Lady Aggies pin down Class I state title Aggies finish as state runners-up

BY H. LEE SMITH II Thirteen proved to be lucky for the Kossuth girls’ bowling team. Kossuth recorded a total pin fall of 2,775 in the Class I State Championship on March 5 at Fannin Lanes in Flowood. State runners-up from a season ago, Kossuth was the leader in the clubhouse, but the entire eight-team field wasn’t able to compete due to weather. The event finished up 13 days later, with Kossuth earning its first state bowling title with a 3-pin margin over Itawamba AHS. “We only returned two bowlers PA G E 8

from last years state runner-up team,” said coach Creighton Nelms. One of those returnees -- Alison Strickland -- paced KHS with a 587 series. Her 156 in one of her four frames was second-best on the squad. Jasmine Lee -- who along with Kerissa Martin, Claire Cornelius and Abbie Clausel combined for one series -- turned in the champions highest single game at 168. Kaylee Martin was second with a 564 series, Samantha Talley -- the only other holdover from 2014 -- turned in a 561. Alyssa Rice compiled a 549,

The Alcorn Central Dance Team beat out against 14 other teams to win the Hip-Hop State Championship.

Hip-Hop-Hooray: Alcorn Central wins state title BY KIMBERLY SHELTON Dancing its way to victory, the Alcorn Central High School Dance Team claimed top honors at the Mississippi High School Athletic Association State Dance Competition. Held in Jackson at the Coliseum on Friday, Dec. 12, the team competed against 14 other teams for the 1A-6A Hip-Hop State Championship title. Judged on its execution of hip-hop movement, skill, strength and control as well as the synchronization/uniformity of timing and rhythm, spacing and communication and projection of connecting and engaging the audience, the team received high marks throughout its performance. The routine itself was judged on the choreography of creative hip-hop movements, level changes and group work. The originality of music, staging, www.mycrossroadsmagazine.com

seamless transitions from one formation to another, difficulty of movement and skills such as tricks, floor work and lifts were also evaluated. In addition, the group had to achieve an overall impression combining crowd appeal and involvement, music, choreography and costume. According to the team’s coach, the ACHS Dance Team began seven years ago. “Of those seven years competing at the state level, our team has brought home four state titles for their school,” said Marley Whitaker Ashe, who has coached the team since its inception. “I have been a part of the dance team since it began in 2007. I was the choreographer who came in to do the halftime dances and competition routines up until last year, when I was hired as the official head coach.”

Now in her second year as coach and choreographer, Whitaker takes pride in the accomplishments of her dancers. “Our first win of the Hip-Hop state title began with the team in 2010. We won consecutively for three years in a row. Last year, we came in runnerup which was still an honor, but not something we were going to settle for,” she said. “I’ve always tried to instill in my girls the importance of pushing themselves to their limits and never giving up. They are always better and can do more than what they think. Sometimes it just takes a little pushing and motivation to bring it out of them.” Hearts pumping with excitement and adrenaline, the team waited anx-

Kossuth players celebrate after receiving the trophy for winning the Class 3A Baseball state title. The Aggies are the first Alcorn County team with multiple titles on the diamond

2014 Baseball

Kossuth sweeps Sumrall again in title series BY STEVE BEAVERS AND BRANDON SPECK PEARL — Connar Boyer took one for the team to give Kossuth its second consecutive Class 3A State Baseball Championship on Friday, May 23. The Aggie shortstop was the third player hit in the bottom of the seventh by Sumrall pitchers as KHS rallied for a pair of runs to claim a 4-3 decision in Game 2 of the series. KHS won Game 1 of the series with a 7-6 win in 11 innings on Wednesday, May 21. Friday’s win at Trustmark Park concluded the Aggies’ postseason run with a 10-1 mark and second title in three appearances in the championship series. PA G E 1 0

Kossuth (23-11) also becomes the first Alcorn County squad to win two baseball state crowns. Over the last two seasons, the Aggies have posted an 18-2 mark and 4-0 record versus Sumrall in two championship series contests. In Game 2, Kossuth didn’t get a ball out of the infield in collecting gold. Seniors Tyler Mercer and Matthew Woodruff both were hit by Sumrall pitcher Drake Pace to begin the bottom of the seventh. Zack Walker reached to load the bases when no one covered first base on his sacrifice bunt to Pace. Charlie Bonee brought in the tying run by drawing a nine-pitch walk to set the stage for Boyer.

Over the last two seasons, the Aggies have posted an 18-2 mark and 4-0 record versus Sumrall in two championship series contests. set off a wild celebration.

