‘Find Your Park’ CORINTH 2015-2016 VISITORS GUIDE

National Park Services turns 100 years old

8

The Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center and Shiloh National Military Park are getting ready to celebrate. The park has big plans when the National Park Service turns 100 years old in 2016. The NPS will soon begin the public engagement campaign “Find Your Park” to reintroduce national parks to a new generation of Americans. “Most of the public knows we have national parks, but when when they start naming them they begin with Yellowstone and Yosemite,” said Shiloh National Military Park Superintendent Dale Wilkerson. “The NPS campaign ‘Find Your Park’ helps to show we have national parks in our own backyard.” Shiloh and Corinth have several things in the planing stage for 2016. “We have various events planned to help people reconnect with the park,” said Wilkerson. Shiloh Park got a jump start in its attempt to reconnect people with its Memorial Day

event on May 25, 2015. “In years past, the park always did something big for Memorial Day,” said the park superintendent. “This year we revamped it back up.” The traditional observance included the keynote address by three fourth grade students representing Alcorn, McNairy and Hardin counties. Selected fourth grade classes from each of the schools also assisted in the ceremony by singing the National Anthem, helped lead the Pledge of Allegiance and in laying a ceremonial wreath on the grave of the Unknown Soldier. “It was our kickoff event for ‘Find Your Park’ and a way to connect young people to the park,” said Wilkerson. Wilkerson said a large living history day – similar to the one done in 2012 – is also part of plans for April of 2016. The living history event will be held a weekend prior to the anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh. The park is also looking into bringing back Grand Illumination to go along with the anniversary of the Battle of Corinth. Wilkerson also mentioned starting a “Con-

cert in the Park” during the summer of 2016. The superintendent knows 2016 will be a busy year for the national park. “We are really excited about 2016 and getting the word out on all we have planned,” he said. “Find Your Park” is the combined effort of the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation. The two have combined to produce programs, events and activities which will drive broad awareness, deepen engagement and increase support for America’s national

parks, the work of the National Park Service, and its partners. In addition to making all 401 national parks go-to destinations, the campaign will highlight the historic preservation and outdoor recreation work the National Park Service does with communities across the country and the value it brings to Americans every day. “Our goal is to get people to come to parks, then figure out what they like,” said Wilkerson. “Once we connect with them, then we can get them to the next stage of support.”

CORINTH 2015-2016 VISITORS GUIDE 10

Photo by Mark Boehler The commemorative courtyard outside the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center shows a united country become divided, then united again in a pool of reflection.

A 15-hour van trip from Miami inspired Woody Harrell to think and draw. The long trek back home from Florida in 2001 is when the former Shiloh National Military Park Superintendent came up with an idea. His drawing produced the commemorative courtyard at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center. “I spent that entire trip huddled on the back seat with a large legal pad and a handful of #2 pencils,” said Harrell. “After several failed attempts, by the time I was dropped off, I had outlined a concept design to tell the story of the Civil War from its causes and coming in the 1770s, to its epic battles, through the nation’s difficult reuniting and the war’s lasting legacy.” The task of telling the war story through the “American Stream of History” wasn’t an easy one. “The design was one of the building’s most difficult planning issues,” said Harrell, who retired from the NPS in 2012 after four decades with 22 coming at Shiloh. “The courtyard’s central location made its success critically important.” Harrell recalls the first ideas as being “very pedestrian and mundane.” Then the trip back home from Miami after 9/11. “I had a 15-hour ride back to Shiloh with many detours and stops along the way,” said Harrell of the time he churned out the design. The pattern follows the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C.. The inspiration of the memorial with its large stones, and gushing fountains and waterfalls was put together on a smaller scale for Corinth. “Since opening in 2004, positive reaction has shown the courtyard’s distinctively minimal approach captures the essence of a difficult and often controversial historical period in a thought provoking manner,” said the retired superintendent. “If the Interpretive Center were a golf course, the commemorative courtyard would be the signature hole.” The water feature records the flow of events central to understanding the most important happening in American history. A large granite slab rises from a curved, elevated Liberty Pool as visitors enter the courtyard. “Inscribed on the granite are excerpts from two documents at the foundation of America’s

