Murder plea nets life sentence BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Eighteen-year-old Brooklyn Traylor has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the murder of convenience store clerk Kris Ledlow. Traylor pleaded guilty to the charges of first degree murder and attempted robbery in Alcorn County

Circuit Court on Friday afternoon. Judge Paul Funderburk handed down the sentence that included life with the possibility of parole at age 60 and a $10,000 fine for the murder charge. He must also serve a concurrent, day-for-day 40 year sentence and pay a $1,000 fine for the attempted robbery charge. Traylor and co-defendant Micah

Bostic allegedly attempted to rob the MAPCO Express gas station on Highway 72 on Feb. 1, 2016. Bostic has pleaded not guilty and his next hearing is set for July 24. According to court documents, Corinth police responded to the store at 5:39 a.m. for a panic alarm. Upon arrival officers found Ledlow laying on the floor behind the cash register.

She was unresponsive and later died at Magnolia Regional Health Center. Ledlow was shot nine times, including once in the back. Surveillance video showed two black males come into the store at 5:38 a.m. The suspect, Traylor, had a pink 9 mm handgun and dePlease see PLEA | 3

Visitors to Shiloh National Military Park can also have access to many things Corinth has to offer — all at the tap of a touchscreen. The Shiloh Battle App has been launched as the 16th title in the Civil War Trust’s series of Battle App guides. The series of apps are GPS-enabled multimedia tours that help visitors explore battlefields with onboard historian videos and other resources. Most Crossroads area residents will find points of interest in their own backyard as it covers a wide variety of Corinth historical sites and points of interest such as the historic Duncan House, the Oak Home, Fish Pond House and

What best describes Corinth as a travel destination? What would make Corinth a more appealing travel destination? It’s two questions tourism officials want locals to answer in a online resident and visitor survey now available to the public. The survey is part of research being done by Young Strategies, a planning firm hired by Visit Corinth to find out exactly who’s coming to Cross City and identify opportunities to lure more people here. The Corinth Area CVB has already received close to 500 responses and are hoping for even more in July. “We marketed the survey through our email contacts in June and are now sharing the survey link through our social media avenues,” said tourism Director Christy Burns. “We are looking to find out how to get more

return on the tourism tax dollars spent on tourism marketing. We believe the survey answers will help us in that department.” The survey addresses travel and tourism in Corinth and the surrounding area. It includes a question about what activities or experiences might make Corinth more appealing. Options provided include a splash pad, a downtown boutique hotel or a brewery. Burns said the office needs survey responses from both residents and visitors. “We also need responses from visitors who have stayed overnight in Corinth,” said Burns. “I want to ask people to please share the survey link with people they know who have spent the night in the last three or so years.” The online-based survey should take no more than ten minutes to complete Please see SURVEY | 2

In 1916, during World War I, France and Britain launched the Somme Offensive against the German army; the 41/2 -month battle resulted in heavy casualties and produced no clear winner. Dwight D. Eisenhower married Mary (”Mamie”) Geneva Doud in Denver. In 1934, Hollywood began enforcing its Production Code subjecting motion pictures to censorship review. In 1946, the United States exploded a 20-kiloton atomic bomb near Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. In 1957, the International Geophysical Year, an 18-month global scientific study, began. In 1961, Diana, the princess of Wales, was born in Sandringham, England. (She died in a 1997 car crash in Paris at age 36.) In 1973, the Drug Enforcement Administration was established. The Warsaw Pact formally disbanded.

BOONEVILLE — Booneville’s annual Neighborhood 4th of July Parade kicks off at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the city’s incoming elected officials serving as 2017 grand marshals. Line-up for the Independence Day celebration begins at 9 a.m. on Seventh Street. Having been held for

more than four decades, the patriotic parade is a cherished Booneville tradition where participants and attendees dress in red, white and blue in celebration of Independence Day. The parade will travel its usual route as it heads to Foster Park for a brief 4th of July ceremony where the Pilot Club of Booneville will serve its traditional lemonade.