Game 1

Kossuth had to play an 18-inning game en route to the 2014 title, the school’s first. Game 1 of this year’s championship series started on a similar path. The Aggies beat Sumrall 7-6 on Wednesday, May 11 in 11 innings of the opener of a Class 3A championship rematch with Sumrall. The winning run came as Kossuth senior Zack Walker scored from first base after an errant pickoff attempt in the top of the 11th inning. There were plenty of memorable moments, a pair of diving catches by Walker in left among them. There were plenty of errors, too. Sumrall (25-8) committed six of the game’s 10. Kossuth (22-11) had another hero, sophomore pitcher Elijah Potts, who came on in relief of Tyler Mercer to get the win, pitching 6.1 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and

struck out five and improved to 7-1. “That’s the most pitches he’s thrown all year,” said first-year Kossuth coach Trave Hopkins. “He’s usually our sixth, seventh inning guy. I never thought he’d be our sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th. But he’s had a lot of heart all year and he showed it tonight.” Sumrall pitcher Nick Clark didn’t allow a Kossuth hit until the fifth inning. The Aggies scored two in the inning to take a 3-2 lead on Mercer’s two-RBI single. The craziest sequence may have been in the seventh. Sumrall took a 4-3 lead on Clark’s single, a lead that chased started Mercer. Down 4-3 in the seventh with runners at second and third and the Sumrall infield in, Mercer’s grounder to third ricocheted off Brady Hick’s glove. Reed Mitchell scored from third as Jacob Wilcher alertly took third as the ball rolled toward second base.

Mercer bolted to second and with the attention on him, Wilcher headed home and scored the go-ahead run for a 5-4 lead off new pitcher Drake Pace. Mitchell had walked. After Wilcher doubled, Sumrall went to the pen, replacing Clark. Alex Knight (8-4) took the loss. “It will drain you,” Sumrall coach Larry Knight said. “Either team who lost that one, it was going to be tough.” With a runner on, Sumrall blew a chance in the bottom of the ninth. Matt Jones singled to right. Nikolas Wilcher’s throw to third bounced past Garison Lathrop and Jared Shuck headed home. Lathrop’s throw to catcher Hunter Swindle was on target to tag Shuck to end the inning. Kossuth took the lead in the top of the 10th when Charlie Bonee singled and Potts reached on Sumrall’s fourth error for a 6-5 lead. Sumrall tied it in the bottom of the 10th when Trace Jordan’s RBI bloop landed just fair with two outs.

Corinth girls win 7th, first in 4A BY STEVE BEAVERS CLINTON — One was enough for the Corinth Lady Warriors. CHS broke the three-year run of rival Pontotoc to win its first Class 4A Cross Country State Championship on Saturday, November 8. The Lady Warriors defeated runner-up Vancleave by a single point while Pontotoc finished third. “Five months of hard work unfolded perfectly on Saturday,” said CHS Head Coach Rob Philip. “We had a strategy going in and everyone played their role beautifully … it was a complete team effort.” The title was the first in 4A for the Lady Warriors. Corinth won six straight 3A championships from 2003-2008. Since their last crown in ‘08, CHS has

Lady Lions lone team to win division title BY H. LEE SMITH II The Biggersville Lady Lions were the lone local club to bring home a championship on Saturday, February 21. They were also the only ones on the positive side of a rally. Biggersville outscored Wheeler 35-24 in the fourth quarter to claim the Division 1-1A Tournament with a 69-65 win at Booneville High School. The Lady Lions entered the quarter with 34 points. The Lady Lions led 15-11 after one and 31-24 at the break before the wheels came off in the third quarter. Biggersville managed just three points in the third -- all coming off the bench from Alexis Shumpert -- while Wheeler posted 17 to take a 41-34 advantage into the final period. The Lady Lions got a combined 47

points from Savannah Davis (21), Jada Tubbs (13) and Elly Nash (13) on the night. The trio also came up big in the fourth-quarter rally, netting all but six of the Lady Lions’ 35 points. Biggersville also stepped up its game at the charity stripe in earning the championship trophy. After missing 14 of their 20 attempts through three quarters, BHS connected on 19-of-22 over the final eight minutes. Davis was 6-of-7 in the fourth and also connected on her third 3-pointer of the night. Nash and Tubbs each tallied 10 apiece in the frame, with Nash making all four charity tosses. Alexis Shumpert also tallied in double figures with 11, including all three of Biggersville’s points in the third. • At the 1-3A Tournament at Northeast

Mississippi Community College, Kossuth dropped a 67-65 decision to Mooreville in its bid to claim its first league title since 2000. Kossuth led by double digits in the third, before Mooreville clawed back to within 51-50 after three complete. Payton McCord scored the Troopers’ last five points, including a 3-of-4 showing from the stripe as the No. 3 seed edged out the No. 4 seed. McCord scored 12 of his 20 points in the fourth, and missed just once over his last six attempts from the line. Rick Hodum paced Kossuth with 23 points, including half of Kossuth’s 10 three-point buckets. Hodum had 18 of Kossuth’s 35 points in the odd quarters.

