An Alcorn County man faces a couple of felony charges after fleeing from officers Friday morning. Bishop Martin, 22, of Highway 356, is charged with bur-

glary, felony evading and misdemeanor shoplifting. Sheriff Ben Caldwell said his department responded to a call of possible shoplifting at Dollar General in Biggersville around 10 a.m., and a pursuit followed. One of the two suspects

matched the description of an individual the department was looking for in connection with a residential burglary that occurred in Farmington Thursday evening on County Road 119. Constable Wayne Duncan spotted the vehicle after it left

the Biggersville store and attempted to make a traffic stop. The vehicle fled south on Highway 45 and turned west onto Prentiss County Road 8200. Caldwell said the vehicle went into a ditch, and the two suspects fled the vehicle on foot. They

were found hiding in the woods a short distance from the vehicle. The second subject was not charged and was released. The sheriff thanked Duncan, Prentiss deputies and the Mississippi Highway Patrol for assisting in the response.

In an effort to raise much needed funds for Alcorn Central football, the team’s booster club

is giving one fan the chance to win big money. The Aug. 18 gridiron matchup between Alcorn Central and Tishomingo County will be

A Booneville man charged with capital murder in the death of his wife has been returned to the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections while awaiting action by the local grand jury. Bond was denied for Michael Brian Rutledge during a Thursday preliminary hearing. He is accused of the brutal beating and stabbing of his wife, Laura Ann Rutledge. Her body was found in a wooded area off of North College Street last month with her hands bound behind her back. She was allegedly stabbed more than 40 times.

The Eagle Homeschool Association will kick off its new school year with an organizational meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17, at Farmington Baptist Church. The meeting is intended to be an opportunity for people to find out about what Eagle has to offer, to sign up for various activities, to submit membership materials, to

check out the Eagle Library and get to know other home school families. Eagle member Bevin Wilder said the meeting is open to anyone who wants information. “It’s a great time to ask questions. I really want to be a little more proactive in making people aware that we exist. If they are interested in home schooling and just have questions, but they’re not committed, then there’s someone they can talk to who can answer their questions,” said Wilder. Eagle Homeschool Association

Authorities say Rutledge has confessed to the crime. The case has been bound over to the Prentiss County Grand Jury for indictment. The next session of the grand jury is scheduled to begin Oct. 16. Rutledge was awaiting transport to a state correctional facility Friday where he will begin serving the remaining 14 years of his sentence on a prior conviction for burglary of a dwelling. He was on probation for that conviction at the time of his arrest for the murder. Circuit Court Judge Jim Pounds ordered his probation revoked in a hearing held Tuesday in Prentiss County Circuit Court.

quarter for chance to play “Punt, Pass, Kick.” A winner will be drawn at the end of the first quarter and, during half-time, they’ll get a chance to win $5,000. “The winner will start at one end of the field and punt, pass and kick. If they can make a field goal at the other end of the field then he or she will win $5,000,” said Becky Winters, Alcorn Central football booster club president. “It’s a win-win for both Zaxby’s, the fans and the school.” This will mark the second year the booster club and Zaxby’s has teamed up to host the contest. Last year’s event was over shadowed by rain said Winters. A fan did attempt the task, but came up short in the challenge. “The booster club counts on special fundraisers like these to help buy uniforms and helmets

and perform field maintenance,” added Winters. “We also raise money at our concession stand and through gate sales at each home football game.” The booster club recently raised enough money to purchase around $20,000 worth of new weight equipment. “We could not do what we do without hometown help and great local businesses like Zaxby’s,” added Winters. Next Friday night’s game is set for 7 p.m. at the Alcorn Central High School football field in Glen. According to Winters, Zaxby’s will have boxed dinners available for $6 each during the game. The Zaxby’s mascot will also be on hand meeting children and hanging out coupons to adults. Kindergartner falls asleep, left on bus HATTIESBURG — A Mississippi school district is investigating after an unsupervised kindergartner was left on a school bus for most of the day. WDAM-TV reported the student fell asleep underneath a seat on the Hattiesburg Public School District bus on Wednesday morning. The school district said in a news release that administrators were notified of the incident at 2:30 p.m. School medical personnel examined the child and found no “abnormal” effects from the event. Officials say the district is taking preventative measures to ensure that this does not happen again. The incident is under investigation by the school district.