Parade organizers chose to honor Booneville city officials (mayorelect Chris Lindley, and returning aldermen Jason Michael, Jeff Williams, Mark McCoy and aldermen-elect William Scott and Lisa Stevens) to wish them well as a new page begins in Booneville’s city government. Parade organizers Jim Lamb and Keith Shackel-

ford stress parade safety and encourage all participants who ride bikes or 4-wheelers in the parade to wear helmets. Safety is of the utmost importance, organizers say. They remind those in the parade to drive slowly and watch out for each other because many families walk in the parade with their youngsters. All are welcome to par-

ticipate or watch the festivities. For parade information ontact Keith Shackelford at 728-4737 or Jim Lamb at 728-7352. Tuesday’s parade route follows: Participants start on Seventh Street, then turns west on Church Street, north on Ninth Street, then east on Washington, takes right on Fifth Street and ends in Foster Park.

The witness also said he gave Traylor a ride to Combs Court apartments. After police issued a warrant for his arrest, Traylor’s parents bought the then 17-year-old to the police department. Originally charged with capital murder, Traylor’s charges were lowed to first degree murder as part of the plea deal reached between Daniels and public defender Taylor Moss. Corinth, Miss.

The streets belong to all What if you could rent a place to store a giant pile of your stuff free? The bad news is: You can. If you own a car, you can park it on the street in many neighborhoods without paying a cent. Of course, that seems totally normal — but maybe it shouldn’t. As Paul Steely White, executive director of the nonprofit Transportation Alternatives, points out, streets are actually public space. We think they’re a place for cars to drive and sit (mostly sit), because that’s what we’ve gotten used Lenore to. His goal is to get us all to Skenazy think differently. To that end, his group sponColumnist sored a night at the Museum of the City of New York last week, called Streetopia. Hundreds of people visited three floors of exhibits, all showcasing ways to reclaim the city from automobile dominance, such as Barcelona’s “superblocks.” Choked by traffic, that Spanish city is creating small neighborhoods of maybe three square blocks each and allowing cars to drive only around the perimeter. The chunk of blocks becomes a community — kids can play in the streets again, and bicyclists don’t fear cars — while air pollution and noise pollution plummet. But the starkest, most perspective-changing exhibit was simply time-lapse footage of a typical corner in Manhattan where a bike rental rack sits across from some on-street parking. Over the course of a single day, you see people swarming the bike rack, taking bikes out, bringing them back. For a while, almost all the bikes are gone, and then the rack fills up again, and then off they go. And across the street, taking up twice as much space as the rack, are two cars, just sitting there, parked all day. You start to realize how much space we have simply ceded to cars and what a waste that is. “Parking is a finite public resource,” says White. That space we think of as the place where cars have a right to sit all day could be used differently. It could be used to expand the sidewalk or make a bike lane. It could be given over to buses. It could become space for businesses to open up cafes or kiosks -- and pay taxes on the land. Or it could be planted with grass and turned into a playground. We think of it as “parking” only because we believe that cars have the right to it. I was talking to a car-owning friend about this, and he said that free parking is no different from free education. Some people don’t own cars; some people don’t have kids. Our taxes pay for schools and on-street parking anyway. But streets are not like schools. Streets are public land that we are giving away. Would we let a private citizen build his house in the middle of a park? Of course not, because we recognize the park as something that belongs to all of us. It’s time to think of our streets that way. So then: How do we wrest them back from the car owners? Some alternatives that have been tried elsewhere are working. London charges a giant premium to drive into its business district, and as a result, traffic (and parking) are down while commerce is not. Each summer, Paris turns some of its roadways into “beaches,” complete with sand and palm trees. Somehow the citoyens survive. Los Angeles raised its parking meter fees, with the predictable result of cars parking for less time. That means cars are circling for less time, too. “Streets can be designed for either cars or people, but not both at once,” White says. It’s time to stop giving away precious public land. Lenore Skenazy is the founder of FreeRange Kids, a contributor to Reason.com and the author of “Has the World Gone Skenazy?”