Warriors fall to eventual champions BY H. LEE SMITH II JACKSON — You have to knock down shots and protect the ball when facing the defending champions. Corinth did neither, especially after opening up a nine-point lead late in the opening quarter. McComb outscored Corinth 15-5 in the second quarter, scoring 19 of 21 points over a nine-minute span overall, ending the Warriors’ 17th state tournament appearance one game shy of their ’12 berth in the championship game with a 59-49 decision in the Class 4A boys’ semifinal on Thursday, March 13. McComb would go onto defeat Quitman 52-40 in the title game and end the season at 31-1 with consecutive state championships. Corinth (25-8) jumped out to a 5-0 advantage, and trailed for just 35 seconds in the opening period. Seven points by Antares Gwyn and a

pair of 3-pointers by Kendall Stafford pushed Corinth out to a 17-12 lead after one quarter. The Warriors were 7-of-14 from the field in the first eight minutes, leading by nine at the 1:06 mark. That would be the best the Warriors would have it in trying to advance to their 12th championship game in 17 state tournament appearances. A 15-5 advantage in the second quarter, coupled with a 4-0 spurt the final 35 seconds of the first frame, turned the game by 14 points. McComb knotted the game at 19-19 with its third 3-ball of the afternoon and took the lead for good on its fourth with 3:25 left in the half. Corinth was 1-of-7 from the floor with seven turnovers in the second quarter before Javen Morrison knocked down a 3-pointer right at the buzzer. Gwyn, who recorded a double-double

that included a game-high 20 points, and Morrison provided the lone CHS buckets in the second -- 6:10 apart. McComb led 27-22 at the break. Stafford, who added 14 in his final prep game, pulled Corinth to within two twice in the third quarter on 3-pointers. McComb outscored Corinth 12-3 the final 3:41 of the third and led by 11 -42-31 heading to the final quarter. After managing just 14 points in the middle quarters, Corinth responded with 18 in the final session. Corinth trailed by 16 with 4:17 left. Gwyn, who had 10 in the fourth, scored eight straight for CHS and Tada Stricklen’s 3-pointer in the final seconds set the margin at an even 10 points.

Lady Warriors fall in Class I semis BY H. LEE SMITH II The third time was a charm for the Lady Warriors. Problem was, it was the blue ones from Tate County. Corinth extended two sets with Senatobia, but ended up with nothing to show for it as the Region 2 champions downed the Region 1 champions in straight sets Tuesday, October 28 in the North Half championship of the Class I Volleyball Playoffs. The visiting Lady Warriors had taken 2-0 and 3-1 wins over Corinth earlier this season. It was their 20th straight-set win out of 32 victories and 11th in a best-of-five format. Senatobia sandwiched 26-24 wins around a 25-15 decision. The Tate County club would finish at 32-5 after falling to three-time defending champion Our Lady Academy in the title round. SHS entered the finale having lost just 25 sets -- 11 coming in their four losses -- in 36 contests. Corinth’s worst set was the middle one where errors played a huge roll in the 10-point deficit. CHS racked up 40 errors over four categories in the three sets -- 10 over their per-game and nearly four over their per-set averages entering the con-

A club that played just one senior on Tuesday, was balanced across five categories with six different leaders. Aundrea Adams and Paige Bradley tied for the team lead in kills with four. Madeline Shirley had 15 digs and Caroline Sleeper handed out seven assists to pace the Red ’n Black. Sloan Weeden led the way in blocks with four, while Madison Mayhall had two of the club’s three aces. Corinth ended its season at 22-10, reaching the state semifinal round for the second time in three years. The win total is second only to the 2312 mark in 2012, which was the other time the program had advanced this far. Warriors fall short in semifinal round BY H. LEE SMITH II Corinth wasn’t able to steal another one on the road. Host Kosciusko marked in the opening half, and rode the 1-0 advantage through stoppage time to claim the 4A North title in the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s Boys Soccer Playoffs on Tuesday, February 3. The Whippets beat two Division 1-4A members en route to the North title. Kossy won 2-1 at 1-4A champion New Albany in the opening round. Kosciusko would finish the season at 12-9-1 after falling to South champion St. Stanislaus in the championship contest. The match was the fourth time

CHS won in 2009-10 en route to their state championship win, and earned their second in 2011-12 before falling to Bay in the title match. Corinth lost the 2010-2011 North match, the middle of a three-year run that saw the Warriors reach the state semifinal round. The Warriors earned a berth in their fifth Final Four appearance with a

thrilling win over Caledonia.