School bus tirade caught on camera KILN — A Mississippi administrator’s tirade to students whose parents complained about a hot school bus was caught on video and has been

posted online. The Sun Herald reported the video shows Hancock County Transportation Director Michael Ladner addressing Hancock Middle School students on a school bus Wednesday. Ladner told the students in the video that it will only get worse if students told their parents. He goes on to say they’re in south Mississippi and if the students don’t want to live in hot weather, they should move north. Superintendent Alan Dedeaux says he has received several complaints about the heat on that particular bus and is working on solutions.

4 inmates escape from county jail CLARKSDALE — Authorities say four inmates have escaped from a county jail in Mississippi. WMC-TV reported that the inmates were reported missing around 1:30 a.m. Friday, following a routine check inside the Coahoma County Jail. The station reports that the escaped inmates have criminal

charges of murder, rape, assault, and burglary. Authorities say all neighboring law enforcement agencies have been alerted and are searching for the inmates. A $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of any of the suspects has been announced.

6 Mercedes-Benz vehicles stolen HORN LAKE — Some car thieves have a taste for the three-pointed star. Police in the Memphis, Tennessee suburb of Horn Lake, Mississippi report that six Mercedes-Benz vehicles were taken from a car lot this week. Someone cut the locks on the gate at Silver Star Imports and took Mercedes ranging from 1999 to 2009 models, local media report. Other vehicles on the lot had been moved around, and some had been damaged. Four of the vehicles were recovered across the state line near a Memphis apartment complex. However, two

remain missing. No arrests have been made and police have named no suspects.

Truck wrecks, kills dozens of calves COLLINS — A truck crash has killed dozens of calves on a south Mississippi highway, with cowboys working for hours to round up roaming survivors. Trooper Master Sgt. Brent Barfield says an 18-wheel cattle truck overturned on U.S. 84 east of Collins in Covington County after 1 a.m. Friday. Barfield says the driver, Marty Saul of Perry, Florida, suffered minor injuries after he lost control of the truck. WDAM-TV reported at least 50 calves died in the crash. Cowboys on horseback worked throughout the day Friday trying to catch remaining calves. Westbound U.S. 84, a major corridor across the southern part of the state, was closed for nearly 12 hours. Once the highway reopened, state Troopers advised motorists to drive carefully and watch for cows.

All three women also wanted to clear up misconceptions about home schooling such as home schoolers lacking socialization, lack of sports participation or other similar activities. Finally, they wanted people to understand that a home school education is a quality education. “We don’t have anything against public school, but home schooling is not a subpar education by any stretch. I mean, how can you beat one-on-one tutoring for your entire educational career?” said Wilder. Eagle members would enjoy the opportunity to tell others about why they chose home schooling and the meeting is the perfect time to come. After the organizational meeting in the church’s sanctuary, there will be a dessert social in the gym with information tables set up to answer questions. Board hears plea for library funding BOONEVILLE â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The Prentiss County Genealogical and Historical Society is encouraging county supervisors to increase support for the library. Society President Diane Garvin asked the board of supervisors to seriously consider a request for additional funding of the library system recently made by Northeast Regional Library Executive Director Dee Hare. Hare has said the system is expecting an approximately $95,000 cut in state funding for the next fiscal year and could be forced to close smaller branches, cut hours or services or reduce staffing due to the cuts. She is

asking each of the counties in the systemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s region to increase funding by 10 percent. Garvin told board members the library is an invaluable resource for researchers working to trace their familiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; roots and the history of the area. She said they often welcome researches from outside the region and even out of state to the library to access materials that are not available anywhere else and cannot be found online. She believes the library provides essential services to the community and it would be a major loss if services had to be cut. Supervisor Mike Huddleston