Prayer For Today My Creator, I praise thee for the knowledge of life, and the hope of immortality. Help me to express my belief, and to give my utmost for the divinest, that I may be worthy of life eternal. Amen.

A Verse To Share The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners. — Isaiah 61:1

Some things are worse than death BY RAY MOSBY Columnist

“Death be not proud, though some have called thee mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so.” —John Donne ROLLING FORK — There are some people in this world who believe that dying is absolutely the worst thing that can happen to a person. Those people have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Those people have not witnessed as much as I. If you want to see something worse than death, simply visit any nursing home, no matter how good a one, no matter how well administered a one, no matter how caring a one anywhere in this country. There is a hauntingly empty, if inaudible background chorus playing over and over again—like the needle stuck in an old record’s groove— in every one of them: “Oh, look at all the lonely people…” No matter how full of its residents, there is still vacancy, the far away emptiness in so many eyes that is truly, practically tactile. Five years ago this week, had you wanted to see something worse than death, you could have visited Room 28 in this town’s wonderful little nursing home where my wife of then 38 years lay on a bed. After a decade of suf-

fering the dignity destroying and faculty-robbing ravages of dementia, she weighed 82 pounds. Did I mention that many and many a year ago she was one of the runners-up in the Miss Delta State Pageant? Some days she knew me, if not my name. Some days she knew both. Some days she knew neither. But I was always thankful that on my visits there was almost always a spark, even momentary, of recognition in her eyes upon seeing me, rather than that awful, prevailing vacancy. In the providential manner that such things are determined, it would be another year before she would be granted the mercy and relief that death brings in far more cases than are generally recognized. But this column is not about her or me or my family; it is, instead, about you and yours. Plainly put, you need to pay attention to what’s going on and you need to talk. By the end, my wife was on Medicaid—you know, the program that pays for two-thirds of all nursing home patients because neither Medicare nor private insurance will. That was after I had spent almost all our money. Nursing homes are expensive. Got an extra $6,000-$8,000 a month, lying around? Got enough

for a decade of it? Well, just so you know, Medicaid is also the program that the Republican Senate “health” bill would cut by $600 billion to give their donors an $800 billion tax cut. If that happens, it’s apt to get dicey and your options might be a tad limited. Cutting benefits from “those people,” after all, is always a swell idea until you become one of them. (This isn’t about stereotypes, folks, this is about birthing babies and caring for kids with disabilities and providing a way to pay for nursing home care.) As important as that is, though, there is something else you very much need to do. You need to talk about what’s vogue these days to call “end of life decisions.” You need to address the end of life subject with your family long before you are faced with having to make decisions about someone you love. You and your spouse and your children need to sit down together and have a very frank talk about some things that none of you will much want to talk about. But it’s important. You can trust me on this one, folks. It is never fun, but it is much better to do it sooner, rather than later. Quality of life was a governing factor for us but there are no “right” answers, no one size fits all when it

comes to end of life. There is only what’s right for you and your family. But that is not to say that there is not one very wrong answer—and that is to do nothing. At a time that will already be painful enough, there is another source of it lurking. Medicine and law do not always walk hand-in-hand and you absolutely do not want them to clash with you and a loved one in the middle. The decision, whatever it might be, needs to be yours and not somebody else’s. I urge, as strongly as I can, every married couple to have their lawyer execute durable medical powers of attorney for each of you on behalf of the other. It will be the best couple of hundred dollars that you will ever spend. In that way, you can at least take some solace, a small but important comfort that you will need amid the inevitable sadness and grief, that you are there to carry out what he or she would have wanted, one last time. Make sure you have done what is needed to be able to take care of the one you love, one last time. That may not seem important now, but it will. It will. Ray Mosby is editor and publisher of The Deer Creek Pilot in Rolling Fork.