Corinth worked overtime, and then some, to reach the Class 4A semifinals. The Saturday, January 31 quarterfinal contest on CHS’ artificial surface wasn’t decided until penalty kicks, with Corinth winning that battle 3-1.

The Kossuth Cheer Squad claimed the Class 3A state championship in tumbling.

‘I’ll Tumble For You’: Kossuth wins 4th title BY KIMBERLY SHELTON Proving hard work and diligence are the keys to success, the Kossuth High School Cheer Squad tumbled its way to victory during the 2014 Mississippi High School Activities Association Cheer and Dance Competition. Held in Jackson on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Mississippi Coliseum, the KHS Cheer Squad competed against seven other squads, achieving first place honors in the Class 3A Tumbling Division for Cheer. each cheer squad was judged on the following criteria: the cleanliness of its routine, difficulty and execution (stunts, dance, pyramid and tumbling) and how well and loud it performed its cheers. “We were also graded on how easy the cheers were to follow,” said Cheer Squad Coach and Sponsor Renee Turner. “The cheers were very important because they made up a third of the score.” Well represented by Choreographer Darren Kersting, Superintendent Gina Rogers Smith, and Aggie

Mascot Kristen Devers, the team of cheerleaders secured their fourth win at state competition. Past wins were in 2006, 2007 and 2008. “We are blessed to have a wonderful support system,” said Turner who has now sponsored the squad for three and a half consecutive years. ”The girls were awarded a first-place trophy, individual medals, a banner and patches for their jackets.” With 17 high school students and

Colorectal Cancer Screening Saves Lives

Colorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cancer killer in the U.S. But it can be prevented. Screening helps find precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening can also find colorectal cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

• When discovered in its early stages, colorectal cancer is up to 90% curable. • Men and women age 50 and older should be screened regularly. • Colonoscopy is the most effective screening procedure when performed by an experienced gastroenterologist specializing in endoscopy. -ĂŒiÂŤÂ…i˜ /° “>˜˜] ° ° œ…˜ ° Ă›iĂ€iĂŒĂŒi] ° °

2014 Baseball

Wilcher named area’s Player of the Year BY H. LEE SMITH II Kossuth’s Jacob Wilcher earned top billing in the annual 2014 Daily Journal All-Area Baseball Team, the first Aggie to earn that honor. The incoming junior was named Player of the Year on the 10-man squad that was published on June 22, 2014. Thrasher senior Josh Walden and Booneville senior Andrew Lambert were also named among the 10 best in the Tupelo newspaper’s circulation area. Wilcher, an Ole Miss commit, helped lead Kossuth to its second straight Class 3A title in May. The Aggies finished 2311, winning 10 of 11 in the postseason, after rallying just to get into the playoffs and have a chance to defend their title. He blasted five homers -all consecutive over a six atbat span -- in a first round sweep of O’Bannon. The third-year player hit a three-run blast, a solo shot and added a grand slam in a 19-0 road win that was called early due to lightning. In the return match the following day, he hit a pair of two-run bombs in a 10-0 series-clinching victory. Wilcher was 5-for-6 with five homers and 12 RBI in the sweep. He was hit by pitch in his first plate appearance in Game 2, before finally being retired in his sixth official at-bat of the series. www.mycrossroadsmagazine.com

The outfielder was also a member of the 2013 AllArea team after the thenfreshman helped the Aggies claim their first baseball title. Kossuth swept South champion and perennial state contender Sumrall in both championship series. Wilcher batted .473 with 12 doubles, eight homers and 32 RBI this past season. He also swiped 20 bases. The center fielder hit .443 with four roundtrippers and 25 RBI during his freshman campaign.

