, bats, fish, deer, beaver, raccoons, river otters, rabbits and much more. New to the marsh is the release of whooping cranes. These were reintroduced in 2011. The chicks were trained by a crane-costumed biologist and left to freely migrate on their own. They returned to the refuge in 2012 and also utilized other local wetlands. Within the marsh there are hiking and bicycling trails, driving trails, a floating boardwalk, fishing piers, boat launches and canoe/kayak trails. Geocaching is enjoyed on the southern end of the marsh. Of course birding, photography, hiking, hunting, site seeing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and fishing are popular activities on the marsh as well. Horicon Marsh has a unique and important story to tell. The geologic features of the area, created by our last ice age, were instrumental in providing resources for wildlife and humans alike. The human history of Horicon marsh is rich with culture and story; however it is one of tragedy and restoration. The wildlife present today at Horicon Marsh are the result of geologic and human activities, including modern-day wildlife management. To view a
movie about the history of the marsh, visitors can visit Horicon Marsh International Education Center on Hwy 28 between Mayville and Horicon. Public naturalist talks and hikes are given at both Horicon Marsh International Education Center and Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center throughout the year and are free and open to the public. These talks focus on a variety of topics related to the geology, history, wildlife and management of Horicon Marsh. It helps the visitor understand the delicate natural relationship that exists at the 33,000 acre marsh. Visitors should stop at Horicon Marsh International Education Center (HMIEC) or Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Office and Visitor Center for maps and information about the marsh. HMIEC also has other area visitor information and maps available. There are various restrictions on certain areas of the marsh so visitors should stop for information at one of the visitor centers.

HORICON MARSH PUBLIC USE AREAS N Horicon "TernPike" Auto Tour and Hiking Trails - Located on State Highway 49, just east of the city of Waupun. Open daily yearround, conditions permitting. Paved driving route (3 miles) and three hiking trails along with a floating boardwalk and bicycling and hiking access to the Wild Goose State Trail. Closed to hunting except during the deer gun season (Nov 19-27) as well as the Dec antlerless gun hunt (Dec 8-11) - auto tour route is closed to vehicles during this timeframe and hikers are required to wear blaze orange. N Highway 49 Wildlife Viewing Area a - Located on State Highway 49 just west of County Road Z. Open daily year-round. Hiking trail (1/4 mile) with observation area. Closed to all hunting.

Horicon Marsh International Education Center serves as both a destination and gateway for visitors to Horicon Marsh as well as providing for year-round education opportunities. More than 500,000 people visit the marsh annually to observe wildlife in a natural setting, creating a huge demand for interpretive services.