More money won’t solve problems PBS NewsHour aired a story last year about Milwaukee, saying many residents call the city “the worst place to be a black man in America.” It talked about last year’s riots in the city after a cop shot a black man. One black Milwaukee resident explained that this is “what happens when you inflict poverty” on poor black residents. “Inflict poverty?” In the 50 years following President Lyndon Johnson’s launch of the “war on poverty” in 1964, government spent over $22 trillion on welfare and various anti-poverty programs. The problem in our nation’s inner cities is not a lack of money -- it is a moral and spiritual problem largely created by our welfare state. In 1995, President Bill Clinton, who pledged to end “welfare as we know it,” gave a speech described by a Los Angeles Times writer as “the most sweeping analysis of racial issues of his presidency.” On the day of the “March on Washington,” Clinton said black men must take more responsibility for their behavior: “Today’s march is ... also about black men taking renewed responsibility for themselves, their families and their communities.

It’s about saying no to crime and drugs and violence. It’s about standing up for Larry a t o n e m e n t Elder and reconciliation. It’s Columnist about insisting that others do the same and offering to help them. It’s about the frank admission that unless black men shoulder their load, no one else can help them or their brothers, their sisters and their children escape the hard, bleak lives that too many of them still face. ... It’s not racist for whites to assert that the culture of welfare dependency, out-of-wedlock pregnancy and absent fatherhood cannot be broken by social programs, unless there is first more personal responsibility.” In my book, “The Ten Things You Can’t Say In America,” I wrote about a wealthy, idealistic Philadelphia philanthropist. Committed, concerned and worried about the future of urban — primarily black — kids, he “adopted” 112 inner-city sixth-graders, most of whom were products of broken homes. He promised these students that if they

met minimal requirements, including graduating from high school and not getting pregnant or impregnating somebody — he’d pay for all their education, including college tuition. He provided tutors, workshops, after-school programs and summer programs, as well as counselors to be available when trouble arose, whether personal or otherwise. Thirteen years later, the Philadelphia Inquirer followed up on the 112 kids and analyzed the results. The percentage of kids going to college was no greater than percentage of kids from similar backgrounds without prepaid educations. The money was wasted. Forty-five never made it through high school. Of these, 35 dropped out, one died while in school, four died after dropping out, four were working on a GED and one graduated from trade school. Of the high school graduates, 13 were four-year college graduates, 11 were enrolled in four-year college, five were enrolled in two-year college, 12 had dropped out of two- and four-year colleges, seven graduated trade school, eight were enrolled in trade school, six dropped out of

trade school and five got no further education. Of the 67 boys, 19 grew into adult felons. Among the 45 girls, they had 63 children, and more than half had babies before age 18. What do we make of this? The answer is simple: It’s not about money. It’s about values. It’s about discipline and application. It’s about character -- about working hard when you don’t want to. And these values are instilled in the home. The first step is the truth. As long as blacks feel and act oppressed, as if they are under siege and behind enemy lines, little will change. The formula is simple, but it requires effort: hard work wins; you get out of life what you put into it; you cannot control the outcome, but you are 100 percent in control of the effort. Go to school, study, work hard, arrive early, stay late, pay attention to detail and be honest. That is the best “anti-poverty program” ever conceived. Doctor goes on shooting spree at NYC hospital BY COLLEEN LONG AND LARRY NEUMEISTER Associated Press

NEW YORK — A doctor forced from a New York hospital because of sexual harassment accusations returned Friday with an assault rifle hidden under a lab coat and shot seven people, killing one woman and leaving several doctors fighting for their lives, authorities said. The gunman, Dr. Henry Bello, fatally shot himself after trying to set himself on fire at Bronx Lebanon Hospital, they said. He staggered, bleeding, into a hallway where he col-

lapsed and died with the rifle at his side, officials said. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted, spreading terror throughout the medical facility as employees locked themselves inside rooms and patients feared for their lives. “I thought I was going to die,” said Renaldo Del Villar, a patient who was in the third-floor emergency room getting treatment for a lower back injury. Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as the 45-year-old

Bello, who was described on the hospital website as a family medicine physician. Officials said Bello used an AR-15 in the attack on the 16th and 17th floors. Bello was allowed to resign from the hospital in 2015 amid sexual harassment allegations, according to two law enforcement officials. The officials didn’t know the details of the allegations. The officials were not authorized to discuss the still-unfolding investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