said he and other board members have received numerous calls from citizens concerned about the library and as they work on a new budget they are looking carefully at what can be done to help the situation. He also encouraged citizens to talk to their state legislators about the state budget and said the libraryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s funding issues are one of numerous examples of the state cutting its budget by passing costs on to the counties. The board tabled discussion of a temporary interlocal agreement with the City of Booneville for rental of office space at the justice center and housing of

inmates in the county jail. The city had previously approved the new temporary agreement which calls for the city to pay the county $6,000 per month for the rental of office space and $25 per day per inmate housed. The previous agreement provided for a total payment of $13,500 per month with no per inmate charge. However, due to crowded conditions at the jail some city and county inmates are now being housed in other area facilities. Board members said theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to look closer at the proposal before giving final approval to the agreement.

President Donald Trump has vowed to meet more North Korea threats with “power the likes of which the world has never seen” and Kim Jong-un has responded with a plan for a nuke attack on the US island of Guam. Plans are being made for a horror scenario we must take seriously. Most of us want to be confident that America with the aid of Japan and our strategic defense system can stop any missile attack. We know we have plenty of bombs to strike North Korea in return. Just one of our submarines named “USS Kentucky” has two hundred nuclear bombs most of which are more powerful than the one bomb that struck Hiroshima. This is frightening that enough power is on one submarine to take out an entire country or more. Such a scenario makes me wonder how much can the planet stand? If four or five countries ever get into an unleashing of nuclear weapons on each other I believe it would be more than our planet could survive. If our planet could stay intact the planet might take hundreds of years to ever recoup from the devastation. The planet is amazing but mankind has developed the ability to annihilate our beautiful planet. Business Insider printed a story a couple of years ago that shortly after the end of World War II, the scientists who developed the atomic bombs dropped on Japan tried to envision the kind of nuclear event that could lead to the destruction of not just cities, but the entire world. A recently declassified document shared by nuclear historian Alex Wellerstein gives the verdict that scientists at the Los Alamos laboratory and test site reached in 1945. They found that “it would require only in the neighborhood of 10 to 100 Supers of this type” to put the human race in peril. With so many atomic bombs now existing in the world it would be fathomable that ten to a 100 could be unleashed given the right scenario of hostility between enough countries. No one is thinking that many will be unleashed by anyone. What if North Korea successfully unleashes several of their stocked nuclear bombs? What if we cannot intercept them all? Our defense may be great but even the greatest defense systems have flaws and holes. How many would die? If North Korea unleashes one then we know our President Trump may unleash one on North Korea or take out tens of thousands of lives. The causalities could end up in the millions. If Kim Jong-un launches one toward our mainland there is no guarantee it would hit Seattle or Chicago. It could end up hitting any town or even rural area in the United States. Do you think you are safe just because you in an obscure town? If nuclear missiles are fired we are all at risk. Please keep in mind that everything will be interrupted. With any kind of national crisis gasoline shortages occur. Grocery store supplies might be interrupted. Power grids could be demolished or interrupted. There are many ways our lives could be interrupted if we survive an attack. The bottom line is that we all hope and pray that China, Japan and other nations will work with us to help us resolve this lingering nightmare with Kim Jong-Un. The problem is that it won’t be over. There will still be a chance of this recurring nightmare that will come back from North Korea or even very soon Iran. The scenario of a world holocaust is becoming too imminent. We must seriously answer this question, “Will the world ever really rest with North Korea having nuclear weapons?” Another question is can we really allow this to continue? ‘Certainties’ include universal health care OXFORD — There are certain certainties we accept: death and taxes. Other certainties can be deduced from trends. For instance, the sun will set on Mississippi’s beleaguered state flag. Eventually there will be a new banner. Perhaps it will even be unifying. Another is that legalization of recreational marijuana will spread to all 50 states. Legislatures are increasingly flocking to this “pot” of gold. Another certainty is that there will be universal, cradle-to-grave “free” health care across America. It will happen. The die has been cast. Asa Hutchinson is the conservative Republican governor of Arkansas who made headlines earlier this year for pushing to execute five convicts back-to-back. He should be making more headlines for his acceptance that universal care is inevitable, and that the conversation should center on how best to make it work. Hutchinson and legions of others truly understand the vast inefficiency of the federal government in managing services. The difference is he’s dealing with his angst instead of denying the future. The underpinning is this: America wasn’t designed with efficiency in mind. At all levels, the blueprint called for maximizing in-