WARRIORS CONTINUED FROM 17

From winter storms to firestorms. As cold as the last two weeks have been with freezing rain, sleet and even snow, Kendall Stafford was as hot. The Corinth senior scored the Warriors’ first 13 points, made his first seven shots -- four from beyond the arc -- and finished with a game-high 22 points in just 23 minutes as Corinth thumped Newton County 78-32 in quarterfinal action at Jackson State University on Friday, March 6. “Kendall played at a high level and shot the ball well,” said Corinth Head Coach Keith Greene. “The old adage is if you’re hot, you keep shooting until you cool off or they find a way to counter you on defense.” Corinth scored the first five points -- all from Stafford -- and never trailed in the first state quarterfinal match since the mid 1970s. CHS led 11-3 at the 5:15-mark of the first, forcing Newton County (18-13) into its first of two timeouts in the first six-plus minutes. “We came out hot, got off to a great start and never looked back,” said Greene. Three other starters scored in the first quarter with Corinth taking a 22-9 lead at the first horn. Corinth scored the final eight point of the second, including transition buckets just 35 seconds apart to push the lead to 22 -37-15 -- at recess. Gwyn was 1-for-3 from the floor with no rebounds in the opening half.

A 20-9 advantage in the third, which included 11 straight -- five by Gwyn -extended the lead to 57-24 after three. Eleven of the 15 Warriors scored in the contest, including Will Gardner’s bucket ahead of the buzzer that matched Corinth’s biggest lead. Gwyn, Hack Smith and Tairek Johnson added 10 points each. one 8th-grade alternate in tow, Turner said she was impressed by the professionalism selfdiscipline displayed by the squad throughout the competition. “They worked hard and were very deserving,” she said. “We have a great group of girls on our squad and I am proud of each and every one.” Described by their coach as prayer warriors, the squad and many of their parents were overwhelmed to the point of tears after learning of their victory. “They truly believe in the power of prayer and were just so excited for the opportunity to compete,” said Turner. “They wanted to go out and hit a clean routine and that’s exactly what they did.”

iously to learn their score. “As soon as the announcer called out Alcorn Central for first place, the weight that had been sitting on all our shoulders was finally lifted and all the 3 to 9 p.m. practices were worth it,” said Co-Captain Katie Smith. “Being on this dance team has been a blessing for me. I’m so proud to say I danced with my friends and made memories I will never forget. I’m even more proud to say that I’m an Alcorn Central dancer.” Inspired by the team’s self-discipline and commitment to their afternoon practices, Whitaker said it was unbelievable to see the depth of dedication shown by each dancer at such a young age. “They are amazing and such good athletes who put 200 percent into each and every practice and performance. I feel honored, privileged and blessed to have the opportunity to be their coach,” she said. “I’m so excited to have been able to share the love and passion I have for dance with them and hope they learn something from each season.” An emotional experience, team Captain Lindsey Miller described the feelings she felt during the competition. “It was the happiest and saddest I’ve ever felt,” she said. “This team

ROUND has been such a big part of my life for the past four years, it breaks my heart to realize it’s all over.” Her Co-Captain, Alissa Ann Williams, echoed the sentiment. “All I could do was cry because I have never been more proud of myself or my teammates than in that moment,” said the ACHS senior. “Knowing this competition was my last, everything was intensified. All the nerves, the desire to win, and the will to give it everything I had and leave nothing behind were more present than ever before. I know without a doubt that this competition was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had.” Reflecting on a season full of triumphs and challenges, Coach Whitaker feels blessed and privileged to have been a part of all four wins and to have worked with the students she calls, her “baby girls”. “From all of the sweat, blood, tears, pulled muscles and bruises, to our motivational talks and team circles of held hands and prayers, we had one goal and it was to bring home what was ours -- he state title for best Hip-Hop dance team in Mississippi which previously belonged to our school for three years ... and that’s exactly what we did. We brought it back home and collected our fourth state title,” she said.

After Caledonia tied it at 1-1 with about 30 seconds to play on what assistant coach Cameron Glenn called an “unbelievable shot!” the teams played two 10-minute overtime periods with no winner. Two five-minute periods of “Golden Goal” time ensued, where the first goal would have won the second-round contest. The Warriors eventually put the game away in PK time, making three of four shots to the Confederates one. Preston Snyder went the route in goal to earn the victory. “Preston came up huge in goal all game, just like he has done all season,” said Glenn. “Big-time saves in regulation and in PKs.” Corinth took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on a Bennett Mills goal off a Carter Chandler assist. Both had been injured at the end of the regular season. “It was great having them back for the playoffs,” said Glenn. “Carter’s move to center mid has been a catalyst for our success.”

Opening Round

The Corinth Warriors earned a home game in the second round of the Class 4A Mississippi High School Activities Association’s Soccer Playoffs with a 1-0 win at Florence on Monday, January 26. Corinth, which finished as Division 1-3A runners-up to New Albany, knocked off Division 4-4A champion Florence on a firsthalf goal by Mark Larson. Carter Chandler provided the assist, while Preston Snyder earned the shutout with a clean sheet in goal.