No vote GOP bill would let taken on churches endorse bill before political candidates 4th break Associated Press

Associated Press

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump barged into Senate Republicans’ delicate health care negotiations Friday, declaring that if lawmakers can’t reach a deal they should simply repeal “Obamacare” right away and then replace it later on. Trump’s tweet revives an approach that GOP leaders and the president himself considered but dismissed months ago as impractical and politically unwise. And it’s likely to further complicate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s task as he struggles to bridge the divide between GOP moderates and conservatives as senators leave Washington for the Fourth of July break without having voted on a health care bill as planned. “If Republican Senators are unable to pass what they are working on now, they should immediately REPEAL, and then REPLACE at a later date!” Trump wrote. The president sent his early-morning tweet shortly after Nebraska Republican Sen. Ben Sasse appeared on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” to talk about a letter he had sent to Trump making that exact suggestion: a vote on repealing former President Barack Obama’s health law followed by a new effort at a working out a replacement.

WASHINGTON — Churches should have the right to endorse political candidates and still keep their tax-free status, say House Republicans targeting a law that prohibits such outright politicking from the pulpit. Republicans repeatedly have failed to scrap the law preventing churches and other nonprofits from backing candidates, so now they are trying to starve it. With little fanfare, a House Appropriations subcommittee added a provision that would deny money to the IRS to enforce the 63-yearold law to a bill to fund the Treasury Department, Securities and Exchange Commission and other agencies. The subcommittee passed the bill Thursday. Republicans say the

law is enforced unevenly, leaving religious leaders uncertain about what they are allowed to say and do. “I believe that churches have a right of free speech and an opportunity to talk about positions and issues that are relevant to their faith,” said Rep. Jim Renacci, R-Ohio. Some Democrats say the measure comes too close to mixing church and state. They say religious leaders already have First Amendment rights, just like anyone else. But if they want to get political, they don’t have a constitutional right not to pay taxes. Some also worry that the measure could upend the system of campaign financing by allowing churches to use their tax-free status to funnel money to political candidates.

Each tour presents virtual stops, images, text and videos. There are maps, troop positions, Union and Confederate Orders of Battle and all of the resources needed to present a better understanding what happened there in 1862. Even if visitors can’t physically come to the park, they can still use the app to take a virtual tour, according to information from the Civil War Trust’s website. Within the app, there are 11 tour stops and at least 20 points of interest for Corinth. Several of the tour stops include a video presentation recorded at the sites with the familiar faces of Shiloh National Military Park Rangers Ashley Berry and Tom Parson serving as guides sharing more in-depth information. Thus far, park officials say the the feedback has been positive for the app. “The visiting public is

Coming Up In The Daily Corinthian Don’t miss Crossroads Magazine Homes Edition coming in your July 29 Daily Corinthian.

Boy can’t resist sneaking out to play with bullies D E A R ABBY: I’m a 12-yearold boy with some generosity problems. When my Abigail n e i g h b o r Van Buren hood friends come to my house, I offer Dear Abby them some things (food, mostly) that are strictly off-limits, but it feels necessary. Also, these friends bully me, and it’s against the rules to play with them, but I want to, so I sneak out to do it. I know I’m not doing the right thing, but I can’t help it. Can you help me? -- CAN’T SAY NO DEAR CAN’T SAY NO: I’ll try. But first, you will have to understand and accept that “friends” who bully and take advantage of you are NOT friends. Giving them things that are “strictly off-limits” may seem necessary, but it won’t buy real friendship. Believe it or not, your best friends are your parents. That’s why it’s important that you level with them about what has been going on. Ask them if they can help you get into after-school activities where you will meet nicer peo-