dividual liberty, which, by the way, is the core proposition of those who insist nationCharlie al health care Mitchell is yet another something Columnist for nothing program. To stick with that is to reject the positives of shared services. Even before there was a federal government, Ben Franklin understood the mail (and commerce) would move better if there were public highways, state-tostate, that met up at common points. As postmaster, he ordained “post roads.” The public shared in the costs. Some paid a lot. Some paid not a penny. Everybody benefited. There are many, many other examples of shared services. Each has a funding mechanism; some have public-private ownership. The biggie is the armed forces of the United States. Some pay nothing; some pay a lot. The same is true for public schools, state and local law enforcement agencies and even utilities. We don’t all have to have our own wells, septic tanks and generators and we pay water, sewer and electricity bills based on our use.

Collectively, we support fire departments through taxes, and they respond without checking ability to pay. Health care costs have had a pattern, too. Where Mississippi and other states at one time had public hospitals to provide “free” care with general fund revenue, the big picture now involves private insurance. But just like public programs, the core notion of the insurance industry has always been sharing the risk — albeit privately and profitably. One argument of those adamantly opposed to Obamacare or any federal insurance mandate is federal involvement will kill innovation. That’s a real risk. The freedom the world of medicine has had to create better procedures, devices and medicines has no doubt been driven by the profit motive. Some say that would vanish. It would be crucial to retain an element of competition (as Obamacare attempts to do). The first steps toward universal federal health care were taken more than 60 years ago when Congress created Medicaid for the poorest of the poor and disabled and Medicare for senior citizens, regardless of their ability to pay. Both have evolved into gnarly, marginally functional and highly wasteful systems

that are breaking federal and state treasuries. Both require participants to pay, but coverage is provided whether payment is made or not. Now consider this: More than 400,000 (14 percent) of Mississippi’s 3 million residents are 65 or older and, although there is some overlap (dual eligible), another 675,000 (23 percent) are enrolled in Medicaid — even without the expansion proposed by Obamacare. See? A single-payer system is a certainty. There is no “going back to the old days.” Instead of fighting it and failing to recognize it is an evolutionary step in shared services, Hutchinson has a task force examining using state Medicaid dollars to purchase private policies. Maybe it will work; maybe not. In any event, it’s better than just ignoring the situation, continuing to cut funds from other state functions to prop up Medicaid. It is pointless to hope the challenge of creating the best possible shared services system will go away. It won’t. Universal health care is coming to America. Deal with it. Is the American empire worth the price? “When a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight,” Samuel Johnson observed, “it concentrates his mind wonderfully.” And the prospect of a future where Kim Jong Un can put a nuclear weapon on a U.S. city is going to cause this nation to reassess the risks and rewards of the American Imperium. First, some history. “Why should Americans be first to die in any second Korean war?” this writer asked in 1999 in “A Republic, Not an Empire.” “With twice the population of the North and twenty times its economic power, South Korea ... is capable of manning its own defense. American troops on the DMZ should be replaced by South Koreans.” This was denounced as neo-isolationism. And, in 2002, George W. Bush declared the U.S. “will not permit the world’s most dangerous regimes to threaten us with the world’s most destructive weapons.” Bluster and bluff. In 2006, Pyongyang called and raised and tested an atom bomb. Now Kim Jong Un is close to an ICBM. Our options? As Kim believes the ability to hit America with a nuclear weapon is the only certain way he has of deterring us from killing his regime and him, he will not