ideal of freedom – the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution,” said Harrell. Water from the pool empties through 13 scuppers – symbolizing the transition from colonies to states – to form a stream of American history. Small fountainheads mark the addition of new states in the ever-widening stream. Slave holding states appear on one edge of the stream, free states on the opposite. In an era of heightening sectionalism, lines of pink granite mark the crucial compromises of 1820 and 1850. “With the 1860 election of Abraham Lincoln, the scale of the water feature changes and the two streams of a now divided nation flow around 50 plus ‘battle blocks,’ representing important battles from among the Civil War’s 117 most prominent campaigns,” said Harrell. “The size of each block is proportional to the casualties sustained in that encounter.” Battles commonly known by different names in the north and south – as Shiloh/ Pittsburg Landing – have those names displayed on opposite sides. “Although displaying a randomness to reflect the confusion and jumble of war, the blocks are generally placed chronologically within the war’s eastern or western theaters,” added Harrell. At the Civil War’s end, the two steams join once again. The stream’s turbulence has not subsided before its end in 1870. “Three black horizontal stones are placed there and are inscribed with excerpts from the three constitutional amendments passed as a direct result of the conflict (the 13th, 14th and 15th) form a bridge of reunification,” Harrell said. Located near the feature’s lower end, a reflection pool is surrounded with bronze leaves from the state trees of the war’s participants – fallen leaves representing fallen sons. “Many visitors stop at the pool to contemplate the meaningof the Civil War and its continuing impact on American lives today,” said Harrell. “Their first impression is one of tranquility and beauty, but on closer inspection the water feature brings to mind the nation’s turbulent first hundred years, from the American Revolution to Reconstruction.” The Stream of American History can be viewed daily except during periods of extremely cold weather, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the exception of Christmas Day. There is no charge to visit the center.

Corinth National Cemetery 1551 Horton Street Hours: Daily, 8 a.m. to sunset The Corinth National Cemetery, located on Horton Street, was founded in 1866 and is the final resting place for 1,793 known and 3,895 unknown soldiers representing 273 regiments from 15 states. The process of consecrating remains was begun in September 1864. The remains were garthered from some fifteen or twenty battlefields or skirmish grounds from Corinth, Iuka, Holly Springs, Guntown and Farmington, Mississippi. By 1870, when the interment program was practically completed, Corinth was number sixteen in the order of National Cemeteries having 5,688 interments. Veterans of all wars are buried there, many with their wives. Corinth’s Civil War Earthworks (Battery F, Beauregard Line & Fort Battery Robinett) Davis Street, Hwy 2 The City of Corinth offers visitors a multitude of Civil War related sites but none as impressive as the extant earthworks, which have survived not only military engagements, but the battles of time and development as well. They once encircled the city, protecting the vital railroad junction from advancing armies. Today they can be found in neighborhoods and wooded lots, a tangible reminder of another time. All of the earthworks are well marked and have parking spaces or pull-offs and many offer racks for locking bicycles. A few of the sites are easily accessible though most require a walk of from several hundred yards up to a mile. Well-marked paths lead to the sites, and most have informative way side exhibits describing the individual earthworks.

Colonel William P. Rogers Statue 600 East Waldron Street Colonel Rogers, known as the hero of Battery Robinett, was mortally wounded in fighting on the second day of the Battle of Corinth, October 4, 1862. Federal General William Rosecrans ordered Colonel Rogers buried where he fell, an eternal reminder of Rogers’ ultimate sacrifice. In 1896, the Albert Sidney Johnston Camp #1164 of The United Confederate Veterans had the statue erected to honor their comrades and leader Colonel Rogers. The statue, which once stood in the intersection of Waldron and Frankin Streets, is now over 100 years old and stands on the corner of the Alcorn County Court Square. Historic Verandah Curlee House 705 Jackson Street Phone: (662) 287-8300 Originally built in 1857 for city of Corinth co-founder Hamilton Mask, the VerandahCurlee House served as headquarters for several generals during the Civil War. The National Historic Landmark home is currently finishing up a major renovation. The home will open soon for public tours. Shiloh National Military Park 1055 Pittsburg Landing Road, Shiloh, TN. 38376 Hours: Open Daily from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Closed Christmas Day) Admission: Free Phone: (731) 689-5696 Online: nps.gov/shil/ A short drive north from Corinth on 4,000 acres overlooking the Tennessee River, stands 151 monuments, 217 cannon and over 450 historic tablets marking America’s best preserved battlefield.