ple who might like to be friends with you for no other reason than the fact that you are a nice person, too. DEAR ABBY: I’m having a problem with my dental hygienist, “Gloria.” During my appointments, she engages me in conversation, which invariably lengthens the appointment from a half-hour to a whole hour. She giggles like a schoolgirl and stops multiple times during the cleaning to remove tools from my mouth so we can talk. I don’t want to be rude, but my appointments are on weekdays, and I need to get back to work. Occasionally, I have brought something to read, hoping it would keep Gloria from striking up a conversation, but it never works. I’m now considering changing dentists because I have neither the time nor the patience to deal with her. Please help. -- MIFFED IN MILWAUKEE DEAR MIFFED: When you go to your next appointment, the first words out of your mouth should be to tell Gloria you don’t have time to talk and must be out of there promptly in 30 minutes. If she can’t comply, discuss it with your dentist so he/she can

“remind” Gloria that her relationship with patients isn’t personal, but professional, and discourage the small talk. The dental practice is a business, and if the situation is as you describe, Gloria could book twice as many patients as she’s seeing now if she curtails the small talk. DEAR ABBY: My husband has gained a significant amount of weight, which has changed his appearance. I have to admit I no longer find him attractive and have a hard time even kissing him. I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but I am turned off physically. He wants to lose weight, but can’t seem to find the motivation, even after visiting with a doctor and a dietician. What can I do when he approaches me for a kiss (or more)? -- ASHAMED IN ALABAMA DEAR ASHAMED: Tell him what you have written to me. If that doesn’t give him motivation, nothing will. Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Contact Dear Abby at www. DearAbby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069.

Horoscopes ARIES (March 21-April 19). You can control many things about your present that will lead to gains later. However, the future is still out of your (and everyone’s) control. Accepting this with grace will free up a lot of psychic energy. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). When you get away from the crowd to spend concentrated time alone, real work will happen -- the kind that makes you richer in material and immaterial ways. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Pay attention to the expectations society places on the people in a relationship. Does it vary from role to role? Is it equal? Is it fair? This will matter increasingly over time. There may be something to nip in the bud. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Even in inanimate things and concepts, mutual freedom is important. When you don’t feel the need to own what you love, what you love will seem to pull more weight in the arrange-

ment, working harder to earn your attention. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The situation that once made you feel terribly flawed was ultimately your best teacher and could be credited for your current soaring approval rating. You worked hard to improve, and you’re more attractive because of it. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Your soul is strengthened through work and through taking on more responsibility. You’ll go out and find the circumstances that are conducive to what you’d like to accomplish next. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You can stop people from treating you differently than you want to be treated, and it’s pretty simple, too. Be aware of what you’re allowing. You have more options than you exercise. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You’ve plenty of hustle, and people around you see how hard you work. They respect your mind and want the privi-

lege of your loyalty. You’ll be an example for the less experienced. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Avoid the prognosticators, be they skeptical or optimistic. You won’t know if it was a good idea or a bad idea until it’s an executed idea. The only way forward is to go. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You can avoid the things that trigger your frustration and you can change your environment, but ultimately the best way to stop yourself from getting angry is not to give in to it. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You never know which relationships are going to benefit you the most. Not all friendships will help you advance your interests, but they will all contribute to your well-being. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Learned, intelligent, creative people can believe the most ridiculous things. It is therefore better to let yourself be influenced by handpicked ideas than by people.

Dear Annie: On Dec. 13, 1995, my 20-year-old son was killed in an accident at work. I was devastated. I had started putting up Christmas decorations before his death. But after his death, I had no desire to put any more up, so I decided to give the tree away. The weekend after his memorial service found me back at work, delivering newspapers. While delivering papers, I heard a voice say, “If you don’t put up the tree, you dishonor Danny.” I spent hours trying to understand but finally let it go. Later that day, when I had finished my chores, I sat down in the recliner. I picked up the pad of paper and pencil beside it to do some sketching. But instead, I watched in amazement, as my hand seemed to have its own mind. I was multiplying numbers. I came up with a huge number and followed it by a colon and the number 1. I wasn’t sure what the numbers meant at first. Then it dawned on me. Life or death only occurs when the soul arrives or leaves the body. It happens in the blink of an eye. The 1 in my equation stood for the one second it took for Danny’s soul to leave. The huge number to the left was the number of seconds he had lived.