be talked out of his ICBM. Nor, short of an embargoblockade by China, will sanctions keep him from his goal, to which he inches closer with each

missile test. As for the “military option,” U.S. strikes on Kim’s missile sites could cause him to unleash his artillery on Seoul, 35 miles south. In the first week of a second Korean war, scores of thousands could be dead. If North Korea’s artillery opened up, says Gen. Barry McCaffrey, the U.S. would be forced to use tactical atomic weapons to stop the carnage. Kim could then give the suicidal order to launch his nukes. A third option is to accept and live with a North Korean ICBM, as we have lived for decades with the vast nuclear arsenals of Russia and China. Now, assume the best: We get through this crisis without a war, and Kim agrees to stop testing ICBMs and nuclear warheads. Given concessions, Kim might suspend missile and nuclear tests. But again, we deceive ourselves if we believe he will give up the idea of acquiring the one

weapon that might ensure regime survival. Hence, assuming this crisis is resolved, what does the future of U.S.North Korean relations look like? To answer that question, consider the past. In 1968, North Korea hijacked the USS Pueblo on the high seas and interned its crew. LBJ did nothing. In April 1969, North Korea shot down an EC-121, 100 miles of its coast, killing the crew. Nixon did nothing. Under Jimmy Carter, North Koreans axe-murdered U.S. soldiers at Panmunjom. We defiantly cut down a nearby tree. And Kim Jong Un has murdered his uncle and brother. If the past is prologue, and it has proven to be, the future holds this. A renewal of ICBM tests until a missile is perfected. Occasional atrocities creating crises between the U.S. and North Korea. America being repeatedly dragged to the brink of a war we do not want to fight. As Secretary of Defense James Mattis said Sunday, such a war would be “catastrophic. ... A conflict in North Korea ... would be probably the worst kind of fighting in most people’s lifetimes.” When the lesson sinks in that a war on the peninsula

would be a catastrophe, and a growing arsenal of North Korean ICBMs targeted on America is intolerable, the question must arise: Why not move U.S. forces off the peninsula, let South Korean troops replace them, sell Seoul all the modern weapons it needs, and let Seoul build its own nuclear arsenal to deter the North? Remove any incentive for Kim to attack us, except to invite his own suicide. And tell China: Halt Kim’s ICBM program, or we will help South Korea and Japan become nuclear powers like Britain and France. Given the rising risk of our war guarantees, from the eastern Baltic to the Korean DMZ — and the paltry rewards of the American Imperium — we are being bled from Libya to Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen — a true America First foreign policy is going to become increasingly attractive. Kim’s credible threat to one day be able to nuke a U.S. city is going to concentrate American minds wonderfully. Patrick J. BEDMINSTER, N.J. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; President Donald Trump on Friday issued fresh threats of swift and forceful retaliation against nuclear North Korea, declaring the U.S. military â&#x20AC;&#x153;locked and loadedâ&#x20AC;? and warning that the communist countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leader â&#x20AC;&#x153;will regret it fastâ&#x20AC;? if he takes any action against U.S. territories or allies. The warnings came in a cascade of unscripted statements throughout the day, each ratcheting up a rhetorical standoff between the two nuclear nations. The president appeared to draw another red line that would trigger a U.S. attack against North Korea and â&#x20AC;&#x153;big, big troubleâ&#x20AC;? for its leader, Kim Jong Un. Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comments, however, did not appear to be backed by significant military

mobilization on either side of the Pacific, and an important, quiet diplomatic channel remained open. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If he utters one threat in the form of an overt threat â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which by the way he has been uttering for years and his family has been uttering for years â&#x20AC;&#x201D; or he does anything with respect to Guam or anyplace else thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an American territory or an American ally, he will truly regret it and he will regret it fast,â&#x20AC;? Trump told reporters at his New Jersey golf resort. Asked if the U.S. was going to war, he said cryptically, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think you know the answer to that.â&#x20AC;? The compounding threats came in a week in which longstanding tensions between the countries risked abruptly boiling over. New United Nations sanctions con-

demning the Northâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rapidly developing nuclear program drew fresh ire and threats from Pyongyang. Trump responded by vowing to rain down â&#x20AC;&#x153;fire and furyâ&#x20AC;? if challenged. The North then threatened to lob missiles near Guam, a tiny U.S. territory some 2,000 miles from Pyongyang. Tough talk aside, talks between senior U.S. and North Korean diplomats continue through a back channel previously used to negotiate the return of Americans held in North Korea. The talks have expanded to address the deterioration of the relationship. They havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quelled tensions, but could be a foundation for a more diplomacy, according to U.S. officials and others briefed on the process. They werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t authorized to discuss the confidential exchanges and spoke on

condition of anonymity. Trump on Friday sought to project military strength, only dialing back slightly throughout the day. He began with a morning tweet: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely. Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!â&#x20AC;? He later retweeted a posting from U.S. Pacific Command that showed B-1B Lancer bomber planes on Guam that â&#x20AC;&#x153;stand ready to fulfill USFKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s #FightTonight mission if called upon to do so.â&#x20AC;? Such declarations, however, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t indicate a new, more aggressive posture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fight tonightâ&#x20AC;? has long been the motto of U.S. forces in South Korea to show theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always ready for combat on the Korean Peninsula.

WASHINGTON â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Message to President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans: Stop trying to scuttle the Obama health care law, and start trying to make it more effective. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the resounding word from a national poll released Friday by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation. The survey was taken following last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Senate derailment of the GOP drive to supplant much of President Barack Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s statute with a diminished federal role in health care. Around 4 in 5 want the Trump administration to take actions that help Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s law function properly, rather than trying to undermine it. Trump has suggested steps like halting subsidies to insurers who reduce out-of-pockets health costs for millions of consumers. His administration has discussed other moves like curbing outreach programs that persuade people to buy coverage and not enforcing the tax penalty the statute imposes on those who remain uninsured. Just 3 in 10 want Trump and Republicans to continue their drive to repeal and replace the statute. Most prefer that they instead move to shore up the lawâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s marketplaces, which are seeing rising premiums and in some areas few insurers willing to sell policies. Flying in the face of that, hardline conservatives launched an uphill bid Friday to force a fresh House vote to revoke Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s law without an immediate replacement. The House Freedom Caucus filed a petition to force a vote if it is signed by 218 lawmakers, which seems unlikely because of GOP divisions and Democratic opposition. Ominously for the GOP, 6 in 10 say Trump and congressional Republicans are responsible for any upcoming health care problems since they control government. That could be a bad sign for Republicans as they prepare to defend their House and Senate majorities in the 2018 elections.

CHICAGO â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A hair stylist suffered more than 40 stab wounds to his upper body in a fatal attack last month in the high-rise Chicago condo of a Northwestern University professor, police said Friday. The since-fired professor, Wyndham Lathem, and Oxford University financial officer Andrew Warren were arrested in the San Francisco area eight days after 26-year-old Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau was found dead last month. Cornell-Duranleau suffered â&#x20AC;&#x153;lacerations and mutilations to his body, his upper body, but not to the point of decapitation,â&#x20AC;? Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. He described the attack as â&#x20AC;&#x153;certainly very intense.â&#x20AC;? Authorities have said the attack on Cornell-Duranleau, a Michigan native who moved to Chicago last year, was so brutal that the blade of the knife investigators believe was used in the stabbing was broken. When police found him, he had already been dead for at least 12 hours. Guglielmi said police believe there might have been some tension in Lathem and Cornell-Duranleauâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s relationship. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been looking a great deal,