Dear Annie And no matter how horrible, how painful that one second of his death was, it was nothing compared with the millions of joyous seconds of his life. So I allowed myself to grieve, but not for long. I wasn’t being fair to Danny by letting that one second overcome the rest. The day of his death means nothing. The day of his birth means everything. Every year, starting on the day after his birthday, I begin collecting stuffed animals. On his birthday, I take these animals to the hospital for the children who are patients there. I also ask the hospital staff to take some home for their own children because of the care they gave my son. — Sandy Dear Sandy: I’m so moved; I’m at a loss for words. All I can say is thank you, so very much, for sharing your beautiful, powerful story with the world. Dear Annie: I do not normally read advice columns, but I now enjoy reading yours on a regular basis. I’d like to comment on the recent column that contained the letter from

the gentleman who had a big what-if when it came to the woman he didn’t marry. As usual, your response was direct and made sense. What I want to say is that I think there is a significant difference between harboring a regret and wondering about what life would be like if something in particular had happened. I think that most of us from time to time wonder about the what-ifs in our past. We all make decisions — some good, some bad — and we need to accept those decisions. We cannot change the past, but we can learn from the bad decisions. I think the gentleman who wrote to you is reacting in an unhealthy manner and needs counseling, which I hope can help him come to terms with his problem. — George in Missouri Dear George: You’re right. It’s totally normal to have “what if” thoughts from time to time. That’s a natural part of reflecting on your life. When it becomes obsessive, as you mentioned, it’s time to dig deeper and figure out what in the present is making you so focused on the past. Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com.

NEMCC athletes set new record Northeast Sports Information

JACKSON — Northeast Mississippi Community College’s athletic department continues to set higher standards in the scholastic realm after breaking a school record for the second consecutive year. Forty student-athletes representing seven of Northeast’s sports programs were honored with Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Academic All-State distinction. It is the most MACJC Academic All-State selections in school history. Northeast set

another record one year ago with 20 total players securing National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic Student-Athlete Awards. “I personally would like to congratulate this group of young men and women,” said Northeast athletic director Kent Farris. “We are very excited about the outstanding number of student-athletes that received recognition. It is a reflection of the hard work that they put forth in the classroom.” The MACJC annually acknowledges individuals from each

of its 15 member institutions. It is the third straight year in which Northeast had over 20 athletes tabbed as Academic All-State. Freshmen and sophomores are eligible for scholastic accolades from the MACJC by taking a minimum of 24 cumulative hours. Student-athletes with a grade point average (GPA) between 3.25 and 3.79 earn Academic All-State status while those with a 3.8 GPA or higher garner Distinguished Academic All-State laurels. The most individual honorees came from the baseball

team for a second consecutive year. Fourteen different Tigers captured these prizes while four accumulated perfect 4.0 GPAs. The softball squad, which has been named an All-Academic Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for three straight seasons, had the second most players decorated with nine. Over 50 percent of the softball roster was commended for their intellectual prowess. Baseball and women’s basketball also came within five percentage points of reaching the 50 percent mark as well.

Construction activity has been one of the bright spots for the economy this year. Spending on homebuilding, commercial and government projects rose in the first quarter. It slowed in April by the largest amount in 12 months, however. Was April’s decline in construction spending just a blip or the start of a trend? Find out Monday, when the Commerce Department releases its latest monthly snapshot of construction spending.

All about jobs

Economists project that the nation’s trade gap narrowed in May. They predict the Commerce Department will report on Thursday that the trade deficit shrank to $46.1 billion in May. That would be down from $47.6 billion in April, when the trade gap rose to the highest level since January. A decline in exports contributed to the increase in the deficit in April.

The Labor Department reports its latest monthly job data on Friday. Economists predict hiring in the U.S. rebounded in June as employers added 173,000 jobs. That would follow a gain of 138,000 jobs in May, which was down from the previous month’s gain, but high enough to help cut the unemployment rate to a 16-year low of 4.3 percent.