not only at the relationship between Dr. Lathem and the victim, but also the connection between all three,â&#x20AC;? he said. Guglielmi said Chicago police are investigating the backgrounds of all the men but wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be releasing details until they have questioned Lathem and Warren, who separately surrendered to California authorities last week. The pair had been on the run for eight days. During a hearing Friday in San Francisco, Warren agreed to return to Illinois to face charges and acknowledged that he was the suspect being sought by authorities in Cook County, Illinois. Warren, a 56-year-old British national, arrived in the U.S. days before the killing. Warren wore an orange jumpsuit during Fridayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hearing, and he appeared unshaven after six days in jail. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He is presumed innocent,â&#x20AC;? said his public defender, Ariel BoyceSmith. She said Warren was â&#x20AC;&#x153;agreeableâ&#x20AC;? to being returned to Chicago, but she declined further comment. Lathem, 42, is being held without bail in Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Alameda County and has waived extradition to Chicago. His attorney has called him a â&#x20AC;&#x153;gentle soul.â&#x20AC;? Northwestern University said Monday that it fired him effective Aug. 4.

Not guilty plea for suspect in Missouri officerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death By MARGARET STAFFORD Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A judge entered a not guilty plea Friday for the man accused in the killing of a western Missouri police officer during a traffic stop. Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton appeared via video at the Henry County Courthouse to answer charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Officer Gary Michael in Clinton. McCarthyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next court appearance was scheduled for Oct. 20. Investigators say Michael was killed when the driver of a car he stopped for a traffic violation Sunday jumped out and shot him. The suspect drove away, crashing a few blocks from the scene of the shooting then fleeing on foot. Michael was able to return fire. McCarthy was arrested walking on a road after a two-day manhunt.

Michael, 39, was the first police officer killed in the line of duty in Clinton, a town of about 9,000 residents about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Kansas City. His visitation was scheduled in Clinton Friday and the funeral will be Saturday. A second man, William Noble, 35, of Clinton, was charged Thursday with felony tampering with evidence after prosecutors alleged he supplied the weapon used to kill Michael. According to a police probable cause statement, Noble began â&#x20AC;&#x153;fake cryingâ&#x20AC;? while initially telling two officers who visited his home Thursday that he bought the rifle and sold it to McCarthy. He eventually changed his story and acknowledged that McCarthy asked him to buy the rifle for him. He said he did so because McCarthy was from out of state.

DENVER â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A judge on Friday threw out a Denver radio hostâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s case against Taylor Swift in a trial that delved into their dueling lawsuits over whether he groped her during a backstage meet-and-greet and whether she and her team ruined his career. U.S. District Judge William Martinez determined that the pop star could not be held liable because David Mueller failed to prove that she personally set out to have him fired after the 2013 photo op. His identical allegations against Swiftâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother and her radio liaison will go to jurors for a verdict. Mueller denies groping Swift and sued the singer, her mother, Andrea Swift, and their radio handler, Frank Bell, seeking up to $3 million as compensation for his ruined career. The singer-songwriter said in her countersuit that she wanted a symbolic $1 and the chance to stand up for other women. The jury will still consider her claim. Swift teared up as the judge read his decision, saying there was no evidence that her actions were insincere. Afterward, her team smiled

and embraced. Muellerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t speak. The move came after days of testimony from the singer and others and just before jurors were set to hear closing arguments. Swift spent an hour on the witness stand Thursday defiantly recounting what she called a â&#x20AC;&#x153;despicable and horrifying and shockingâ&#x20AC;? encounter before a concert. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He stayed attached to my bare ass-cheek as I lurched away from him,â&#x20AC;? Swift testified. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a definite grab. A very long grab,â&#x20AC;? she added in her testimony. Swiftâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s testy exchange with Muellerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attorney occasionally elicited chuckles â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even from the six-woman, two-man jury. She got a laugh when she said her security guard saw Mueller â&#x20AC;&#x153;lift my skirtâ&#x20AC;? but someone would have had to have been underneath her to see the actual groping â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;and we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have anyone positioned there.â&#x20AC;? Swift testified that after the photo was taken, she tried to get as far away Mueller as she could. She said she told him and his girlfriend, who was also in the photo, â&#x20AC;&#x153;thank you for comingâ&#x20AC;? in a monotone voice before they left.
